Knicks’ Robinson Is Finding His Role

”Truck has been getting the shots and he has been in the flow of the game,” said Eddie Donovan, the Knicks’ director of player personnel. ”It’s amazing that when you get the shots, how much better you also rebound and play defense.” Cites Hand Injury ”It’s simple,” said [Bill Cartwright], who averaged 20 plus points in his first two seasons. ”I’m just getting the ball.” It will be interesting to see what happens to [Robinson] and Cartwright if King is ready to play tomorrow night when the Knicks open the second half of their season against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden. The game will be the first of three against teams whose records are worse than the Knicks. New York plays at Chicago Friday and returnshome to meet the San Diego Clippers the following night. Sherod Sparks Victory ”We want to deal,” [Dave DeBusschere] said. ”but the other teams have cold feet.”

TWO TIED WITH 65′s IN THE DORAL OPEN

[Ed Fiori], whose odd way of holding a golf club has earned him the nickname ”The Grip,” carded seven birdies, five on the front side, and no bogeys. [Mike Gove] also shot seven birdies, but he had to scramble to save par four times. Sidelined by Hand Injury ”I guess,” Gove mused, ”they must have seen 2-irons three inches from the cup all day long.” [Lanny Wadkins] Finds Water Wadkins, whose 10 victories include the Professional Golfers’ Association championship, the Tournament Players Championship, the Tournament of Champions and the World Series of Golf, shot eight birdies, but they were partly offset by two bogeys. The first was at the par-5 10th, where he drove into the water. ”I had a mental lapse,” Wadkins said. The other bogey came at the par-3 13th, where he dropped his tee shot into a greenside bunker, blasted out to four feet, then missed the putt.

WALKER – I WANT TO GET OUT’; UNSIGNED RED SOX FARMHAND SEEKS TRADE TO ANOTHER MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM

[WALKER] figures that by not speaking up he would automatically doom himself to another year at Pawtucket. Walker knows there are at least five players ahead of him in the system, and he is no longer considered an outfield prospect. As a utility infielder, Walker feels it is only a matter of time before he gets caught up in the numbers game again. He switched to the outfield and was expected to win a utility job after playing the position in winter ball. But a freak hand injury held Walker back and opened the door for Reid Nichols to move ahead of him. Walker opened the season in the Pawtucket outfield, but continued to struggle. And to make his situation worse, the second base job was given to Marty Barrett. Manager Joe Morgan kept Walker in the lineup, however, for his bat and popularity with Pawtucket fans. When Carney Lansford was injured and the Red Sox wanted a utility player, the call went to Ed Jurak, who is now the favorite for one of the utility infield spots this year.

BASEBALL / BY PETER GAMMONS; WHITE SOX OWN BEST GUNS IN WEST

PHENOMS – Two scouts in Arizona said the same thing this week: “The best- looking young player in Arizona is Kevin McReynolds.” The Padres’ slugging outfielder out of Arkansas has torn up the Cactus League, and while he may not open the season in San Diego, he will be there soon. McReynolds is no surprise; Wil Culmer is a surprise. The winner of the [Jim Rice] Lookalike Contest, acquired by the Indians in the September John Denny deal, has also hit like crazy and may stick on that deal desperate for power. The 24-year-old Bahaman OF-DH was brought to Winter Haven by the Boston organization for spring training in 1978, but sent back . . . The Indians are raving about LHP Neal Heaton, and have given him a spot in their starting rotation with the healthy Bert Blyleven, Len Barker, Rick Sutcliffe and Lary Sorensen . . . The most impressive rookie pitcher in Southern Florida has been the Braves’ Craig McMurtry, who with all Atlanta’s injuries becomes a key factor in any hopes of repeating in the NL West. “He’s got almost as good a sinker as Bob Stanley, and he may throw even harder than Stanley,” says Toronto scout Al LaMacchia . . . But across Alligator Alley in Ft. Myers, the Royals simply have to decide whether to put LHP Danny Jackson in the rotation in April or June. “His fastball has as good movement on it as anyone since Steve Barber,” says [Ken Harrelson]‘s partner, Don Drysdale . . . No rookie pitcher in the upper half of Florida has looked better than the Red Sox’ Mike Brown . . . One of the most impressive rookie hitters is Yankee 1B-OF Don Mattingley, who has a quick bat and is going to hit for power whenever he gets the chance to play. Ditto Montreal OF-1B Mike Stenhouse of the Cranston Stenhouses. But ballyhooed teammate Roy Johnson may be the biggest disappointment, unless you like outfielders who don’t drive the ball and look as fat as Dave Parker at age 23 . . . The Cubs are concerned that their ballyhooed rookie CF Mel Hall has such problems with inflammation under both kneecaps that he’s going to have to play left field and eventually need surgery. As if the Cubs need any problems. Bill Buckner has a hand injury and will miss the rest of spring training. And their starting pitching has been pitiable. Old friend Chuck Rainey has a 27 ERA after three appearances.

CELTICS GET GUARD UP: AINGE, HENDERSON

Bill Fitch isn’t laughing. He’s dead serious, as usual. [Danny Ainge] and [Gerald Henderson] have played well starting the last two games. Henderson played 31 and 42 minutes against Atlanta and New York, while Ainge averaged 39.5 minutes in the two games. “In my opinion, it’s been on the table before and it hasn’t hurt us,” Fitch says. “There’s been a lot of times that Henderson and Ainge have been a vital combination. They give us great full-court pressure. In fact, it would be dynamite if we had other people ready for spot duty, even if only for 5 minutes. Then we wouldn’t have the fatigue factor. I don’t think we can count on Danny and Gerald playing 40 minutes back to back the way they did, but I was really tickled with our guard play in those two games.” Ainge-Henderson is a combination Fitch was forced to use after [Quinn Buckner] turned his right ankle in Washington Saturday. Buckner, who may be available for spot duty against the Bullets tonight, hasn’t played since. Meanwhile, Tiny Archibald still is bothered by that mysterious left-hand injury, and it begins to look as though the Celtics will have to make do in the playoffs without Tiny again this year.

    ROYALS DUMP SOX

This fourth Red Sox loss in six games wasn’t the ballpark alone. While Bruce Hurst pitched all right, he didn’t pitched that well, either, and when it came to the crunch, he got knocked out in a hail of eight hits around his last seven outs that brought the six-game ERA of the Boston starters to a sterling 6.99. Dennis Leonard, the Royals’ ace coming off a severe hand injury, pitched far better, with two innings of help from Dan Quisenberry. And, speaking of the bullpen, what may concern the Red Sox brass most about this customary 6-2 loss to the Royals may have been yet another night of seeing Mark Clear’s fastball hit and hit hard. Actually, Leonard himself washurt by the turf in the first, when Dwight Evans hit a sharp grounder through the middle, past the backhand of Frank White and on through the right center field gap to the fence for a triple and an eventual run. Rich Gedman (8 for 20) then hit a rocket through the wind in the fourth for his first homer since last June 5, and it was 2-0. Gedman, incidentally, had another outstanding night, throwing Washington out stealing at third and hitting three balls hard. However, it was obvious Leonard had it, especially in the third when he struck out Evans with a fastball, [Jim Rice] with a curveball and Tony Armas with a slider. They may knock in 300 runs; they’ll also strike out 320-350 times, so be prepared. The luck Leonard needed, he got when Evans hit a pea to George Brett for a 5-4-3 double play with two on, none out and the score 2-1 in the fifth. The defense he needed he got from Amos Otis cutting off Gedman’s liner to left center in the seventh at 4-2, followed by a nice play in the hole on Glenn Hoffman’s grounder by Washington that forced Gedman.

    SCOUTING; A Safer Glove

”We have given the thumbless glove a fair test,” said Jack Prenderville, the chairman of the commission. ”Now we feel in a good position morally: We have reduced eye and hand injuries. And we have listened to complaints from boxers and responded with modifications of the glove. Now we have the best glove possible.” Prenderville, buoyed by the study, believes the commission will throw out thumbed gloves completely.

    TONIGHT Canadiens v Leafs

Montreal update – Though they may be shadows of their former selves, this year’s Canadiens still are a formidable team. They scored 17 goals in the first two stops on a three-game, four-day road trip. The Mario Tremblay-Matts Naslund-Pierre Mondou combination has been their best, but veteran superstar Guy Lafleur has been flying, scoring six goals in his first six games. On the other hand, injuries and suspensions have aggravated the team’s shortcomings on defence.

    Fractured hand sidelines Walton

[Bill Walton] snapped the third metacarpal bone at the six-minute mark of the first period during last night’s 120-99 Clipper loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at the Forum. Skying high for a possible tip-in above the San Diego basket, Walton missed the basketball and instead struck his hand on the backboard. The news of Walton’s hand injury further lowered the mood of an already dejected Clipper brain trust. Owner Donald T. Sterling and president Alan Rothenberg had fled the building before the game even ended, leaving legal counsel Arn Tellem to wait for still another Walton injury verdict. When Walton returned to action last fall, it was on a one-game-a- week basis. In all, Walton played 33 games during a season that ended when bone spurs were removed from his right ankle on March 25. Walton also suffered a fractured cheekbone, among a host of other less serious injuries, during the course of his comeback season.

DALLAS AT END OF LINE; TAKE RAMS, OR LOSE JOBS

What the Cowboys must do to survive this afternoon at Texas Stadium is obvious – corral [Eric Dickerson], the NFL’s leading rusher. In essence, Dickerson, who gained 1808 yards and scored 20 touchdowns, is the only offense the Rams have because quarterback Vince Ferragamo is still suffering with a hand injury he sustained against the Patriots three weeks ago. Against the Saints, for example, Ferragamo did not complete a pass in the second half until the final scoring drive. Because of that, the Rams’ offense accounted for just three of their 26 points. In the past three weeks, in fact, Los Angeles has scored just 19 points as one defense after another slanted its line to jam Dickerson’s running lanes.

2 men fight, bash cars on Rt. 95 exit

The assailant kept coming, swinging the pipe at [James Wilson]‘s head, he said. But Wilson, who was on the bumpy “chatter strip” at the exit, fell down, the pipe missing him and his gun going off. The shot apparently hit nothing. Torres was treated for a hand injury at Rhode Island Hospital. Cecily Torres, 8-month-old child of Mercedes Torres, both passengers in Torres’ car, was hit by flying glass and was treated at the hospital.

Clippers’ big front line grounds Hawks

With a towering starting lineup of Bill Walton and Terry Cummings at forward and James Donaldson at center, the Clippers last night defeated the Atlanta Hawks 113-101 at the Sports Arena. It took solid efforts from guards Ricky Pierce, Craig Hodges and reserve forward Jerome Whitehead to keep the Hawks — who lost starting forward Dan Roundfield to a hand injury Thursday night — from overcoming the Clippers late in the game. When Charlie Criss and Mike Glenn hit consecutive baseline jumpers to open the final period and pull Atlanta within a basket, Whitehead and Hodges responded with crucial plays. Whitehead scored a rebound basket and converted a free throw, and Hodges tossed in a bomb from the corner and sliced between two defenders for a breakaway layup.

    `Excessive’ TD display stings Wheeler

“He was happy,” said [Don Coryell]. “It’s not like five guys in a circle standing around counting one-two-three and saying, `Let’s do it.’” ^ ^ ^ The Chargers may have beaten the 49ers Saturday, but there is some question as to who beat up whom. Check out the Charger injury list: running back Chuck Muncie (knee sprain), will likely miss Thursday’s Ram game; running back Earnest Jackson (fracture of the orbit of the eye), out indefinitely; wide receiver Bobby Duckworth (foot contusion), probably out for Thursday’s game; running back [Buford McGee] (hip pointer), will play Thursday; linebacker Vince Osby (neck sprain), not serious; linebacker Ray Preston (thigh contusion), may miss Ram game; running back Jewerl Thomas (neck sprain) and [Tom Wheeler] (foot sprain), will be examined today to determine extent of injuries. And that’s not to mention tight end Kellen Winslow, who missed Saturday’s game with a knee injury, but who is expected back in practice this week, and tight end Pete Holohan, recovering from a separated shoulder, who will return to practice — but not contact drills — this week. Another note: linebacker Derrie Nelson, out with a hand injury, has come down with an infection in his back, Coryell said.
