    Hawks cope with goalie crisis

With John Reid suffering a hand injury, the Hawks had to reach down to Saginaw again Tuesday and recall Chris Clifford as a backup for tonight’s game at the Stadium against the Detroit Red Wings (7:35, 780-AM). No other organization is in the same bind as the Hawks, who still have not made a move to acquire a goaltender. In [Ed Belfour], Reid and Clifford, the Hawks have taken up the entire Saginaw goaltending contingent. Saginaw had been using a local amateur player as Clifford’s backup after Reid was called up. If [Doug Wilson] plays, the Hawks will have seven defensemen. Veteran Bob Murray was recalled from Saginaw for Sunday night’s game against the New York Islanders. Murray had a power-play goal in a 3-2 victory.

    BRIEFLY

Jeremiah Curtis, 4, of Lake George was in serious condition yesterday in the intensive-care unit at St. Francis Hospital after he was accidentally shot in the chest by his companion. Benjamin Mabrey, 5, of Florissant was in satisfactory condition at St. Francis with a hand injury, authorities said. The shooting occurred Wednesday when Deborah Curtis and her son, Jeremiah, were visiting the Mabrey residence in Florissant, 40 miles west of here, said David Pierson, a Teller County sheriff’s deputy.

Jordan seeks to atone against Dantley, Pistons

At least three of those fouls came while guarding Piston small forward Adrian Dantley, an assignment [Michael Jordan] had requested because he felt strongly that he could stop Dantley. “Since we had younger guys guarding Dantley in the past, and they didn’t get the calls against Dantley, I thought that I would because I am more experienced and it was a situation where you had a veteran going up against a veteran,” Jordan said. “Now I see that he still gets the calls.” The call is still [Doug Collins]‘ to make. And Collins is sensitive to how the responsibility of guarding Dantley might detract from Jordan’s scoring. Even with chief defenders Joe Dumars (hand injury) and Rick Mahorn (sore back) sidelined, the Pistons still switched well to double up on Jordan quickly and effectively.

Abdul-Jabbar gets All-Star berth Commissioner Stern selects Lakers center to replace injured Magic on West team

Johnson is the all-time All-Star Game assists leader, but the hamstring injury he suffered in the Lakers’ loss to the Warriors on Wednesday at The Forum will prevent him from attending All-Star weekend here. West coach Pat Riley of the Lakers said Wednesday night he would prefer another point guard to join Utah’s John Stockton. And last February, when All-Star center Steve Johnson of Portland was unable to play because of a hand injury, [David Stern] said he would replace by position (bypassing guards with far better numbers) and named Dallas’ James Donaldson as the reserve center. “[Kareem Abdul-Jabbar] had received the next-highest total of votes from the NBA coaches in the selection of the All-Star reserves,” Stern said. “But, more important, his participation in one more All-Star game is a fitting tribute to his unequaled NBA career.”

Goodbye to `a consummate cop’ | Poem read at Beckmann funeral hints he may have sensed death

Beckmann, 35, of Fallbrook, was “the consummate cop, who knew his beat, the people in it, and took care of business,” Sheriff John Duffy eulogized. “There is no question that Deputy Sheriff [Theodore Leroy Beckmann] did something very worthwhile with his life during his short time on this earth, and he really made a difference.” Duffy wiped his eyes as he handed Beckmann’s family an American flag and kissed the deputy’s two sons, Theodore, 13, and Steven, 6. They sat with their mother, Brenda Beckmann of Vista; the deputy’s mother, Evelyn; and other family members at the West Coast Baptist Church. Detective James Rhem, 41, riding with Beckmann, was hospitalized for two days with head and hand injuries. Yesterday, he recalled the horror of watching the oncoming truck approach, and later seeing Beckmann dead in the seat next to him.

    REINHART RISK WELL WORTH IT

Al Iafrate is back with the Maple Leafs after three weeks away from the club with what he called “a major depressant disorder.” With a mind full of doubts, the 22-year-old forward had gone home to Detroit. “I felt trapped and went into a shell,” he said. “I had reached a point where I didn’t respect myself. I didn’t like myself. I pushed everyone away. I wouldn’t let anyone help me. I was self-destructing.” His state of mind had become a deep concern for his family. His father said, “We saw changes coming over him. We could feel him slipping away. I felt for a while I had lost him.” His experience illustrates one of the inherent pitfalls in the 18-year-old draft, where so much pressure lands on first-round picks . . . Dave Manson has become a better defenseman for Chicago since he started to realize “that I have to stop doing stupid things, taking stupid penalties. But I’m a physical player and I have to play that way.” He’ll just be more in control. He leads the league in penalty minutes with 271, but his per-game count has been diminishing for a month . . . Kevin Lowe of Edmonton on the pregame ovation for [Wayne Gretzky] in the All-Star Game last week: “The longer it lasted, the sadder I became.” . . . Isn’t it possible Mario Lemieux played laidback in the All-Star Game because he didn’t want to upstage Gretzky’s second homecoming? Lemieux considers a “100-goal season the ultimate,” and thinks Gretkzy’s 92-goal record “will stand for a long time.” He thought he had a realistic shot at it until a hand injury took him out of the lineup for a couple of games. Gretzky’s 215-point record may be within reach. The major problem, Lemieux said, is “at this time of the season, teams are starting to get defense-minded as they get ready for the playoffs, and it’s tougher to get the points.” Lemieux says the presence of Paul Coffey on his team “takes a lot of pressure off me. He makes such great passes to spring me. He gave me the scoring championship last season.” Lemieux and Gretzky follow each other’s progress. “I get a little nervous sometimes,” said Lemieux. “I follow what he does as close an anybody,” said Gretzky. “Mario’s got a shot at 215, but I’ve always thought the last 25 games were the toughest to get points. If he breaks the records, I’ll be first in line to shake his hand.” . . . Gretzky gave the car he won for being the MVP in the All-Star Game to his former protector, Dave Semenko. Semenko’s reaction: “I only asked him to write the introduction to my book. I think he got carried away.” Jari Kurri, Gretzky’s right wing with the Oilers, had a funnier retort when coach Glen Sather told him, “I’ve got a new protector for you, Dave Brown.” Kurri asked, “Do you mean I have to give him a car?”

Dreams of big money go on hold for boxers They did their jobs in ring at Seoul and now they hope it will pay off

They certainly did their jobs in the ring at Seoul. [Lennox Lewis] demolished the super heavyweight ranks to win a gold medal. [Egerton Marcus], fighting valiantly with a broken hand, captured a silver in the middlweight category. After much deliberation, Lewis has finally settled on a lawyer to represent him in negotiations, John Hornewer of Chicago, and they have narrowed the field to about five different organizations.Among those in the running to sign Lewis are promoter Bob Arum and the Kronk Gym in Detroit, which produced Thomas Hearns. The hand injury that cost Marcus the gold medal in Seoul has also been an impediment to his pro career. After several delays, Marcus received some good news from the doctor this week and has been given the green light for his first pro bout April 15 in Atlantic City.

In the last five seasons, the YANKEES have a 448-360 record, 40 games behind the Mets, who are 488-320. The Yankees and Mets played an exhibition game Monday for the first time since 1985. The Yankees won 6-4. … One of the Yankees’ buses broke down going to Port St. Lucie, resulting in a 20-minute delay. OAKLAND Phoenix ANGELS RHP Kirk McCaskill says he has pitched at full strength since January. Last season, McCaskill was bothered by elbow and hand injuries. Says McCaskill: “I’ve got a label of being hurt and that bothers me. I don’t feel the Angels were going to give me anything. I have to prove myself, reinforce to the staff that I can go out there and contribute.” … Johnny Ray is still 3-4 days from playing and making his bid to play 2B, manager Doug Rader says. … The Angels had a scare when rookie RHP Rich Monteleone, scoring on a sacrifice fly in the sixth of Monday’s game, cut his right cheekbone in a collision at the plate. Says Monteleone: “I haven’t been on the bases since high school. I didn’t know whether to stand or slide.” Monteleone is one of the five pitchers after two bullpen spots. CHICAGO Sarasota, Fla. Ron Kittle, with the WHITE SOX after playing parts of two seasons with the Yankees, says he liked the pressure of playing in New York: “Hit one home run in New York, it’s the equivalent of hitting five in another city.” … RHP Bill Long became the first starter to give up a run this spring when Pittsburgh scored Monday. … Harold Baines played LF for the first time in his career Monday. It marked the first time that Baines has played the OF since August 19, 1988. Baines was used primarily as a DH in 1988. … GM Larry Himes says 87 wins is a realistic goal this season. … SS Ozzie Guillen says that with the help of coach Walt Hriniak, he will readjust his goals to come within 50 points of Boston’s [Wade Boggs] instead of 100.

Padres have 2 Clarks, 4 wins

[Jack McKeon] is not expecting miracles from [Randy Ready] and will be patient. Ready is only in the first week of the transformation from all- purpose player to full-time third baseman. Also, two of Ready’s errors have come on pop-ups in the deep blue, cloudless Arizona sky. Perhaps the biggest disappointment so far has been the play of Shane Mack and Shawn Abner. Mack was 0-for-4 yesterday and bunted into a double play. Neither Mack nor Abner has a batting average yet. Both are 0-for-7 on the spring. Mack has played excellent defense, but a fifth outfielder has to carry a hard bat, not a soft glove. It is simply not a position you sacrifice offense for defense. You can bet McKeon will take a long, hard look at Clark the rest of the spring. The manager said he hopes to start weeding out players by the end of this 10-game trip and have his roster set by the time the team goes to Palm Springs to play the Angels on March 26. o o o Tony Gwynn was given the day off because he sprained his ankle Sunday. Last spring’s hand injury apparently has taught Gywnn a lesson: He doesn’t have to play in every exhibition game. Carmelo Martinez also sat out because of the flu…Former Padres president Chub Feeney was at the game. Feeney, who always seemed to be a bit more interested in the Giants than the Padres, even when he was club president, sat behind the Giants dugout. In Feeney’s box were three National League presidents. Feeney, Bart Giamatti and Bill White.

    DOPSON SHELLED BY REDS

[Wade Boggs], after singing some sort of Blues Brothers song in the dugout before the game, went 2 for 3, giving him 10 hits in his last 13 at-bats . . . General manager Lou Gorman said he did not expect to speak with Alan Nero, Boggs’ agent, until Thursday about a possible contract extension . . . Second baseman Marty Barrett said he would speak with Gorman sometime this week. Barrett said he wants to complete an extension this spring or he definitely will become a free agent next year . . . Jody Reed is out a couple of games because of a minor hand injury . . . Mike Rochford’s ERA climbed to 22.00 with a three-run, four-hit, one-inning stint . . . Sam Horn played two more innings at first base without incident, and in fact scooped an errant throw from third baseman Scott Cooper in the ninth . . . Pitcher Steve Ellsworth announced his engagement to Molly Lovington, 27, a graduate student at Boston University. The two will be married after the season . . . Gorman’s string of consecutive days mispronouncing Oakland shortstop Walt Weiss’ last name (he calls him “Weese”) was snapped at 21.

    HORN IMPROVING CHANCES TO STAY

Third baseman Wade Boggs and [Nick Esasky] both sat out because of hamstring injuries. Neither injury is believed serious, but Esasky may miss two or three more games because of a pulled right hamstring. Boggs, who has 10 hits in his last 13 at-bats, is expected to return today . . . Shortstop Jody Reed returned from a hand injury and went 1 for 3 . . . Against the Twins, Jim Rice went 2 for 4 with a double and drove in all three Red Sox runs on his 36th birthday. He is batting .435 with 10 hits and 10 RBIs in six games. Rice celebrated his birthday by getting in a few more tired hassles with writers . . . Hard Times at Perdue’s Plant

Linda Bucholts, a former [Frank Perdue] worker, told NPR that she went to the company nurse nearly every day to have her hands rubbed with Bengay and wrapped with an ace bandage and to get Tylenol. She said all the workers on her assembly line had their hands bandaged and that she finally went to a doctor after she began dropping her knife and cutting herself. Two days after she returned from having nerve surgery on her hand, the plant personnel manager fired her because she wasn’t working fast enough. Another worker said she was sent back to the same chicken trimming line after her doctor wrote the plant saying she should be reassigned because of her hand injuries. Perdue spokesman Richard Auletta told NPR that the company has never retaliated against an employee for being sick and that only 0.5 percent of the workers have repetitive motion syndrome. NPR, however, got hold of a personnel department memo that stated it was “normal procedure” for about 60 percent of the workers to go the nurse for pain killers and to have their hands bandaged. None of the Perdue factories is unionized. Frank Perdue told the president’s commission on organized crime in 1986 that he had sought help from organized crime figures to keep it that way. According to the NPR report, the Lewiston factory has never been inspected by state or federal health officials.

Gwynn says he’s matured in a year | Dealing with hand injury was impetus

“Personally, I’ve matured a lot more now than from this point last year,” said [Tony Gwynn], who still managed to win his third batting title last season, with a .313 average. “Sometimes when you’ve had success and never really tasted failure, you find you don’t know how to deal with it. That’s what happened last year. Early in the year, I snapped, I kicked stuff, I threw stuff on the wall, I got kicked out of a game. Manager Jack McKeon said Gwynn should be proud of last year. “Tony actually had his greatest year because he played in so much pain,” McKeon said. “To me, that .313 was better than the year he hit .370.” “That’s Jack,” said Gwynn, who had a single and a double yesterday and is 7-for-17 this spring. “That’s why everybody loves to play for Jack, because Jack will pat you on the back and tell you you did a great job. But I stunk last year. I know it. Sure, you see the .313 and a batting title. But you look deeper and you see I scored 64 runs (down from 119 in 1987), stole 26 bases (down from 56) and had 163 hits (down from 218).

New faces help Stars look sharp

[Mike Gartner]‘s goal was the Stars’ final one of the night and it finished off a burst that saw the Stars pull away from a 3-3 tie with two goals in the final three minutes of the second period. Brett Hull and Cliff Ronning scored goals seven minutes apart to pull the Blues even with 4:19 left in the period. But [Reed Larson]‘s centering pass from the right corner bounced off [Don Barber] and into the net with 2:44 remaining. Gartner stuffed a rebound through [Greg Millen]‘s legs for a power-play goal with 17 seconds left for the 5-3 lead. North Stars notes/ Forward Marc Habscheid was taken to a local hospital after suffering a hand injury in the first period. X-rays were negative and he is expected to play Tuesday against Toronto. McRae also is expected to play Tuesday. He was the only Star to play in all 68 games before last night. . . . Left wing Terry Ruskowski, who has not played since Nov. 12, said he does not expect to see action again and probably will announce his retirement at the end of the season after a 15-year pro career. Ruskowski, 34, has played in three games this season. . . . The Stars scratched defenseman Ville Siren and center Dusan Pasek for the second straight game. . . . The Stars finished their season series with St. Louis at 2-3-3. Both victories came at Met Center. . . . Last night, a message on the Stars’ scoreboard read: Cheryl, will you marry me? Doug. A few minutes later, the message was: Cheryl, will you marry me? [Bob Rouse]. Later in the game, a final message flashed: Cheryl says no to Doug and Bob but yes to Brad.

Making a pitch for the best teams in softball York coach Babyar sees western teams moving up in class

    1. YORK: [Tom Babyar] returns catcher Jeannine Paradis, whom he feels is a definite Division I prospect; third baseman Margaret Haenish and second baseman Bonnie Richrath behind [Christa Barkdoll] and [Lisa Kontek], who also plays infield. Stock, who batted .392 for two years, opted to play soccer last year after suffering a hand injury. Watch sophomore Karen Calabrese, a likely leadoff hitter. 7. RB: Coach Larry Rocco is worried about the Riverside-Brookfield offense that graduated, but he has some big guns left with outfielders Kathy Jurgens (.360) and Tracy VandeMerkt, shortstop Sara Jisa (.375), designated hitter Robyn Wasil, outfielder-pitchers Tina Fischer and Clare Brouder. Sophomores Jennifer Kirk, Char Wheatley and Kris Lemon figure to be big contributors. Also figuring to see a lot of playing time are first baseman Susan Grandys, second baseman Jennifer McCarthy and third baseman Sheri Michael. 9. WHEATON CENTRAL: Coach Joe Gerace returns third team all-area catcher Ceci Rettig and Tina Higgenson. The only pitcher back with experience is Betsy Neimann. What could have been the most experienced team Wheaton Central ever had took a small detour because all three players figure to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks with injuries and illness. The Tigers will be strong in pitching with sophomore Brandy Harrison and freshman Kelly Heatherington. First baseman Heather Cook could be Gerace’s best power hitter ever, the infield will be in good hands with Allison Precht and Jackie Loosli and the top outfielders are Karen Charles and Rachel Reinerth.
