Chambers Witnesses Attack Prosecution’s Account of Slaying

The second witness, a photographic analyst who specializes in patterns and scale measurements, told the jury that he believed the marks on Miss Levin’s neck were ”mathematically” identical to similar measurements taken from Mr. [Robert E. Chambers Jr.]‘s watchband. The prosecutor, Linda Fairstein, who finished her case on Monday, rejected Mr. Chambers’s account. Prosecution witnesses said that Miss [Jennifer Levin] was strangled from in front, using her blouse as a ”noose,” and that Mr. Chambers’s hand was broken when he punched something solid with a bunched fist. ”It’s very unlikely that a closed fist would cause this,” said Dr. Howard D. Balensweig, the defense’s medical consultant. He told the jury at State Supreme Court in Manhattan that he believed Mr. Chambers’s hand injury could not have left the particular fracture lines revealed in the X-rays if it had been closed in a fist. In addition, he said that the swelling shown on the photographs indicated that the ”maximum trauma” had occured to the side of the hand rather than toward the knuckle, as in a punch.

    Habs pay price for victory

Bad news: Guy Carbonneau and Chris Chelios weren’t around for the third period to watch Brian Skrudland and Mike McPhee provide the Canadiens with their winning margin. Both have hand injuries – with Chelios’s the more severe. The injuries discolored, to some extent, a night’s work which provided the Canadiens with their seventh consecutive victory and an impeccable night’s work for the McPhee-Skrudland-Sergio Momesso line. The injuries to Carbonneau and Chelios were the low points of this game, the work of McPhee-Skrudland-Momesso the high points, but perhaps the strangest part was its chippiness. The Blues and Canadiens don’t normally get involved in the sneaky stuff. They stick to business rather than stick it to each other but,for some reason, tempers flared.

Chelios, Carbonneau injuries turn out to be minor

Chelios and [Guy Carbonneau] missed the third period of Thursday’s 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues to determine the extent of hand injuries they suffered earlier in the game. What the injuries to Carbonneau and Chelios really come down to for tonight’s game against the Kings is that if the medical minds can find some way to ease Chelios’s pain, he’ll play. If they can’t, uh-uh. As it developed, the No. 1 overall Canadiens emerged winners on both counts. X-rays delivered the hopeful reports on the former, and third-period goals by Brian Skrudland and Mike McPhee on the latter. Goaltender Brian Hayward also contributed with a couple of giant-sized saves while the Canadiens were protecting a one-goal lead. Earlier, Hayward had been left slightly shaken after allowing a 60-foot shot by Gino Cavallini to squirt through his legs – a goal which tied the game in the second period. A moment later, the Blues missed an open net.

    RED SOX AT A GLANCE

Question marks — Can No. 3 starter Oil Can Boyd (1-3 record, 5.89 ERA in 7 games), out most of last season, recover from Aug. 21 shoulder surgery and regain 1986 form (16-10 record, 3.78 ERA)? Can [Rich Gedman], who missed spring training and first month of play, become the Gedman of 1986 (.258 avg., 16 HR, 65 RBI)? Can 35-year-old left fielder Jim Rice (.277 avg., 13 HR, 62 RBI) recover from surgery on both knees last October and do what he did in 1986 (.324 avg., 20 HR, 110 RBI)? Can Jeff Sellers (7-8 record, 5.28 ERA) live up to his potential to become needed fourth starter? Will veteran right- hander Bob Stanley (4-15 record, 5.01 ERA) mend from winter hand injury and help set up saves for [Lee Smith]? Can rookie center fielder Brady Anderson (.294 avg., 6 HR, 35 RBI at Class AA New Britain; .380 avg., 2 HR, 8 RBI at Class AAA Pawtucket) do job until injured [Ellis Burks] returns in May?

    GORMAN OFFERS THREE EXTENSIONS

Red Sox physician Arthur Pappas rolled into town yesterday and granted Bob Stanley permission to throw off the mound. The Steamer, recovering from a severe offseason right hand injury, won’t be allowed to throw in game conditions for quite some time. “The healing process is not as far along as (Stanley) thinks it is,” said Pappas. “He’s optimistic, but we have to monitor this closely.” . . . Pappas termed pitcher Jeff Sellers’ pain in the rear “an inflamed muscle in the buttock.” Sellers threw off the mound under Pappas’ supervision and felt little pain. “No difficulty with extension or follow-through,” said Pappas. “I think he’ll move right along.” . . . Ellis Burks slipped off his removable cast and rode the stationary bike, his first workout since surgery Friday to remove a bone chip from his right ankle. Pappas will check the foot for swelling today and then prescribe Burks’ rehabilitation program.

    Canucks delay inevitable demise

The win – the Canucks’ first since Feb. 21 – kept them mathematically alive in their sputtering bid for fourth place in the Smythe Division. Had they lost Friday, the Canucks would have been eliminated from the playoffs. And a loss or a tie would also have matched the unprecedented 13-game futility string of the 1973-74 Canucks. One ray of hope is that the Canucks’ schedule has them playing four of their remaining five games at home, against opposition not of the quality the Kings must face. It’s a dubious hope, however, because the Canucks have managed only a pitiful 12-19-5 record at home this season. BLUE LINES – Canucks lost right winger Jim Sandlak with a hand injury after he was hit by a shot by King defenceman Tom Laidlaw . . . Canucks won the season series against the Kings (4-3-1) but are 3-16-3 against the rest of the Smythe Division.

Food, diapers to rescue as van found

An 18-hour police search for six missing foster children in a wayward van ended with peanut butter sandwiches and fresh diapers yesterday when the runaways were found safe here. The incident began at about 3:30 p.m. Monday when the foster parents stopped at a Clairemont hospital so that the foster father could have a hand injury examined. The foster mother also got out of the van, with the motor running and the six children — originally from three different families — inside. Deputies responded to this problem and the children’s hunger pangs by purchasing new diapers and fixings for a lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, [Dave Cohen] said. The kids were fed and changed, he said, and formula was prepared for the 8-month-old.

Body of lawyer, 55 not found for 2 days murder trial told

In her opening address to Mr. Justice John O’Driscoll and the jury, [Kathryn Hawke] said [Edwin Howard Kasdan]‘s friend, Alex Ross, was with Kasdan and [Eric Bengt Swanson] on the Saturday, two days before the killing, when they rented a floor sander. She said Swanson had been staying in Toronto at Seaton House on George St. and evidence will show that he was treated for hand injuries at Toronto General Hospital on the day Kasdan was killed. Hawke expects a forensic scientist to match the blood of the accused to that found in Kasdan’s apartment, where there was a trail of blood leading from the bedroom down the hallway to the living room.

Mario’s magic brings Habs’ streak to end

The Canadiens had an awful time of it – Mario Lemieux saw to that. Lemieux scored two goals, giving him 63 for the season, and drove the final nail in the Canadiens’ coffin at 13:27 of the second period while the Penguins were shorthanded. Defenceman Larry Trader brought the Canadiens to within one goal when he blasted a shot by [Steve Guenette] off the power play at 6:59 of the second period. But then Lemieux dropped a bomb when he scored while his team was shorthanded. By now the Canadiens chances were as rare as snow in July and Guenette was stopping the few they had. Stephane Richer missed his third consecutive game last night because of a hand injury incurred during one of his rare fights. Richer was in a slump when he got hurt with one point in five games. Incidentally, when Richer scored his 40th goal – he has 45 now – he became the first Canadiens’ player to reach that plateau since Mats Naslund had 43 during the 1985-86 season. Richer also leads the Canadiens in power-play goals with 14 and game-winners with 11 . . .

Playoffs in reach of Devils | N.J. beats Isles, needs one more

Canadiens 9, Sabres 4 — At Montreal, Stephane Richer started a three-goal, 37-second surge in the first period with the first of his three goals in the Canadiens’ rout of Buffalo. Richer, who earlier this season had a four-goal game, broke a 1-1 tie at 12:19 after deking goalie Darren Puppa. Richer, returning after missing five games because of a hand injury, added a power-play goal at 5:33 of the second to make the score 6-2. Penguins 7, Capitals 6 — Mario Lemieux scored his fourth goal of the game with 58 seconds left in overtime at Landover, Md., to keep Pittsburgh alive in the playoff race. Lemieux broke into the zone from the left side and managed to flip the puck past goaltender Clint Malarchuk while being hauled down by defenseman Larry Murphy.

Houston Rubs Padres’ Noses in Astrodome Rug Despite Enthusiasm, San Diego Is Burned by the Astros in Season Opener

Mark Parent can attest to that. He was a party to his 10th opener Tuesday night, albeit the first nine were in hamlets such as Walla Walla, Reno, Salem, Amarillo, Beaumont and Las Vegas. After a baseball lifetime in such outposts, Houston seems like paradise . . . even indoors. That was the pregame mood. That was before the Padres skinned their knees on that infernal turf . . . or rather pitcher Ed Whitson bruised his hand because of that infernal turf. It went off his hand and temporarily left him with no feeling in his thumb or index finger. He threw in the dirt to first base and Puhl was aboard, awarded a hit because of Whitson’s obvious hand injury. Whitson left the game, and Houston scored five runs before his successors could retire the side. The final score was 6-3.

Red Sox Journal Boyd, frozen out of debut, will pitch tonight in Texas

[JOHN McNAMARA], taking note of the drizzly, 44-degree afternoon, talked it over with [Boyd] before the game and they decided to push back Boyd’s debut by one day, so he can pitch in 80-degree weather in Texas tonight. “I was all psyched to pitch and I did the things I always do when I’m going to pitch, going over their hitters and so forth, but in the back of my mind I knew this might happen because when I was driving to the park from my home in Natick it was raining,” said Boyd, taking the news in stride. [BRADY ANDERSON] (sore right hamstring) was held out at the start yesterday, as JOHN MARZANO, TODD BENZINGER and [KEVIN ROMINE] made their first starts of the season, against left-hander FRANK TANANA, with left-handed hitters [SAM HORN] and RICH GEDMAN getting a rest. [JIM RICE] was the DH . . . BOB STANLEY will go back to Winter Haven, Fla., on Sunday to pitch in the Sox’ extended spring-training games. EXTRA INNINGS

[Lou Gorman] also announced that veteran reliever Bob Stanley, who is on the disabled list recovering from a severe hand injury suffered in a fall at his home in mid-January, will continue his comeback program at the Red Sox’ minor-league complex in Winter Haven, Fla. Stanley, who has been throwing batting practice, will pitch in intrasquad competition. Kevin McReynolds sat out the New York Mets’ game in Montreal due to a twisted knee. McReynolds suffered the injury in the second inning of Wednesday night’s 5-1 loss to the Expos. He continued to play, but his knee stiffened up after the game and he was rested Thursday night by Manager Davey Johnson. McReynolds is hitting .667 with two homers and four RBI in two games this year. His condition is listed as day-to-day. Lee Mazzilli started in left field in his place.

    Notes.

Reliever Lee Smith, acquired from the Cubs in December, has signed a two- year contract through the 1990 season with the Boston Red Sox. Terms weren’t disclosed, but Smith apparently received a sizable pay increase. He received a reported $850,000 last season. Gorman also announced that reliever Bob Stanley, who is on the disabled list recovering from a hand injury suffered in a fall at his home in mid- January, will continue his comeback program at the Red Sox’s minor-league complex in Winter Haven, Fla. Stanley, who has been throwing batting practice, will pitch in intrasquad competition. The Yankees enlarged the Monument Park area in center field during the off-season, moving in the fences and eliminating what had been their bullpen. The Yankees took over the visiting team’s bullpen; Blyleven said the new visitors’ bullpen is obstructed by the outfield fence and doesn’t allow players to watch the game.

Pawsox continue surge with 3-1 victory

Bob Stanley, making his first-ever Triple-A appearance, threw five innings of three-hit ball, leading the Pawsox to a brisk 3-1 win over Richmond and significantly advancing his rehabilitation of an offseason hand injury. For their part, the Pawsox, now 10-8, have won three straight games and five out of their last six, and have completely overcome a sluggish early season start. The Braves scored first, touching Stanley for a run in the fifth. Alex Smith walked and was balked to second when Stanley did not pause during his move out of the stretch. Carlos Rios then drove a 1-and-1 pitch into the right-center field gap, scoring Smith. Rios, trying to stretch the hit into a double, was thrown out at second by right fielder Carlos Quintana to end the inning.
