Blazers’ Soviet Star Fights Playboy Image

Stories are circulating in the Soviet Union that [Arvydas Sabonis], the Portland Trail Blazers’ first-round draft choice in 1986 who is in the United States for rehabilitation of his injured right Achilles tendon, has fallen victim to the capitalist system, Trail Blazers spokesman John Lashway said. Sabonis has been portrayed there as an American playboy, living it up at the NBA team’s expense, Lashway said. Sabonis is a star center on the Soviet National Team, who the Trail Blazers hope to sign to an NBA contract. He has demonstrated a strong work ethic and has even refused some offers of accomodations by the Trail Blazers. Sabonis has a queen-size bed and [Tim Renn] said he refused an offer of a larger bed. Dr. Kestutis Vitkus, Sabonis’ traveling companion and interpreter who shares an apartment with the Soviet star and is involved in the rehabilitation therapy, does acknowledge that Sabonis has little trouble getting dates, despite the language barrier.

    Notes.

New York Mets second baseman Tim Teufel was activated Saturday from the 15-day disabled list. Teufel had gone on the disabled list May 17 after suffering strained tendons in his left hand. Before the injury, Teufel was hitting .238 in 32 games with 2 home runs and 13 runs batted in. – The Milwaukee Brewers have called up infielder Billy Joe Robidoux from their top minor league affiliate to replace injured first baseman Greg Brock. Robidoux, 24, was batting .276 with 7 homers and 26 RBIs in 46 games for Denver, the Brewers’ Class AAA minor league affiliate. – Pittsburgh’s Barry Bonds is on a pace to have the lowest number of runs batted in by a player to hit 30 or more homers. He has 13 homers and 23 RBIs. At that pace, he would finish with 38 homers and 62 RBIs. Cleveland’s Brook Jacoby had 32 homers and 69 RBIs last season.

Risen Star likely out of Travers

The betting in this corner is that champion 3-year-old Risen Star, winner of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, will miss the $1 million Travers Stakes Aug 20 at Saratoga. “There’s a chance we’ll start him, but we’re really shooting for the $1 million Super Derby Sept. 25 at Louisiana Downs,” trainer Louis Roussel III said. Some horsemen press when it comes to a rich, important race like the Travers, but Risen Star has a suspensory leg problem (involving one of the supporting tendons of the ankle) that needs a good rest. Risen Star was given ultrasound treatments and iced for an hour every day for a week leading up to the Belmont Stakes, and his right foreleg actually was frozen in ice until he went to the paddock for his tremendous 14 3/4-length victory. The schedule for Risen Star isn’t official. They’re going to keep him at Belmont for a while if he responds to icing and the ultrasound treatment. If Roussel learns the colt needs more time and must miss the [Travers], he’ll be shipped home to the Fair Grounds in New Orleans for more rest and anti-inflammatory treatments.

Padres reliever Mark Davis is the right choice for All-Stars

ADD PADRES-GIANTS TRADE — With Dave Dravecky having undergone arthroscopic surgery last Saturday to repair damage in his sore left shoulder, the pendulum may have swung toward the Padres in the seven- player deal that sent Dravecky, Craig Lefferts and Kevin Mitchell to the Giants for [Mark Davis], Chris Brown, Mark Grant and Keith Comstock. Dravecky, who went home to Youngstown, Ohio, for a week before starting his rehabilitation, is expected to be out anywhere from six to eight weeks. In the process of clearing away old scar tissue, surgeons found a 30-percent tear in the tendon connecting Dravecky’s biceps to his shoulder. In San Francisco, Lefferts has been spotty of late with a 1-4 record and five saves. But he owns a creditable 2.43 ERA. Mitchell, who may be on his way to left field from third base because of the departure of Jeffrey Leonard, has struggled. He is hitting .234 with seven homers and 29 RBIs in 205 at-bats.

Penguins ice Creamer, while North Stars fire just about everybody

Herb Brooks is out as Minnesota North Stars coach and in Pittsburgh the Penguins canned Pierre Creamer after one season. Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck of the New York Rangers cut tendons in his left wrist during a freak accident in his home in Rye, N.Y., Monday night and will miss the first half of the 1988-89 NHL season . . . Mario Lemieux, the NHL’s most valuable player in a media vote, has also been selected the league’s most outstanding player by his peers. Lemieux was the runaway 1988 winner of the Lester B. Pearson Award, which is voted on by members of the National Hockey League Players’ Association . . . Defenceman Craig Hartsburg has asked the Minnesota North Stars to trade him, his agent, Bill Watters, said yesterday. Hartsburg, the North Stars’ first choice in the 1979 entry draft, is upset with the team’s current state of affairs, said Watters.

“The best-case scenario is the middle of training camp,” said [John Vanbiesbrouck], who cut three tendons and damaged nerves during a freak accident at his home Sunday night. “The healing process has to really co-operate with the therapy for that to happen.”

TRACK AND FIELD; Cooper Emerging As a Threat in 100

”I was doing my own workouts there the same time the team did theirs. The coach took the credit. Why didn’t he coach me and push me? He’s basically a distance coach and doesn’t know anything about the sprints and long jump. We didn’t get along.” Coach’s Response ”We don’t have as many coaches as some teams have. We have three coaches out there when I’m not tied up with my work as athletic director. If he’s talking about individual attention 100 percent of the time, then he didn’t get anough coaching. But I think he did. I’ve been coaching 21 years and I’ve never had a complaint like that before.” ”I know I’m the best,” he said. ”I hurt my right Achilles’ tendon and my left knee, and they stlll bother me, but I’ll be ready for the Olympic trials next month. I’m getting excited. I’m going to make the Olympic team in the 100 and I hope in the long jump. I’m going to do great. I don’t let anybody get me down.” TAILBACK WINS LONG JUMP

VOLLEYBALL’S HIS GAME . . . AND TIMMONS IS MAKING A NAME, ON AND OFF COURT

The 6-foot-5-inch redhead had a match-high 33 spikes in Tuesday’s exhibition match victory over the Soviet Union in Portland, Maine. His coaches and teammates say [Steve Timmons], 1984 MVP of the US Olympic Team, is the hardest hitter on the team. “I was sitting in bed after I broke my patella tendon (above the kneecap) in 1985, and I said to myself, ‘I’ve got to think of something else to do if I never play volleyball again,’ ” said Timmons, a USC grad. “That’s when I thought of the optic yellow ball.” “[Jeanie Buss] is good friends with Linda Rambis, so sometimes Kurt (Lakers forward Rambis) and I shoot around,” Timmons said.

SPORTS OF THE TIMES; WHEN WILLNORMAN BE UP TO NORM?

[Andy Bean] wasn’t a consistent golfer again until 1984, when he ranked third in PGA Tour earnings; in 1986 he ranked fourth. And when he was asked if that injury had damaged his career, he shrugged. ”I don’t know,” he said. ”I’ll never know.” Bean, however, does know is that his midforearm cast atrophied the muscles in his left hand and wrist. ”I had no muscle tissue there,” he said. He shook the big gold watch on his left wrist. ”I felt a twinge in my left wrist in the third round of the Colonial,” he recalled. ”I couldn’t squeeze the last three fingers. I thought it would go away, but when I came out to hit balls on Sunday, I couldn’t hold onto the club. I was shanking my sand wedge. I thought I’d have to withdraw, but I’ll just hit one more shot. When I hit it, I heard a big ol’ crack and all the pain went away. The doctor told me later that the pain had been caused by the tendon flipping over the bone. And when I heard that crack, the tendon had popped back in place.” ”But if you can’t hold a club properly because of the pain in your hand or your wrist, you can’t play this game,” Andy Bean said. ”That’s why an injury like [Greg Norman] has is so dangerous. But he’s a fighter, he’ll do whatever he has to. He’ll be back.”

LEAGUE IS FIXING RULES? NOW, THAT’S A CHANGE

Although goalie John Vanbiesbrouck is expected to be back with the Rangers now by “mid-training camp,” don’t think New York general manager Phil Esposito isn’t preparing for the worst. He is scanning the list of goaltenders who may be free without compensation July 1, but he’s wise enough to keep his mouth shut to avoid tampering charges. In a freak accident at the goaltender’s home last week, Vanbiesbrouck suffered severe cuts on his left wrist, cuts that required five hours of microsurgery to remove glass chips and repair tendon damage. The original report listed his projected inactivity at 4-6 months, but Vanbiesbrouck says he is optimistic he can return “by the middle of training camp.” The Rangers still have a top goalie in Bob Froese, but they will monitor Vanbiesbrouck’s recovery closely. They could make a bid for Reggie Lemelin of the Bruins or Bill Smith of the Islanders if those two have not signed contracts by July 1. Lemelin is coveted also by the Quebec Nordiques. But remember this: Neither he nor Smith is a totally free agent provided his current team offers him a 15-percent increase. That offer enables the team to retain the right of first refusal or a right to compensation. The choice, however, is the player’s. He can tell his team to take the right of first refusual or go to arbitration. Furthermore, the player’s current team could match the new offer (within a 10-day time limit) and then trade him to the team that made the offer. All of that may be unlikely in Lemelin’s case. “I think we’re close,” said [Harry Sinden] . . . The Detroit Red Wings were so certain they’d get Reggie Savage of the Quebec league at the NHL draft they had a 400-word press release and a team jersey ready to go for “the third black to be drafted by Detroit.” Instead, the Washington Capitals beat them to Savage. A copy of the release fell into the hands of hockey writer Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette, which left the Red Wings red-faced — for being too well-prepared, and wrong . . . The last stamp of approval the Chicago Blackhawks sought before drafting Jeremy Roenick of Thayer eighth in the first round was from their Boston-area scout Steve Lyons on the morning of the draft. The twist is that Steve’s father, Joe Lyons, is the Bruins’ local scout.

Shot-putter Brenner injures knee, will miss the Olympics

Brenner suffered a three-inch tear in the patellar tendon under his left kneecap while performing bounding exercises in the school’s weight room. “I’m done for the season,” Brenner said Monday from his hospital room at the UCLA Medical Center. “If we had a different system (of choosing the Olympic team), I would have motivation to make it back for the Games (in September). There is no way I can compete in the Olympic Trials (which begin July 15). I will barely be walking by the Trials.” Brenner, a Fullerton High graduate and brother of New Orleans Saints tight end Hoby Brenner, made the jump to international class competition in the spring of 1984, when he set a personal best of 71-11 and won the NCAA championship. He trailed off later in the season, however, finishing fourth at the Olympic Trials.

Backes hates to gain from rival’s pain

Ron Backes, Minnesota’s shot put king, caught a big break last week. John Brenner, the U.S. record holder in the event, blew out his knee and will not compete in the Olympic track and field trials next month in Indianapolis. It would seem that Backes’ chances of making the U.S. team, which already were strong, suddenly have become can’t-miss. Brenner tore the patella tendon under his left knee while doing a bounding drill; he was jumping from the floor onto boxes up to 54 inches high. His U.S. shot put mark is 73 feet, 10 3/4 inches. Backes has thrown for more than 72 feet in practice, but his best in competition is 68-7 3/4. Morgan still alive/ Wrestler John Morgan is down, but not out. The 180-pounder from Bloomington lost 6-0 in the first match of a best-of-three series to Jeff Stuebing, of McMinnville, Ore., Friday in Pensacola, Fla. Morgan, ranked No. 1 in the weight class, knew his back was to the wall to make it to Seoul, but he didn’t know his neck would be stiff as a board.

After 16 Years, U.S. and Soviets Get a Rematch

The two most important players for the Soviet Union – Arvydas Sabonis and Sharunas Marchulionis – are recuperating from injuries and did not practice with the team until just before the Olympics began. Marchulionis, the most valuable player in the European qualifying tournament in July, missed two months with a stomach injury. The 7-foot-2 Sabonis, considered one the world’s top big men, missed two full seasons of competition with an Achilles’ tendon injury. “Sabonis is great talent and very good character,” Soviet Coach Alexander Gomelsky said. “I don’t know any other player could not play 18 months and play like Sabonis. Every day he has practiced two hours.
