Bruin Journal Simmer, ironman all season, sidelined by hand injury
The Bruins feared Simmer had fractured the wrist, but X-rays proved otherwise. “I jammed it against the boards,” said Simmer, the only member of the Bruins to play in all 80 games during the regular season. “I was taking someone out behind the net and I spun off and got my hand caught on the glass, and the thumb pulled away.” GEOFF COURTNALL took over the left-wing position normally occupied by Simmer on the line with KEN LINSEMAN and CAM NEELY. The Bruins also sat out DWIGHT FOSTER and replaced him with center BOB SWEENEY.

Brooks sidelined at least 1 month
[Brooks], who missed half of last season with a left-hand injury, was hit by a Danny Darwin pitch in the eighth inning Friday night. The ball cracked the ulnar styloid, the bump of bone on the little-finger side of the wrist. Manager Buck Rodgers moved Tim Wallach into the cleanup spot in the batting order. Infielder Luis Rivera, recalled from Indianapolis to take Brooks’s roster spot, will platoon with Tom Foley at shortstop, Rodgers said. Brooks becomes the fourth Expo on the disabled list, along with [Bryn Smith], catcher Mike Fitzgerald and reliever Tim Burke.

Canada finishes Finns, advances to medal round
Canada never allowed the Finns to established any momentum in the game, jumping into a 3-0 lead in the first 10:47 of the game. They built the bulge to five before the Finns rallied for their two goals. But two Canadian goals in the third period killed any comeback hopes. [Sean Burke] is perhaps the best young goalie prospect in the game but, at 20, has some areas that need work, notably playing and handling the puck. With almost a decade of pro hockey behind him, [Bob Froese] is strong in those areas, notably clearing the puck from the goal area and blocking passout attempts. Of concern to the Canadians is the hand injury to defenceman Scott Stevens. He stopped a shot on the back of his duke Friday against the Soviets and, while x-rays reveal no broken bones, the pain was so severe he couldn’t grip his stick in last night’s warmup. The hand is in a Fibreglas cast but with two days to recuperate, Stevens hopes to play Wednesday. Bruce Driver was a strong replacement for Stevens against the Finns.

Texas A&M’s Randy Barnes will throw the shot for the first time this year in Sunday’s Dr Pepper/Houston Invitational track meet at Robertson Stadium. Barnes was sidelined by a hand injury after throwing 71 feet, 9 1/2 inches last year, best ever by a Southwest Conference performer and collegiate freshman. Sprinters Carl Lewis, Kark Baptiste, Joe DeLoach and Mark Witherspoon, pole vaulter Billy Olson and long jumper Andre Ester are among other entries. Field events start at 11 a.m., and the first running event is at 1:30 p.m. TALLADEGA, Ala. – Bill Venturini set a series qualifying record as he outran Tracy Read to win the pole position for Saturday’s ARCA 500-kilometer stock car race at Alabama International Motor Speedway. Venturini, driving a Chevrolet, covered the 2.66-mile, high-banked track at an average speed of 205.432 mph, a bit better than the 205.111 by Read in another Chevrolet.

PRO BOWLERS OFFER WINNING TIPS
Buy your own ball and shoes, and make sure the ball is drilled by a professional. A poor grip not only lowers scores, it also could lead to serious hand injuries. Nelson Burton Jr.: “It’s almost impossible to maximize your scoring potential without a urethane ball. It has more grip to it. It hits the pins harder. It’s more resilient. It’s just tuned in better to today’s lane conditions than a rubber or polyester ball.” [Marshall] Holman: “If you’re really serious about bowling, you should get more than one ball. I’d suggest a hooking urethane ball and a straight urethane ball. I know that’s expensive, but the investment will be well worth it when your game improves.”

The Goose back in the pen for Padres
“We haven’t had many leads this season. When we get ahead late in a game, there’s just that much more pressure to hold it. The way this team is going, every error and every bad pitch is magnified. When things are going well, you can make an error or a bad pitch and get away with it.” o o o [Gossage]‘s availability was quickly tempered by an injury to left fielder Kevin Mitchell, who slipped on the bullpen mound while catching Mike LaValliere’s foul fly in the second inning. Two teammates carried Mitchell off the field to the trainers’ room for examination. He has a lower left hamstring pull, and his status is day-to-day … To make room for Gossage, the Padres sent right-hander Ed Wojna to Las Vegas. Wojna was 0-3 with a 5.89 earned-run average … Outfielder Stan Jefferson (ankle injury) and reserve catcher Bruce Bochy (hand injury) remain on the disabled list but both should come off some time this week. o o o Rookie catcher Benito Santiago was 0-for-3 last night after having thrown out four of the last five runners who had attempted to steal, going into last night.

Two of them – Dag Wennlund in the javelin and James Lott in the high jump – won SWC titles a year ago. Wennlund, Lott and long jumper Eric Metcalf are defending NCAA title-holders. The Mustangs, defending NCAA outdoor champions, will be without shot-putter Lars Nilsen, winner of last year’s NCAA title. Nilsen has been declared academically ineligible for the rest of the season. A&M’s Randy Barnes seems back on target in the shot put. He didn’t compete in the event at last year’s championships because of a hand injury. BRIEFS.
– Evander Holyfield knocked Rickey Parkey down twice before stopping him in the third round to win the International Boxing Federation cruiserweight title in Las Vegas. Parkey was on his way down for the third time in the round when referee Davey Pearl moved in to stop the fight at 2 minutes 44 seconds of the round. Holyfield (15-0) also holds the World Boxing Association’s title in the junior heavyweight division, the WBA’s version of the 190-pound weight class. . . . Lee Roy Murphy’s scheduled match on the undercard of the Holyfield-Parkey fight was canceled when Murphy suffered the recurrence of a hand injury. Murphy injured his left hand last month in his victory over Bobby Crabtree, and the hand swelled again this week. . . . A Wayne County (Mich.) court has issued a temporary restraining order preventing the IBF from stripping Thomas Hearns of his No. 1-contender status in its middleweight division. The IBF took the action after Hearns failed to tell it whether he would accept a purse offer by a promoter for a fight between him and No. 2 contender Michael Olajide. Hearns’ attorney said his client was not notified of the offer. — The National Hockey League banned Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ed Hospodar for the rest of the playoffs and fined the Flyers and Montreal Canadiens a total of $24,500 for the brawl preceding Game 6 of the Wales Conference finals. Executive Vice President Brian O’Neill announced fines of $500 to players who returned to the ice from their dressing rooms. The fight occurred Thursday night before the Flyers’ 4-3 triumph that sent them to the Stanley Cup finals. . . . Bengt Gustafsson has decided to return to the Washington Capitals after spending last season as captain of the the Swedish national team that won the world championship, according to a report in Saturday’s Washington Post. The paper said Gustafsson, 29, has accepted a two- year contract worth close to a million dollars.

Mack called up as likely regular in center
Yesterday, before [Shane Mack] even had made his major-league debut against Philadelphia in a game the Padres lost, 6-4, [Larry Bowa] said he has tabbed the 23-year-old right-handed hitter to assume duties as one of the Padres’ regulars. “Once Tony Gwynn gets back (from a hand injury), I look at our outfield as being Gwynn in right, Mack in center and Stanley Jefferson in left,” Bowa said. The manager said that John Kruk, who has been playing left field, will go into a pinch-hitting role, with occasional starts in the outfield. Mack arrived here yesterday from Class AAA Las Vegas after being called up to replace Steve Garvey on the Padres’ roster. Mack went 0-for-2 in his major-league debut, striking out the first two times up and walking the next two. He scored one run.

Hand injuries increase in summer
Hand injuries increase in the summer time, largely as a result of outdoor sporting activities, says a Chicago hand surgeon. For example, says Dr. Michael Jablon, of Michael Reese Hospital, sometimes “golfers will come down and through on a swing, smashing the club into the ground instead of hitting the ball. Shock waves can shoot up the club shaft and into the heel of the palm, sometimes causing an immediate fracture of the wrist bone so severe it can only be corrected by surgery.” In a report in the American Journal of Psychiatry, Drs. Gary Gelber and Howard Schatz say a study of 32 people, aged 25 to 62, who had suffered the eye disorder, found 91 per cent of them had a very distressing experience shortly before. One patient found her husband in bed with a niece; another, a journalist , was imprisoned in a foreign country for a week. The doctors suggest that stressful events cause sudden surges of blood pressure that could make fluid leak from tiny blood vessels behind the retina, starting a series of events that lead to detachment of the retina.

BASEBALL. Notes.
– Boston Red Sox general manager Lou Gorman has refused to confirm a report that the team has been trying to trade first baseman Bill Buckner. The Boston Herald quoted an unnamed American League general manager, who was asked whether Don Baylor and Buckner had been mentioned in trade talks. “No (on Baylor) and yes (on Buckner),” the general manager said. “I’ve just heard casual mention they’d probably like to do something with (Buckner).” — The San Francisco Giants have signed Milt Wilcox to a Triple-A contract. Wilcox, released last year by Seattle, was pitching in a semipro league outside Detroit, in which he had given up six home runs in 13 innings. — The Kansas City Royals have sent shortstop Buddy Biancalana to their Triple-A farm team in Omaha. Pitcher John Davis has been called up. Catcher Jamie Quirk, who suffered a hand injury when hit by a pitch two weeks ago, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. Biancalana was hitting .213 with 1 home run and 7 runs batted in for Kansas City in 37 games. It is his first minor-league assignment since 1984. — Reds manager Pete Rose figures his team can’t afford to do without baseball’s all-time hit leader with a pennant drive looming. So he’s getting ready to play again.

Grant may be off team, champ Hilton honored
The CABA advised [Otis Grant] last Monday he would have to defeat Egerton Marcus in a 75-kg box-off bout tomorrow in Toronto – Marcus’s hometown – to earn a berth on the Pan-Am team. The Quebec Amateur Boxing Federation requested a week’s postponment to allow Grant more time to prepare but the request was denied by the CABA. Grant won two preliminary bouts in Ottawa to qualify for the title bout against defending-champion Marcus. Under CABA rules, Grant had to defeat Marcus twice to qualify for the Pan-Am team. However a hand injury prevented Marcus from fighting. Grant, 19, was given two victories by disqualification.

Quebec boxers won’t boycott Pan-Ams
MONTREAL (CP) – Quebec members of Canada’s national boxing team will not boycott the Pan-American Games, but they will not attend the squad’s training camp to protest the omission of a Montreal fighter, provincial boxing association head Gaby Mancini said yesterday. [Grant] won two preliminary bouts in Ottawa before having to face [Egerton Marcus]. A champion must be defeated twice in box-offs before losing his title, but Marcus was unable to fight in Ottawa because of a hand injury, and Grant was awarded a pair of victories by walkover. The Quebec federation is seeking an injunction against CABA to get Grant placed on the team. The request will be heard today in Quebec Superior Court in Montreal.

TUCKER’S HAND INJURY DARKENS HIS BLEAK HOPES AGAINST TYSON
It’s not as if Tony Tucker, the International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion, doesn’t have enough problems. For one, he’s scheduled to face the punishing fists of World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Mike Tyson Saturday at the Las Vegas Hilton (8:30 p.m., HBO) in a fight to unify the heavyweight title for the first time in almost a decade. The 6-foot-5-inch Tucker also is unbeaten at 35-0, but his 30 knockouts have been over lesser opponents. He’s coming into the bout as one of the biggest underdogs in heavyweight title fight history, currently listed at 12-1 by most Las Vegas oddsmakers.

Court ruling stuns young boxer
Toronto boxer Egerton Marcus last night called a Quebec Superior Court decision that will prevent him from competing in the Pan Am Games in Indianapolis “the biggest setback of my career. I even considered turning professional.” Marcus won the national championship in the spring but, because of a hand injury, he was unable to compete in a subsequent box-off when challengers meet each other for a crack at the champion. Grant earned that opportunity in the box-off and, when Marcus was unable to fight, Grant was awarded a walkover (win). There are more setbacks for Marcus because of this decision. The North American championships are being staged in Toronto later this month but in order to compete, an athlete must win a gold or a silver medal at the Pan Am Games.

Pan-Ams offer test for some
[Roger Jackson] notes that in other sports, such as volleyball, basketball and boxing, many of the world’s top teams are from the Americas and will be at the Pan-Ams. The legal battle started in May at the Pan-Am trials when champion Egerton Marcus could not defend his title against [Otis Grant] because of a hand injury. A champion cannot lose his title unless he is defeated twice, but under CABA rules, an absence because of injury is the same as a no-show, and Grant won two fights by walkover. The CABA subsequently ordered a box-off between the two fighter which Grant refused because of the short notice. The QABF has been fighting on behalf of Grant ever since.
