NHL Roundup Toronto Wins 6th in Row on Road

The game marked the first time that Flyer right wing Dave Brown faced the Rangers since he received a 15-game suspension for a cross-check to [Tomas Sandstrom]‘s neck on Oct. 26, 1987. Brown missed 2 Flyers-Rangers meetings during the suspension, and 3 more with a hand injury. After the Canadiens had tied the score on Claude Lemieux’s goal 3:30 into the final period, MacLean scored the game-winner after a muffed clearing pass by Canadiens goalie Patrick Roy. Steve Yzerman’s pass into the slot glanced off MacLean’s stick and slid toward Roy, who attempted to poke the puck away. The clearing pass hit MacLean’s skate and bounced past Roy into the Montreal net.

Next game is war says Pens forward

Right now, New York Rangers coach Michel Bergeron doesn’t think too highly of Pittsburgh Penguins coach Gene Ubriaco. Nor do the Rangers think much of the Penguins as a team, and the feeling is mutual. Bergeron defended his player: “[David Shaw] is not the kind of player to try to injure any player in the league,” Bergeron said. “I control my team – I don’t believe he did,” Bergeron said of Ubriaco, a rookie NHL coach. Craig Simpson of Edmonton scored his 100th career goal Sunday in the Oilers’ 5-2 loss to Chicago . . . Kelly Kisio returned to the New York Rangers lineup Sunday after missing eight games with a hand injury and had a goal and three assists against Pittsburgh . . . Vancouver’s 2-1 victory over Calgary Sunday was the Canucks first win over the Flames since the 1986-1987 season. The Flames were 6-0- 2 against the Canucks last season . . . The Rangers have lost Jan Erixon for four to five weeks with a strained knee.

    Collyer News ‘No Surprise’

LINCOLN — Roger Oliveira stopped by Collyer Insulated Wire Co. yesterday morning to verify gloomy reports about the plant’s closing. Oliveira, who had been out of work with a hand injury for four weeks, wanted to get the story straight. “This used to be a strong company,” he said. “It’s going to he tough to find a job.” Most workers were disappointed but not angered by Tuesday’s announcement that the plant will lay off workers tomorrow. Richard D’Iorio, director of the state Dislocated Workers Program, said the remaining 220 employees will lose their jobs during the next eight weeks. (excerpt)

UAA GOALIE OUT WITH HAND INJURY

TX: UAA Trainer Doug Ericson said a hand specialist will be consulted today to see if pins can be placed in [Paul Krake]‘s finger. Ericson said the fracture is about a quarterinch above Krake’s big knuckle. Senior center Tony Catani beat Krake in the race to the training room after falling in warmups and reinjuring his ankle. Ericson said he’ll tape Catani’s ankle today and see if Catani can skate. SEAWOLF NOTES Freshman Greg Arend is still awaiting word on whether he needs back surgery. Arend has been in physical therapy for about a month and in traction sessions for the last 10 days, but he said his lower back is still in extreme pain. Arend originally hurt his back while working as a laborer on the North Slope last summer. Arend suffered a heart attack in preseason last year and has yet to play a game at UAA. … A goal scored by Cary Fisher in UAA’s 64 win at Western Michigan on Oct. 21 has correctly been given to the junior right winger. Steve Bogoyevac was originally given credit for the goal. UAA will eat a team meal at Round Table Pizza in the Dimond Center today at 6 p.m. … The Seawolves will sign autographs at the dinner.

    Even Kings’ Arena Is New

He was an assistant coach then, but now, after two seasons as the Kings’ midseason replacement head coach – first for Phil Johnson two years ago and then Bill Russell last season – [Jerry Reynolds] has been the Kings’ head coach since the first day of practice. Without [Reggie Theus] and [Otis Thorpe], the Kings are led by second-year point guard Kenny Smith, shooting guard Derek Smith and forward Rodney McCray, who came from the Rockets in the Thorpe deal. Kenny Smith missed 21 games with hand injuries as a rookie, but led the team in assists (7.1) and finished third in scoring (13.8). McCray, an All-NBA defensive selection, played five seasons with the Rockets, averaging 12.5 points and 6.7 rebounds. Derek Smith, injured during much of his six-year career, could lead the Kings in scoring. But his weak knees, which have resulted in only two healthy seasons, are again questionable.

Universities; Acadia wins Naismith Basketball Classic

Acadia built a 36-28 halftime lead and went ahead by as many as 15 points in the second half. Tournament MVP Grant McDonald chipped in 16 points for the Axemen, while Dean Goodbrandson led Winnipeg with 19 points and Murray Gehman added 15. The Ravens were without point guard Larry Elliot and forward Wayne Ferguson, who both suffered hand injuries in the Ravens 70-68 win over Guelph Saturday. Michele and Dede Hunt each scored one goal Sunday to give the Queen’s University Golden Gaels a 2-0 win over the Acadia Axettes in the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union soccer championship in Vancouvr. The win gives the Golden Gaels the gold medal and Acadia the silver. In the bronze medal game, the University of Alberta Pandas defeated the Concordia University Stingers 2-1.

    Reavis can depend on Dykema

If [Reavis] lineman Alan Dykema assembles a scrapbook so he can reflect on his high school career, it will contain no all-conference certificates and few press clippings that include his name. Reavis plays at Peoria Richwoods in a Class 5-A semifinal, for which Dykema is almost as responsible as the guy who gets the ink – Reavis running back Dave DeMumbrum. Playing tackle on both offense and defense, Dykema has emerged as Reavis’ top lineman since recovering from a serious hand injury. Reavis coach Lou Prato wasn’t armed with enough statistics and film to get Dykema on the all-SICA North team. The Rams finished fourth with losses to Richards, Carl Sandburg and Stagg.

UNI Seeks Win In Season Finale

Northern Iowa will end its first football season under Coach Earle Bruce today in a place the Panthers have never won. They will face Southern Illinois in a Gateway Conference game at McAndrew Stadium. Northern Iowa has beaten Southern only once in six tries, a 20-3 victory in Cedar Falls last year. Courtney Messingham made his first start for Northern Iowa last Saturday and directed the Panthers to a 77-0 rout of winless Wayne State. Messingham is filling in for Ken Macklin, who had surgery for a hand injury.

Mobile home slips off jack, kills teen Series: SUNCOAST DIGEST

HUDSON – A 17-year-old boy was killed Wednesday when a mobile home he was helping his friends move slipped off a jack and crushed him. A Gulf High School student and a man who owns the dilapidated mobile home frantically tried to dig out the teen, Scott Thomas Peters of New Port Richey, after jacking the home up again. “We tried to dig underneath him, but by the time we got him out, it was too late,“ said 15-year-old James S. McKay of New Port Richey. A sheriff’s spokesman said Peters, of 1164 Kentucky Ave., Apt. C, was knocked face down into the sand with the weight of the mobile home on his back. Man in wreck had neurological condition BROOKSVILLE – The elderly man whose car ran off U.S. 41 Tuesday, killing his sister who was a passenger in the car, had a neurological condition that caused him to become dazed for minutes at a time, said friends and relatives. Police still don’t know what caused Clinton Franklin Wadford, 81, of Clearwater, to drive off the roadway near Mondon Hill Road. Wadford’s condition had improved Wednesday from critical to serious at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. TAMPA – You can’t fault Fred Eckhardt for trying. First, the former Clearwater resident tried to get a better view of the 1984 Super Bowl by climbing a fence at Tampa Stadium. Then, after a security guard knocked him off the fence with a shoulder block, Eckhardt tried to collect for his resulting hand injuries by filing a lawsuit against the National Football League. This week, almost three years later, the suit finally came to trial. But Eckhardt, who didn’t get to see much from his perch on the fence, didn’t get anything out of his lawsuit, either. A jury on Wednesday returned a verdict against Eckhardt, finding in favor of the NFL.

Padre Notebook Templeton Says He’ll Be Happy to Play Wherever, Whenever Wanted

Not so fast. [Gary Templeton], a 13-year veteran who will be 33 on Opening Day, will likely start the season just as he ended last season-as a platoon shortstop. This time around it will be with minor league star Mike Brumley, as Dickie Thon has demanded to be traded. If the Padres need Templeton to play first base, they could be in trouble. Padre catcher Benito Santiago was named the National League Gold Glove catcher Wednesday by a vote of the league’s managers and coaches. It was Santiago’s first Gold Glove and the third won by a Padre in the last 3 years. Outfielder Tony Gwynn had won two consecutive Gold Gloves in 1986 and ’87 but was hampered this year by a hand injury and a midseason move to center field. The Padre organization was led by catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., who was Topps Co-Minor League Player of the Year. Three Padre minor leaguers were chosen as Topps Players of the Year in their respective leagues, and five were picked as Topps Minor League Players of the Month.

Wild-card host role Browns’ incentive vs. Dolphins

The key for the Browns has been quarterback Bernie Kosar, who missed six games after injuring his right elbow in the season opener. The Browns are 5-2 since his return. Injuries got the Browns again last week. Fullback Kevin Mack, who missed three games with a sore calf, probably will miss tonight’s game because of knee, calf and hand injuries. Tim Manoa is expected to start in Mack’s place. Returning to the Browns will be receiver Webster Slaughter, who missed seven games because of a broken arm. Slaughter, Kosar and Mack haven’t played together since the first quarter of the opener.

SPORTS Boys’ basketball N. Kingstown will go all out – all the time

North Kingstown has a new coach and new players, but still should be a playoff contender in B-Two. South Kingstown could be a surprise in B-Two if it gels early enough, while it looks as if Chariho may struggle through its entire B-Two schedule. Players to watch locally include 6-foot-5 Sean Maloney of North Kingstown, 6-2 Rick Everett (when he returns from a hand injury) and 5-6 playmaker Matt Mahar of Narragansett, 6-footer Marlon Sampson and 6-1 Heath Burrell at South Kingstown and Westerly’s 5-10 Mike Aiello. Narragansett, apparently, has acquired a replacement for [Tommy Penders] in 5-6 New York transfer guard Matt Mahar, who pumped in 25 against Chariho. The stocky Mahar brings to the Mariner squad very good court awareness, the ability to penetrate, excellent passing skills along with a decent outside shot.
