TV SPORTS; TIP OF THE MIKE TO BROADCASTING’S BEST
His handling of Irving Fryar’s hand injury on Sunday was a big letdown. He called the injury ”curious” and ”mysterious” but never told us the latest reports that Fryar, apparently involved in a domestic dispute, had not been completely forthcoming with his tale of a ”kitchen accident.” Too hot to handle? Ex-player: Ahmad Rashad, NBC. Like [Bob Costas], Rashad always seems to be thisclose to real laughter. They seem to work well together -”You’re right, Bobby,” Rashad often says – and usually has something to say that is worth listening to, especially when he is at the stadium instead of in the studio. Parimutuel Clerk: Pete Axthelm, NBC. He gets the nod in part for his spunk and friendly face and in part for his so-close-it-was-scary prediction that the Bears would beat the Giants, 23-0. (The final was 21-0). He almost blew it Sunday by picking the Dolphins, but got a break when CBS’s Jimmy Snyder predicted Rams would beat Bears. Thus, NBC gains a sweep in the first three slots, reflecting both team and individual accomplishments. Because NBC’s contract is to do A.F.C. games, its teams are generally situated in smaller markets and its ratings lag. Of the top 10 markets, NBC has two, CBS has six and they share New York and Los Angeles. Maybe, as a result, Costas & Co. try harder. But they don’t try too hard, or if they do, they hide it well. The CBS crew, however, does not ooze genuineness. Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Snyder try too hard to convince us they’re smart and savvy and having fun. Maybe if they just didn’t giggle so much we’d believe them.

DITKA: ‘BASIC GUY’ MOLDS UNCOMMON TEAM
”They’re both winners,” said [Mike Ditka], sitting in his office in Halas Hall. ”And I’m open to suggestion. Sure, I’ve had disagreements with both of them. But they’ve not been so serious we couldn’t work out problems. That’s why I got this sign, right here.” He looked around his desk crowded with papers and books and a football or two, as well as a cardboard tray with two soon-to-be-consumed pieces of fried chicken. ”Here it is,” he said, reaching into a far corner of he desk. ”Last year, [McMahon] was hurt,” said Ditka, ”and we weren’t saying much to each other because there wasn’t much to say.” McMahon had suffered a severely bruised back and a hand injury. ”I asked the trainer when Jim would be back. He said, ‘Jim says Wednesday.’ Wednesday comes and he’s not in uniform for practice. Then the trainer says, ‘Jim says Friday.’ Friday comes and again he’s not ready for practice. Well, it turned out that he was hurt worse than he let on. He kept saying he was going to practice because he wanted to, but then when the time came he realized he couldn’t. And when I found this out, that’s when I got this sign.” ”I remember playing in the Little League and I always wanted to win,” he said. ”I don’t know where it came from, but I had this attitude, this competitiveness. I was never a good loser. I was the captain of my Little League team and the best player. And when someone would make an error, I would kick him out of the position and I’d play. If the pitcher walked two guys in a row, I’d come in and pitch. The manager didn’t say anything. I was terrible. I didn’t have many friends in the Little League.”

Healthy Vaive adds punch to Leafs
[Rick Vaive] had three goals in the two games, his first scores in seven matches since coming off a long absence with a hand injury. When the Leafs rebounded to win Sunday’s game here, Vaive had five shots on goal and a key score, his 17th of the season in 34 games. A hot Vaive, who had three 50-goal seasons, is a must if the Leafs are to mount sufficient offence to be competitive. Even when everything is clicking, the Leafs aren’t likely to make anyone forget Edmonton Oilers on the attack, but lately, their offence has been puny and their few good scorers have developed stone hands. In the past 11 games, the Leafs have scored 35 goals. But the surrender of 60 in that stretch has led to a record of three wins and eight losses. Fortunately for the Leafs, Detroit Red Wings have won only two games in the same period and that has allowed the Leafs to hold a six-point edge on the Wings for fourth place and playoff participation in the Norris Division.

Oliver bids farewell to bigs as he goes to bat for teens
[Al Oliver] spent two seasons – 1982-83 – with the Expos. In ’82 he won the NL batting title with a .331 average; led the league in hits (204) and in doubles (43) and tied the Braves’ Dale Murphy for the league lead in runs batted in with 109. He also had 22 homers. In ’83, Oliver tied for the league lead in doubles with 38 on his way to batting an even .300. When Lou Gehrig played his record 2,130 straight games, his longest playing-every-inning streak was 163 games. The only players other than [Cal Ripken] and Freeman to play every inning for two solid years are Candy LaChance (1903-04 Red Sox), Larry Gardner (1919-20 Pirates), Chuck Klein (1932-33 Phillies), Gus Suhr (1932-33 Pirates) and Rudy York (1940-41 Tigers). The indoor batting cage at Yankee Stadium, the Columbus room, is named for team’s AAA farm team, the Columbus Clippers. Shortstop Bobby Meacham, who’s been hitting there all winter, says the room is “as close to Columbus as I ever want to get again.” Coach Roy White is going to try making Meacham into a switch-hitter this spring. Playing with a nagging hand injury, Meacham hit just .218 last year, down from .253 in ’84.

Pate, Battling Pain in Comeback Bid, Hopes to Make a Big Splash Again
[Jerry Pate] was golf’s newest star when he won the 1976 U.S. Open as a tour rookie. At the time of the injury, a week before the British Open, Pate was the leading money winner of ’82 with more than $280,000 in earnings. He had won the Tournament Players Championship. Life was wonderful. “Except for a hand injury in 1976, I never had pain, so I really didn’t know what it is,” Pate said. “I work out every day, but that can get old. I’m not discouraged, but I wish I could get my strength back. Strength in the shoulder is important to a golfer.” Before the injury, Pate had won eight tournaments on the tour. It was at the Danny Thomas Memphis Open in 1981 that Pate came up with the idea of diving into water after his victory. It was a spontaneous reaction, he said.

The master mechanic behind all this is a romantic figure himself. He was born in the Provencal city of Arles and as a youngster was an apprentice “smithy” and a baker’s helper. While working as a blacksmith, a hand injury needed physical therapy so he turned to painting and that drew him into the study of color, shape and form which he eventually translated into designing clothes.

Whitson still at wit’s end in the Bronx Zoo
Also contributing to the decision to sell his house was that throughout the season Whitson kept getting these weird phone calls – - nasty ones, as in the caller didn’t think Whitson should be living anymore and suggested doing something quite drastic about it. Whitson enjoyed the biggest (and most peaceful) year of his career in 1984 when he went 14-8 with the Padres. He blamed his slow start last season on the fact that the Yankees insisted he keep throwing his palmball when he wanted to throw predominantly fastballs. one reliable Yankees source said that it was Whitson who wanted to throw the (off-speed) palmball when the club wanted him to throw more fastballs. Whitson had credited his 1984 success to the development of his palmball following a hand injury.

Mulligan Is Thinking About BYU, Not His Chances for USC Job
[Bill Mulligan] celebrated St. Patrick’s Day Provo style. The Anteaters arrived there Monday afternoon and were scheduled to practice there Monday night. Tonight marks the first-ever meeting between UCI and BYU. . . . The Cougars lost twice to Utah State, their rivals to the north, this season. UCI swept its two PCAA games against Utah State. . . . Reserve guard Mike Hess overcame his reluctance to shoot in the win over UCLA. Hess, who had attempted only 12 shots in the six games before NIT play, was 5 of 7 from the field against the Bruins. He finished with 10 points and 5 assists, his best offensive showing since a 16-point performance against Nebraska in UCI’s second game of the season. . . . [Johnny Rogers] has played 40 minutes in each of Irvine’s last four games. . . . A win tonight would assure the Anteaters of their best-ever performance in a postseason tournament. UCI reached the second round of the NIT in 1982. With All-America center Kevin Magee sidelined with a hand injury, the Anteaters lost to Oklahoma, 80-77. . . . Irvine players will have more than BYU on their minds. This is final exams week at UCI.

By coming from behind to beat Arizona Saturday, 14-12, USC equalled its 1985 victory total in the Pac-10 Southern Division. The Trojans, 5-3 in league play, didn’t win their fifth conference game last season until May 5. They then lost their next four and finished with a 5-25 record. The Trojans, who trailed going into the bottom of the fourth inning, 8-5, scored six runs to take a lead they never relinquished. In all, six of USC’s 15 victories have been comebacks. . . . UCLA’s [Torey Lovullo] wouldn’t mind facing Cal pitching every week. In helping the Bruins sweep the three-game series, he went 8 for 14 and drove in 14 runs. In Monday’s 18-9 victory, he went 3 for 6, including a grand slam homer, and drove in 7 runs. Lovullo, who entered the series with a .230 average and 12 RBIs, is batting .283 and leads the team with 26 RBIs. . . . Cal State Fullerton opened play in the Best In The West tournament at Fresno State Monday with an 8-2 win over Nevada Reno. Catcher John Eccles keyed the Titans’ six-run third inning with his second grand slam of the season. Eccles, a senior who missed almost a month of the 1985 season with shoulder and hand injuries, has 7 homers and 31 RBIs. In 42 games last year, he hit 1 homer and drove in 14 runs.

Freshmen Lead Husker Women’s Bid Coach: NU Gymnasts Could Dethrone Sooners
After two years of runnerup finishes to Oklahoma in Big Eight women’s gymnastics, Nebraska might be ready to unseat the Sooners this weekend at the conference championships. “”Oklahoma has turned in a couple of high scores the last two weeks,” NU Coach Rick Walton said Wednesday. “”But they haven’t been in a big meet yet or met the kind of teams or been put under the pressure we have. Miss [Renee] Gould, a sophomore from Lincoln, will miss the Big Eight meet with her hand injury. Last year, she redshirted because of a stress fracture in the same hand. Walton said she still has a problem with the hand, but that X-rays have been inconclusive.

Nunn, 14-0 with 10 knockouts, has swelling around two knuckles on his left hand, a condition believed caused by a buildup of scar tissue and possible cartilage damage. He has received a cortisone shot and is wearing a cast on the hand to reduce the swelling. If that treatment fails, Nunn faces surgery that could sideline him for three to four months.

PROSECUTION, DEFENSE OPEN CASES DURING WOMAN’S TRIAL FOR MURDER
Prosecutor [Bill Ingaldson] said [Charmaine Roark] tried to open the door by using nails to jimmy the lock. Next, he said, she came at [Howard Taylor] with a butcher knife. He said that Taylor’s hands were cut when he reached for the knife in self- defense. Both [John Salemi] and Ingaldson said that Taylor and Roark received hand injuries from the struggle for the knife. Defense lawyer Salemi said Roark got more concerned as it got closer to noon and Taylor still had not come out of the bathroom to pack for a 2 p.m. flight. In a last-ditch effort to lure him out, Roark threatened to sell a gun of his in order to get money, Salemi said.

Spurs feel capable of giving Lakers the boot
Western Conference Los Angeles (62-20) vs. San Antonio (35-47) After a 24-20 start, the Spurs were considered one of the league’s surprise teams. But then injury or illness struck starters [Artis Gilmore], Steve Johnson and Johnny Moore. San Antonio won only 11 of their final 38 games to barely hold on to a final playoff berth. But even with Gilmore and Johnson healthy now, it would be surprising if the Lakers, with their all-star cast of Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, Magic Johnson and James Worthy, failed to sweep the series. Series starts tonight. Houston (51-31) vs. Sacramento (37-45) The Rockets, with their twin towers of the 7-4 Ralph Sampson and the 7- 0 Akeem Olajuwon, could be a playmaker away from being a bona fide title contender. Since John Lucas suffered a drug relapse, Coach Bill Fitch has tried Alan Leavell, who missed the final five games of season with a hand injury, and Robert Reid at the position. Both teams have had trouble winning on the road. The best of the Kings are their backcourt trio of Larry Drew, Mike Woodson and Reggie Theus. Series starts tonight. Denver (47-35) vs. Portland (40-42) In June 1984, the Trail Blazers traded Wayne Cooper, Calvin Natt and Lafayette (Fats) Lever to the Nuggets for Kiki Vandeweghe, whose scoring was supposed to have enabled Portland to challenge the Lakers for divisional honors. Instead, the trade helped the Nuggets more. If Denver can win on the road, something it had trouble doing all season, the Nuggets should be able to get by Portland. The Trail Blazers suffered through a 12-game losing streak in February after losing center Sam Bowie for the season with a leg injury. After trying to replace Bowie with the aging Caldwell Jones, Coach Jack Ramsay moved Mychal Thompson from power forward to the middle. Alex English, with his soft jumpers, is capable of putting a lot of points on the board for the Nuggets. Series starts tomorrow night. Dallas (44-38) vs.

NL roundup; Expos bomb Reds with 4 homers in fourth inning; Expos 7, Reds 4
[Mike Fitzgerald] capped a four-home run outburst in the fourth inning by hitting a two-run homer, his second of the year, in the Expos’ victory over the Reds. AT ATLANTA, Darryl Strawberry drilled a three-run homer in the sixth inning to power the Mets to their 10th straight victory. Strawberry connected off losing reliever Craig McMurtry, 0-1. Bruce Berenyi hurled 11/3 innings to improve to 1-0. Roger McDowell went three innings to earn his first save. Atlanta’s Dale Murphy, a two-time NL most valuable player, suffered a hand injury in the third inning that club officials said would sideline him for one week. AT PHILADELPHIA, Mike Schmidt drove in four runs to increase his league-leading total to 19 and lead Philadelphia over Houston. The Phillies took advantage of wildness by Houston starter Nolan Ryan, 3-3, to score six runs in the first inning. Milt Thompson and Rick Schu walked to start the inning and, after a wild pitch, Thompson scored when first baseman Glenn Davis threw home late on a Von Hayes chopper. Schmidt followed with his fifth homer of the season for a 4-0 lead.
