Sabonis little help to Soviets as Yugoslavs win easily

In moments of frustration, Soviet basketball star Arvidas Sabonis stared at his sneakers, shaking his head, bouncing the ball as if he wanted to punish it for his plight. The Soviet Union played its first game of the 1988 Olympics – Sabonis his first of the year – and was embarrassed by Yugoslavia 92-79. The 7-foot-2 Sabonis has been recovering from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon and underwent rehabilitation in Portland, Ore., under the care of the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers’ team physician. The Trailblazers want the Soviet Union to allow Sabonis to play for them. The physician in Portland advised against Sabonis competing in the Olympics. If he were to injure his Achilles’ tendon a third time, his career probably would be over.

    YUGOSLAVIANS SLAM-DUNK SOVIET MEN

Midway through the first half, they began chanting, “Yugo-Yugo- Yugo,” and didn’t let up until the Yugoslavs prevailed 92-79 over the Soviet Union in a grudge match between the two socialist countries yesterday. The U.S. players who were watching must have left with their heads swimming with images of Yugo middle men Zarko Paspalj (20 points, 11 rebounds), Vlade Divac (7 points and a block down the stretch) and Dino Radja (6 points) easily outmaneuvering Soviet center Arvidas Sabonis, who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. That may be because Draven Petrovic’s shooting demonstration was enough to stifle any form of Glasnost. It turns out that he, not Sabonis, may pose the biggest obstacle to a repeat gold for the Americans. The 6-foot-6 guard is an imperturbable shooter who capitalizes on the smallest openings to launch his rainbow jumpers. Petrovic also is a master at drawing contact, as evidenced by a 10-for-11 performance at the foul line during his 25-point performance.

Sabonis is No Factor / Yugoslavia Stuns Soviets / BASKETBALL

The loss is not devastating for the Soviets, because four of the six teams in each bracket advance, but it probably means, as Yugoslav guard Drazen (Pistol Pete) Petrovic said, “Maybe in the semifinal game we will see U.S. and Russia.” The Soviets, who refused to come to the interview room after the defeat, can’t be happy about their chances. The biggest disappointment was 7-3 center Arvidas Sabonis, a No. 1 draft choice of the NBA Portland Trail Blazers in 1986. Sabonis tore his Achilles’ tendon about a year ago and has been undergoing treatment from Trail Blazer doctors. The win was sweet revenge for the Yugoslavs, who were leading the Russians by nine points with 43 seconds left in the World championships in Spain this year, only to lose. They also did the same thing in the Olympic qualifying tournament at Rotterdam, letting a 15-point lead slip away.

THE SEOUL OLYMPICS; Men’s Basketball; Sabonis Ineffective As Russians Fall

”The difference between now and July is that we are three months older,” said Dusan Ivkovic, the Yugoslav coach. ”We have had 15 games and many practices since then. We are a young team like the United States. We have only one player who was on the team in Los Angeles in 1984.” [Arvidas Sabonis] did not play when the Soviet Union beat Yugoslavia the last time. The 7-foot-2-inch center has been recovering from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon, the second time he has suffered that injury, and he underwent rehabilitation in Portland, Ore., under the care of the team physician of the Portland Trailblazers of the National Basketball Association. The team is hoping that the Soviet Union will allow Sabonis to play for them sometime this season. Advised Against Playing Tonight, however, the mood was glum as the team trudged out of the Chamshil gymnasium. ”It was my first game, I feel good,” was all that a poker-faced Sabonis would say.

Men’s Basketball Soviets, Sabonis Fall to Yugoslavs

Unfortunately, if [Arvydas Sabonis] inspired anyone, it was the Yugoslavs. The Soviets led, 15-5, midway through the first half when Sabonis went in, but Yugoslav guards Drazen Petrovic and Zelimir Obradovic rained three-point goals on them and the Yugoslavs scored a 92-79 victory, celebrating as they went. As important as the game was, Sabonis’ presence overshadowed it. He had a painful two-year rehabilitation from his ruptured Achilles’ tendon, topped off with a winter in Oregon, where he is a first-round draft pick by the National Basketball Assn.’s Portland Trail Blazers. The Trail Blazer doctor, Robert Cook, had warned Sabonis that he was jeopardizing his recovery by playing so soon.

NEW YORK (AP) – New York Mets lefthander Bob Ojeda underwent successful surgery yesterday after he nearly severed the upper one- third portion of the middle finger on his left hand with an electric hedge clipper in a gardening accident at his Long Island home. The Mets said Ojeda underwent five hours of microsurgery at Roosevelt Hospital by Dr. James Parkes and Dr. Richard Eaton. Eaton said the tip of the finger was reattached including damaged arteries, tendons and nerves.

    Mets rocked by Ojeda injury

In a freak accident at his Long Island home, left-handed pitcher Bob Ojeda nearly severed the upper third of his left middle finger at the joint with an electric hedge clipper late Wednesday morning. Ojeda was scheduled to start game four of the National League Championship Series for the Mets, who clinched a tie for the East title with Wednesday night’s 4-3 victory over Philadelphia but were unable to clinch the title outright when Pittsburgh beat St. Louis, 5-0. The accident severed the bottom and top arteries, nerves and tendons, Dr. James Parkes said, but the nearly severed tip remained attached to the rest of the finger by a flap of skin. That facilitated a four-hour microsurgical process in which the joint was fused, the nerves and blood vessels re-attached and the finger stabilized.

Mets clinch tie after learning Ojeda’s season is over

The Mets said [Bob Ojeda] underwent five hours of microsurgery at Roosevelt Hospital. Drs. James Parkes and Richard Eaton, who performed the surgery, said the tip of the finger was reattached, including damaged arteries, tendons and nerves. Parkes said the accident, which occurred at 11:15 a.m. EDT, nearly severed the finger at the joint, cutting through both the bottom and top arteries and bottom and top tendons of the finger and shattering the joint. Eaton took out the damaged parts of the joint, then fused the remaining portion, connected the remaining blood vessels and nerves and stabilized the finger.

Banks won’t let pain interfere with visions of gold in triple jump

For Willie Banks, the world record holder in the triple jump, the 24th Olympic Games are the last chance for an elusive gold medal. He is going for it this week, despite painful Achilles tendons in both legs. Then, after a vacation in the Caribbean, he will go home to Oceanside and look for a house and a new career, possibly in politics. Banks usually derives energy from the crowd, orchestrating the fans with flamboyant gestures and soliloquies that have become a trademark. But he knows it is difficult to achieve the rapport with Asian audiences that he does with European and American spectators. “They are quiet people. It’s going to be difficult to lift them,” said Banks, who competed in the Olympic Stadium here four years ago. “It keeps me on edge. I can’t be too cocky,” he said. “No one does things the way I do. At the Trials, I was saying, `This is the end of my life. That’s it. There’s nothing beyond the Olympic Trials.’ That motivates me. These sports psychologists go, `Oh, don’t say those negative thoughts.’ I said, `Come on, let Willie Banks motivate Willie Banks. Go motivate somebody that doesn’t have their act together.’ I’m 32 years old, I’ve been competing for 15 years at a world-class level, I should know myself by now.”

    BRIEFING

The Mets said [Bob Ojeda] underwent five hours of microsurgery at Roosevelt Hospital. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Parkes and Dr. Richard Eaton. Eaton said the tip of the finger was reattached including damaged arteries, tendons and nerves. Tailback Vince Workman, Ohio State’s leading rusher the last two seasons, was declared ineligible for the rest of his senior season because he signed with an agent. Athletic director Jim Jones said Workman’s action was a clear violation of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules. Workman, a senior co-captain, said he accepted $1,000 from San Francisco-based agent Dave Lueddekke at a meeting in Columbus, Ohio, in February, 1987. Coach Mike Shanahan of the Los Angeles Raiders said Jay Schroeder will be the starting quarterback against Denver Monday night. Schroeder will replace former Notre Dame QB Steve Beuerlein, who went all the way in the Raiders’ first three games, completing 42-of-91 passes for 675 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions and 14 sacks. The Raiders obtained Schroeder from the Washington Redskins Sept. 5. Surgery for Redskins’ Williams

Leto routs Largo in cross-country Series: High Schools

With second-place finisher Tom Castelli leading the way, the No. 1-ranked Falcons put four runners in the top eight Thursday to outclass 33 other teams – including defending 4A state champion Largo – in the ninth annual Countryside Rotary Cougar Invitational cross-country meet at John Chesnut Park. Leto scored 33 points and beat second-place Largo by 92 points – a marked improvement over last week’s 13-point victory over Largo in the Leto Invitational. On Thursday, however, Largo was without injured No. 2 runner Liam Quinn (strained Achilles’ tendon).

THE SEOUL GAMES / DAY 7 Track Roundup Joyner-Kersee Leads, but Is Off Record Pace

After injuring her left knee Friday, Jackie Joyner-Kersee had unexpected difficulty through the first four events of the heptathlon at the Olympic Stadium. Such is Joyner-Kersee’s edge over the rest of the world in the heptathlon that she virtually competes against her own standards. Still the only woman to score more than 7,000 points, she scored 7,215 points at the U.S. trials in July for her third world record since 1986. “The knee gave me some problems and stiffened up a little bit,” Joyner-Kersee said. “But through the shotput competition, I could tell the tendon was going to loosen up and be OK.”

Joyner-Kersee on track for gold U.S. heptathlete sails to long jump record in seven-event ordeal

SEOUL (AP-Knight Ridder) – Jackie Joyner-Kersee set a world best for the heptathlon long jump yesterday at the Summer Games. Joyner-Kersee, the world’s nonpareil heptathlete, soared 7.27 metres (23 feet, 10 1/4 inches), breaking the 7.25-metre mark she set at the 1987 U.S. Track and Field Championships. And it put her on a pace to set yet another record in an event she dominates. On Day 1, despite a tender tendon in her left knee, Joyner- Kersee scored 4,264 points, winning or tying for first in the 200, the 100 hurdles and the high jump. She was second in the shot.

    Soviet cagers shun Sabonis

Arvidas Sabonis, who recently underwent treatment for an injured Achilles tendon in Portland, Ore., has been told by the Soviets that either he plays for his national team in Seoul or he won’t be allowed to play in the NBA this season. “From the distant past, sages and scholars of the orient have enjoyed collecting beautiful natural rocks,” said Tun Sung-lee, who is co-ordinating the project in the athletes’ village. “They are cherished as objects enriching mental and spiritual life.” “I took my kids to a Vancouver beach and told them to look for the prettiest rocks,” [Fred Loek] said. “I chose the shore because I wanted rocks that really typified my homeland.”

Tendon pull fails to slow Jackie

SEOUL, South Korea The only thing that could have separated Jackie Joyner-Kersee Saturday from the Olympic heptathlon gold medal she coveted was her own nagging left tendon. The tendon pull didn’t seem a factor in her first of three final events, the long jump, as Joyner-Kersee leaped to a heptathlon world record distance of 23 feet 10 1/4 inches. That bettered her mark of 23-9 1/2 set in 1987. Joyner-Kersee passed on her next two jump attempts to save herself for the final two events, the javelin and 800 meter run, but she showed no ill effects from the tendon problem . She wore no wraps on it or her left knee which also had caused her some discomfort earlier.
