Boxing / Richard Hoffer King-Lewis Collaboration Falls Into Disunity

Another Olympian in the news: Super-heavyweight gold medalist Tyrell Biggs, the WBA’s top-ranked heavyweight, has added a tree, a parking meter and a light pole to his list of victims. Tuesday he ran his 1986 Mercedes up a sidewalk in Laguna Beach, doing more damage to municipal property than to himself. Police said no drugs or alcohol were involved. But watch out for a car with the vanity plates BAD JAB. . . . Still another ’84 grad: [Willie Harris] deWit, Olympic silver medalist, will make his network TV debut Feb. 14 when he fights [Bert Cooper]. DeWit is selling ‘em out in Regina, Saskatchewan, his hometown. . . . And another: The team’s most stylish boxer, Mark Breland, will fight Harold Volbrecht Feb. 6 in Atlantic City for the vacant WBA welterweight title. The welterweight title had been a world title until Britain’s Lloyd Honeyghan was stripped of the WBA portion when he refused to fight Volbrecht, a white South African, because of apartheid politics there. Honeyghan nevertheless holds the WBC and IBF portions, gained from his upset of Donald Curry, and will defend them Feb. 22 against Johnny Bumphus. Last Olympian: Local Paul Gonzales hasn’t fought since last summer at Lake Tahoe. And, despite a hand injury, he has been ready and desperate to fight for a while. There is little interest from the networks. Word is that the Gonzales fight, shown on CBS, was out-pointed in the Nielsen ratings by a fight involving Buddy McGirt on NBC. CBS might not show its wonder boy again until he gets a title fight. Under the category of Livingstone I presume, file the name of Ras-I-Halujah Bramble. The former lightweight champion, dunked by Edwin Rosario before a big-bucks showdown with WBC champion Hector Camacho could happen, is trying the game with a new handle. He’ll start with Cornelius Boza-Edwards, possibly Feb. 1, in a record-hyphen fight. . . . Camacho, meanwhile, does not like life at lightweight, now that Bramble is gone. Faced with the prospect of fighting Rosario, whom he had narrowly defeated in a very tough fight, Camacho has decided to move up a division. He reportedly has turned down a $1-million offer from [Don King] to fight Rosario and unify the title in March. Camacho apparently believes that if he moves up, he will not only be rid of Rosario but also of King. He thinks he’ll automatically be let out of a $2-million, five-fight contract with King. He’d better get a good lawyer.

Hand injury leaves OHL official Prisniak out of action for month

Prisniak, officiating in his seventh OHL season, had his left thumb severely cut by the skate of Ottawa 67′s winger Warren Rychel Sunday afternoon in the 67′s win over the Cornwall Royals. A foreman with Milton Hydro, Prisniak will be unable to use the hand for three to six weeks and the doctors advised him it could be three to six months before he regains feeling in it. And doctors are not guaranteeing Prisniak will regain full use of his hand. The OHL hands out referees’ assignments about three weeks in advance and Prisniak had five games upcoming on his schedule. It will mark the first time he has been unable to make an assignment because of injury.

Analyst Denies Taking Bribes From Victims

Larry Kemble Callahan, 49, was arrested last November outside the state office building in Los Angeles after he allegedly accepted a $1,000 bribe on behalf of a 20-year-old assault victim who had been given $8,800 under the Victims of Crime program, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Lawrence E. Mason. An associate government programs analyst, Callahan was responsible for reviewing about 150 claims from crime victims each month and recommending whether the board should approve them, according to Judith A. Embree, deputy executive officer of the board. In August, [Roy Chambliss] himself had paid Callahan $8,200 to recommend approval of a $22,000 claim, the prosecutor said. [Mason] said Chambliss had suffered a hand injury in “a dispute” but was unable to provide further details.

Onawa to Test Unbeaten Mapleton Again

Onawa West Monona gets a second chance at halting Mapleton’s highgeared offense tonight in the boys basketball feature at Mapleton. In the first meeting of the Maple Valley Conference teams, West Monona played the Ramblers tough for almost a half before falling 96-63. “”We have developed some bench strength by necessity,” said West Monona Coach Gary Niichel, who lost guard Steve Murray with a hand injury.

BRUINS ARE REGROUPING INJURIES FORCE BUFFALO SHUFFLE

Such is the Bruins’ manpower situation that the mere appearance of an injured player brings that reaction. Gradin (groin/ hip flexor injury) most certainly can’t play before Friday in Winnipeg. Meanwhile, an entire line has been wiped out for tonight’s game against the Sabres (7:30, Channel 38). Tom McCarthy (sore ribs, but no kidney problem) and Rick Middleton (concussion) are definitely out, and O’Reilly won’t let Cam Neely (hand injury) play, although Neely thinks he can. “The Montreal doctor said the X-rays showed little cracks, but that they were from previous breaks,” said McCarthy, “but Dr. [Richard Weiss] said I’m old enough that old breaks would have healed. I guess there are little cracks, hairline cracks, but they’re not very serious. I guess I’m on a day-to-day basis.” Weiss, howver, said McCarthy will miss 10 days to two weeks. Injuries aside, the Bruins are carrying a three-game losing streak that has not followed a standard pattern. “Against Quebec (2-1), we played a great game,” said O’Reilly. Almost acceptable. “Against Toronto (5-4) . . . it bothered me, but I could understand it because of the four-day layoff.” Not acceptable. “And Montreal (7-3) was the biggest disappointment.” Totally unacceptable. “I know I complain about the officials, but Montreal’s special teams were working,” said O’Reilly. The Canadiens were 3 for 5 on power plays, and their penalty killers blanked the Bruins five times in six chances.

Lack of clutch scoring frustrating Maple Leafs

“God, I’m very frustrated,” said [Steve Thomas] yesterday after Leafs prepared for yet another crucial game tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Gardens. “I just don’t seem to be breaking for open ice. I’m playing with two great players (Rick Vaive and Peter Ihnacak), but I don’t seem to be fitting in. When I get the puck I don’t know if I should shoot or pass. Leafs show just one victory in their past six games but have played well enough in four of those games to come away with a win. However, failure to take advantage of scoring opportunities, coupled with defensive lapses late in those games, have left them six points behind the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues, who occupy the final two playoff spots behind the front-running Detroit Red Wings and second-place Minnesota North Stars. Blue line banter: Defenceman Bill Root is expected back in the lineup tonight after missing the last seven games with a hand injury . . . Rick Lanz played a strong game against the Blues. He was Leafs’ best defenceman with partner Todd Gill a close second . . . Chris Kotsopoulos, whom Leafs miss drastically on defence, is still some time away from returning to the lineup.

Steels Hits Game-Winner, Stakes Claim With Padres

The Padres have signed all their players with less than three years’ experience. Third baseman Kevin Mitchell ($115,000) and pitcher Lance McCullers ($120,000) both signed Friday. . . . Center fielder Stan Jefferson (hand injury) swung off a batting tee and should be ready to play next week when the Padres are in Phoenix. . . . Manager [Larry Bowa] praised pitchers Lance McCullers and Craig Lefferts. McCullers gave up one hit in two innings and struck out three. Lefferts pitched two innings of no-hit ball and also struck out three. . . . Carmelo Martinez started in left field for the Padres, and on the first fly ball his way, some fans said, “Oh no!” But Martinez made the catch, and the crowd applauded loudly. . . . Mitchell, whose fielding is a question mark, had only one ground ball hit his way Friday, and he handled it cleanly. He also hit a single. . . . Only one Angel, Ruppert Jones, tried stealing on Padre catcher Benito Santiago and Santiago threw him out easily. . . . Fans at Desert Sun Stadium began chanting, “Sign Tim Raines. Sign Tim Raines.” Ballard Smith, the Padre president, was in attendance. . . . In a “B” game earlier, the Padres beat the Angels. 7-0.

Toros Favored in Tough League Baseball Coach Calls CCAA Tougher Than Last Year

If that is true, says Toros Coach Andy Lopez, then his team better have seat belts, crash helmets and lots of bandages and aspirin on hand. As coach of the defending league champ and the nation’s sixth-rated team, Lopez’s crowned head is certainly uneasy, despite the Toros’ 15-7 start. Lopez also thinks [Jon Beuder] has All-American capabilities. In 14 games since returning from the hand injury the senior is batting .390 with 3 homers and 15 RBI. The other leading hitter is [Mike Perryman], who is solid at short and is hitting .397, top mark among the regulars. “He’s replacing a first-team All-American, and that’s kind of tough,” Lopez said. “He’s doing a good job.” [Chris Haslock], a transfer from Valley College where he was a junior college All-American, has pitched in 11 games, winning three and saving four with a 1.77 ERA. [Dennis Brady] has gotten off shakily but is 1-0 in eight appearances. The submariner Haslock has made the Toros almost a sure lock in the late innings. The team in 12-1 in games in which it held the lead in the seventh inning. Lopez said Haslock turned down the San Francisco Giants last year but will probably be drafted again this year.

North Stars breeze by Leafs; Wings lose

Devils 8, Rangers 2: Pat Verbeek scored his second career hat trick and linemate Aaron Broten and Kirk Muller each had five points as New Jersey won at New York. The Rangers lost Tomas Sandstrom with a hand injury early in the third period. The victory broke the Devils’ three-game losing streak against the Rangers and gave them the season series with a 4-3-0 mark. The loss left the Rangers four points ahead of Pittsburgh in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Patrick Division. [Mark Pavelich], in his seventh game since being signed as a free agent March 9, scored his second goal as a North Star at 18:41 of the first period. Pavelich made it 2-0 at 1:10 of the second period, lifting a pass from Dino Cicarelli past Ken Wregget to cap a 2-on-1 break. [Brad Maxwell] put Minnesota up 3-0 at 3:41, with Ciccarelli getting his third assist. [Bob Brooke] improved the lead to 4-0 at 7:32 with a slapshot from the top of the right wing faceoff circle that chased Wregget and gave the North Stars all the goals they needed.

THE OTHER GREEN MACHINE SUPERSTAR PAT BRADLEY IS AT THE TOP OF HER CAREER. AS THE LPGA GUIDE PUTS IT, ”NO OTHER PLAYER HAS DOMINATED THE ’80S AS BRADLEY HAS DONE.”

[Nancy Lopez] and Bradley are 1-2 or 2-1 on the LPGA tour. They are what [Walter Hagen] and [Gene Sarazen] were in their era, or [Ben Hogan] and Snead in the next era, or Nicklaus and Palmer, briefly, in the era after that. It did not seem to matter when Nicklaus began to beat Palmer regularly; the media still preferred Palmer, because Palmer has the chemistry of stardom and all Nicklaus could do was win. Lopez has the chemistry and also wins, has won more tournaments than Bradley (35 to Bradley’s 21), and once won five tournaments in a row. Nicklaus and Bradley have one characteristic in common: Both can be very open, friendly in an interview, but do not convey this quality easily in front of a crowd. Palmer is Palmer and Lopez is Lopez, and there is not much Nicklaus or Bradley can do about that. The attention given Lopez by golf fans and the media may bother Bradley — it would only be normal — but she professes not to care. At Boca Raton, the LPGA produced statements by Bradley and Lopez, written in their own hands. Bradley wrote, in part, “It doesn’t bother me that a lot of people think of Nancy and the LPGA as synonymous. I got a lot of coverage last year — it’s not something I dwell on. I have never gone out with the intentions of intimidating anyone.” And Lopez wrote, “A lot of people didn’t really give [PAT BRADLEY] her due credit last year.” Luck has little to do with golf success, unless it’s luck with athletic genes, but Bradley says she is lucky to have a golf swing that doesn’t bother her back or cause hand injuries. “Knock on wood,” she says. Also, she was fortunate to begin the LPGA tour in 1974. “It wasn’t at all like 1986, where growth has been so tremendous. And now these young kids coming up, the pressure of making it happen fast is really on their shoulders. In 1974 the tour wasn’t quite as crowded, and I had a little time to learn as I went along.” For the first round of the Mazda at Boca Raton, Bradley is paired withJane Geddes and Myra Blackwelder. Geddes is only 28, has already won a US Open, hits the ball farther than Bradley, and is one of the many young players who chase the champion. Blackwelder plays right with Geddes and Bradley, is 1 under par, in fact, but tires toward the end of the round, her shots leaking right. Walking seems to tire Blackwelder; she tries to brace the small of her back with her hands. Blackwelder is not only playing against the course and against the field, she is pregnant.

Smithson strains back in exhibition shelling

    # Mark Davidson, Kirby Puckett and Steve Lombardozzi each had two hits for the Twins. Al Newman batted leadoff, walked three times and grounded into a fielder’s choice. [Tom Kelly] said he hasn’t decided whether Newman or Greg Gagne, out with a hand injury, will be the Opening Day shortstop. Billy Sample, meanwhile, isn’t as optimistic that he’ll catch on with another team. “The signs aren’t real good,” said Sample, 32. # Les Straker will pitch today against Mike Scott of the Astros. . . . The Twins played an intrasquad game yesterday in which Gagne played shortstop for one team. . . . David Blakley, 23, the minor leaguer received by the Twins in the Dan Gladden trade, was 3-5 with a 2.35 ERA for Class A Clinton of the Midwest League. He had 82 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings.

    SPORTS SHORTS

FIRST BASE – The right side of the Toronto infield let the Blue Jays down badly in terms of run production last year. And much has been made of the fact that Willie Upshaw’s home run and RBI numbers have shrunk alarmingly from year to year, down to nine homers and 60 RBIs in 1986. The big difference between the 1986 and 1987 Blue Jays, at first base, is that if – perish the thought – Willie can’t get it together, BIG Fred McGriff (seven homers, 15 RBIs in 14 Grapefruit League games), is ready, willing and able to pick up the slack. DESIGNATED HITTER – Cliff Johnson’s 15 homers and 55 RBIs were an asset last year. But, plagued by a hand injury, he hit just .175 after the all-star break. New lefthanded DH [Rance Mulliniks] hit a torrid .466 during the spring, and there aren’t many platoon players in the majors who make better contact. With Fred McGriff also available for lefthanded DH duty, this spot is solid. SHORT RELIEF – The best in the American League. I know Dave Righetti posted a record 46 saves with the Yankees last year. But would you trade the Jays’ short relief tandem of Tom Henke and Mark Eichhorn even up for Righetti? The league hit .192 off Eichhorn, .191 off Henke. They won 23 games between them, saved 37 others, and posted a combined 2.32 ERA in 248 innings. This is a stopper tandem you win world champiomships with.

STARTING OVER; Once the team of the ’80′s, the Expos begin the ’87 season as Team Question Mark. . .

Even [Murray Cook], the Expos’ general manager, stops short of saying his Expos will be contenders in the National League East. After all, the Expos finished fourth last year, 29 1/2 games behind the New York Mets. The Big Owe is average in outfield dimensions, although the 12-foot wall is the highest in the N.L. Nobody knows how the new roof will affect the flight of potential home-run balls. In any case the Expos, with a lot of fly-ball pitchers, want outfielders who can go get the baseball. That has meant giving up some clout. Unlike most teams, the Expos have all their power in the infield – [Andres Galarraga], [Hubie Brooks], [Tim Wallach] – so don’t look for a slugging team. The Expos popped just 14 ‘dingers’ all spring. Galarraga has impressive home run power and Wallach has his hot streaks. But Brooks, especially since his hand injury, figures to be more of an average hitter.
