NOTUS, Idaho (UPI) – Leaders of Oregon’s Rajneeshpuram say they will not alter travel arrangements for homeless people coming to the religious community, despite a fatal accident involving a busload of recruits. “I was headed to a new life, and I’m still going,” said Calvin Lamont Shannon, 18, Columbus, Ohio, who suffered a minor hand injury in the accident, which occurred near the farming town of Notus, 20 miles west of Boise. A chartered Trailways bus was carrying dozens of homeless men to the community led by the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh when it collided head on with a car, injuring nearly three dozen passengers and killing the car’s driver, David Allen Larson, 20, of Caldwell, Idaho.

COLES: FOR DARNELL, THE BEEF WAS A CHEESEBURGER

For this bungled bun might have helped cost Del Crandall his job as Seattle Mariner manager. This was not just any Big Mac, but the sandwich Crandall tore from the hands of rookie Darnell Coles and stuffed in the trash before a game in May, and before the eyes of the entire team. Stretching a point, the all-beef-patty incident might belong to the for-want-of-a-nail school. For want of some discipline, Coles was lost. For want of Coles, third base was lost. For want of a third baseman, the season was lost. Seattle did play all but a few late-season weeks without an effective third baseman. Coles was supposed to be Seattle’s third baseman, off a very good month of September in 1983. Coles first suffered from a hand injury in spring training, then from a slump when he got to the majors, then from an estrangement with Crandall.

PERSONAL FINANCE; DISABILITY: THE FORGOTTEN INSURANCE

Although this insurance protection has been offered for a number of years, its use has been limited, according to Frederick R. Brown, vice president of Union Mutual Life Insurance Company of Portland, Me., because ”people say, ‘Yeah, it’s not going to happen to me.’ ” ”The insurance companies don’t expect you to sell pencils on the street,” one agent said, ”but if you can’t practice brain surgery any more because of a hand injury, that doesn’t mean you can collect in full when you could do other medical work.” While life insurance is clear cut – you’re either dead or you’re not – with disability coverage, ”there must often be an evaluation of benefits on a case-by-case basis,” Mr. [Ron Johnson] of Bankers Life said. He added that ”there is a strong emphasis on rehabilitation,” with insurers encouraging and financing those who seek therapy to overcome their disabilities and return to the labor force.

Pagel can’t understand it : Kush wants Herrmann at QB

Nor do others. [Mike Pagel], who was recruited by [Frank Kush] in college, drafted by Kush in 1982 and praised by Kush after a stunning 17-16 defeat of Pittsburgh two weeks ago, today is benched by Kush. So what if [Mark Herrmann] was named the starter? Pagel had overcome greater odds. And he would overcome Herrmann, too, after the latter broke the thumb on his passing hand during preseason. For Pagel, the most difficult of his three NFL seasons was to begin: o By the seventh week, Pagel was not only out of favor, he was out of a job. Herrmann, who had returned from his hand injury, was activated on Oct. 20 and started one day later against the Steelers. After the Colts fell behind 16-0, Herrmann exited and Pagel came to the rescue to hit 13 of 17 for 178 yards — including a game- winning touchdown with 34 seconds left.

    Hunter leads Canadiens, 3-1

Boston goalie Pete Peeters had 23 saves before suffering an apparent hand injury when he stopped a shot by Larry Robinson with 1:07 remaining. He was replaced by rookie Don Sylvestri, recalled yesterday to replace injured Doug Keans. The Flyers tied it when [Tim Kerr] took a centering pass from Ilkka Sinisalo and slipped a backhand shot past goalie Dan Bouchard. It was Kerr’s 24th goal of the season.

MATT YOUNG SIGNS 1-YEAR PACT WITH MARINERS

At this point last year, Matt Young and the Mariners were about to start contract talks that were to become a replay of the Hundred Years’ War. Young wound up signing for $95,000, plus incentives, and wound up also with a troubled season that included back and hand injuries and a 6-8 record and a 5.72 ERA. What a difference a year, and a change of agents, makes. Young agreed yesterday to a one-year contract smoothly worked out between Mariner President Chuck Armstrong and agent Ron Shapiro of Baltimore, who also represents pitcher Jim Beattie.

In pursuit of fitness, one jogs around the pitfalls

The running shoe should have a firm heel counter with a good arch support. Depending on your natural arch, you may be more comfortable in a shoe with a higher or flatter, firmer or more resilient arch. In general, shoes with removable innersoles are preferred, as they allow replacement when they are worn, and arch pads can be placed under the innersole to customize the shoe. You should be able to lace the shoe tight enough so that it grabs you at the midfoot, preventing the foot from pistoning in the shoe which will cause friction and blisters. Actual broken bones around the shoulder in recreational athletes are relatively uncommon. On the other hand, injuries of the muscles and soft tissues that support the shoulder are very common. The shoulder bones include the clavicle or collarbone, which runs from the sternum to a portion of the shoulder blade (scapula) which then forms the cup of glenoid that cradles the ball part of the joint or humeral head. This is covered on the outer side of the shoulder by the large deltoid muscle. Just as important are the smaller muscles underneath the deltoid that help to seat the humeral head in the glenoid. These are the rotator cuff muscles. A fall on the shoulder or chronic strain can partially tear these muscles. With a fall, the junction between the clavicle and the shoulder blade may be torn. This is called a shoulder separation. There will be pain on the top of the shoulder and a bump where the clavicle or collarbone has torn away from the shoulder blade. If a tear is bad enough, usually a special type of strapping and occasionally surgery are necessary to hold the clavicle in place until it heals. Any disruption of the tissues around the shoulder joint may interfere with the smooth rhythmical motion of the joint and that will decrease peak performance in throwing or in serving a tennis ball.

    Martinez slowed by hand injury

Pain in his left hand from a previously undisclosed injury forced Carmelo Martinez to head for the trainers’ room after a few tentative swings in the batting cage yesterday during the Padres’ first full-squad workout. The 24-year-old left fielder said the problem began late last season and worsened while he was playing winter ball in his native Puerto Rico. He said X-rays of the base of the hand revealed what Puerto Rican doctors called a “crack” in a bone. Padres batting coach Deacon Jones tried to get the right-handed- hitting Martinez to hit outside pitches to the opposite field last year. Yesterday, Jones was pleased to learn that his pupil had homered, tripled and doubled to right-center in the Caribbean Series. Martinez committed eight errors, compared to four for center fielder Kevin McReynolds and four for right fielder Tony Gwynn. Base runners sometimes challenged Martinez’s arm, but he threw out 15 of them, second to Cardinals left fielder Lonnie Smith (18) in the NL.

BC FACES TEXAS TECH; NU UP AGAINST ILLINOIS; – HUSKIES LOOK FOR THE ANSWERS

[Jim Calhoun] knows what to expect. Illinois’ basic offense employs three triangles, hoping that a point down low will be occupied by 6- foot-10, 230- pound center Scott Meents (recovering from a hand injury), 6-9, 235-pound Efrem Winters or 6-8, 215-pound sophomore Ken Norman. That NU’s only muscle resides in the uniform of 6-8, 220- pound freshman center Kevin McDuffie (“He’s really 6-7 and he would be a small rebounding forward in the Big 10,” said Calhoun), combined with the fact that no Illini is averaging more than 12 points per game, makes the situation murkier. Should we be surprised to see the Huskies sag inside? “We have to give up something,” Calhoun said. “It wouldn’t shock me if Bruce Douglas (the Illini point guard) scored 20. And that would be OK – if we’ve got to allow them something, we’ll allow him 18-footers.”

    HOLMES’ PLAN ON THE BUTTON

Larry Holmes, being of sound mind and sufficient bank balance, is blessed with an opportunity that has become rare to sports, especially boxing. He can walk away from it all now, and in a straight line. His business is nobody else’s business, but one can only hope he seizes the chance, never to look back. But by retiring when he’s on top instead of on the canvas or on welfare, Larry Holmes can depart with a sweet taste still in his mouthpiece. Automatically, that would elevate him to the most elite group of superstars from any game. We would remember Holmes not only as a superior craftsman, but as a champion who was able to say goodbye rather than succumb to the temptation to hang around. Futch theorizes that Holmes accomplished two immediate goals Friday night. He proved that his skills were not as eroded as they appeared last November, when a hand injury complicated by a year’s layoff rendered Holmes a gawky figure in his strained triumph over James “Bonecrusher” Smith, another well-intentioned fellow who had only the proverbial puncher’s chance of upsetting an undefeated artist such as Holmes.

Rams Like Looks of a Rookie, 34

“I’m very impressed with him,” Coach John Robinson said after [Dieter Brock] had thrown for about 15 minutes in a tryout at Rams Park Monday. Brock’s showing clouds the future of Vince Ferragamo with the Rams. If the Rams sign Brock, who just turned 34, they probably will try to trade Ferragamo, who is almost 31 and missed most of last season with hand injuries. Robinson had Brock throw several different types of passes. Brock, who is listed at 6 feet and 190 pounds, seemed to throw as far as 70 yards with a mere flick of his arm.

Rams to Seek Another Team For Ferragamo

Dieter Brock, a free agent from the Canadian Football League, has signed a four-year contract, reportedly worth $2.1 million, with the National Football League team. At a press conference called Tuesday to announce Brock’s signing, Coach John Robinson didn’t sidestep questions about Ferragamo’s future with the Rams. Ferragamo, 30, signed a four-year contract extension with the Rams last season. He opened the year as the club’s starting quarterback but was sidelined with a hand injury in the third game and didn’t play again.

Davis’ hot bat stirs up problem as Padres look to final cuts

Jerry Davis has given it his best shot and this time he hopes it may be good enough. With the Padres virtually certain to place Carmelo Martinez on the disabled list by early next week, Davis may make the 25-man roster when the first pitch is tossed out on opening day. [Ron Roenicke] is still very much in the running. But the hand injury to Martinez has clouded the situation. According to general manager Jack McKeon, the club almost certainly will place Martinez on the 15- day disabled list beginning April 1. That means Martinez would not be eligible to play until the Padres’ home opener against the Giants on April 15. That also means that the Padres may have room for two more outfielders. With essentially one roster spot still vacant, that decision may leave the outfield situation wide open for both Davis and Roenicke should [Williams] decide to part with utility shortstop Mario Ramirez. In the absence of Martinez’s right-handed bat, Williams could sub the righty swinging Davis. He already has a left-handed hitter in [Al Bumbry]. And though Roenicke and [Bobby Brown] switch hit, Brown is considered a liability from the right side where he is batting just .125 this spring.

Spring Training / Padres Title Game Makes Stoddard Nostalgic

The Padres are partly responsible, for it was them who ordered [Tim Stoddard] to end his basketball career. In his early days, just after he graduated from N.C. State and signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles, Stoddard would play winter league basketball, keeping in shape this way. It was his way of jogging, his way of working out, his way of keeping his elbow sharp. in January, he signed with the Padres for two years, both years being guaranteed. The Padres, wanting to guarantee that Stoddard stay healthy, ordered that he play no organized basketball in the off-season. Outfielder Carmelo Martinez, on the disabled list because of a hand injury, is expected to begin hitting in the next few days. And when he is able to come back, the Padres will have to release a player, a decision that probably depends how outfielder Jerry Davis does. If Davis plays well (he’ll platoon in left field with Al Bumbry), it’s likely that infielder Mario Ramirez will be sent down. If Davis doesn’t perform, though, it might be him. . . . Second baseman Alan Wiggins, who strained right knee ligaments last Saturday, is improving daily and may just be ready on opening day, April 9 in San Francisco. . . . The Padres’ exhibition record is 10-12. They play their last exhibition game in Yuma today against the Chicago Cubs.
