Tyson Stays Hospitalized After Crash; Boxer `Groggy’, Stable; Bruno Fight Still On

Sunday’s accident occurred at about 11:20 a.m. in Catskill, a two-hour drive north of New York City. [Mike Tyson] had spent the night at the home of Camille Ewald, an elderly woman with whom Tyson lived when he was a teen-age protege of trainer Cus D’Amato. Tyson’s championship bout in London against Briton Frank Bruno was recently postponed until Oct. 22 because of the hand injury. Bill Cayton, Tyson’s manager, told the New York Daily News that he felt the fight would not be delayed.

If veteran Allemang decides to retire after season his CFL career will likely end on disappointing note

BRUISED LEOS: Ottawa is supposed to be the league doormat but tell that to the B.C. Lions. When the Riders left town, they left behind some battered Lions. Rob Moretto, playing his first game since breaking his left hand in training camp, broke the same hand. Also, linebacker Kevin Konar hyperextended his knee and Gerald Roper sprained his ankle. None is likely to play Sunday against Winnipeg. Ottawa has some hurts too and no time to heal. Today’s game in Calgary is the Riders’ third in nine days. Cornerback Tommie Williams is questionable with a knee injury, slotback Mike Hudson hurts all over and quarterback Art Schlichter continues to nurse rib and hand injuries. Linebacker Ken Braden has fully recovered from a concussion he suffered after being hit by slotback Jan Carinci. Hudson and Braden will start while Schlichter is expected to back up Jeff Wickersham.

Chicago’s very own Girls’ tennis thriving

[Katrina Adams] was achieving her Wimbledon success while the Chicago girls’ team was participating in Wightman Cup competition in Columbus, Ohio, this summer, and she was an inspiration. Every day, the girls’ followed Adams’ results. “It was exciting,” [Pat Freebody] said. “They could remember when Katrina played with them.” Between the clubs and the parks, Chicago put together a team that won the National City Team Championship four years in a row, through 1987. This year the team lost the title by one point after its top player, state high school champion Julie McKeon of Glenview, was sidelined the first day by a hand injury. Chris Neuman of Hinsdale, who was also a member of the National City team, reached the finals of the U.S. Tennis Association National 16s tourney this summer and Freebody considers Libertyville’s Anne Mall and Kaoru Shibata “two of the hottest 14-year-olds around.” Mindy Weiner of Morton Grove and Laura Dvorak of Downers Grove also have the potential to follow Adams and [Michelle Torres] into the pro ranks. In addition to [Chris Scott], teaching professionals with excellent track records with juniors include Jerry Karzen at North Shore, Steve Wild at Libertyville, Betty and Steve Hibben at Glenbrook, Mark Mergener at Mid-Town, Barry Bindelglass at Forest Grove, Milt Neuman (Chris’ father) at Willowbrook, Jay Kramer at Oak Brook and Rod Schroeder, who just returned to Tam.

Mall too good for her rivals Libertyville freshman a sensation

Mall is ranked No. 3 in the Chicago area in singles behind Oswego’s Deborah Edelman and Maine East’s Mindy Weiner. She beat Lyons’ No. 4 Laura Dvorak in last week’s Libertyville invitational. And she hoped to enhance her standing at this weekend’s New Trier invitational. Last year, Mall won the National Hardcourt and Clay Court championships for 12-year-olds. Last February, she beat [Kaoru Shibata] to win a national indoor tournament in Aurora in the 16-and-under class. In July, she was fifth among 128 entries in the Western. She is ranked No. 5 nationally in her class. Next month’s state tournament comes first. Mall knows she still may have to beat defending champion Julie McKeon of Glenbrook North, who is recovering from a hand injury. She lost a three-set match to McKeon in an off-season tournament but was encouraged by her effort.

Jackson surge revives Cubs Rookie’s 2 homers stump Cards

[Don Zimmer] also seemed wise in letting [Darrin Jackson] play center and bat third against left-hander Joe Magrane. Before the game, Zimmer said he liked Jackson’s chances of homering, especially with a lefty throwing fastballs and the wind blowing out. Platooned in center with Dave Martinez early this season, Jackson won the job when Martinez slumped. But then Jackson missed a few days with a stiff neck. Martinez’ bat warmed up, and when Jackson returned, Zimmer resumed the platoon. Finally, in mid-July, Martinez was traded for Mitch Webster, a leadoff, switch-hitting center fielder. Jackson isn’t the leadoff type, but he has power, which the Cubs need just as desperately. Left fielder Rafael Palmeiro’s hand injury gave Zimmer a chance to play Webster and Jackson side by side Saturday.

New-look Leafs stay on roll with 5-2 victory over Oilers

Tonight the Leafs are back in action, against the Quebec Nordiques in Kitchener, but they will be without second-round pick Tie Domi. The Leafs announced last night that the 5-foot-10, 200- pound tough guy would rejoin Peterborough in time for Petes’ Ontario Hockey League home opener tonight against the Toronto Marlies. With [Domi] gone Leafs’ enforcer role belongs to Chris McRae, who will be out another 10 days with a hand injury suffered in training camp fight with – who else? – Domi. Blueline banter: After the Leafs play the Nordiques tonight, they visit their farms hands, the Newmarket Saints, Sunday evening at the Newmarket Recreational Complex . . . Former Oiler Marty McSorley hurried home from the L.A. Kings’ camp earlier this week after his mother suffered a stroke at her home in Cayuga, Ont.

X-rays Scheduled Today Fryar, Brungardt Suffer Hand Injuries

Two Nebraska players were scheduled to undergo X-rays today to determine the extent of hand injuries suffered in the game. Though Arizona State entered the game last in the Pacific 10 Conference in pass defense, allowing 243 yards a game, Nebraska threw just 10 times, completing three for 29 yards. Arizona State was issued a “sideline warning” in the third quarter when Sun Devil players and coaches were detected outside the north 25-yard line. All team personnel must stay within the white box painted on the sideline between the 25-yard lines. If a team persists in wandering, the penalty is 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. Officials Criticized

Playing hurt is the norm for Gophers’ Cummings

The hand was fractured. [Pat] Cummings, a redshirt junior fullback from Madison, Wis., hurt it in Tuesday’s practice. Walking off the field that day, he massaged it with his left hand, saying “Something’s moving in there that shouldn’t be.” X-rays yesterday established the fracture. Injuries are nothing new for Cummings, who missed all of the 1986 season with a fractured foot and stayed deep on the depth charts last year with a torn calf muscle. But Cummings, with a 3.5 grade-point average as a finance major, has a head on his shoulders as well as a bandage on his hand. Injuries are just something else to overcome. Cummings is questionable for the Gophers’ Big Ten opener Saturday at Purdue, further blurring the offensive backfield picture. Cummings got his first career start last Saturday because Octavius Gould was hurt. Now Gould, wearing protective pads over his injured ribs and still suffering from “turf toe,” is back, but Cummings is hurt.

    How they compare

FIRST BASE Oakland’s Mark McGwire saw his home-run total fall from 49 to 32, but he still had 99 RBI. Todd Benzinger took over as Boston’s first baseman in July, so his numbers (13 homers, 70 RBI) are based on 405 at bats vs. McGwire’s 550. Benzinger, a converted outfielder, is still learning first base defensively. McGwire was the A’s best hitter against the Red Sox; Benzinger struggled against the A’s. Edge to A’s. SECOND BASE Boston’s Marty Barrett is solid. He was MVP of the ’86 ALCS and had 13 hits in the World Series that year. He hit .283, drove in a surprising 65 runs and and rarely makes a mistake in the field. Oakland’s Glenn Hubbard, bothered by a hamstring problem, will not play in the series. Light-hitting Mike Gallego (.209) or Tony Phillips (.203) will fill in. Neither has any speed or much power. Edge to Red Sox. SHORTSTOP Boston’s Jody Reed took over for Spike Owen when Joe Morgan replaced John McNamara as manager. Reed hit .293 in his 338 at bats. Oakland’s Walt Weiss, one of the club’s big question marks in the spring, was all the A’s had hoped he’d be in the field and hit a respectable .250. Both are legitimate Rookie-of-the-Year candidates. Even. THIRD BASE Boston’s Wade Boggs is coming off a season in which he won his fourth batting title in a row (No. 5 overall) and had his sixth 200-hit season – achievements made all the more remarkable by his off-the-field problems. Oakland’s Carney Lansford faded after a fast start and has a hand injury but is a stolen-base threat (29 steals) who drove in one run less than Boggs despite being outhit by 87 points. Edge to Red Sox. LEFT FIELD Boston’s Mike Greenwell is just OK in the field, but had an MVP-like season (.325, 22 HR, 119 RBI).

    AFC;Broncos trade for fullback

Depending on who you talk to, PITTSBURGH STEELERS QB Bubby Brister will be out anywhere from one to six weeks with a broken finger on his right hand. Dr. Thomas Cowan said normal recovery time is three to six weeks. Said Brister: “But he told me, `You ain’t normal.’ I’ve changed it to one to three weeks.” Brister’s replacement Sunday at Phoenix: Steve Bono or Todd Blackledge. “We’ll let you know by Sunday,” coach Chuck Noll said. The starting QB for the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS Sunday: Doug Flutie. “I know a percentage (of media) is saying I deserve to start and a percentage is saying Steve Grogan should start,” Flutie said. Is coach Raymond Berry concerned about Flutie’s size – 5-10? Hardly. “He has growth potential, something all athletes don’t have,” Berry said. Flutie, who threw for one TD and ran for the winning score against the Colts last week, will make his second regular-season NFL start. He started a playoff for the Bears in ’86 and a replacement game against Houston for the Patriots. Told he was named AFC defensive player of the week, LB Mark Brown of the MIAMI DOLPHINS said: “I didn’t even know they had this award. That’s why it’s a surprise.” LB Hugh Green returned to practice with a cast protecting a dislocated hand. Injury report – out: LB David Frye (knee); doubtful: CB Paul Lankford (knee); questionable: DE John Bosa (thigh), Green (hand); probable: WR Mark Clayton (hand), RB Lorenzo Hampton (hamstring). …

    NU FINDS GOOD BLEND

Last year NU lost quarterback Jim O’Brien. This season started with [Rich Rodriguez] as the starter and freshman Tony Lubischer (out with a knee injury) as No. 2. Now the depth chart has [Byron Hurt] first and freshman Tom Serluco second, with the third spot possibly going to versatile senior Brooks Estadt. In other action Saturday, Harvard was the victim of a pair of bad snaps and bowed to Cornell, 19-17; Holy Cross got a super running effort from fullback Joe Segreti while downing Dartmouth, 17-3; and Boston University lost three of four fumbles plus quarterback Jim Schuman (hand injury) in a 30-10 loss to Maine. Harvard had Cornell down, 17-7, after three quarters, but in the fourth, a high snap from center on a punt situation resulted in a safety. Harvard free kicked and Cornell gained good field position and scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie at 17-17. Then the Big Red won it on another high snap that went for a winning safety.

    LEARY TIRED OF EXCUSES

Regardless of [Tim Leary]‘s true mental state going into Game 6, there is no question he was one of the mainstays of the Dodger staff for most of the season before slumping noticeably in September. He finished 17-11, but was 15-8 with six shutouts and a 2.44 ERA through Aug. 31. The Dodgers attributed his 2-3 trot and 5.09 ERA in September to a tired arm. That incident, combined with the postponement of Game 3, prompted [Tommy Lasorda] to send Leary to the bullpen. That move allowed the manager to get three starts out of staff ace [Orel Hershiser] and two from [Tim Belcher] (both of which he won). Kevin Elster started at shortstop for the Mets in Game 6 over [Howard Johnson], in part because Elster was 3 for 5 with two homers against Leary . . . Former Red Sox pitcher Bob Ojeda, whose hand injury has kept him out of the Mets’ pitching rotation for the playoffs, had a rather interesting thought on Game 6. “We’re in the most must-win situation we could be in. We win or we go home.” . . . Dwight Gooden said he would be ready to pitch in relief last night or in Game 7 tonight.

Kirk Gibson not yet a great one Series: Letters

Editor: Who is Bruce Lowitt trying to fool? Kirk Gibson may be the best hitter the Dodgers have had in five years, but he’s not the one of game’s greatest players. While Gibson has put up some impressive numbers, let’s not start putting up statues just because he hits a game-winning home run. Jose Canseco hits a grand slam and becomes baseball’s first 40-40 man and he’s just mentioned briefly. What Lindbergh did for aviation, Cobb, Rose, Musial, and Mays did for baseball, not Kirk Gibson! Andrew Fussner Seminole Athletes’ big salaries not all they seem Editor: Mizell’s Oct. 19 column, “Salaries of stars boggle the mind,“ deserves comment. Remember the original Steve Young deal with the USFL franchise that drafted him? Something like $40-million was the published figure. Fact of the matter was the lion’s share of that was in the form of future payments to a scholarship program at BYU. I am appalled at the one-sided perspective reflected in [John] Harris’ column. Under the pretense of objective sports reporting he has managed to do a feature on the Dallas Cowboys. The words Chicago and/or Bears are mentioned a total of four times. Only three Bears are mentioned in the article, and then only as they related to the context of his story on the Cowboys. How were the points in the game scored? Was Jim McMahon injured in the fourth quarter? Yes, slightly shaken up with a hand injury that occurred during a sack. Did Herschel Walker gain 100 yards rushing? Did Neal Anderson? Was the Bears’ league-leading defense effective against Danny White’s aerial assault? I suggest Harris reserve his future features for his weekly column and report the game the next time he is assigned to it. James E. Solomon Oldsmar Green won’t last as Yankees manager

O’Neal Unlikely to Play Sunday Against Seattle

[Al Saunders] said he did want to endanger [Leslie O'Neal]‘s comeback by playing him too much this early. O’Neal has been used sparingly since his return, mainly in pass-rush situations. Saunders also said that running back Curtis Adams, the team’s leading rusher last season, might be placed on the injured reserve list today because of a knee injury. If Adams goes on injured reserve, Saunders said running back Barry Redden would be activated. Redden has been on the injured reserve list since Aug. 30 with a hand injury. Point Loma Nazarene dropped an NAIA District 3 game to Fresno Pacific, 3-0. One of Fresno Pacific’s goals came when a Point Loma Nazarene defender kicked the ball into his own net. Gabe Rivas and Fausto Ruiz each scored for Fresno Pacific (6-10-1, 4-3-1). Point Loma Nazarene is 8-8-1 and 1-4.
