Fighter Christensen Says Opener Will Be Toughest

The Great Plains team’s 165-pound entry in next week’s National Golden Gloves at the City Auditorium said he tends to be a slow starter in tournaments. Christensen said his slow-starting pattern held true during the Midwest regional here in March. He said he wasn’t pleased with his three-round decision victory over Omaha’s Mike Kirby in their first-round match. Christensen, a four-time Midwest champion, came close to a national title in 1986 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He had to default in the 156-pound final to three-time champ Mylon Watkins of Las Vegas, Nev., after suffering a hand injury in the semifinals.

Central City Boxer Gears for Fast Start

Christensen, a 24-year-old Central City, Neb., farmer, needs a good performance on opening night next week. He said he tends to be a slow starter in tournaments. Christensen said his slow-starting pattern held true during the Midwest regional here in March. He said he wasn’t pleased with his three-round decision victory over Omaha’s Mike Kirby in their first-round match. Christensen, a five-time Midwest champion, came close to a national title in 1986 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. `CHEF’ SERVES A WELL-TRAVELED PLATTER — 198-FOOT THROW MAKES FEIDER STATE FAVORITE

[Pat] Feider has consistently tossed the discus in the 190-foot range to rank as one of the top high-school throwers in the nation. His 198-foot toss in the North Puget Sound League meet a week and a half ago stands as the all-time state best and makes him the clear favorite to defend his state title at this weekend’s Class AAA meet in Tacoma’s Lincoln Bowl. Feider also has cracked the 60-foot mark in the shot put to etch his name among the state’s elite, but a hand injury might prevent him from sweeping both events Friday and Saturday. Feider, in fact, might end up scratching from the shot, depending on how his right hand feels after a couple of warmup tosses. The injury, which he suffered during the NPSL meet, has been diagnosed as either tendinitis or a possible stress fracture in the thumb area. It does not affect his discus throw, but has seriously impaired his distance in the shot. At last weekend’s West Central District meet, Feider’s best was just 54-3 1/2, good for fourth place.

HE’S COME A LONG WAY FROM `FRISBEE’ DAYS — HAZEN’S FEIDER OWNS ALL-TIME BEST DISCUS TOSS

At nearly 6 feet 6 inches, 230 pounds, [Pat] Feider no longer gets pushed aside. Instead, he’s the No. 1 high-school discus thrower in state history. Despite an injury to his right hand that may keep him out of the shot-put competition, he remains the overwhelming favorite to successfully defend his discus title Saturday in the Class AAA meet in Tacoma’s Lincoln Bowl. Feider, already signed by the University of Washington, has flung the discus 198-0 feet this season, an all-time state best. He is expected to break the state-meet record of 184-11 set in 1977 by Rusty Olsen of Lewis & Clark of Spokane. Feider has heaved the shot a state-leading 62-2 1/2, but the hand injury, diagnosed as either tendinitis or a stress fracture in the thumb area, has hampered his shot-putting the past two weeks. Feider finished fourth in the shot at last weekend’s West Central District meet and might scratch out of tomorrow’s event.

MINOR LEAGUES;Myers’ decision helps Blue Jays

This season, the 6-2, 200-pound [Greg Myers] hasn’t been able to throw because of a shoulder muscle injury. But he still can hit. As his shoulder began to improve, Myers reinjured it diving into second base in Buffalo. In 30 games, Myers has six homers, 20 RBI and a .286 average. He is expected back in action in 10 days. Last season, he suffered a hand injury. “It’s very frustrating,” Myers says. Myers was with the Blue Jays last September. When [Ernie Whitt] went down with an injury, Myers filled in during the Blue Jays’ final-weekend showdown for the American League East pennant. The Blue Jays were swept, but Myers learned.

OFF THE MARK Aguirre Finds No Consolation in Coming Close, Shrugs Off Injury

The Mavericks, who lost their 10th straight playoff game at the Forum, also lost [MARK Aguirre] on the first play of the final quarter after he suffered a minor injury to his left hand. Aguirre, the Mavericks’ top scorer, shoots with both hands, using a two-handed release. Aguirre and [Magic Johnson], who are close friends off the court, had a verbal confrontation when they got tangled in the key after Aguirre came back into the game. Aguirre, who felt Magic was holding him, screamed a profanity. PHOTO: Some clever handiwork by Lakers’ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-no foul was called-allows Magic Johnson to dribble past Dallas’ Mark Aguirre . . .; PHOTO: . . . and Aguirre is forced out later with hand injury, causing him to grimace as he holds wrist on bench. Yankees Get 9 in First To Overwhelm Orioles;Murray’s Status in Doubt After 9-2 Loss

It comes at a time when [Eddie Murray] is in the worst slump of his career and the Orioles (12-42) are sliding toward a historically bad season. Murray singled in four at-bats today to raise his average to .231, which the Orioles could live with if he were hitting with power or driving in runs. Murray has refused comment on all subjects, but he’s known to be nursing a hand injury or a severely sore hand. Robinson offered to give him a game off recently, but Murray declined. Robinson said, if he had another first baseman, Murray might be used as a designated hitter “to save his energy and {let him} concentrate on his hitting. It won’t be a long-term thing. Where are you going to go with Eddie Murray sitting on the bench anyway? You may give him a couple of days and hope he gets it going.”

Precision goes beyond guitar for Malmsteen

Oh, well, perhaps a little comeuppance was in order for a guy like Malmsteen, who measures rock ‘n’ roll guitar artistry by such high-falutin’ standards as virtuosity. As if speed and technique – much of his the result of classical training – means a hoot in rock. Apparently it does, and if you believe the assorted biographies and press notices, Malmsteen has inherited the “guitar hero” status once reserved for Jimi Hendrix. He’s a god among men, a genius in a field of no-accounts, the “Bach of rock,” as dubbed by Spin music magazine. The self-titled debut album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental. Readers of the prestigious Guitar Player magazine voted him Best New Talent. With surprisingly little air play, Malmsteen’s subsequent LPs, “Marching Out” and “Trilogy”, showed promising sales, but before he could capitalize with a fourth LP, Malmsteen suffered a paralyzing hand injury in an auto wreck.

Bell’s hand woes not related to bar brawl

Blue Jays agree with [George Bell] and revealed a document – trainer Tommy Craig’s daily injury report log – that shows Bell taking treatment for a minor hand injury less than two weeks into the season. Bell had the hand x-rayed, but the pictures showed nothing. Jays’ daily injury log also shows Bell having x-rays on the hand in New York April 22, three days before the weigh-in ceremonies at Grannon’s thrill house in Saint John.

Hand injury to sideline Royals’ Brett

[Bob Knepper]‘s remarks about the National Organization for Women are in the June 20 issue of Sports Illustrated. “NOW is such a blowhard organization,” Knepper said in the article. “They are a bunch of lesbians. Their focus has nothing to do with women’s rights. It has everything to do with wanting to be men.” Knepper has said the comment was made in jest. VALENZUELA MAY MISS START: Dodgers left-hander Fernando Valenzuela may miss a start for the first time in his eight major league seasons because of the death of his father. Valenzuela is scheduled to pitch the opener of Sunday’s doubleheader against San Diego. He traveled to Echohuaquila, Mexico, when his father died Wednesday after a long bout with cancer. Los Angeles officials told Valenzuela to take off as long as necessary. Valenzuela is 5-5 with a 3.61 ERA and beat Atlanta 5-4 Wednesday. Wearing glasses while pitching for the first time in his career, he threw seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks.

Couples says his weekend outlook just like weather

[Fred Couples], arguably the most carefree player on the tour, shot a 67 to reach the halfway point in a four-way tie at 3-under-par 139. The former Houston Cougar is 4 shots behind leader Scott Simpson. How does an NBA player spend his time now if he’s not involved in the finals? Well, if you’re Larry Bird, you spend your time creating your own gallery at TCC. The Celtics’ forward was following Boston fan Greg Norman around the links until Norman withdrew with a hand injury. Bird broke all known golf-course records for autographs signed … Couples on the 12th at TCC, which features a blind entry shot to the green up a 100-foot break in the terrain: “I can see pins all day long and can’t hit them, so I like not seeing the pin every once in a while. I just pick out a tree and aim for it.” Tyler’s Steve Bowman was probably thinking about packing his bags when he was 4 over par stepping up to the 14th tee Friday evening. But he proceeded to birdie the next four holes to get back to even-par before darkness stopped play. This morning, he was to step up to the 18th tee at 7 a.m. to complete his second round … The Orlando orthopedic surgeon that will tend to Greg Norman’s injured wrist is the same doctor who performed surgery on the shoulder of Boston Red Sox pitcher and Katy resident Roger Clemens.

CHRIS JAMES’ HAND INJURY TURNS OUT TO BE A BAD BRUISE

Greg Norman, who withdrew from the U.S. Open during the second round after suffering a hand injury, was recovering at his home in North Palm Beach, Fla., Saturday. Norman’s next scheduled tournament is the Western Open at Butler National two weeks hence, and a spokesman said it was too early to tell if the Australian would make that tournament. Trevino, one of the fastest players on tour, may have preferred to play alone. With Eger, a former touring pro and now a PGA official, Trevino still finished 18 holes in 3 hours 3 minutes, three holes ahead of the following twosome.

Brenner to Miss Olympics Again After Tearing Tendon

John Brenner said he had been in the best shape of his career. His coach, Art Venegas, said that Brenner had been ready to break the world shotput record. Brenner’s injury is not only a disappointment to him, but it also reduces the United States’ prospects of winning an Olympic medal in the shotput at Seoul next September. Randy Barnes had an auspicious mark of 72-6 1/2 in April at the Mt. San Antonio Relays. He, however, is reportedly bothered by a lingering hand injury. Brenner said that he has heard that Augie Wolf, a 1984 Olympic competitor in the shotput, has a shoulder injury.

SORRY, MCENROE, BUT YOU JUST CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE

Peter Alfano of the New York Times said that when John McEnroe failed to come up with any headline-making quotes after his first round match, an Australian journalist grumbled, “There’s nothing worse than a reformed brat.” — Add Open: It was a sad week for Greg Norman. Not only did he get knocked out of the tournament with a hand injury, but good friend Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics didn’t make it to the NBA Finals. Norman had planned to catch a game at nearby Boston Garden. — Add [Mike] Tyson: From Phil Berger of the New York Times: “Following published reports that Tyson’s wife, Robin Givens, did not attend Harvard Medical School, as she had said, information surfaced that brought into question her version of how she and Tyson came to be married. According to sources close to Tyson, what accelerated the marriage was a phone call that Tyson’s co-manager, Jimmy Jacobs, received from Ruth Roper, Givens’ mother, saying her daughter was 3 1/2 months pregnant.”

CLEMENS MAY MISS START HURLER LIMPING FROM GROIN INJURY SUFFERED FRIDAY NIGHT

Mike Smithson is scheduled to pitch this afternoon (1, Channel 38) in the series finale and Oil Can Boyd will be going in the opener of a three-game set tomorrow night against Cleveland. With Jeff Sellers out with a hand injury and [Roger Clemens]‘ status uncertain, general manager Lou Gorman said yesterday that either Steve Curry or Steve Ellsworth would get the call from Pawtucket for a Tuesday start. If Clemens is unavailable at midweek, that would intensify Gorman’s search for a pitcher outside the organization. Gorman was conferring yesterday with Mets scout Buddy Kerr, who once worked with him in New York. [Johnny Pesky] recalled that one day he met with the late Sox general manager Mike Higgins to discuss the team’s problems “and I told him the problem was that we had six major league ballplayers. He threw me out of the office,” laughed Pesky. That voice over the PA system in the third and fourth innings wasn’t Sherm Feller’s; it was Oriole radio play-by-play man Jon Miller mimicking Feller, who was laughing during most of the routine . . . Hurst has now pitched at least six innings in all 16 starts and has pitched into the seventh inning in 13 games. He has also allowed five homers in his last four games. Hurst’s five strikeouts gave him 966 lifetime, three behind Bill Monbouquette, who is fourth among Sox hurlers . . . Stanley’s win was his 107th, moving him to fifth on the Sox career list past Joe Dobson.

CUBS TROUNCE DODGERS BEHIND GRACE, MOYER

Jamie Moyer improved his record to 5-7 Friday night as the Cubs pummeled Fernando Valenzuela and the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-2 before 42,763 quick-to- leave fans in Dodger Stadium. Mark Grace drove in five runs, a career high, three on a home run in the ninth. Grace and Ryne Sandberg each drove in a pair of runs for the Cubs in a five-run third inning that saw 10 men come to the plate against Valenzuela. Shawon Dunston, showing no effect from Wednesday’s hand injury, had two hits and scored twice. Moyer pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up a run on nine hits before needing relief help from Les Lancaster and Al Nipper. Moyer has allowed three runs or fewer in 14 of his 16 starts. And with his first victory over the Dodgers, he has beaten every National League team at least once in his two-plus seasons with the Cubs.
