The second witness, a photographic analyst who specializes in patterns and scale measurements, told the jury that he believed the marks on Miss Levin’s neck were ”mathematically” identical to similar measurements taken from Mr. [Robert E. Chambers Jr.]‘s watchband. The prosecutor, Linda Fairstein, who finished her case on Monday, rejected Mr. Chambers’s account. Prosecution witnesses said that Miss [Jennifer Levin] was strangled from in front, using her blouse as a ”noose,” and that Mr. Chambers’s hand was broken when he punched something solid with a bunched fist. ”It’s very unlikely that a closed fist would cause this,” said Dr. Howard D. Balensweig, the defense’s medical consultant. He told the jury at State Supreme Court in Manhattan that he believed Mr. Chambers’s hand injury could not have left the particular fracture lines revealed in the X-rays if it had been closed in a fist. In addition, he said that the swelling shown on the photographs indicated that the ”maximum trauma” had occured to the side of the hand rather than toward the knuckle, as in a punch.

Bad news: Guy Carbonneau and Chris Chelios weren’t around for the third period to watch Brian Skrudland and Mike McPhee provide the Canadiens with their winning margin. The injuries discolored, to some extent, a night’s work which provided the Canadiens with their seventh consecutive victory and an impeccable night’s work for the McPhee-Skrudland-Sergio Momesso line. Earlier, Hayward had been left slightly shaken after allowing a 60-foot shot by Gino Cavallini to squirt through his legs – a goal which tied the game in the second period. Red Sox physician Arthur Pappas rolled into town yesterday and granted Bob Stanley permission to throw off the mound. The Steamer, recovering from a severe offseason right hand injury, won’t be allowed to throw in game conditions for quite some time. “The healing process is not as far along as (Stanley) thinks it is,” said Pappas. “He’s optimistic, but we have to monitor this closely.” . . . Pappas termed pitcher Jeff Sellers’ pain in the rear “an inflamed muscle in the buttock.” Sellers threw off the mound under Pappas’ supervision and felt little pain. “No difficulty with extension or follow-through,” said Pappas. “I think he’ll move right along.” . . . Ellis Burks slipped off his removable cast and rode the stationary bike, his first workout since surgery Friday to remove a bone chip from his right ankle. Pappas will check the foot for swelling today and then prescribe Burks’ rehabilitation program.

An 18-hour police search for six missing foster children in a wayward van ended with peanut butter sandwiches and fresh diapers yesterday when the runaways were found safe here. The incident began at about 3:30 p.m. Monday when the foster parents stopped at a Clairemont hospital so that the foster father could have a hand injury examined. The foster mother also got out of the van, with the motor running and the six children — originally from three different families — inside. Deputies responded to this problem and the children’s hunger pangs by purchasing new diapers and fixings for a lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, [Dave Cohen] said. The kids were fed and changed, he said, and formula was prepared for the 8-month-old.

She said Swanson had been staying in Toronto at Seaton House on George St. and evidence will show that he was treated for hand injuries at Toronto General Hospital on the day Kasdan was killed. Hawke expects a forensic scientist to match the blood of the accused to that found in Kasdan’s apartment, where there was a trail of blood leading from the bedroom down the hallway to the living room.

The Canadiens had an awful time of it – Mario Lemieux saw to that. Lemieux scored two goals, giving him 63 for the season, and drove the final nail in the Canadiens’ coffin at 13:27 of the second period while the Penguins were shorthanded. Defenceman Larry Trader brought the Canadiens to within one goal when he blasted a shot by [Steve Guenette] off the power play at 6:59 of the second period. But then Lemieux dropped a bomb when he scored while his team was shorthanded. By now the Canadiens chances were as rare as snow in July and Guenette was stopping the few they had. Stephane Richer missed his third consecutive game last night because of a hand injury incurred during one of his rare fights. Richer was in a slump when he got hurt with one point in five games. Incidentally, when Richer scored his 40th goal – he has 45 now – he became the first Canadiens’ player to reach that plateau since Mats Naslund had 43 during the 1985-86 season. Richer also leads the Canadiens in power-play goals with 14 and game-winners with 11 . . .

Richer, returning after missing five games because of a hand injury, added a power-play goal at 5:33 of the second to make the score 6-2. Penguins 7, Capitals 6 — Mario Lemieux scored his fourth goal of the game with 58 seconds left in overtime at Landover, Md., to keep Pittsburgh alive in the playoff race. He threw in the dirt to first base and Puhl was aboard, awarded a hit because of Whitson’s obvious hand injury. Whitson left the game, and Houston scored five runs before his successors could retire the side. The final score was 6-3.

He continued to play, but his knee stiffened up after the game and he was rested Thursday night by Manager Davey Johnson. McReynolds is hitting .667 with two homers and four RBI in two games this year. His condition is listed as day-to-day. Lee Mazzilli started in left field in his place.

For their part, the Pawsox, now 10-8, have won three straight games and five out of their last six, and have completely overcome a sluggish early season start. The Braves scored first, touching Stanley for a run in the fifth. Alex Smith walked and was balked to second when Stanley did not pause during his move out of the stretch. Carlos Rios then drove a 1-and-1 pitch into the right-center field gap, scoring Smith. Thai challenger Khaokor Galaxy captured the World Boxing Association bantamweight title in Bangkok, Thailand, overcoming an open cut above his right eye to defeat Wilfredo Vasquez of Puerto Rico in a split decision. The victory made Khaokor and his twin brother, Khaosai, the WBA world junior bantamweight champion, the first twins ever to hold simultaneous world boxing crowns.
