BURKS SITS OUT; CLEMENS BETTER
Ellis Burks’ bum wrist has flared up again — and he could be out of the lineup for the Oakland series. “Same nagging pain as before,” said Burks, who sat out last night’s opener after taking a cortisone shot after Sunday’s game. “It’s been bothering me for the last couple of days. It calmed down after the shot, but I’ll just take it easy for a couple of days.” The swelling in Roger Clemens’ pushoff knee had subsided yesterday, and he suited up and loosened up on the field. “It’s definitely a tendon,” reported Clemens, who popped it between innings on Saturday. “I’m just happy it’s not a cartilage or a ligament.” “They told me to plan on the knee being real stiff for a few days,” said Clemens, who was named American League Player of the Week for his two 3-hit shutouts. “I’ll just run and stay up with everything I normally do, until the doctor tells me not to.” If Clemens isn’t ready by Friday, Bruce Hurst will probably start.

It’s Thumbs Up for Cal Softball Star
Today, [Angie Jacobs] is hitting .294, tops among regulars on a team that opened play in the NCAA regionals yesterday with a 3-0 victory over host Fresno State. One more victory in the best-of-three series against the No. 2-ranked Bulldogs would mean a short trip for the Bears to the national finals, which Cal is hosting at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale, Wednesday through May 29. Interim coach Diane Ninemire tells the Bears they can be the Cinderella team of this year’s tournament, with the home-field incentive and a strong emotional motive. Coach Donna Terry, who recruited this team and who led the Bears to back-to-back conference titles, is suffering from terminal Non-A/Non-B hepatitis. If 11th-ranked Cal (38-22) wins in Fresno, Terry may be able to travel from Arkansas to watch the Bears in the eight-team championship. Her thumb was hanging by a tendon, her index finger was cut to the bone and her third knuckle broken. She was rushed to a local hospital in Medford, but within three hours she was on an operating table in Portland, having been flown up on a so-called “mercy flight.” It was a week before Dr. Jerry Nye – a Cal alumnus, it turned out – knew that the thumb, reattached with a vein from Angie’s wrist, would retain circulation. Regarding a return to competitive softball, he said, “I don’t see any chance.”

Pacific 10 Track and Field Meet UCLA’s Men and Women Favored to Repeat
Hammer throw competition will be held at Cal State Los Angeles at 10 a.m. today. Events at Drake Stadium begin at 1 p.m. today and Sunday. . . . William Reed, the outstanding high school quarter-miler from Central High in Philadelphia, recently visited the USC campus. Reed is inactive with a broken bone in his foot. He had a nation-leading prep time of 45.17 seconds in the 400 last year as a junior and is credited with a hand-timed 20.5 in the 200 as a sophomore. . . . USC has won 29 conference track and field championships, but none since 1977. UCLA is the runner-up with 9 titles. . . . Women’s competition in the Pac-10 didn’t begin until last year. Oregon’s women’s team lost some projected points when Camille Jampolsky had to drop out of the heptathlon with an injured Achilles’ tendon. She was also projected for points in the high jump. . . . Best men’s races of the meet could be the 200, with UCLA’s [Henry Thomas] and [Mike Marsh] opposing California’s Atlee Mahorn, and the 800, involving USC’s [Ibrahim Okash] and Eric Schermerhorn, Stanford’s Dave Strang, Cal’s David Ottaway and Arizona’s Doug Herron. . . . UCLA’s [Gail Devers] will be trying to reclaim her American record in the 100-meter hurdles. She had it in April with a time of 12.71, only to have Jackie Joyner-Kersee break it with a 12.70 May 7 at Modesto. . . . As usual, the Oregon men are strong in the distance races and in several field events.

Involuntary Manslaughter Verdict Man Relates Anguish Over Killing Brother
With sentencing scheduled for July 21, Tanquary faces a maximum penalty of six years in prison. His attorney, San Francisco lawyer Melvin Belli, said he would recommend that Tanquary be placed on probation. Tanquary said he also feared that his brother would reinjure a part of his leg where he once underwent a tendon transplant. Tanquary said that leg was injured by his brother in a fight about 10 years ago. [Francisco P. Briseno] said he also doubted that Tanquary meant to kill his brother or else he would have aimed at a more vital area than the arm. For malice to be shown, the judge said, Tanquary would had to have exhibited “extreme” indifference to the value of life. But there was not enough evidence to show he did, the judge added.

CLEMENS, RED SOX OVERPOWERED IN 10
That conventional ending was almost anticlimactic compared to the weird happenings earlier in the evening. The start of this passion play was strange enough, and frustrating as well for the Red Sox, who continued their power outage of the past several weeks. [Roger Clemens], who had thrown a pair of three-hit shutouts in his last two outings, was making his first appearance since popping some tendons in his right knee last week. Clemens, whose record dropped to 6-2, looked beatable in the first two frames as the Angels picked at him for a pair of runs on a double by Chili Davis, a single by Jack Howell, an infield out and a triple by Dick Schofield. [Wally Joyner] crossed over the plate, but never touched it. Catcher Rick Cerone and Clemens played catch and then tag with Joyner, who was out on one of the more unusual fielder’s choices of this or any other season.

Horse Racing Notes Ohio Derby Is Gaining More Stature Each Year
Likewise, Dianne Carpenter, trainer of 14th-place Kingpost, said she’d give her gelding a rest and then ship him to Thistledown, near Cleveland, for the Ohio Derby. A couple other trainers also said they were considering the Grade II mile-and-an-eighth stakes. [Oscar Barrera]‘s suspension, which began May 17 and runs through June 30, was issued because Barrera’s horse Straight Dancer tested positive for an illegal anti-inflammatory following his victory in the third race at Aqueduct April 18. It was Barrera’s first suspension in 22 years in New York. During his absence his horses will be trained by his brother, Guillermo. The 6-year-old mare Queen Alexandra has been retired to become a brood mare after winning 19 of 46 starts and $1,031,354 … 1987 Travers winner Java Gold, sidelined with a minor foot fracture since he raced in the Jockey Club Gold Cup last October, returned to the track for his first 1988 breeze May 16, clocking three eighths of a mile at Belmont Park in 37 seconds. Joe Rosen, agent for Garden State apprentice Steve Capanas, also will handle the book of Californian jockey Marco Castenada at the summer Monmouth Park meet … Crusader Sword, who beat Forty Niner in the 1987 Saratoga Special, injured a left front tendon in a May 12 race at Belmont Park and will miss the June 11 Belmont Stakes.

Valenzuela Crushed by Mets
”Everybody just hates us because we win,” said Darryl Strawberry. ”When you’re a good team and win, everybody wants to fight you.” Tommy Lasorda, the manager of the Dodgers, fumed for a while and then said: ”I told [John Kibler], ‘You tell me [Dwight Gooden] didn’t throw at [Alfredo Griffin], but [Brian Holton] did throw at Howard Johnson, but today [David Cone] didn’t throw at [Pedro Guerrero]. What are you, a mind reader?’ ” The Mets placed Tim Teufel on the disabled list for 15 days, retroactive to last Tuesday, when he strained tendons in his left hand while swinging the bat in San Diego. Backman, who lost the job at second base in spring training, said he expected the Mets to call up Keith Miller to share it now. ”Obviously,” he said, ”I have some things to prove to Davey.”

In the second game, [Rafael Palmeiro] started the winning rally when his pop fly to short left dropped for a wind-blown double with one out in the sixth. After Vance Law grounded out, [Damon Berryhill] singled off starter Charlie Puleo, 0-1, to score Palmeiro. Three of Tanner’s last four teams finished last, and the 1988 Braves are last in the NL West The Mets recalled infielder Keith Miller from Class AAA Tidewater of the International League yesterday. Miller, who was hitting .268 in 14 games at Tidewater, is replacing second baseman Tim Teufel on the Mets’ 24-man roster. Padres proving bizarre normal in loss in 13th
Sierra struck out the first batter, pinch hitter Jeff Reed. Two outs, a two-run lead and still the Padres could not hold on. Tim Raines singled in the first run of the inning, then Mitch Webster singled to right. [Marvell Wynne]‘s throw short-hopped [Mark Parent], who could not control the ball, and the game was tied. Hubie Brooks then won it with a smash past a diving Garry Templeton at short. The Padres squandered that lead, too. Third baseman Randy Ready threw away [Andres Galarraga]‘s groundball, putting the tying run on second. Tom Foley singled in Galarraga, and the game was even. Foley was sacrificed to second, and [Luis Rivera] singled to center. Shane Mack charged and threw a one-hopper to [Benito Santiago], who caught the ball, spun and tagged Foley for the second out. The Padres were out of trouble — for the time being. “That was the weirdest game I’ve ever seen,” [Greg Booker] said. o o o Tony Gwynn took batting practice and said he will play Sunday in New York. Gwynn’s sprained right thumb is healed, and the right fielder will come off the 21-day DL Sunday. Gynn could have been activated last night. Gwynn said last night that he rushed back too quickly following tendon surgery on his left hand at the start of the season. “I didn’t strengthen the hand enough and it cost me, but this time I’ve really worked on strengthening both hands … Santiago, who snapped an 0-for-23 slide with a fourth-inning single.

”I don’t think they’re fearful,” [Randy Myers], who has allowed just 11 hits in as many appearances and is third in the National League in saves. ”But they know they are going to have to swing the bat. I can’t worry about situations. I just come in and do my job.” ”When you have your good stuff, the game is easy. I didn’t have it, but I did make some crucial pitches,” said [Ron Darling], who for the second straight game benefited from reasonable run production. ”I’ve lost a lot of times when I did hit my spots. I don’t think this evens things out, but I did appreciate it.” Tim Teufel, currently on the 15-day disabled list with strained tendons in his left hand, said yesterday he would be seen by a specialist in the next day or two for a more definitive diagnosis. ”I’m in a hurry to get this thing done and over with,” said Teufel … Keith Miller, called up from Tidewater to replace Teufel on the roster, said he was grateful for the promotion but not optimistic about how much action he would see. The Mets are scheduled to face right-handed starters at least through their weekend series with the Padres. ”That’s the luck I have,” said Miller, who saw his chances of making the team dashed at the end of spring training when he injured a wrist.

Sines of things still to come? // Freshman hurler Matt Sines has key role for Hillsborough CC Series: baseball
Three weeks ago, [Matt] Sines came close to finishing his freshman season as a backup third baseman who had only a fleeting acquaintance with a college pitching mound. But his HCC teammates refused to yield in the state tournament and, when faced with their fourth game in four days, turned the ball over to Sines. The Hawks went on to win the state tournament, and Sines was the starting and winning pitcher in the opening round of the Southeast Regional tournament against L.B. Wallace Junior College (Ala.). HCC won two of its next three games and earned a trip to the JuCo World Series. Sines, who was the Times’ high school Player of the Year in Pinellas County last season, said he had a weak tendon in his pitching shoulder during his senior year in high school. The problem flared up again during HCC’s fall season, but Sines ignored the pain and didn’t alert Hawks coach Gary Calhoun.

Lalonde: the unlikeliest of boxing champions
[David Wolf], who had taken Ray (Boom Boom) Mancini into the realm of riches, saw something in [Donny Lalonde]. Lalonde had compiled a 20-2 record as virtually a one-armed fighter. Lalonde says he isn’t sure that Wolf “didn’t just feel sorry for me, but he said he was willing to try anything.” Anything turned out to be Ken Balson, a European practitioner of something called body shaping. Balson works Lalonde’s muscles, tendons and ligaments, actually separating them to improve flexibility. And as Lalonde says, “This promotes greater blood flow which brings healing nutrients and oxygen to the injured areas.” [Leslie Stewart] is the Las Vegas favorite to win this fight. Lalonde may have the bigger punch but Stewart throws more of them. That’s what they say. But in the end this will come down to defence and stamina. The longer it goes the more it looks like Lalonde.

A Sudden Tumble Into a New World
While I rested, transportation was arranged to the main medical facility in the adjacent borough of Kopenick, the Dr. Salvador Allende Hospital. There, I was given an electrocardiogram; the right knee was X-rayed as was the chest; blood samples were taken; a short medical history was noted, and blood pressure was measured again. It had receded. The emergency ward surgeon, Jurgen Friedrich, told me I had torn the quadriceps tendon above the knee. ”I can have you transported immediately to your people in the West for treatment there,” he said, referring to West Berlin. ”But my recommendation is that you undergo an operation here right now. The quicker the better because these tissues deteriorate rapidly. We perform the operation pretty much the way your people do.” A nurse placed earphones on me and soon a classical air was covering the sounds of Dr. Friedrich’s surgery – until he started using an electric drill to make sewing holes in the cap of the damaged knee. He stopped once to say: ”The tear of the tendon is total, and that is why it is taking longer than I had expected.” Finally he showed me his work, a gentle S-curve of stitches around the knee cap. The operation, complete with a fairly loose cast, was over at 12:30 A.M. and I was wheeled back to the three card players. The wakeup call came at 4:15 A.M., when the trio resumed dealing skat cards. ”Will the game go on for a long time?” I asked from a supine position. ”Only an hour or so,” one said. Skat is not a game that lends itself to sleep. Dr. Friedrich had said he was planning to pull the stitches and put my leg in a permanent cast eight days after the airport accident, but as the time drew near he changed his mind. ”The knee is still warm,” he said. ”I know that in the United States you would be released after a week. But we are not under constraints of time or money and I would feel better if we waited another three days. Then I can say this is as good a piece of work as can be done.”

Strawberry was taken out of the game because the field was wet after a 34-minute rain delay and the Mets did not want him to aggravate his injury. Mookie Wilson replaced him. … Shea Stadium security personnel escorted a fan from his seat for throwing an inflated bat at Dodgers 3B Pedro Guerrero in the first inning Monday. …… PHILLIES manager Lee Elia’s Jeep Cherokee was stolen early Saturday morning from the parking lot of the hotel where he’s living. “I looked all over the lot for it,” Elia said after Saturday’s extra-inning victory against San Francisco, “but finally figured out it had been stolen. The cops drove me to work today.” Elia found a brighter side to his expensive problem. “Maybe that car was bad luck,” he said. … OF Bob Dernier crashed into the center-field fence while making a catch Saturday. He paid for it Monday, landing on the 15-day DL with a second-degree sprain of his right shoulder. OF Keith Miller was in uniform Monday night to take Dernier’s place. The CUBS placed RHP Al Nipper on the 15-day DL Monday, retroactive to May 28, with a strained right elbow. To replace Nipper in the pitching rotation, the Cubs called up rookie RHP Jeff Pico, who will make his major league debut when he starts today’s game vs. Cincinnati.
