Royals begin another comeback
The Royals have been comeback, underdog, escape artists all season. Last night here, before 53,634 red-clad St. Louie loonies, they hung a 6-1 shroud of defeat on the Cards in Game No. 3, brushing back the dreaded word, sweep. * A Cardinals discard earlier this season, Lonnie Smith of the Royals, returned to his old home and drove in the first two runs, doing so with a clutch two-out double that barely eluded the grasp of right-fielder Andy Van Slyke. Smith extended his hitting streak in the post-season to six games, batting .423 in that span. [Bret Saberhagen] showed no ill effects from the hand injury he suffered when hit by a ball in the AL Championship Series against Toronto, a series that the Royals trailed, 2-0 and 3-1, before coming back to win in seven games. Neither did he show the effects of anticipating the birth of his first child, due any day.

ROYALS’ SABERHAGEN HAS COME OF AGE
[Bret Saberhagen], a 20-game winner this season, lived up to all the scouting reports that indicated he was Kansas City’s best pitcher. Saberhagen also proved that the hand injury which knocked him out of the American League play- offs has healed. The notion that youngsters can’t pitch a big game in the World Series was also erased. Saberhagen was the youngest pitcher to start a Series game since 21-year-old Jim Palmer worked for Baltimore in 1966. Palmer got a shutout, while Saberhagen had to settle for a six-hitter. That poise is what helped Saberhagen pitch out of jams in the first and sixth innings, the only time the Cardinals mounted a threat. Saberhagen got out of the first by striking out Jack Clark and then watching Willie McGee get thrown out on the front end of a double steal. In the sixth, the Cardinals scored a run with three singles. Then Saberhagen went to work and retired the last 11 batters.

Owls are running more since Comalander’s injury
The biggest change in Rice football this season, you ask? Well, besides the won-loss record, it’s the changes offensively, says Coach Watson Brown. “Really, we’re running the ball better than we’re throwing it right now,” he said. It only stands to reason, since the Owls lost starting QB Mark Comalander, a nationally ranked passer, to a shoulder separation. The Owls have taken more to the ground since Comalander’s departure. But the passing game never sank to the depths that it saw late in the A&M game Saturday. When QB Quentis Roper faded back, his pass was tipped by an A&M lineman. The fluttering ball was scooped up by Rice lineman Raul Loya. The play lost 16 yards. “I’ve been coaching 14 years and I’ve never had a completed pass go for minus-16 yards,” said Brown. “I asked him why he caught it and he said, `But coach, it was just floating out there.’ What are you going to do?” . . .DB Ernest Evans, who missed the Aggie game with a hand injury, will be back in the starting lineup against Arkansas . . .A recent magazine survey showed the Owls have the 12th-toughest Division I-A schedule.

Grogan big-play man as Pats knock off struggling Dolphins
“Brew’s pretty good,” said Bengal offensive guard Max Montoya. “He’s like a runaway beer truck.” The massive fullback said the pelting rain at Rich Stadium worked to his advantage. “When the field is wet like this, you can run straight at them,” said [Larry Kinnebrew], who made his first start following a hand injury that sidelined him for four games. “There’s not too much cutting, and it’s hard for the defense to get its footing.” Kinnebrew keyed a ball control Cincinnati offense that had the ball for almost twice the length of time the 1-8 Bills did. Boomer Esiason, the AFC’s highest-rated passer, threw a 68-yard scoring bomb to rookie Eddie Brown and a 22-yard touchdown toss to tight end M.L. Harris as the Bengals improved to 4-5. Aside from Kinnebrew’s production and Esiason’s 11 completions in 21 attempts for 193 passing yards, the Bengals also got a 31-yard field goal by Jim Breech. JETS 35, COLTS 17 — At Indianapolis, Ken O’Brien passed for 164 yards and a career-high three touchdowns for New York, which was aided by three Colt fumbles in the first half. The Jets, leading the AFC’s Eastern Division with a 7-2 record, scored on five of their first six possessions, including three times in less than four minutes in the second quarter. O’Brien’s second touchdown pass, a 7- yard toss to Wesley Walker that capped a 76-yard drive midway through the second period, started the Jets’ game-breaking streak. With backup quarterback and former Aztec Matt Kofler in the game, Indianapolis went 25 yards in 10 plays, and Kofler scored on a 1- yard run with 9:27 left in the final quarter. The Colts dropped to 3-6.

TWO PILOTS AND NAVY JET FALL FROM SKY
Rescue workers and state police retrieved the two pilots, both of whom apparently escaped serious injury. Navy authorities identified the two as Navy Cmdr. Ron Miller and Marine Maj. Tom White, both stationed at the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, Calif. Navy officials at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland — where the two men were taken by Marine helicopter — said today Miller was released from the hospital there. White was treated for a hand injury today and sent to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. The crash attracted between 500 and 1,000 sightseers to the muddy cornfield where the jet crashed and burned for about 10 minutes. The onlookers, many of whom parked their cars along a 1 1/2 mile stretch of Route 623, hampered firefighters who arrived about 5 p.m.

Hand injury could sideline Watson for Aztecs’ season opener
As of last night, [Smokey Gaines] did not know if he would have [Anthony Watson] available for the Aztecs’ season opener next Friday night at Fresno. The Aztecs will compete in the four-team Sun-Met Classic, opening up the tournament with a game against Louisiana Tech. As bad as the news was on Watson, the darkest statement of all out of Peterson Gym yesterday was Gaines saying that [Steffond Johnson] might miss as many as 10 games throughout the year because of his sore back. The Aztecs only play 27 games, and without Johnson this team will be in trouble. Replacing Johnson will be more of a challenge for Gaines. If the season opened today, Gaines said he likely would start three guards, which he will tomorrow night against AIA.

UT’s Akers disagrees with Dodds’ edict
BAYLOR-TEXAS NOTES: [Fred Akers] said he’s not planning on either freshman tailback Eric Metcalf or quarterback Bret Stafford being able to play against the Bears. Metcalf is on crutches with a “moderate to severe” strained ligament in his right ankle, Akers said. Stafford’s left arm is in a sling after he suffered a mild dislocation in UT’s victory over TCU on Saturday. Stafford, however, reported reduced soreness in his arm and said he hopes to return to practice today . . .Akers said he expects tight end William Harris to return to the lineup this week. Harris has been sidelined with a hand injury . . .Akers acknowledged a difference in his team’s mental outlook from a year ago when the Longhorns fell to Baylor 24-10, the first of three season-ending losses for UT. “It’s much more upbeat,” Akers said. “First of all, Baylor’s in a different position. The stakes are different. The difference is we’re younger. We’re improving, and we’re less injured now than we were this time a year ago”

M’S WON’T OFFER PACT TO COWENS
With player contract offers for 1986 due out today, team officials decided yesterday not to send one to outfielder Al Cowens. The 34-year-old Cowens, the team’s regular right fielder since arriving from Detroit prior to the 1982 season, now becomes a free agent. Cowens will be joined in freelance status by relief pitcher Salome Barojas, to whom the Mariners also did not tender a contract. In a simultaneous move, the Mariners have asked waivers on outfielder Donnell Nixon to assign him to Calgary. The move, which could be called drastic, has two causes – one strategic, the other financial. The most important is that the Mariners regard young Ivan Calderon as their new right fielder. He hit .286 in 210 at-bats to Cowens’ .269 in 426 at-bats last year. Indeed, with Calderon in right last June and July, Seattle won 16 of 20 games, its best stretch of the year. Later in the season, a hand injury sidelined Calderon. The injury supposedly was corrected by surgery in September.

Pats’ Fryar Out – Hand Injury
“The doctor feels his chances of a complete recovery from the injury would be hindered seriously” if he were to play Sunday, [Patrick Sullivan] said. The finger is expected to heal completely if [Irving Fryar] doesn’t play in the Miami game, the GM added. Sullivan said Fryar would be checked again by doctors on Monday to see if he could play in the Super Bowl January 26 if the Patriots beat the Dolphins. [Raymond Berry] said Stephen Starring would replace Fryar at wide receiver and Roland James and Fred Marion would handle punt returns in place of the injured player.

Fryar’s Hand Injuy Clouds His Status For Playoff Game
A hand injury suffered by wide receiver Irving Fryar cast a pall over the New England Patriots Wednesday as they traveled to Miami for the AFC championship game with the Dolphins. Fryar, a major force in the Patriots’ offense and the leading punt returner in the National Football League, injured two fingers on his right hand with a kitchen knife as he was preparing to join the team for a pep rally and the flight to Miami. “”He cut his fingers on a knife and suffered lacerations to his ring and small fingers,” Sigman said. “”The ring injury is a minor laceration which was repaired. The laceration on the small finger also involved the flexor tendon at the last joint of the finger.”

CALM AMID STORM
Yes. These obstacles swirl over and through the Patriots, 25 years of them with this team, one every so often, but not this often, first one in Los Angeles on Sunday, then the next on Wednesday with Fryar’s hand injury and now the third with the full story of Fryar’s problems. This was supposed to be the Patriots’ finest week, but what next? The obstacles never come from the same direction. The specifics of Fryar’s incident with his wife were not discussed by the Patriots. It was learned that Fryar had first repeated his original story – that he cut his hand while returning a kitchen knife to a drawer – had been blasted by Sullivan and then gradually the story changed until Fryar admitted a domestic scuffle. Sullivan would say only the Patriots “have pledged their full support and resources to help the Fryars.” Yes, says Channel 7′s Gary Gillis, Jackie Cooper had been one of the cheerleaders for the Boston Breakers of the US Football League. Gillis had been the team’s publicity director then; now he is trying to remember what he can of one of the Breakers’ cheerleaders. More questions are asked of more people; the Fryars have been married one year today and Jackie Fryar is five months pregnant. This is most unfortunate. What can be done has been done earlier in the day. Now Sullivan is explaining how he told coach Raymond Berry at about 9 a.m. of this latest episode, how Berry took the news quietly, that it seemed to have little outward effect on the coach.
