Orned (Chicken) Gabriel filed a claim Friday against San Diego County, alleging that he was the victim of an “unlawful, unprovoked and vicious attack” by jail deputies in El Cajon that has left him with permanent spinal injuries. [Rodney G. Hood] first examined Gabriel shortly after the alleged assault on March 29. At that time, he found Gabriel’s injuries to be “consistent with” a beating, and he recommended that Gabriel be given physical therapy and medication in jail. But Hood said he did not know whether any of the medical care was provided. According to the claim, Gabriel suffers “permanent injuries to his spine, permanent injuries to his left leg and back, headaches, dizziness, extreme pain involving the muscles and tendons of both shoulders and his back, a permanent decreased range of motion to his right arm, and extreme and constant pain and suffering.”

Work up a sweat before going through a good stretching routine, Kramer advises aging athletes. Kramer, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, said that cold muscles, tendons and ligaments can be damaged by the very stretching that is supposed to prevent injuries.

Her big battle should come in the 200 meters, and her major opponent should be the same [Heike Drechsler], who shares the world record of 21.71 seconds. In the Olympic trails, [Florence Griffith Joyner] ran her four races fastern than 22 seconds and lowered the American record to 21.77. Drechsler’s fastest this year is 21.84. However, Griffith Joyner did not finish any of her 200′s with the zip she showed in the 100, and she is no better than a co-favorite with Drechsler. One attraction in the men’s races will be the attempt by Said Aouita of Morocco, the 1984 champion at 5,000 meters, to win the men’s 800 and 1,500 meters. Johnny Gray, a sometimes-inconsistent Californian, has run faster 800′s this year and is be a gold-medal threat. Steve Cram of Britain, the world record-holder in the mile, will run both the 800 and 1,500 if his injured right Achilles’ tendon allows him. SWIMMING – Tamas Daryni of Hungary holds the world records in the men’s 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley. David Wharton of Warminster, Pa., holds both American records. Wharton’s 400-meter time last year was the world record until it was broken five days later by the man Wharton refers to only as ”my Hungarian competitor.” Their races in Seoul will consist of equal portions of, in order, butterfly, backstroke, breast-stroke and freestyle. Different swimmers excel in different strokes, so positions change frequently in individual medleys. Midway through the finals, Wharton may trail Darnyi, Rob Woodhouse of Australia and Jens-Peter Berndt of West Germany. Look for Wharton to catch up on the breat-stroke leg, and watch his strong finish in the last 10 meters of the races.

“Smile, [Wayne Gretzky]-we love you,” a fan old enough to be Gretzky’s father insistently bellowed during the three hours Gretzky was on the ice, time that mostly was spent in skating drills and scrimmaging. Gretzky, trying to blend in with new teammates after 10 seasons as an Oiler, acknowledged that the fanfare-which built dramatically with his marriage in July to actress Janet Jones and crested with his August trade to the Kings-has been somewhat of a distraction. He said he hoped that in time, other players would get their deserved recognition. Left wing Bob Bourne, who had signed a one-year termination contract in June, decided not to report to camp and has retired, despite the entreaties of John Tonelli, who played with Bourne on the New York Islanders. Tonelli has signed with the Kings as a free agent after playing with Calgary….Center Dan Gratton put his right arm through a glass window and severed tendons in an accident at home and will be lost at least 8 weeks. Gratton lost his balance on a ladder. . . . [Mike Krushelnyski] signed a four-year contract with the Kings-three years and an option, according to his agent, Bob Beale. Krushelnyski was technically a free agent and was being pursued by Hartford, according to Beale, before coming to terms with the Kings.

As usual, Marvell Wynne was a marvel as a fill-in when the injured [Tony Gwynn] sat out the series finale against the Atlanta Braves Sunday at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Wynne’s first major league grand slam was the crowning blow of a seven-run second-inning outburst that gave the Padres an 8-2 victory and moved them into fourth place in the National League West. Gwynn had tendon surgery on the finger last winter, and it has been hurting since the All-Star break. He finally reached the point where he couldn’t grip a bat properly, so Wynne took his place in center field Sunday. Wynne’s 11 home runs give him second place on the team behind Carmelo Martinez’s 13. Interestingly, each of them has played only slightly more than half the time. Wynne has 275 at-bats, Martinez 285, and Gwynn leads the club with 467.

He becomes doubly valuable now because Barry Wilburn’s sprained right knee leaves the Redskins with just three cornerbacks, one of whom is Darrell Green. Although Coach Joe Gibbs wants the darting Green to return more punts this year, it may be too much of an injury risk now that the cornerback position is pencil-thin. [Billy Johnson] will be counted on instead, although he has a daughter who’s a junior in high school, has had three knee operations, plus tendon damage to his foot, and was waived this summer by the Indianapolis Colts. In another roster move, the team signed former Atlanta Falcons tight end Ron Middleton, a 6-foot-2, 252-pounder who blocks better than he does anything else. He can play special teams, fill in on the Redskins’ goal-line and short-yardage offense and, in essence, do what injured running back Reggie Branch did. Branch and Wilburn officially were placed on injured reserve yesterday, meaning they must sit out a minimum of four weeks, and it’s possible Wilburn could be out as many as six, Branch as many as eight. Johnson arrived yesterday with myriad suitcases, apparently planning to stay a while. Over the course of 13 NFL seasons with Houston and Atlanta (he also spent a year in Canada with Montreal), he has 3,291 career punt return yards (seven touchdowns) and 2,941 career kickoff return yards (two touchdowns), more than three miles in total. Also a wide receiver, he is comfortable in the Redskins’ offense, having played for former Falcons head coach and current Redskins assistant Dan Henning, who employed Coach Joe Gibbs’ system in Atlanta. Middleton, too, should fit in because of this.

Torrey Pines’ John Lynch and Clairemont’s Jeff Davis both suffered injuries in last weekend’s season openers and will miss most of the season, if not all of it. Lynch suffered a cracked fibula and torn tendon in his right ankle. Davis suffered a broken collarbone. Both were injured while trying to elude a pass rush.

Although ranking rather high among the states, Nebraska is less than halfway toward having a top-notch system of government-sponsored services for the seriously mentally ill, a national report released Tuesday said. Nebraska ranked 10th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in a survey published jointly by the Public Citizen Health Research Group and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. “Housing for the mentally ill is the Achilles tendon of services in Nebraska,” the report said. Nebraska got only one of five points for housing.
