Jack Clark Will Miss 3 Weeks - Torn Tendon / BASEBALL

Jack Clark Will Miss 3 Weeks – Torn Tendon / BASEBALL

[Jack Clark] hit his first home run of the spring yesterday, but he tore a tendon in his left leg while running it out and will be lost to the Yankees for three weeks. The injury occurred when Clark led off the second inning against the Orioles with a line drive that stayed just inside the left-field foul pole for a home run. Clark ran hard toward first base and appeared to slow up as he neared the bag. Clark, who signed a two-year, $3 million contract with the Yankees on January 6 after playing out his option with St. Louis, is recovering from a torn ligament in his right ankle suffered last September. An assortment of injuries sidelined him at various times with the Giants and the Cardinals. The Yankees said the calf injury was unrelated to his previous problems.
sore wrist

Human diseases mirrored in mice with new gene technique

Human diseases mirrored in mice with new gene technique

In a report published in the March 10 issue of the British journal Nature, [Rudolf Jaenisch] and colleagues wrote: “This study constitutes the first example of the generation of an animal model of a human genetic disease by introducing precisely defined alterations into the normal gene and then transferring the mutant gene into transgenic mice.” The research was conducted on the gene that produces Type 1 collagen, a structural material essential for healthy bones and and tendons. The human collagen molecule is a chain of 1,000 amino acids. Of these, 333 are the amino acid glycine. If just one glycine in this chain is replaced by another amino acid, the collagen is defective, and the disease osteogenesis imperfecta results. The researchers made this kind of mutation in the gene that produces Type 1 collagen in mice. They transferred the genes into single-cell mouse embryos. The genes produced defective collagen. When the mice were born, they had the same defects as babies with osteogenesis imperfecta.
wrist sore

Yankees’ Clark doesn’t expect he can play by Opening Day

New York Yankees designated hitter Jack Clark conceded Friday that he probably won’t be ready for Opening Day after tearing a tendon in his left calf Thursday. But that was all he was conceding. The Yankees estimate that the injury-prone Clark will be out for three weeks, which would mean he should be available for the second series of the season, beginning April 8 at home against Milwaukee. “I’ve never played in Yankee Stadium or seen it,” said Clark, who left St. Louis to sign a two-year, $3-million contract with the Yankees as a free agent. “Yankee Stadium might have to wait a little.”
pain on wrist

PROJECTION GRIM FOR 1990 OWNERS AVOIDING CONTRACT OBLIGATIONS FOR WHAT MAY BE A STRIKE YEAR

Wonder if any MVP voters would like their ballots back now that George Bell has shown what a selfish bore he is. Bell, who took a hike Thursday when asked to DH, has put manager Jimy Williams in a corner. They’re not sure kids Rob Ducey or Sil Campusano are going to hit, but they’ve got to try them in center field now. If the Jays go with Lloyd Moseby in center and put Bell back in left, it’ll look like Bell is running the team. Bell puts MVP numbers on the board, but he’s hurting the cause with stupid stunts like Thursday’s . . . The Indians may offer catcher Todd Pratt back to the Red Sox. Pratt, Boston’s catcher at Winter Haven last summer, was rated a good prospect by most scouts. The Sox left him unprotected and Cleveland snapped him up with the first pick of the December draft. Chris Bando and Andy Allanson are Cleveland’s catchers, and keeping Pratt means Cleveland can carry only four outfielders. Ron Kittle, John Moses and Carmen Castillo are battling for the No. 4 job, and the Tribe would like to keep two of the three. The Sox can reclaim Pratt for $25,000 if Cleveland doesn’t put him on the Opening Day roster . . . Tigers manager Sparky Anderson wants to try outfielder Billy Bean at first base and move Darrell Evans to DH . . . Despite Jack Clark’s injury (torn tendon, left leg, out three weeks) Billy Martin is still optimistic. Billy plans to have the Yankee pitchers take batting practice all year to prepare for the World Series . . . Toronto manager Williams has tried Cecil Fielder at third this spring . . . There’s a greyhound named Stieb running at a track in St. Petersburg, not far from the Jays’ camp in Dunedin. In 1979, a 15-year-old baseball star for the Cincinnati Midland Cardinals bumped into Reds manager [John McNamara] at the neighborhood 7-Eleven store. The kids lived a mile and a half from McNamara, and their homes were separated only by the Royal Oaks Country Club. The kid asked McNamara how he thought the Reds would do. McNamara gave a courteous answer. And that is how Todd Benzinger first met John McNamara . . . Jose Santiago, Boston’s Game 1 starter in the 1967 World Series, is the new manager of the Single-A Miami Marlins . . . The folks at Rolaids announced that they’ll penalize relievers by deducting points for blown saves when calculating numbers for the relief awards in 1988 . . . [Wade Boggs]‘ “Cheers” walk-on will air March 31 . . . Did you know that the Red Sox signed free agent catcher Paul Gedman (brother of you-know-who) to a minor league contract? Young Geddy caught at Framingham State last year . . . The Sox will play their Pawtucket farm team at McCoy Stadium May 12 at 6 p.m. . . . Tonight from 10 to midnight on WEEI you can hear Sox general manager Lou Gorman along with Minnesota GM Andy MacPhail and Kansas City GM John Schuerholz discussing the ins and outs of baseball . . . Those who read “Shoeless Joe and the Iowa Baseball Confederacy” will be happy to know that W.P. Kinsella is coming out with a collection of baseball short stories — “The Further Adventures of Slugger McBatt.” . . . Quiz answers: (1) Lou Boudreau, Joe McCarthy and Frank Chance; (2) [Al Rosen], Jackie Jensen and Roger Maris . . . Happy 47th birthday, Pat Corrales.
wrist thumb pain

AL NOTES

RHP Bill Wegman gave up one run in six innings and LHP Juan Nieves pitched six scoreless innings and allowed two hits in two games against California. … RH Tim Watkins, who pitched at Class A Stockton (Calif.) and Beloit (Wis.) last year has a 1.42 ERA in five appearances. “At the beginning of camp he was a long shot, but his shot it getting shorter now,” said BREWERS manager Tom Trebelhorn. Boston DH Sam Horn’s claim to the longest HR hit at Orlando’s Tinker Field didn’t last long. 1B Kent Hrbek of the TWINS hit a HR that almost cleared the press box on top of the adjacent Citrus Bowl in RF. “That was a legitimate 500-foot HR,” said Boston RHP Ed Lynch, the victim of Hrbek’s first preseason homer. … RHP Charlie Lea will be the fourth starter. He has a 0.56 ERA in 16 innings. CF Oddibe McDowell was scratched from the RANGERS’ lineup Sunday because of a sprained left ankle. McDowell sprained it in batting practice Saturday and aggravated it in batting practice Sunday. … RHP Brad Arnsberg was examined by Dr. William Andrews and was diagnosed as having an inflammation of the flexor tendon in his right elbow. Arnsberg will seek several other opinions. … RP Dale Mohorcic will have surgery today to remove a floating bone chip from his right elbow.
pain in thumb and wrist

AL NOTES

AL NOTES

The MARINERS may open with nine pitchers. “We don’t need our fifth starter until April 18,” said manager Dick Williams. RHP Ken Dixon, acquired from Baltimore, is not throwing with as much velocity as scouting reports indicated, said a concerned GM Dick Balderson. “I’m not as strong as I should be,” said Dixon, “and I don’t want to push it.” … New LF Mickey Brantley finds the position a major adjustment after playing CF and RF most of his career. “LF is definitely the toughest position to play in the outfield,” he said. … RHP Bill Swift’s spring performance could earn him a roster spot. “He’s sound,” said Williams. “He threw himself back in the picture.” RANGERS manager Bobby Valentine inserted RHP Jose Cecena Monday in the ninth inning with two outs and a man on. Cecena struck out Pittsburgh 3B Bobby Bonilla on three pitches. Valentine has been waiting to see Cecena in such a situation, and he liked the way the 24-year-old responded. “It was set up perfectly,” Valentine said. “He sat around all day. He sat around during the B game and he sat around during this game. Then we got him up in time, he had a home-run hitter up and he threw three quality pitches.” … Thus far in the spring, LHP Mitch Williams has admitted to a motivation problem. On Sunday, he said he felt much better. In his own words, he finally felt the adrenaline pumping.“Yeah,” Williams said, “I’m starting to feel it a little bit. My mechanics were good and it felt more like a game.” … RHP Brad Arnsberg was examined by Dr. Frank Jobe Monday in Vero Beach, Fla. Arnsberg, sidelined since August, is suffering from inflammation of the flexor tendon in his right elbow. IF-OF Steve Lyons wanted to be in the lineup so badly Monday that he placed a wager with WHITE SOX manager Jim Fregosi. If Lyons got a haircut, he could start. And at 12:30 p.m. EST, one hour before the game against Toronto was to begin, Lyons’ curly locks were shorn. “I told him I’d do anything to get in – and this is one of them,” said Lyons, who bumped C Ron Karkovice from the starting lineup. If Lyons were to catch one inning in the majors this season, he will have played every position except pitch. “They (pitchers) haven’t said `you don’t know what you’re doing back there,’ yet,” Lyons said. … Fregosi threw batting practice for the first time Monday and fooled a few hitters with his changeup. “My control was good – I’ve been working on that all spring,” Fregosi said. … DH-OF Harold Baines, limited to DH duties last season because of a knee injury, understands Toronto’s sullen George Bell, who has made it clear he wants to play OF, not just DH. “He’s not hurt. He’s got a gripe,” Baines said. … Neither RHs Bobby Thigpen and John Davis nor LH Ray Searage, who will be the relief corps, have pitched a full season in the majors.
fractured wrist symptoms

SPORTS DOCTOR The elbow: Bad match with tennis

SPORTS DOCTOR The elbow: Bad match with tennis

The elbow was not designed for the tennis player. When a person plays tennis, a fairly large muscle in the forearm pulls on a small attachment on the elbow, resulting in injury either from one big strain or numerous small strains. The usual injury is to the outer part of the elbow, which provides the thrust for the backhand stroke. The first, unfortunately, is age, as muscles and tendons become less flexible. The second is the quality of your stroke. “Leading with the elbow” on the backhand – hitting the ball with the elbow in front – is extremely stressful. (I am sure no one will admit to tennis elbow now that I’ve called its victims “old with a lousy backhand.”)
pain in wrist and hand

AL NOTES

3B Rene Gonzales is hitting .348, second on the ORIOLES to SS Cal Ripken. But Baltimore traded for 3B Rick Schu this week, creating a three-way battle for the starting job with rookie Craig Worthington (.222). Gonzales believes he should be considered the favorite to start. “I hate to look at it any other way. I’ve done everything asked of me,” Gonzales said. … OF Jeff Stone, in his first day as an Oriole, wore No. 35, but hopes for a lower number. “Thirty-five feels big,” Stone said. “I want a number from 20 on down. Thirty-five’s too big. It’s holding me back.” Stone isn’t sure what number he wants. “Got to see what’s available.”…… RANGERS …RHP Brad Arnsberg will undergo exploratory surgery on his sore right elbow in April. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Frank Jobe in Los Angeles. Jobe believes Arnsberg may have a tear in his medial collateral ligament. If that is the case, Jobe will do a ligament reconstruction, transferring a tendon from Arnsberg’s left wrist to the elbow. … RHP Dale Mohorcic had four bone chips removed from his right elbow in surgery Monday in Birmingham, Ala. Mohorcic is expected to be sidelined for at least a month. Manager Doc Edwards may have found his opening-day lineup. The new faces from last year are 1B Terry Francona, who signed with the INDIANS just before camp, and SS Jay Bell. The major change will have last year’s SS Julio Franco at 2B. In Franco’s first start at 2B Tuesday, he singled and had a two-run double against Milwaukee.
