Martinez Enjoys His Opening Day His Two Homers Give Padres 8-3 Victory Before 54,490

This was a big deal, only because [Carmelo Martinez] made a big deal out of it. In his first game back from a hand injury, in his first game of 1985, Martinez hit two real home runs, including a grand slam in the seventh inning. And the Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants, 8-3, in front of its largest regular-season crowd in San Diego history. Martinez’s home run went to left, and only showed that he was truly healthy. [Alan Wiggins] apparently isn’t as healthy as Martinez, because there was some doubt as to whether he’d play on his injured knee Monday. He’d been cleared by two doctors, and [Dick Williams] put him in the lineup. But Williams said he wanted to wait for Dr. Cliff Colwell’s final opinion since Colwell is the team’s main orthopedic surgeon. Colwell gave approval, and Wiggins was in. In the ninth inning, [Steve Garvey] dropped a lazy pop up in foul territory, ending the longest consecutive-game errorless streak for a first baseman at 193 games. He did not pout at all. He went back to his position and played on. “It was on the dead run,” he said. “Those are the toughest. I was fortunate to go that long. All good things come to an end.” . . . Carmelo Martinez’s grand slam came off Giant reliever Greg Minton, who made his first appearance of the season Monday. Earlier, Minton had developed elbow problems. . . . Giant starting pitchers coming into this game had a combined ERA of 0.79. On Monday, all the Padre runs were earned.

They Aren’t Run-of-the-Mill Sockers’ Playoff Fortunes Rest With Goalkeepers Jim Gorsek and Zoltan Toth

[Jim Gorsek] said he took possession of the ball at one end of the field and worked to the other end by avoiding the bigger guys with his quickness. Then when Gorsek got close to the goal, he passed the ball to a teammate who scored on a head shot. Gorsek received his biggest break with the indoor Sockers in January, 1984, when regular goalkeeper Alan Mayer suffered a hand injury. Gorsek played the remainder of the year, and he was 5-0 with a 2.60 goals-against average in the playoffs as the Sockers won their third consecutive indoor championship. Unlike Gorsek, [Zoltan Toth] has been involved in soccer since his childhood days in Budapest, Hungary.

Harper Surprises Thurmond, Padres as Braves Win, 4-2

It’s assumed, obviously, that [Mark Thurmond] had let up, expecting that [Terry Harper], an easy-going guy, was an easy out. But this apparently was not the case because everyone involved says Thurmond threw a good pitch to Harper, a pitch that was down around his shins. Even without [Steve Garvey], the Padres had chance to score on [Rick Mahler], one chance coming in the sixth after [Tony Gwynn]‘s triple. Garvey’s grounder had scored Gwynn, and Mahler proceeded to walk [Terry Kennedy] and [Graig Nettles]. Braves third baseman Bob Horner missed Tuesday’s game with a hamstring injury. He had arrived at the stadium five hours early on Monday, received treatment and played, going 0 for 3 at the plate. But he sat out Tuesday, fearful of aggravating the injury and perhaps himself, since he’s hitting .171. . . . Padre left fielder [Carmelo Martinez] wore an ace bandage on his right arm during Tuesday’s game, only to keep the arm warm. After missing time with his hand injury, he had come back throwing much too hard, creating a soreness in his arm. . . . With the score tied in the seventh inning Monday night, with Martinez on second base, the Braves’ Zane Smith threw two careful pitches to pinch hitter Kurt Bevacqua (both balls) before he was ordered to walk Bevacqua intentionally. It was Bevacqua’s second intentional walk of this season, something that may become a trend, out of respect. “It is (different),” Bevacqua said. “You normally don’t walk a guy that’s not a home run hitter. . . . The (repsect) possibility is there”. . . . Fights: Alan Wiggins, presumably joking, saw Pascual Perez standing down the third base line during batting practice and told the pitcher to throw him a ball high and away, just so he could hit Perez. Perez was the one who threw at Wiggins last year, beginning that famed brawl in Atlanta. But that’s forgotten, right? . . . Add fights: The Padre coaches were thoroughly entertained by the Marvin Hagler-Thomas Hearns fight, which they watched on videotape before Tuesday’s game. Batting coach Deacon Jones said the first round was the “best ever” . . . Al Bumbry, a regular since 1973 and one of baseball’s nicest people, is not complaining, but he admits sitting on the bench is different. “I wouldn’t be any kind of ballplayer if I didn’t get itchy,” he said.

Cards’ Coleman steals Padres’ show | St. Louis absconds with 5-2 win

[Jeff Lahti] was brought in to face [Steve Garvey], who popped up to end the Padres’ eighth loss in their first 14 road games. o o o The Padres will pitch Dave Dravecky (0-2) against veteran right-hander Bob Forsch (2-1) today in the series finale. In San Diego, the KFMB-AM (760) radio broadcast begins at 10:15 a.m. … Pittsburgh will pitch Larry McWilliams (3-1) against Andy Hawkins (5-0) tomorrow night in the first game of the Padres’ next home stand and go with Mike Bielecki (1-1) against Mark Thurmond (0-2) Thursday afternoon … The Padres announced yesterday that the Saturday night and Sunday afternoon home games against the Cubs are sellouts … Garvey says he believes the hand injury [Kevin McReynolds] suffered in the playoffs last October has something to do with the power hitter’s slow start this spring. “I had a sore wrist four years ago,” Garvey said, “and it got so bad I had to ask Tommy (Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda) to pinch-hit for me in the ninth inning of a game. That was the day before the (players’) strike began. If it hadn’t been for the strike, I would have had to end my streak (for consecutive games played).” … When the Giants were here over the weekend, pitcher Dave LaPoint and catcher Bob Brenly said they had never seen anyone go from first to second as fast as [Vince Coleman] … With one error so far, the Cardinals’ Ozzie Smith is setting a pace that would break the National League record low Larry Bowa set for shortstops when he made only nine for Philadelphia in 1972 … As manager of the National League champions, [Dick Williams] will direct NL forces in the All- Star Game at Minnesota on July 16 and will select the NL pitching staff and substitutes … General managers Jack McKeon of the Padres and Dal Maxvill of the Cardinals talked at length last night.

    SULLIVAN TAKES PROBLEM-PLAGUED INDIANAPOLIS 500

”I was just holdin’ on,” said [Danny Sullivan]. ”I thought that was everything.” No other place has the combination of tradition and excess as Indy. From ”the world’s largest drum” that is pounded by a Purdue University student, on a flatbed truck lapping the track, to ”Taps” solemnly played for Memorial Day, to the cannons booming after the race’s start, this is an unmatched festival. A young woman, among the thousands who walked in the infield and never saw the race, shouted to no one in particular, ”America sure loves her cars.” Several Crashes Others who crashed were John Paul Jr. (hand injury) and Bill Whittington (chest X-rays, negative). ”I was having fun until the wheel came off,” said Paul. . . . Mears, who couldn’t even walk around the garage area all week, and used an electric cart, dropped out after 122 laps with linkage trouble. He broke both feet in a race near Montreal last September. . . . Al Unser, who finished fourth, and Johnny Rutherford, fifth, each was penalized a lap. Unser ran over an air hose in the pit area. Rutherford passed a driver during the yellow caution flag.

    Hubbard’s homer foils Astros’ comeback

After [Zane Smith] walked [Billy Doran] with one out in the sixth, Enos Cabell flied to center. Finally, the Astros broke through. With Doran running, [Dickie Thon] looped a clean single to right. The hit broke an 0-for-14 slump for Thon, dating back to May 13. [Jose Cruz] followed with a sharp single to right, snapping Smith’s shutout and lifting the Astros into a 1-1 tie. Kevin Bass had a chance to break the tie, but he bounced out to second to end the inning. [Ron Mathis], making his first start since May 28, settled down nicely after [Dale Murphy]‘s first-inning home run. He put runners on base in each of the next four innings, but a caught stealing, a pickoff and a double play helped keep the Braves off the board. So, too, did a pair of sliding catches by [Glenn Davis] in right field. He circled [Glenn Hubbard]‘s sinking liner before diving and grabbing it to end the third. In the fourth, with two runners on base, Davis slid in the bullpen to grab Larry Owen’s looping foul fly. After Smith lost his shutout, he reverted to form in the seventh. He retired the side in order, getting two more ground balls to Hubbard and a strikeout. In seven innings, Hubbard handled seven ground balls – including four in two innings. In the Braves’ seventh, Mathis finally cracked. He gave up a leadoff double to Terry Harper to start his downfall. Harper moved to third on Ken Oberkfell’s grounder to the right side. After Mathis walked Owen, [Bob Lillis] brought in [Mark Ross]. The Braves countered by pinch-hitting Claudell Washington for shortstop Paul Zuvella. Washington, who had missed four games with a hand injury, wasting no time. He hit a shot through the right side for an RBI single to make it 2-1. “He did what we wanted,” Lillis said of Ross. “He got a ground ball, it just found a hole.” Doran pulled the Astros even in the top of the eighth.

Hawkins may miss start with hand injury

It seemed to come as news to just about everyone yesterday when pitcher Andy Hawkins disclosed that he may not pitch again until after the All-Star break. Hawkins, who is San Diego’s scheduled starter tomorrow night in St. Louis, has a split on the index finger of his throwing hand. “It’s just a cut,” Hawkins said after the Padres and Eric Show were shoved all over Wrigley Field in a 7-3 loss to the Cubs. “But it’s been very debilitating. I can’t throw a slider or my cut fastball. If you think I can go out there with just my fastball and change-up, you’ve got to be kidding. Before [Roy Lee Jackson] could even pull on his new No. 39 jersey, [Ryne Sandberg] had deposited a fat first-inning pitch beyond the left-field screen out onto Waveland Avenue for a 2-0 Cub lead. That gave Show the distinction of having his pitches hit a pair of Chicago streets in consecutive Wrigley appearances.

Husker Gives Thumbs Up To Comeback in Football

“”I’m not going to play quarterback,” said [Randall] Jobman, a former all-state player from Oshkosh High School who is getting ready to begin his career as a defensive end for the University of Nebraska this fall. Jobman can’t grip a football to throw it. But it’s the only handicap he’s encountered in his return to the sport since suffering a severe hand injury last summer. On June 30 last year, Jobman’s right thumb was ripped from his hand while practicing calf roping, a rodeo event, at the rodeo arena in Lisco, Neb., Jobman’s hometown.

Wide-receiver Davis forced to leave Baylor

Newt Harrell, part of a thin group of Longhorn defensive tackles, is expected to miss most of the 1985 season because of a knee injury suffered in drills this week. Harrell, a sophomore backup from Canyon, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday, and Coach Fred Akers said it will be about eight weeks before Harrell can return to drills . . .Fullback Ronnie Robinson will undergo arthroscopic surgery Monday to determine the extent of a knee injury suffered Saturday. Surgery had been scheduled for this week, but was postponed when Robinson developed a urinary infection. Doctors have said extensive damage to the knee could sideline Robinson, a fifth-year senior, for the season . . .Reserve quarterback Shannon Kelley returned to drills Wednesday after a quick recovery from a hand injury suffered last week. Kelley, a redshirt freshman from Houston Memorial, had been expected to miss about two week because of the injury.

GROUND DEFENSE HIGHLIGHTS VICTORIES BY UNION, R-MC

In Union’s opener Saturday against Bowie State, the potent running attack led by freshman Donald Washington, wingback Michael Todd and perennial ground force Adrian Wright overshadowed the fine work by the Panthers’ defense. HAMPDEN-SYDNEY won its first game under coach Carmen Palladino Saturday and Richmonders Robby Waldrop and Willie Fobbs were responsible for 273 of the Tiger’s 310 offensive yards. Fobbs carried the ball 10 times for 107 yards and Waldrop completed 16 of 25 passes for 166 yards. IT MAY BE A LITTLE EARLY to be thinking about basketball, but at Longwood, the Lancers received some bad news. Junior guard Kevin Ricks has been sidelined indefinitely with a serious hand injury.

    TAILBACK PUSHING FOR TOP

Last year, Terry White suffered a broken hand at the beginning of the football season and a broken dream at the end. The Tinley Park tailback sustained the hand injury in the Titans’ season- opening victory over Rich South. It was actually the third week of the season, but Tinley Park forfeited its first two games because of a teachers’ strike. In Tinley Park’s first two games this year, nonconference victories over Bolingbrook and Argo, White rushed for 352 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned an interception for a TD. He was held to 70 yards in a 24-0 loss to Rich East Sept. 14. Saturday, White gained 101 yards on 21 carries in a 14-0 loss to Crete-Monee.

Hand Injury Won’t Keep Dickerson Out of Action

Playing his first game after a summer-long holdout, he complained of a bruised hand in the dressing room afterward. But what is being called a “small crack” by Ram officials wasn’t diagnosed until late Tuesday. Coach John Robinson didn’t mention it when listing team injuries during his Tuesday press luncheon, even when questioned about [Eric Dickerson]‘s practice schedule for the week. He didn’t even tell the Ram public relations staff. The Rams listed Dickerson as “probable” when the official National Football League injury list was posted Wednesday. A club spokesman said the injuries were so insignificant that Dickerson wouldn’t have been listed at all if he weren’t so prominent. Dickerson injured his hand in the first quarter but didn’t mention it to team doctors, only to trainer Jim Anderson, who taped a pad over it. Dickerson continued to play and rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns in his 1985 debut.

Once again, Topp is at bottom

Funny thing is, if he’d stayed at Stanford, he might have played there last year when starter John Paye went down with a hand injury. Paye was replaced by Fred Buckley, who used to be behind [Greg Topp] on the Cardinal quarterback ladder. “I think Topp would have taken over for Paye if he’d been here last year,” a member of the Cardinal athletic corps said yesterday. When Topp lends advice, he does not speak from experience. He was Stanford’s regular punter as a freshman in 1981, but his entire career as a collegiate passer consists of one appearance against Oregon State in 1982, and the numbers are not impressive: five passes, one completion, 4 yards, one interception.

NU Defensive End Earns Big 8 Honor, But Loses His Job

Nebraska defensive end Tony Holloway played well enough against New Mexico to be named the Big Eight Conference defensive player of the week, but not consistently enough to guarantee his starting position. George Darlington, Cornhusker defensive ends coach, said Tuesday that seniors Brad Smith and Scott Tucker will probably be the starters at defensive end for Saturday night’s game at Oklahoma State. Smith missed the New Mexico game with a hand injury, but is expected to play in the Big Eight opener against the Cowboys. “”Brad played extra well against Oregon and against Illinois,” Darlington said, “”and Scott Tucker graded better this week. He didn’t have as many chances as Tony. Tony made some big plays and had some that weren’t so good.”
