FROM LIFE NEAR TOP TO LIFE IN PRISON
Three years ago, Bennie Heard was one fight away from a shot at the U.S. Olympic boxing team. Heard’s boxing career was born of boredom; he started doing pushups and situps and running the streets of Elberton, Ga., hoping to go to the Olympics. He had no experience, no trainer, no gym, no sparring partner. The two-time U.S. Amateur Boxing Association light heavyweight champion was prevented by a hand injury from fighting Evander Holyfield, the current World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champ, in the 1984 U.S. Olympic trials. After surgery, Heard turned pro, signing a $350,000 deal with a cable television network.

NL INSIDER
RF Darryl Strawberry, hit by a pitch Saturday and out with a stiff neck Sunday, returned to the lineup Monday. … The METS are 10-4 in a span of 20 games against NL East opponents. … Strawberry (27 HR, 21 SB) and 3B Howard Johnson (27 HR, 23 SB) are the NL’s first teammates to have 20-20 seasons since the Cincinnati Reds’ Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson in 1963. Last season in the AL, the Detroit Tigers had 20-20 teammates in Alan Trammell and Kirk Gibson. 1B Jack Clark walked twice Monday to set a league record by drawing a walk in 16 consecutive games. Darrell Evans had held the mark of 15, set in 1976 with Atlanta. Pittsburgh has ample reason to pitch around Clark, who has 34 HRs and 85 RBI against the Pirates in his career. … CARDINALS OF John Morris is day-to-day with a bruised hip after crashing into the OF wall in Philadelphia Sunday. … 2B Tommy Herr needs one stolen base to tie Pepper Martin (147) for 10th place on the all-time Cardinals list. 1B Will Clark was named NL Player of the Week for Aug. 3-9. Clark hit .440 with five HRs and 10 RBI in seven games. Clark’s 25 HRs are the most by a GIANTS’ player since Darrell Evans hit 30 in 1983. … 3B Kevin Mitchell had an anti-inflammatory injection in his right hand Monday and was not in the starting lineup. Mitchell, who has been playing with a bruised right thumb, aggravated the hand injury swinging at a high pitch in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Hand injury pulls Puckett out of starting lineup
Kirby Puckett was kept out of the starting lineup Saturday because of a bruised hand suffered when he was hit by a Mike Morgan pitch in the eighth inning Friday. But Puckett was available for pinch-hitting duties and is expected back in the lineup today. Twins trainer Dick Martin said he initially feared Puckett might have suffered a broken hand, but x-rays proved negative. Martin said Puckett would have missed at least five weeks if he had suffered a fracture. # Reviews of Joe Niekro’s performance on Friday’s Late Night With David Letterman show ranged from great to that offered by manager Tom Kelly. Niekro appeared to explain his 10-day suspension for throwing scuffed baseballs Aug. 3 against California.

BUSH MAY PLUG SEAHAWKS’ HOLE AT CENTER — BUSH SATISFIES EVEN HIMSELF
All summer the center’s spot has been a focal point of apprehension for the Seattle Seahawks. The middle of the Hawks’ offensive line was just as tender as Blair Bush’s left knee. Bush was in his ninth straight year as a National Football League starter when he went down seven games into the 1986 season. Surgery followed, then the long rehabilitation period. So, when Bush pronounced himself disappointed with his limited action last week against St. Louis and [Stan] Eisenhooth was sidelined for at least a month with a hand injury sustained in practice, the situation at center looked desperate enough for the Hawks to bring Will Grant, whom they involuntarily retired in the off-season, back to Seattle for a physical.

NO MORE MR. NICE GUY FOR COLTS’ TRUDEAU
For Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Jack Trudeau, the 1987 National Football League season is starting out as an instant replay of 1986. With starting quarterback Gary Hogeboom sidelined because of a hand injury, Trudeau again becomes the Colts’ No. 1 quarterback. Trudeau, who entered the Colts’ 1986 huddle as a frightened rookie with little confidence and even less knowledge, says he’s a changed man, with a more combative, self-assured and gung-ho attitude.

Linking Fitness Activities to Rehabilitation
Walbro Corp. reduced its workers compensation costs by more than 50% between 1985 and 1986, even though its workforce grew by 11%. Walbro (Cass City, Michigan) employs 1,600 people worldwide, 900 of them at 3 Michigan plants that manufacture fuel system components and small engine carburetors. A survey by Athletic Training Services Inc. (ATS) found a prevalence of upper body and hand injuries in the light manufacturing operations, while lower back incidents were common at Walbro’s one foundry. ATS concluded that a rehabilitation program was feasible. Certified athletic trainers, using techniques common in sports medicine, supervise Walbro’s rehabilitation and fitness programs. The health-fitness center at the plant site is equipped with weight-lifting devices, a whirlpool, and a paraffin and mineral bath, among other things. Only injuries that occurred at the workplace are treated during normal working hours. Although no incentives are offered for participating in health and fitness sponsored programs, the participation rate stays above 40%. In addition to reduced absenteeism due to injuries, Walbro has benefited from a 2.6% drop in sickness and accident payments.

Herzog shuffles Cards for NL pennant run
Infielder Rod Booker, first baseman Mike Laga and right-handed pitcher Randy O’Neal will come up in September, but probably not until Louisville finishes with the American Association playoffs. The filling of St. Louis’ 23rd and 24th post-season spots probably depends on how helpful [Dan Driessen] is the next month, how completely Ford recovers from the hand injury that shelved him, how much and how well [Lee Tunnell] can pitch in September, and how strongly [Whitey Herzog] esteems [Tom Lawless] as a good-luck charm. [Steve Peters] had a 0.95 earned run average for about 20 relief innings with Louisville, following his 23-save blitz of the Texas League for the Arkansas Travelers. The Cardinals first sent for him Aug. 10 but returned him to Louisville a week later after he threw 5 2/3 innings in four games. During that quick trial, he allowed one run, eight hits and two walks, while striking out four.

PRO FOOTBALL ’87 For a Change, Bengals Start With a Win Esiason and Brooks Lead Cincinnati Past Indianapolis, 23-21
With Boomer Esiason passing for two touchdowns and the Bengals’ defense coming up with two fourth-quarter interceptions, Cincinnati beat the Indianapolis Colts, 23-21, to win its first opener since 1982. Esiason completed 17 of 26 passes for 236 yards, including touchdown passes of 61 yards to tight end Rodney Holman and 18 yards to running back James Brooks, who also scored on a 1-yard run with 7:50 remaining to give Cincinnati a 23-14 lead. [Jack Trudeau], playing in place of Gary Hogeboom, who suffered a preseason hand injury, completed 13 of 23 passes for 206 yards and threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Tim Sherwin with 2:33 left. Cincinnati recovered the ensuing onside kick but could not run out the clock. However, [Robert Jackson]‘s second interception settled the outcome.

Raitt records with Prince, revives career
Tasteless line from Bill Madlock of Detroit Tigers, who claims he acquired a hand injury while throwing the body block that finished the season for Jays’ Tony Fernandez: When Madlock was asked if he thought about the injury to Fernandez, he replied: “Fernandez? At least I’m still playing.” . . . The Tigers’ peerless radio broadcaster, Ernie Harwell, is the only baseball voice ever to be “traded” for a player . . . Back in 1948, Harwell was calling the games of the minor league Atlanta Crackers but his ability attracted national attention. When Brooklyn Dodgers broadcaster Red Barber developed an ulcer, Dodgers president Branch Rickey asked the Crackers to release Harwell from his contract to replace Barber. The Crackers said they would if Rickey sent them minor league catcher Cliff Dapper to fill a hole in their lineup . . . Because the Dodgers had a prospect of some promise named Roy Campanella, they agreed and Harwell was in the majors . . . Harwell also is a songwriter and he contributed the lyrics to Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head . . . Houston Astros lost 23 of their last 26 road games and a top advance scout for another team claims a reluctance to scuff baseballs on the road was a big reason for the skid. The balls go to the home team’s dugout where they can be inspected. The Astro pitchers, led by ace Mike Scott, have the reputation as the game’s top doctors of baseballs.

Fuller’s passing helps Redmen clinch second
[Bryan Fuller], who has nursed a throwing hand injury or two most of the season, did not produce startling numbers, but he did throw for one touchdown and ran for another. He completed 12 of 19 for 171 yards with only one interception. He easily could have been 14 of 19 but for a dropped ball and perfectly thrown deep lob against a stiff breeze to Claude Bourgeois that was ruled out of bounds, though McGill argued Bourgeois was pushed out. The [Redmen] were leading 1-0 on a booming, wind-aided punt into touch by Chuck Petitpas when Fuller moved them 66 yards in eight plays. The last was a 21-yard scamper by Fuller himself. A 36-yard Fuller to [Mike Soles] pass-and-run play set up a 29-yard field goal by Petitpas to boost McGill’s lead to 11-8 and after a pair of singles off wide field-goal attemps by Connie Mandala made it 11-10 at halftime, that was as close as the Gaels were to get.
