Animal body-parts trade may kill off some species
In a new initiative to affect the trade in wildlife parts, the World Wildlife Fund has commissioned Dr. Jay Sordean, a California acupuncturist and a practitioner of Oriental medicine, to study the ingredients of traditional remedies and to come up with alternatives. Olympic coach Thompson blasts Trail Blazers for helping Sabonis
PORTLAND – The NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers are hurting the U.S. Olympic basketball team’s chances by providing medical treatment for Arvidas Sabonis, starting center for the Soviet Olympic team, U.S. Olympic basketball coach John Thompson said in a copyright interview in Saturday’s Oregonian newspaper. Thompson, who also is head basketball coach at Georgetown University, said he has complained to the NBA and that he deeply resents the Blazers’ efforts to help the Soviet basketball star. The 7-foot-3 Sabonis, a 1986 first-round draft choice of the Blazers, arrived in Portland at the Blazers’ invitation April 28 to rehabilitate his injured Achilles’ tendon. He has been seeing Dr. Robert Cook, the Blazers’ team physician, twice a day for physical therapy.

THOMPSON SEES RED OVER BLAZER AID TO SABONIS
PORTLAND – U.S. Olympic basketball Coach John Thompson says the Portland Trail Blazers shouldn’t be helping injured Arvidas Sabonis, the Blazer draft choice and starting center of the Soviet Olympic team. SABONIS, BOWIE MAY BE IN SAME BLAZER BOAT
The other is Arvidas Sabonis of the Soviet Union. The prognosis for his recovery from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon is better, although he has less chance of wearing a Trail Blazer uniform in the near future than [Sam] Bowie. After surgery last summer in his native Lithuania, Sabonis came to the United States last month to consult with three orthopedic specialists – Steve Lombardo of the Los Angeles Lakers, Robert Cook of the Trail Blazers and Jack Hughston of the Hughston Sports Clinic in Columbus, Ga., to determine whether further surgery was required. She said that the Trail Blazers, who drafted Sabonis in the first round two years ago on the long-shot chance that the Soviet Sports Committee might allow him to play in the NBA after the 1988 Summer Olympics, want him to remain in Portland for the rehabilitation. She said that Sabonis’ personal doctor, Kestitus Vitkus, also recommended that to the Soviets.

Thompson sees red over Sabonis
The 7-3 [Arvidas Sabonis], the Trail Blazers’ 1986 first-round draft choice, arrived in Portland on April 28 to rehabilitate his injured Achilles tendon. He has been visiting Dr. Robert Cook, the Trail Blazers’ team physician, twice a day for physical therapy. At the team’s request, Sabonis’ visa was just extended for two months. “Realistically, I see Sabonis as being a fulfillment of Lenin’s prophecy: The capitalists are selling (the communists) the rope that they can hang us with,” [John Thompson] said. “I personally feel we’re being used.

SURGERY LOOSENS THE BONDS OF CEREBRAL PALSY BUT CRITICS ARGUE THAT FREEING FROZEN MUSCLES COULD DO HARM
Posterior rhizotomy is the first treatment for spasticity that appears to alleviate the underlying neuromuscular defect. Spastic patients often undergo orthopedic surgery to lengthen muscles, rearrange tendons and correct joints distorted by their chronically contracted muscles. But these operations represent a mechanical approach to the problem rather than one that addresses the disordered underlying physiology. Using a probe with an electrode on the end, the surgeon teases apart each of the five to 10 posterior nerve rootlets that emerge from the spinal cord on each side of each vertebra and stimulates each one in turn with electrical current. Watching the leg muscles and monitoring their response on a graph called a myelogram, doctors look for the rootlets involved in abnormal muscle contraction. Those are cut, but the rest are left intact. The part of the spine that was removed is sutured back in place. The operation and follow-up rehabilitation do not come cheap. In [Adam Hill]‘s case, the surgery and inpatient rehabilitation cost about $27,000, which will be covered by the family’s health maintenance organization. However, some advocates believe it may lessen the necessity for some of the orthopedic operations that spastic patients need to correct contractures, pretzeling of limbs and other derangements.

Chris Jenkins
Not only has [Bobby Knight] stressed academics, but he’s won three national championships at Indiana, one gold medal for the United States at the Olympic Games and another at the Pan American Games. Never mind that in the process he’s also been wanted in Puerto Rico for hitting a cop and thrown four-legged missiles in the general direction of referees. But at least Bobby knows all about women, eh? “I think that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it,” Knight said in a television interview aired nationally. (My only question was just how relaxed Knight might’ve been sharing a San Juan prison cell with some big, tattooed guy.) Incidentally, there was another story about John Thompson, a 6- foot-10 authority figure. As the ’88 Olympic coach, Thompson thinks it “just isn’t right” that the Trail Blazers are helping Soviet center Arvidas Sabonis rehabilitate an injured Achilles tendon. This, kiddies, is what’s known as “sportsmanship.”

HEALTHBEAT SPORTS DOCTOR Stretching prevents tendon injury
The Achilles tendon is the large tendon that attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone. This muscle and tendon provide the power for an athlete to stand on his or her toes and to push off to jump. This tendon is very strong. The usual way it is torn is when the foot is forced up and at the same time the muscles of the calf are tightening. This injury most often occurs during a basketball game coming down with a rebound or in a tennis match during an overhead smash. This year in our clinic, we even saw a man who tore his Achilles tendon rolling a ball in bocche, a sport I had thought would be injury-free. Occasionally a skier will rupture his tendon, which may have been aggravated by ski boot pressure. Achilles tendon tears usually occur in athletes over 30 years old. The blood supply that nourishes the tendon slows down in middle- age making the tendon weaker and more easily torn. The area of most common rupture is 2 to 4 inches above the heel, where the blood supply is poorest.

VAN CALCAR, OSU TRACK GOING OUT IN STYLE
Van Calcar’s performance might have brought back memories. The first sub-4-minute mile on the track was run by Hailu Eba on the day the track opened in 1974. Van Calcar, who became the fifth Beaver in history to crack the 4-minute barrier, is expected to make bigger headlines in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His clocking of 8:35.03 is best in the nation and he is favored to win the NCAA championship in the event June 3 in Eugene. The steeplechase might be considered an appropriate event for Van Calcar because it involves clearing obstacles. In recent years, his obstacles have been injuries. An inflamed Achilles tendon ended his 1986 track season and last year he underwent underwent knee surgery.

ARM WOES AGAIN FOR WILKINSON
Both the Mariners and Bill Wilkinson got a scare in the eighth inning. Wilkinson, who had arm surgery two years ago and has complained of a tired arm of late, left the game after his shoulder tightened up on a pitch to George Bell. “The shoulder has been bothering me,” Wilkinson said. “This time I got out in front and I tried to drop my arm to catch up. After I threw the pitch I could feel the tendon in there quiver. And I could not straighten my arm out.” Red Sox team physician doctor Arthur Pappas, a noted arm specialist, will examine Wilkinson’s arm today. If there is any problem with the left-hander, who has had one problem after another this year, Seattle may call up reliever Rod Scurry from Calgary.

Playing in pain is much too familiar for UCLA’s O’Meara
[Catherine O'Meara], a graduate of Estancia High, broke her left wrist in the spring before her freshman season at UCLA. Then last season, she was bothered by damaged tendons in the same wrist and put together a disappointing 14-14 record. For most of the season then, O’Meara has been used as a pinch hitter, filling in, ironically, for injured players. And that, according to O’Meara, is better than not playing at all. On Thursday in the NCAA Division I Team Championships, O’Meara, subbing in for Joni Urban, defeated Mary Graber of Trinity and helped No. 4 UCLA into the quarterfinals.

Berly Plans to Restructure Diplomats;New Coach to Make Changes Before Today’s Match With Rowdies
[Hugo Berly], who is from Chile and speaks very little English, has brought in forwards Jeff Gafney, formerly of the University of Virginia, and Philip Gyau, a former player at Howard, while deactivating defender Troy Regis and midfielder Omid Namazi. The Rowdies may be the perfect solution to the Diplomats’ problems. Having scored but two goals in five games, the Rowdies’ offense is virtually nonexistent. But Tampa Bay has NASL veteran Winston DuBose in goal and he has been a bulwark, giving up just two goals in the four games he has played. The Diplomats do have some minor injuries to key players. Defenders Duncan Reynard (strained knee), Keith Trehy (sore Achilles’ tendon), Paul Emordi (sprained ankle) and forward Abdulwahb Alkhaldi (sore foot) are limping a bit, but are expected to play. Midfielder Richard Burke (sore ankle) is out.

BASEBALL; Giants Perk Up Against Mets As Krukow Outduels Darling
”I thought that ball was going to be caught,” [Mike Krukow] said. ”[Lenny Dykstra] doesn’t mess up that ball. It needs some help. Every ball hit in the air here is a Broadway musical: it’s entertainment.” ”I have great respect for the Mets, and I don’t know why I have success against them,” Krukow said later. ”They can blow you out of the water. But I told [Roger Craig], ‘Close the bullpen door, even if I give up 30 runs today.’ ” Another setback for Rick Aguilera, who has been disabled for three and a half weeks with a sore right elbow: The elbow is still hurting, so he will stop throwing for perhaps another week. He will also consult doctors in San Diego and Los Angeles for a diagnosis of what is causing the problem. ”It’s obviously not right,” the 26-year-old pitcher said. ”So, we decided to shut down for a while. Day to day, it’s not getting better. When I pitch, I have a kind of dull ache. But immediately after I stop icing it, the elbow hurts a lot. Davey Johnson says to rest it maybe a week and get the everyday pain out before we start pitching again. It could be a little tear of the tendon. They don’t know.”

Olympic Basketball Trials Will Begin Wednesday
The Georgetown coach railed against agents for allegedly advising college players to skip the tryouts, and he criticized the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers for helping in the rehabilitation of Soviet center Arvidas Sabonis. Two other top prospects, Pervis Ellison of Louisville and Tim Perry of Temple, also were among the early dropouts. Ellison cited an injury, and Perry is skipping the trials to attend summer school even though he has completed his eligibility. [John Thompson] initially opened the trials for the NBA scouts. There has been no announced change, but Thompson since blasted the league for its role in helping Sabonis. The 7-foot-2 Soviet center has been in Portland since April 28 to rehabilitate his injured Achilles’ tendon.

SOX ACE SEATTLE CLEMENS FIRES THREE-HITTER, 3-0
Yet [Roger Clemens] was yielding even less. He’d had a couple of wobbly moments — consecutive four-pitch walks to [Ken Phelps] and another on a full count to Mike Kingery. That was the tendon talking — Clemens had felt it pop while stretching in the dugout after the first inning. But most of the time, he solved the Mariners with little difficulty. Clemens got [Jim Presley] to ground into a double play to end the fourth, then fanned Glenn Wilson and Rey Quinones to close out the fifth. After Kingery dumped a single into center to lead off the sixth, Wade Boggs turned the defensive play of the afternoon, charging in for [Harold Reynolds]‘ bunt and firing to Jody Reed at second to spark a double play. Now Clemens showed signs of wear. He was slow to cover first on Reynolds’ leadoff bunt and conceded a single. Then he walked Mickey Brantley on five pitches. That brought Sox manager John McNamara out of the dugout for a visit — but Clemens stayed in to close it out. A few moments later, the Mariners were clattering down their runway, beaten again. And Clemens, 2-3 at this point a year ago, had taken another step toward the Land of Twenty.

MR. X READY FOR A CRASH COURSE AT DEFENSIVE END
In desperate need of healthy bodies along the defensive line, the Patriots brought in [Edmund Nelson] for a look last week. When [Kenneth Sims] went down Sunday, they went to their ready list of available players and came up with Nelson, who has the versatility to play anywhere along the line. [Raymond Berry] did say that Nelson, er, Mr. X, would be given a crash course in the Patriot system today. “We expect him to be at practice by Wednesday,” said Berry. Team physician Bert Zarins repaired Sims’ tendon in an operation at Massachusetts General Hospital yesterday. According to Zarins, Sims will wear a short cast for 6-8 weeks and then begin rehabilitation.
