McCord show is about Inuit clothing

The show is about how Inuit clothing is made – from the hunt for animal and sea-bird pelts to the laborious sewing of apparel with sinew obtained from the tendons of caribou or narwhal. In Inuktitut, the word for sinew is ivalu. Because the exhibition will be the first of its scope, curators Betty Issenman and Catherine Rankin spent several years doing background research on Inuit clothing and related artifacts from the Canadian Arctic, Greenland and Siberia. An accompanying 100-page catalogue will be available by late May. The McCord will also hold demonstrations on sewing and beadwork of Inuit skin clothing and an Inuit fashion show on May 7 at 2 p.m.

Insiders’ Restaurants: A Bit of Foodie Heaven

Harry Rolnick, an American writer and serious foodie living in Hong Kong, led us to the Sze Chuen Lau Restaurant, at 466 Lockhart Rd. in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island. The menu contained more than 200 mind-boggling items, including duck tongue, fish lips, hot perfumed chicken, pig’s kidneys, cow and pig tripe, jellyfish, abalone, sea cucumber, shredded eel, bream, frog, fish heads, cow tendon in casserole, pig tendon in crisp rice, black jelly pudding and peanut paste sweet soup. The menu is also all over the map, but delightfully so, albeit at considerable caloric cost. Appetizers span from Russian caviar, Scottish salmon, French snails and local fois gras with Cumberland sauce to soft-shell crab and lobster with romaine lettuce glazed in brie, scallops stuffed in an apple and glazed with cider cream sauce, sliced raw Kobe beef with tomato pepper sauce, smoked sturgeon and avocado souffle’ in lime-tomato sauce, and steamed herbed mussels with caviar on cabbage. Come again? Seafood entrees were only slightly less exotic: poached hen lobster on puree of fresh greens with champagne butter sauce, king prawns braised with avocado and green peppercorn sauce (which [Steve Leonard] swooned over), glazed sea bass in morel sauce, turbot medallions and walnut mousse in saffron sauce, and lobster decked out with fresh mangos, to which I happily succumbed.

Artificial Ligaments Offer Hope for Injured Knees

Now the introduction of artificial ligaments-strands of synthetic fibers-have shortened the healing process. They have also offered hope to thousands who had unsuccessful operations through the traditional method of reattaching the torn ligaments by using tendons from other parts of the bodies. The artificial ligaments initially used also failed the test of time. [Marc Friedman] said ligaments placed in knees 10 years ago do not work, but those implanted within the last five years have a chance. For implantation as an artificial ligament, an eyelet at each end of a six- to eight-inch piece of braided Gore-Tex is attached to the femur, or thigh bone, and the tibia, the major bone in the lower leg.

Arthritis: when surgery is the only chance

[Danea] suffers from a form of JRA called poly-articular arthritis. It has retarded her height. At 4 feet, 11 inches, her younger brother Damon, 11, is the same height. It has also slowed the growth of her lower jaw. As well, the tendons in her fingers and toes have seized, leaving them bent and immobile. Physiotherapy also plays a large part because regular exercise has been shown to reduce the long-term effects of most forms of arthritis. Patients at the Arthritis Centre, a treatment and education centre operated by the Arthritis Society, are also referred to an occupational therapist who helps them protect their joints from further damage in the home and at work. The fourth stage is the actual medical treatment, whether drugs or surgery. Still, for some, surgery is the only alternative. At 86, Phyllis Perry says she is about as close to being the Bionic Woman as she can get. Plagued with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, Perry has had both knees replaced and had operations on one hip, one foot and two hands.

A new dawn breaks for Gophers lineman Melander // Injury doesn’t overshadow brightened family situation

Pivoting on the carpet of Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Melander caught his cleats, popped his right knee and hasn’t played for the Gophers since. He had major ligament and cartilage damage, what team orthopedist Pat Smith called “very significant injury to the knee, no getting away from it.” Melander was then a starter at outside linebacker, a redshirt freshman from Fridley who already was establishing himself in the Big Ten. A week later, in Ann Arbor, Mich., Wolverines coach Bo Schembechler mentioned to Gophers coach John Gutekunst how good Melander looked to him on film. Melander tried to play last spring, at defensive tackle, but the knee held him back. He tried again last fall, but he stretched the tendons in his left foot, compensating for his right knee – and missed the season. During the winter, he picked up two new surgical scars, where screws were removed. Melander plays right tackle behind Dan Liimatta, one of the building blocks of next fall’s line. Melander, who has a B average in business, is smart enough to realize his best chance to play would be to move to the left side, where redshirt sophomore Mark Drabczak is trying to move in. Only yesterday, Melander said he asked offensive line coach Jim Hueber if he could switch, and Hueber said he would take the request to offensive coordinator Larry Beckish.

SMITH LOSES SAVE BUT GETS THE WIN

It wasn’t to be. With the Red Sox ahead, 3-2, and two outs and two runners on in the ninth, [Lee Smith] had a 1-2 count on the Rangers’ DH. But his next pitch slithered off Rick Cerone’s glove and rolled to the screen, allowing Scott Fletcher to score the tying run. Bob Stanley will debut tomorrow in Winter Haven, pitching for the Winter Haven Red Sox against the Osecola Astros. Stanley, who suffered sliced tendons in his pitching hand in an offseason accident, will be put on the 20-day injury rehabilitation list. After his stint tomorrow, he will work six innings next Monday for Winter Haven. He then will move to Pawtucket to continue his comeback.

Capitals Lose Langway For Remainder of Series; Washington Seeks NHL Action Against Devils’ Verbeek

[Rod Langway] received a three-inch laceration, a half-inch deep, to the gastrocnemius tendon and muscle, located just above the Achilles’ tendon. The cut was sutured and protected by a short leg cast that will remain in place for seven to 10 days, after which Langway’s situation will be reevaluated. A Leader’s Season of Pain; After Latest Injury, He Tells Verbeek It’s Just `Part of Game’

Along came Pat Verbeek. It was Verbeek’s skate that sliced into the back of [Rod Langway]‘s leg the night before, resulting in a deep wound three inches long-a laceration of a tendon and muscle, according to the Capitals-that will keep Langway out of the rest of the best-of-seven series with the Devils, which resumes tonight. The cordial meeting wasn’t their first conversation of the day. Yesterday morning, Langway phoned Verbeek at the Devils’ hotel. It wasn’t Verbeek calling Langway. But the injured Langway calling Verbeek. And Verbeek seemed genuinely touched by Langway’s gesture. This marks the second straight series that Langway has been injured. In the Patrick Division first-round playoff against Philadelphia, he missed Games 4 and 5 after being run into and suffering a bad charley horse in brutal Game 3. The latest injury to Langway left Capitals’ brass far less understanding toward Verbeek than Langway is.

After ’87 Sidekicks, any team could get label of champion

Goalkeepers: Strikers — Lettieri (24-19, 3.99 GAA) and Tim Harris (7-5, 5.10 GAA). Blast — Scott Manning (19-20, 4.36 GAA), Mike Harrison (0-2, 4.01 GAA) and Keith Van Eron (6-7, 4.51 GAA). Cleveland Force (30-26) vs. Dallas Sidekicks (28-28) The Force was heavily favored when it met the ‘Kicks in last year’s East final, but after winning the series’ opening game, 5-3, lost four straight and was eliminated. P.J. Johns has responded to being Cleveland’s only goalkeeper for the last 16 games after Victor Nogueira ruptured an Achilles tendon in San Diego March 2. Johns won 10 of his last 14 starts and finished with the lowest GAA in Force history. Expect a defensive struggle — the Sidekicks had the league’s second-best team D, allowing 206 goals; Cleveland was third, allowing 219. The Force’s penalty-killing unit, which set a league record with an 81.2 percent success rate, should have no trouble with Dallas’ ninth- ranked power-play quartet. Except for Tatu’s season-ending knee injury, both teams are healthy. Force won season series, 6-2.

    SPORTS DIGEST

Washington Capitals defenseman Rod Langway will miss the rest of the Patrick Division final against New Jersey with a severe laceration of the left leg, an injury suffered in an incident that has infuriated Capitals officials. The team announced yesterday that Langway, the team captain and two-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman, was treated for a three-inch-long, half-inch-deep gash to a tendon and muscle in the back of his left calf. Langway was injured in the third period of Washington’s 3-1, series-opening victory Monday when he was struck by the skate blade of New Jersey’s Pat Verbeek. — USF women’s coaches Bill Nepfel and Mary Hile Nepfel announced the signing of 5-10 guard Joy Boyenga, the most valuable player at Merced High, to a letter of intent to attend USF. Boyenga averaged 20 points and 14.4 rebounds this season.

    SPORTSWIRE

Washington Capitals defenseman Rod Langway suffered a lacerated tendon in his left leg in Game 1 of the Capitals’ playoff series with the New Jersey Devils on Monday and will miss the rest of the series, the Capitals announced. Langway was injured when New Jersey’s Pat Verbeek stuck his skate out and it inadvertantly cut across the back of Langway’s leg. Washington general manager David Poile has sent a tape of the incident to the NHL offices for further review, but Verbeek said Langway called him Tuesday and told him he didn’t think Verbeek intentionally injured him. … The Quebec Nordiques said Maurice Filion will relinquish his duties as general manager and will become vice president of hockey operations.

    Giants Seek Best Athletes

”If anybody says the Giants have decided to do something,” said General Manager George Young, ”they’re in confusion. We haven’t settled on anything. It’s a question of who’s sitting there. It has nothing to do with the team. It has something to do with what’s in the draft.” Offensive tackle is a problem because Brad Benson has retired, and Karl Nelson is still recovering from treatment for Hodgkin’s disease, a form of cancer, and from surgery to repair damaged tendons in his left shoulder. He was also found to have arthritis in the shoulder, but his recovery appears ahead of schedule. Nelson is working out every day, and Ronnie Barnes, the Giants’ trainer, said he was encouraged.

`Little Mary’ Slaney, once miles from nowhere, has her career back on track

“I’m feeling great, training better than I have for a long, long time,” said [Mary Slaney], holder of every American record from 800 through 10,000 meters, but still without the Olympic medal she covets. It was, Slaney recalls, at last spring’s Pepsi Invitational at UCLA. Warming up for the mile with a taped calf, she felt pain in a right Achilles’ tendon that already had been operated on once by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stan James. In a way, everything that Slaney accomplishes from here on out could be looked at as a gift bought on borrowed running time. But there’s more than luck involved. This time, with the guidance of Brazil’s Luiz de Oliveira, also the coach of Olympic champion Joaquim Cruz, and the help of husband Richard, she’s worked at her recovery as never before.

Lost in LA:Clippers look for a way out of the wilderness

Young or old, most of the Clippers found themselves on the injured list this season. During the 70-loss struggle of 1986-87, Los Angeles led the league with 260 player-games lost to injury. The Clippers outdid themselves in that department this season, with 268 player-games lost going into tonight’s finale. Point guard Norm Nixon, twice an All-Star, was coming back from a season lost to a knee injury. [Gene Shue] banked heavily on Nixon’s experience helping the Clippers’ youngsters, and the former Laker looked to be rounding into fine form when — two days before the season opener — he went down with a ruptured Achilles tendon. OLYMPICS; Runners Aiming For Gold, Cash

”The idea is to make the team,” said Dick Beardsley, who has had two operations on his Achilles’ tendon and two years off since his best marathon of 2:08:53 in 1982. ”Although I could see if three guys were running together at 24 or 25 miles, knowing they have made the team, one of them might not push it in case he did any damage to himself.” ”I have another view,” said [Bill Donakowski]. ”I’m a competitor. I always want to win.” ”Everybody takes tactics and strategy into a race,” said Ed Eyestone, a longshot contender. ”But I always end up going by my gut feelings in the middle of a race. If someone goes out early, I have to rely on a gut feeling to go with him or stay back, figuring he’ll come back to me. I’m sure in this race, we all have the same thing in mind: finish in the top three.” Times Are Close

The Hawks, who once drafted Sabonis themselves and currently hold NBA rights to Soviet stars Alexander Volkov and Valery Tikonenko, agreed to help with arrangements for Sabonis’ visit, utilizing their connections in the Soviet Union.
