Seoul ’88 Foster’s Injury Puts Selecting Process in Focus Series: Seoul ’88
Soviet basketball Coach Alexander Gomelsky, whose team was one of the three European teams to earn an Olympic berth at a qualification tournament this week in Rotterdam, said he expects 7-foot 3-inch center Arvidas Sabonis to be with the team in Seoul. But he apparently hasn’t spoken with Sabonis, who is rehabilitating his injured Achilles’ tendon in Portland. “Have I said to anybody that I’m playing?” Sabonis said. “Have you heard anywhere that I’m playing? When I say that I’m ready to play, I’ll play in the Olympics, and then you can listen to Gomelsky.” Isn’t glasnost wonderful? Dr. Robert Cook, the Trail Blazers’ physician who is overseeing Sabonis’ rehabilitation, has advised against him playing in the Olympics. A three-member panel established by the U.S. Rowing Assn. is expected to decide today whether three rowers who walked out of a selection camp have a grievance. The rowers, Joe Bouscaren, Gregg Montesi and Fran Reininger, claim other rowers were guaranteed berths on the men’s quadruple scull team . . . Despite an 11-10 loss Saturday night at Pepperdine, the U.S. water polo team was impressive in its series against defending Olympic champion Yugoslavia. The United States won four of the six matches. The teams will meet again this summer in Yugoslavia and then open the Olympic tournament in a game against each other. U.S. Coach Bill Barnett says the Soviets should be favored in Seoul. Ramona Pagel, U.S. record holder in the women’s shotput, can’t understand why she isn’t on The Athletics Congress “Operation Seoul” list to receive $1,200 a month to train, whereas wealthier athletes, such as [Carl Lewis], [Edwin Moses] and Mary Slaney, are in the program. “That would pay my rent and feed me,” she told the Dallas Morning News. “Some of the ones getting it, it just buys them another set of luggage.” . . . The program cost TAC $600,000. So why didn’t more of the athletes in the program support TAC’s national championships last month in Tampa? “Because they are in other places running and making money, being paid to run in somebody else’s meet,” meet director Jimmy Carnes said. “That’s ridiculous.” . . . There was another demonstration last week in South Korea. This one involved 200 handicapped people, who were protesting against the Paralympics, a competition for disabled athletes to be held in Seoul, Oct. 15-24. They said the government should not be spending money to sponsor the competition when it does not provide sufficient facilities for disabled people in the country. . . . Attempting to make her second Olympic women’s basketball team, Cheryl Miller, formerly of USC, said: “I gave my (gold) medal to my dad in ’84, and my mom has been bugging me ever since. I have to win this one to give her and keep both of them happy.”

HEALTHBEAT SPORTS DOCTOR Achilles tendinitis needs time to heal
One of the most frustrating injuries for both athlete and physician is Achilles tendinitis. It is extremely frustrating to the athlete whose daily run has become an important part of his or her schedule. The pain is located just above the heel where the Achilles tendon attaches to the bone. Initially the pain is sporadic. As the tendon becomes more irritated, the athlete experiences pain whenever he attempts to run or even walk uphill, which stretches the tendon more than walking on level ground. Although the runners are not allowed to run, I insist they continue their stretching, especially to the Achilles tendon area. This is done by slowly leaning forward while leaving the heel on the ground. This gradual stretching of the Achilles tendon will break down any scar tissue in the area.

Laut Finally Putting His Career Back on Track 2 Years After Career-Threatening Injury, Santa Clara Graduate Takes Shot at 2nd Olympic Team
The injury, which took place two years ago, was the result of years of intense weight training. It severed the quadricep tendons in each leg and would have terminated many athletic careers, but not [Jim Laut]‘s. The 1984 Olympic bronze medalist in the shotput, Laut will compete in the U. S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Indianapolis on Friday. Then firmly established, Laut experimented with two shotput techniques, the glide and the spin, in 1980. The experiments were a result of the U. S.-led Olympic boycott. Though Laut won his fourth national title and was ranked seventh in the world in 1985, the corporate sponsorship and shoe contracts that peaked in 1984 began to dwindle and [Lauts] competitive fire began to flicker. After competing seriously for more than a decade, the shot had become a job for Laut. Then came the 1986 injury, which rekindled his desire for competition.

Victory in City 5K indicates Burrell has recovered from leg injury
Last fall, while training for the Philadelphia Marathon – an Olympic Trials qualifier – [Greg Burrell] ruptured a tendon. At the time, he was running about 100 miles a week. Burrell was sidelined for two months. “The times in the smaller races are slower than they were five or six years ago,” Burrell said. “If Marty Froelick and some of the other elite runners in town came to the smaller races, they would be faster.” Changed priorities are the chief reasons for the slower times, says Burrell, a veteran of the Springs racing scene since the mid-1970s.

Life’s a gamble? Not all the time
She will take the first steps when the U.S. Olympic Trials begin tomorrow at the Indiana University Track and Field Stadium. “I’m healthier than I’ve been in years,” said [Mary Decker Slaney], who will run in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. “I’ve been doing harder training. I’ve been doing extensive track workouts . . . longer runs. And there hasn’t been any muscle soreness. The Achilles’ tendon has taken a full year to become 100 percent. Over the past month, it’s felt a lot stronger and not as sensitive.” Slaney missed the 1976 Trials because of injury. The United States did not compete in the 1980 Games because of the American boycott. In the 1984 Olympics, she and Zola Budd collided and Decker’s chance for a medal were dashed. She was unbeaten in 14 races in 1985 and took a maternity leave in 1986. Injuries sidelined her for the 1987 outdoor and 1988 indoor seasons.

Hot Gwynn still isn’t feeling right
Healthy or not, the Padres need [Tony Gwynn] contributing if they hope to play .500 ball this season. Primarily because of the surgery this past spring to correct a damaged tendon in that finger and the ensuing injury to the thumb, Gwynn struggled more than the Padres for much of the first half. His balance at the plate was off and his usual high confidence level was low. That’s what happened in the ninth inning last night. Roberto Alomar singled to open the inning, placing Gwynn in a sacrifice situation. With the bunt sign flashed from the bench, Gwynn laid down a dandy. Not too long ago, Gwynn found himself in a similar position. All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t seem to put his batting stance back together again. The theory during the first half was that Gwynn had returned too quickly from the surgery. And so, he did not have the strength in his hand to properly swing a bat.

Rough Riders face tough road ahead
Quarterback Art Schlichter was introduced before the game as ”King Arthur,” but Saskatchewan afforded him no royal welcome to the Canadian Football League. In his league debut, Schlichter was dumped on his crown seven times and repeatedly frustrated by the Roughrider defence. The Riders, meanwhile, will be missing linebackers Anthony Woodson and Chris Rick. Woodson was operated on Monday for a torn achilles tendon and will be lost for the year. Rick injured his knee and will miss special teams duty for a couple of weeks. Import Ken Braden comes off the practice roster to replace Woodson. Slotback Rick Wolkensperg and linebacker Rob Pavan remain on the club’s reserve list. Pavan’s ankle sprain is slightly worse than first believed and Wolkensperg’s recurring knee problem struck again in Monday’s practice.

ADVICE DR. PAUL DONOHUE Injury can leave lingering pain
The name for the thumb problem is De Quervain’s. And it involves two tendons at its base, a little below the knuckle. Somehow the tendon passage (tunnel) has narrowed. The tendons become compressed and sometimes stick and lock in position. It’s sometimes painful. The sequence of events has three stages. First, pain develops around the joint, the overlying skin becoming tense and red as the blood vessels dilate. Next, the vessels constrict, leading to a pallor and coldness. The lingering pain, the third stage, reflects loss of blood circulation to the affected area. The skin in that area becomes thin and shrivels (the dystrophy).

Grid hopes are riding on rookies
It didn’t help matters at all when five-year veteran linebacker Anthony Woodson left the game with a torn achilles tendon and his replacement, rookie Chris Rick, was helped off the field with a knee injury that will require surgery. Rick will be replaced by (what else?) another freshman – Southwest Missouri product Ken Braden. Although [Fred Glick] has to be concerned about the number of rookies on his defence, another problem area is at nose tackle. Last week, neither four-year veteran Michel Bourgeau nor sophomore Robert Weir were effective in shutting down Saskatchewan running back Milson Jones, who rambled for 67 yards on only 10 carries. The offence alongside [Gilbert Renfroe] will have a new look as rookie wide receiver Pernell Moore will get into his first game, replacing the injured Jeff Boyd. Moore, from Central State University in Ohio, will start at the right wide receiver position with fellow rookie James Noble moving into the right slot.

Kaufman Gets Clearance, New Terms; Uncertainty Over Manley Casts Shadow on Defense
Linebacker Mel Kaufman is officially a Washington Redskin again, his right shoulder muscle as bulky as ever. This winter, a pinched nerve problem caused atrophy in his upper arm area, but Kaufman showed little apathy in the weight room and convinced Redskins doctors to let him suit up. Team physician Charles Jackson gave him medical clearance after a recent meeting and the final snag today was the terms of Kaufman’s contract, which the Redskins wanted to adjust, sources said. Kaufman, who was entering his option year, was due to earn $310,000 this season and still will, assuming he plays an unspecified number of games. But if he has a recurrence of his shoulder problems and goes on injured reserve, the Redskins won’t be responsible for the full contract. Kaufman is in enviable shape, too, according to Redskins strength coach Dan Riley. According to Kaufman’s agent George Campbell, the Redskins doctors thought there was little chance of Kaufman returning this season, exactly what they thought when Kaufman ruptured his Achilles’ tendon in 1986.

How athletes can cope with aging
Many athletes feel a conflict between an aging body and their memories of a body at its best. Athletes – as well as others who exercise – are motivated by ego and a sense of pride in their performances. Fatigue or boredom with training, with workouts and even with competition can decrease that drive, which in turn may lead to depression. In most cases, the first signs of aging are overuse syndromes such as chronic tendonitis, cartilage fragments in joints, worn cartilage, such as chondromalacia of the knee, and frayed Achilles’ tendons. These effects of age – simple wear and tear on the body – are reversible. In other words, if you stop or vary the activity, a healing process begins.

Man who risked life to aid injured driver is ‘reluctant’ hero
Last night, [John Cieslowski] gave a detailed and gripping account of the hectic 10-minute scene following the accident and how he stopped [Paul De Valadares]‘ bleeding. With belt in hand, Cieslowski ducked under the wreckage. Diesel fuel spilled into his hair and over his clothes. He tightly tied the belt around the leg with the raw tendons and bones sticking out. “While I was doing this (De Valadares) was yelling ‘My leg’s on fire, my leg’s on fire’. I said, ‘No, no, you’ve just got a bit of a cut and I’m trying to stop the bleeding’,” Cieslowski said, adding that the driver didn’t know his foot was cut off.

Clinics aim to put sore feet on road to sole survival
Many of these conditions are acquired, but a large number are also hereditary, says Neil Naftolin, a Toronto podiatrist and president of the Ontario Podiatry Association. Naftolin was recently appointed to Dr. Scholl’s Foot Health Advisory Board, an organization that aims to educate the public and health professionals on the proper care and treatment of foot-related ailments. Bunions, which occur even in children, arch pain, back pain, sore knees and shins can be the result of inherited foot imbalances. Fashion shoes are one of the biggest causes of foot problems, he says. But high heels don’t necessarily cause bunions or hammer toes, although they can push back the arch and put increasing pressure on the ball of the foot, causing toes to bend and the Achilles tendon to shorten. Varying your shoes from day to day can help prevent problems says Naftolin. Common sense is the most important thing, he advises. “Don’t wear your high-heeled shoes to go to Wonderland. Buy your shoes in mid to late afternoon when the feet are slightly swollen, to give your feet room to expand.” Walking shoes says Naftolin, should have good support – deck shoes and flip flops are not good for walking. “If you still develop arch or heel pain,” says Naftolin, “you will often need an orthotic.”

Don’t do too much too soon Let your body adjust to weight training
Answer: Your entry into weight training undoubtedly will be the most exciting and rewarding part of your workouts. But several things should be considered when you start your training. From your walking and bicycling you realize how important oxygen is during workouts. The same is true in weight training. Most books fail to mention that as you finish a lift, you should have started exhaling so that it is possible to take in sufficient oxygen for the next lift. Another important step for anyone beginning weight training is to use a weight that you are comfortable with, and for the first month or so to increase the repetitions, not the weight. This will give the tendons and cartilage an opportunity to strengthen sufficiently to avoid injuries in these areas. Start with eight reps per set, and with the same weight work the reps up to 20. Then increase the weight slightly, go back to eight reps and work back up to 20. They do. The following are some recommendations from dermatologists and radiation experts for lessening the chances of acquiring these diseases: 1. Be informed and aware that to get a tan, the skin must be damaged (it is skin damage that causes the tan). 2. Avoid peak-hour exposure (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). 3. Apply sunscreen generously 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun. 4. Wear sunglasses that absorb the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. 5. Wear protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat. 6. Keep track of newly developed or existing moles.

Patience May Finally Pay Off for 49ers’ Wilson
[Mike Wilson] had two preseason injuries – a strained hamstring and sore left Achilles’ tendon – and [Bill Walsh] told reporters he was “very disappointed” after Wilson dropped a pass during the third exhibition game. Meanwhile, [Wes Chandler]‘s performance steadily improved, and he was awarded the starting job. Wilson didn’t let that affect him on the practice field. “He came out every day, and he was the same guy, even though Wes Chandler was the starter,” [Jerry Rice] said. “I guess Mike felt if he gets the opportunity to show what he can do, he’ll get the starting job back.” After Chandler retired Friday, Wilson’s six receptions as a starter helped negate Detroit’s 46 defense, which put so much pressure on quarterback Joe Montana that he often audibled to quick passes. Since Rice was usually double-covered, Wilson became the primary target, and his most important contribution was a 20-yard, third-down catch that helped the 49ers run out the clock.
