A Team Divided; Soviets Win Gold
Arvidas Sabonis, the 7-foot-4 center, who is supposed to be the heart and soul of the squad, reportedly is not only feuding with Gomelski, but with some of his teammates as well. And that’s not to mention his injured Achilles tendon, which has made him look like a statue in Red Square during part of this Olympic tournament. Yesterday in the gold medal game the Soviets put it all together against Yugoslavia, a team that had beaten them by 13 points in the first game of the Olympics. The final margin was 76-63, but except for an early Yugoslav run, the Soviets controlled matters from start to finish. In fact, although NBA scouts and executives were spotted all over the stands, and even with Khomitchious wearing an Atlanta Hawks sweatshirt, not everyone expects Russian NBA players soon.

OLYMPIC GAMES IN SEOUL MEN’S BASKETBALL Soviets’ 2nd-half surge takes gold
It has been a remarkable three months for the Soviet team. In the first days of July, its chances of winning the Olympic gold seemed remote at best and hopeless at worst. Center Arvydas Sabonis was recovering slowly from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. Vladimir Tkachenko, Sabonis’ backup, was out with a back problem. The Soviets finally beat their Olympic jinx against the Yugoslavs, who defeated them in both the 1976 and 1980 Olympics. The latter was an embarrassing loss in Moscow. No Yugoslav lead has been comfortable in recent years against the Soviets. [Dino Radja]‘s field goal was the last for the Yugoslavs until Zelimir Obradovic hit a baseline jumper at the halftime buzzer.

OLYMPIC GAMES IN SEOUL OLYMPIC JOURNAL Blazers’ coach denies treatments for Sabonis cost U.S. gold medal
Portland Trail Blazers coach MIKE SCHULER says efforts to help rehabilitate injured Soviet basketball star ARVYDAS SABONIS had nothing to do with the Soviet victory over the Americans in Olympic basketball. The 7-foot-4 Sabonis, a Blazers draft pick in 1986, spent 3 1/2 months in Portland before the Olympics working on his injured Achilles tendon. Sabonis’ stay in Portland prompted U.S. Olympic basketball coach JOHN THOMPSON to tell The Oregonian newspaper in May that the Trail Blazers’ efforts were a “fulfillment of Lenin’s prophecy: the capitalists are selling (the communists) the rope that they can hang us with.”

Olympics `88/Bronze causes self-exam
The U.S. can cite seven wins in eight games of the tournament, a feared defensive reputation and decent enough offensive stats. But the fact remains there was only one satisfying goal in Seoul for the U.S. team and they failed to achieve it. Now the disappointing loss to the Soviet Union in the semifinal game has Coach John Thompson advocating more international play prior to the Olympics for future U.S. teams and the addition of NBA players to the national squad. One player who was available to the Soviets was 7-foot-4 Arvydas Sabonis, who had been drafted last spring by the Portland Trail Blazers. The NBA club brought Sabonis to Portland and helped him rehabilitate a ruptured Achilles tendon and Sabonis turned around and controlled the middle on offense and defense in defeating the U.S.

Martin’s a little rusty but he’s ready to roll
He will start at left defensive end Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. He’ll replace Al (Bubba) Baker, who replaced William Gay, who replaced rookie Al Noga. All this replacing was going on because [Doug] Martin missed training camp and the first three games of the regular season because of a contract dispute. Martin was on the field for 36 of 62 defensive plays against Philadelphia and had two tackles and a sack. But with Baker suspended by the NFL for one game, Martin is bound to play much more against Miami. # Running back Darrin Nelson’s right ankle might not be 100 percent healed, but for the first time in three weeks he’ll be able to play on it. Nelson missed victories over Chicago and Philadelphia because of stretched tendons. He’s expected to play against the Dolphins, but coach Jerry Burns said Allen Rice will start for the third week in a row. Said Nelson: “I’ll probably be a little slower and I might not cut quite as sharp, either.”

Bengals Aren’t Blowing Leads / NFL NOTES
Kelly Stouffer, Seattle’s new starting QB, on the play where he tripped over a guard, caught an elbow from teammate Curt Warner (breaking his nose), got up and passed for a touchdown against the 49ers: “Can you imagine being the defensive back trying to read the quarterback, and all of a sudden there’s no quarterback?” . . . The Seahawks’ Chuck Knox says it’s the first time in 16 years as a head coach he can remember starting a rookie quarterback . . . Seattle QB Jeff Kemp’s reaction to his demotion? “Disappointed and surprised.” Can you name Atlanta’s new starting backfield? It’s QB Steve Dils and RBs John Settle and James Primus. QB Chris Miller is out four weeks with a sprained ankle, and RBs Gerald Riggs five to six weeks (sprained knee) and Sylvester Stamps three weeks (hamstring). Kenny Flowers, the original starting halfback, was lost for the year in training camp with a knee injury. Is Jim McMahon losing it? He’s only 29 and in his seventh season, but he has had every injury known to mankind (currently a bruised knee tendon). McMahon ranks 20th in the NFL in passing and he seems to be having trouble finding the open receivers. In critiquing the passing game this week, Bears Coach Mike Ditka specifically exempted the receivers from blame. “They’re running good routes right now,” Ditka said. “It looks like the receivers are getting open downfield. I don’t see a problem there.” Which leaves you know who. Safety Mark Kelso of Buffalo, which plays Chicago this week, said that McMahon is “not as mobile as he was.”

The Plyometric Controversy
Plyometrics, a form of exercise for gymnasts and other athletes that claims to “train” the elastic properties of tendons and muscle tissue, thereby creating “explosive strength,” is discussed. A good deal of controversy surrounds plyometrics because its claims have not been proven and it increases the potential for traumatic injury.

Brighter Future For Stay Cables
The Civil Engineering article in April 1988 on cable stayed bridges was run by the New York Times, prompting telephone calls from as far away as Canada and Germany. Cable corrosion was being discussed in engineering offices everywhere. Some better cable systems have already begun to appear. One such stay cable design is currently being used on the Akkar Bridge in Sikkim, high in India’s Himalayan mountains. Its wires are ordinary prestressing tendons up to 7mm thick, arranged in a hexagonal shape, and its prefabrication includes filling and coating in the shop. The filling is a 2-component polyurethane applied with a special machine that fills into all voids. Despite advancements in cable design, many engineers suggest using galvanized wire, not using cement grout and providing accessibility for inspection.

INJURED FINGER KEEPS BERLAND FROM FINDING JUDO GOLD
Bob Berland, a judoka and also a commodities trader with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, stood in the middle of Seoul’s Changchung Gymnasium Friday night, and awaited his opening-round half-heavyweight (95K) match with West Germany’s Marc Meiling. But on this night, he was really and severely limited by the finger he had dislocated in practice just four days earlier. He had popped it back in place then, yet the next day, when he picked up a bag, he dislocated it again. It was then that he knew his injury was serious and, Thursday, he and U.S. Olympic Committee trainer Jean Miles met to figure out how to tape it for the competition. While doing that, they dislocated it seven more times, and now it was a multiple dislocation with but a single tendon in place.

Johnson Finally Speaks: `I’m Innocent’;Sprinter Tells Toronto Paper He Took No Banned Steroids
One possible reason was suggested earlier by Gary Lubin, a coach on the staff of [Ben Johnson]‘s Toronto track club. Lubin said Johnson’s personal physician, Dr. George Astaphan, had boasted openly about how he had been able to mask the “little something extra” he had given Johnson before the sprinter ran a record-breaking race in Rome last year. In Saturday’s interview, the account given by Johnson closely coincided with that of Astaphan, who has visited the Johnson home since the scandal broke. Johnson denied Astaphan had given him banned steroids. “He is like a father to me,” the runner said. Like Astaphan, Johnson acknowledged the physician gave him cortisone before the race to treat an injured Achilles’ tendon. The only other medication he took, Johnson said, was a drink concocted by Astaphan.

Johnson breaks his silence Series: Summer Olympics ’88
Several people have accused [Ben Johnson]‘s doctor, Jamie Astaphan of Toronto, of administering steroids to athletes, and there have been suggestions he gave them to Johnson at his premises on the island of St. Kitts. But Johnson said he does not suspect his doctor of prescribing a banned drug. Johnson noted that he suffered a torn hamstring and badly damaged tendon during a meet in Europe last February. The treatment of that injury and a subsequent muscle pull sparked a dispute between Johnson and his long-time coach, Charlie Francis. Another coach at Johnson’s Toronto track club has accused Astaphan of giving Johnson ”a little something extra” that had to be ”masked” before the sprinter set the Rome record.

Corson sparks healthy Habs to easy win over Isles
The Canadiens have listed [Stephane Richer] as “day-to-day”, which is also the way they’ve listed Petr Svoboda, who injured his hand against the Bruins. The certainty is that nobody came out of last night’s game limping, if only because the Canadiens and Islanders declared peace a long time ago – particularly in terms of exhibition games. What that means is that hitting is a four-letter word, and entertainment an unintelligible one. It’s exhibition time. Don’t rock the boat, eh? NOTES – Hitman Serge Roberge is out for at least eight weeks with a partial tendon laceration. A linesman skated over his hand trying to break up a fight involving Roberge and a member of the Adirondack Red Wings. Roberge was due to play with the Canadiens against Quebec tonight.

PRO FOOTBALL / WEEK 5 Raiders Will Need More Than Just a Half Boomer, Bengals Roaring Into Game at Coliseum Today With a 4-0 Record
Nothing has stopped the Bengals this time. The club has the top offense in the American Football Conference. [Boomer Esiason] is the top-rated quarterback in the NFL at 104.7. He already has thrown for 1,040 yards and has 9 touchdown passes and just 3 interceptions. Receiver Eddie Brown leads the conference in yards gained with 417, averaging 27.8 a catch. [James Brooks] is fourth in the AFC in rushing with 288 yards. don’t forget [Ickey Woods], more than just a pretty hairdo. A second-round draft choice out of Nevada Las Vegas, where he was the nation’s top rusher last season, Woods is third on the Bengals in that department behind Brooks and Stanley Wilson. Woods scored his first 2 touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns last week. Raider center Bill Lewis (ankle sprain) is not expected to play, but offensive tackle Don Mosebar (also an ankle sprain) may see some action. . . . For Cincinnati, both wide receiver Mike Martin (sore Achilles’ tendon) and guard Max Montoya (groin injury) may not play. . . . Both Emanuel King and [Daryl Smith] are eligible to return today, but King has been bothered by back spasms this week. Tight end Eric Kattus is out with a knee injury. . . . The Bengals have never won on the road against the Raiders. That includes 7 games in Oakland and 1 at the Coliseum in 1985.

Akins practicing law, eyes politics
AUSTIN – To say this guy who called Marty Akins was disenchanted would be like saying Akins was a decent quarterback. This guy had three lawyers botch his case before turning to Akins, an All-Southwest Conference quarterback turned lawyer. Akins knows a little about personal injury. He finished out his Longhorn career on a badly battered right knee hurt against TCU. Akins played the last three games, including a Bluebonnet Bowl win over Colorado, with a knee that required cartilage removal and a tendon transplant the day after the bowl game. Akins was drafted in the 11th round by the St. Louis Cardinals, lasting about eight weeks before he was traded to New Orleans. Then he got his first hands-on taste of litigation, when the Cardinals wouldn’t pay him money he felt they owed. Akins won.

BRIEFLY: CU’s injuries were all listed as minor by CU director of sports medicine Dave Burton: Erich Kissick (sprained left ankle), [Eric Bieniemy] (bruised shoulder), Alfred Williams (strained stomach muscle) and Eric Hannah (back). Hannah did not play because his back problems worsened before the game. Ken Culbertson handled all placekicking duties. . . . CSU fullback Todd Yert missed the game with an Achilles’ tendon injury, but he is expected to play Saturday at Brigham Young. . . . CU’s 280 total yards are the fewest allowed by CSU this season. . . . CSU’s 1988 losses are by six to Air Force, eight to Hawaii, 11 to Arizona State and four to Colorado. During CU’s 27-23 win Saturday afternoon over the CSU Rams, [Don DeLuzio] showed his legs were OK. He picked off a Scooter Molander pass and raced 58 yards for the Buffs’ first score. He intercepted another Molander pass later in the second quarter to set up a field goal that provided CU with a 17-13 halftime margin.

Injury doesn’t stop work for Jamaica
A severed tendon forced Jim Laws to return to Canada from Jamaica following Hurricane Gilbert. But the injury hasn’t stopped the 30-year-old CUSO worker from lending a helping hand to the relief effort. Laws, who grew up in Ottawa and graduated in dairy science from the University of Guelph, was completing a two-year CUSO contract as a technician at Jamaica’s only cheese factory when Hurricane Gilbert struck. ”It didn’t make sense to be a martyr,” Laws says of his decision to have the operation in Canada. In Jamaica, power and water were cut off after the hurricane, and there were blood shortages.

Muscle a factor in meat tenderness
Meat is muscle. Muscles are really small bundles of muscle fibres held together by connective tissues. Whole muscles are attached to bones by tendons or by direct contact with the bone. Consequently, small muscle ends have a heavy concentration of tough tendon and connective tissues. The larger muscle centres are more tender because these tough tissues are more diffused throughout the meat. The sirloin tip is a conical-shaped muscle from the front of the hind leg. It lies beside the medium tender round. Off next to its larger end is the tender sirloin butt (top sirloin). At its smaller end is the tough shank.
