Worker’s Death by `Nail Gun’ Investigated

Without concrete behind the wood, [William Loupe] said, the nail would have gone through the board “like butter.” It struck [Salbador Aguayo Bernal] in the right shoulder. Police said the nail passed through Bernal’s right and left lungs and severed his aorta. Bernal was declared dead about an hour later at a nearby hospital, official said. “You talk about bizarre,” Loupe said Friday. “He just happened to be walking by the wall at this time, the gun just happens to hit the board and no concrete at this time. . . . You have people injured sometimes if the concrete (shatters) and they aren’t wearing face masks like we require them to, so we have some eye injuries or hand injuries,” Loupe said. “But this is the first (accident) I can recall that was fatal.”

Hand injury keeps Wallach on bench

Tim Wallach, hit in the left hand by a pitch in the first game of Saturday’s twin-bill, left the second game some 14 innings later and went to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for X-rays, which showed nothing broken. Wallach rested Sunday and wasn’t in the starting lineup last night, either . . . Saturday was the 10th time Wallach has been hit by a pitch, by far the most of any Expo . . . With the AAA Indianapolis Indians getting set for the American Association playoffs, the Expos chose not to call up catcher Nelson Santovenia from that club. Instead, they brought catcher Geff Davis, 24, from A-level Burlington. Davis hit .246 there this year, with 10 homers in 111 games. [Randy Hunt] was back in uniform Sunday, however, and Davis was never activated . . . Joe Hesketh, who went home while the Expos toured the West Coast, is back in Montreal, waiting to find out when he can start rehabilitation work on his left shoulder. California’s noted sports surgeon Frank Jobe operated on Hesketh’s left shoulder Aug. 8, to repair a shoulder-nerve impingement which had caused atrophy in a shoulder muscle.

Hospital Center Provides a Helping Hand to Injured

People hurt their fingers playing sports, get their hands mangled in snowblowers and lawnmowers, run afoul of power tools, put their hands where they don’t belong on all sorts of industrial machinery, and occasionally get their fingers and hands completely lopped off. The loss to the United States economy due to hand injury and illness is estimated at $15 billion a year. The Hand Center of Western New York, which celebrated its opening at Millard Fillmore Hospital last week, hopes to put a dent in that figure locally by helping workers to recover from hand injury and get back to work more quickly. L.A.’s Wilson hurt; Plunkett will start

Jim Plunkett, who hasn’t played for the Raiders since suffering a season-ending injury in the third game of the 1985 campaign, will draw the starting assignment against the Giants in the game at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Plunkett’s backup is Rusty Hilger. [Curt Marsh], in his sixth year with the Raiders, has a knee injury and a hand injury. Walker, a safety and kick returner, played in the Raiders’ final 13 games last year, but was waived during the preseason. The Eagles signed outside linebacker Seth Joiner, an eighth- round draft pick out of Texas-El Paso who didn’t make the team’s Sept. 1 cut. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Joiner fills the spot on the roster created when [Earnest Jackson] was released.

    Raiders Make Out Like Bandits

Jack Reader, the NFL’s video replay official, was asked for a ruling. Moments later, after apparently misunderstanding what Reader said, [John Keck] told the Raiders to kick the extra point Napoleon McCallum scored on a 12-yard run to bring the Raiders to within three, 17-14. Then [Jim Plunkett], coming off the bench after [Marc Wilson] suffered a hand injury, put the Raiders on top, 21-17, with a five-play, 46-yard scoring march capped by Jessie Hester’s touchdown catch. Chris Bahr added a 19-yard field goal for 24-17.

Chargers Try Power of Positive Thinking

Not much happened with Air Coryell between touchdowns on the game’s first and last series. The Chargers had the ball only 21 minutes, partly because they converted only three of 10 chances on third down, contrasted with Denver’s 60% efficiency. Linebacker Gary Plummer, who ranks second on the team in tackles, has been through a longer losing streak than San Diego’s present five-game drought. As a member of the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League, Plummer once endured nine straight defeats. Defensive backs Ken Taylor and Vencie Glenn were praised by Coach Dan Coryell for their play against Denver. . . . Defensive lineman Leslie O’Neal, bothered by a hand injury, also played well, Coryell said. . . . Linebacker Thomas Benson required two pain-killing shots to get through the game after suffering a hip pointer. Benson probably won’t practice this week but should be able to play Sunday at Kansas City. . . . Center Don Macek, bothered by back spasms, is questionable for this week’s game. He has been replaced by Jim Leonard. . . . Linebacker Derrie Nelson also is questionable because of a hamstring injury.

CHRISTMAS OF LITTLE CHEER — DISABLING HAND INJURY LEAVES PAINTER FACING BLEAK HOLIDAY — MEDICAL CATCH-22 SNARES FAMILY

Charlie McGowan never seemed to stop talking as he sat with his wife, Zaida, in a drab downtown Seattle apartment trying to explain the circumstances that forced him to ask society for help. McGowan, 32, got up from his chair to place a blanket over one of the couple’s two children. As he turned his back a cockroach crept up the wall only inches from the sleeping baby’s head. While her husband talked, Zaida McGowan, a quiet woman 12 years his junior, sat at a table writing Christmas letters. During the days while McGowan wanders the town, looking for help, Zaida McGowan also is busy. She has four children to watch, Charlie, 1; Jeremiah, 2; and two of McGowan’s children from a previous marriage, Jason, 6; and Audrey, 7.

    O’Koren forgotten on Bullets’ bench

Among others. “Yes, I’m surprised by the way he’s played,” [Pat Riley] said, “but only from what I saw initially when A.C. was wearing his cast. In the beginning, it was horrendous. “But, not only has A.C. learned to adapt to it, his teammates have. We made a point in practice that the players had to concentrate more when throwing him a pass, put it on his good hand. They seem to understand and have made the adjustment, and he’s really concentrated on making the catch.” As a result, the Lakers believe they truly have themselves a catch. Drafted 23rd overall in the first round in 1985, [Green] played in all 82 regular-season games as a rookie — mostly as small forward James Worthy’s backup — leading the Lakers in rebounding 11 times. He had a dynamic effort in only his second pro game, getting 17 points and 16 rebounds in a game at Dallas. Green averaged 6.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in 18.8 minutes. He started strong, averaging 11.3 points in October-November and 8.3 points in December, but as the season wore on past the length of a normal collegiate season, his consistency ebbed and so did his minutes. By the time the Lakers reached the Western Conference finals against Houston, Riley decided to let the rookie sit. He didn’t play a minute as the Rockets eliminated the Lakers in five games. “We went with the guy (Maurice Lucas) we brought in for that express purpose,” Riley said. “In the playoffs, the substitution rotation shrinks down to the best players anyway, and I decided to go with the veteran. “It didn’t work out but, given the same circumstances at the time, I would make the same decision.” Once the Lakers failed to make the NBA finals for the first time in five years, however, there were other decisions to be made. This time, Green painted himself into the picture. Playing for the Lakers’ entry in the Southern California Summer Pro League, Green averaged 28.3 points and 13.4 rebounds a game — both league highs. The Lakers were so convinced of Green’s improvement and need for increased minutes they released the 35-year-old Lucas (the club’s leading rebounder last season) in September and allowed free agent Larry Spriggs (a part-time starter on the 1985 championship team) to sign with the Real Madrid team in Spain. “I want to move A.C. in, in a big way,” Riley said at the time. “It’s time and he’s ready.” Despite the temporary setback because of the thumb injury, Riley has no second thoughts about the decision. “We had to develop our younger players, A.C. and (1986 first-round pick) Billy Thompson,” he said.

    SCHAUMBURG KNOCKS OFF ELK GROVE

Schaumburg’s 6-foot-3-inch, 230-pound center is never happier than when the game gets rough. He has rarely been happier than he was Friday night after Schaumburg rallied to post a 69-66 Mid-Suburban League South Division victory over previously undefeated Elk Grove on the winners’ court. “I was really getting into the game. It was really exciting at that point. That’s the way I like to play,” grinned Everitt, who is better known for his skills as a bruising tight end than a finesse-type jump-shooter. Elk Grove (7-1, 1-1) clung to a 62-60 lead with 3 minutes 44 seconds to play when guard Cory Creager left the game with a hand injury. He was soon followed to the bench by forward John Dierking and center Steve Buehler, who fouled out.

Serious hand injuries regular part of boxing for most pro fighters

“It’s an inescapable situation,” says [Donny Lalonde]‘s manager, David Wolf. “It’s part of the reality of being Donny Lalonde.” “It’s a puncher’s problem,” echoes Ray Rutter, who manages [Willy Featherstone]. “Pitty-pat boxers like (Halifax welterweight) Rickey Anderson and (Toronto lightweight) Remo DiCarlo will not have the same problems. The gloves also differ from one jurisdiction to another. In Ontario, for example, boxers up to and including the welterweight (147-pound) weight class wear eight-ounce gloves, while boxers in the heavier divisions wear 10-ounce gloves.

Beirut airport hit, empty jet set afire

Lebanese leaders put on a rare display of unity Wednesday in congratulating [Camille Chamoun] on his narrow escape from the car bomb attack that killed seven people. Lebanon’s Christian president, Amin Gemayel, rushed to the hospital where Chamoun was treated for slight hand injuries Wednesday after the blast killed three of his bodyguards and four other people. About 40 people were also wounded. Rashid Karami, Lebanon’s Moslem prime minister, and Druse leader Walid Jumblatt sent congratulations to Chamoun after his escape from the bomb, which went off by remote control as his motorcade drove through Beirut.

At last, there’s a reason to tune-in (not turn-in) after news

Reruns rule the tube after the 11 o’clock news, alleviated only by Johnny Carson — who’s probably interviewing Don Rickles again — and ABC’s “Nightline,” where the guest experts are either Henry Kissinger and David Gergen, or David Gergen and Henry Kissinger. The Wednesday entry is “Adderly,” in my opinion the most appealing of the bunch. In “Adderly,” Winston Rekert plays V.H. Adderly, who used to be an operative for a CIA-like agency until he suffered a serious hand injury. So now he keeps the disabled hand in a black glove, and works for another government agency, the “Office of Miscellaneous Affairs,” which assigns him to provide security for a variety of people, from a Russian ballerina to a senator’s daughter. “Hot Shots,” a rather flip, sassy production about a pair of crime-cracking reporters for “Crime Story” magazine, until recently ran on Tuesdays, but has been taken off the air. The network says it will return sometime later. Reruns of “T.J. Hooker” switched from Fridays to Tuesdays to make room for “Cruisin’,” and repeats of “Simon and Simon” are shown Monday nights.

Wheaton North surprised Du Page Valley rival Naperville North 47-38 yesterday to pull into a first-place tie in the conference. Wheaton North (13-4, 5-1) used a furious fourth-quarter blitz to defeat previously unbeaten Naperville North (14-1, 5-1). Libertyville 51, Warren 38: Libertyville (14-2, 8-1) outscored Warren 24-6 in the third quarter to overcome a 18-16 halftime deficit in a North Suburban Conference game at Libertyville. The Tigers managed this feat with Terri Rodgers, their top player, sidelined with a first-half hand injury. Alissa Oakley picked up the Tigers by scoring a career-high 25 points, 22 in the second half on 11-of-15 shooting. She also had 14 rebounds.
