Broken Support Wire Hampers Cape Effort

[Phillipe Monnet], who turned 32 in the Atlantic en route to Cape Horn, climbed aloft to clear the tangle. Working high above a pitching deck – an exercise best compared to handling tools while riding a bucking bronc on the edge of a cliff – Monnet suffered hand injuries. The nature of the injuries was not clear last night. With or without a record, however, Monnet has rewritten the rules for the New York-San Francisco record. His boat, a three-hulled sloop – a trimaran – has a much higher potential speed than the single-hulled Thursday’s Child, even though both are 60 feet long. But previous attempts to sail a multihull upwind, east to west, through the storms of Cape Horn have failed. The most spectacular failure was in 1984, when Briton Chay Blyth was flipped upside down by steep, breaking seas and was rescued in critical condition.

ONCE AGAIN, INJURY TESTS PISTONS’ CHARACTER

DETROIT – Amid such franchise records as most wins in a season and most wins on the road, there is a discouraging blemish the Pistons would rather forget: most injuries ever in a season. Coach Chuck Daly has said this has been his toughest coaching season. Despite numerous injuries to key players, he has maneuvered the Pistons to their best record since the franchise moved from Fort Wayne, Ind., for the 1957-58 season. [Isiah] Thomas was fined $5,000 and suspended by the NBA yesterday for starting a fight with Chicago center Bill Cartwright in the Pistons’ 114-12 victory Friday night in Chicago. Thomas suffered a hand injury that may cause him to miss the rest of the NBA’s regular season and part of the playoffs.

HAND INJURY SIDELINES THOMAS — DETROIT STAR HURT IN FIGHT WITH CARTWRIGHT, DRAWS $5,000 FINE

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Guard Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons may be lost for the rest of the NBA’s regular season after suffering an injury to his left hand in a fight with Chicago center Bill Cartwright. Thomas was have his hand re-examined today to determine how long he will be sidelined. Thomas injured the hand in a first-quarter fight Friday night with Cartwright. The hand swelled badly and there was concern it may have been broken. Detroit Assistant Coach Brendan Suhr said Thomas underwent tests at a Detroit hospital after the Pistons returned from Chicago yesterday morning.

Hand injury could keep Pistons’ Thomas out of early playoffs

[Bill Cartwright] was fined $2,500 and suspended for one game – today’s match against the Hawks at Atlanta. [Isiah Thomas] was fined $5,000 and suspended two games because NBA operations chief Rod Thorn decided Thomas threw the first punch. “I am very disappointed,” Pistons coach Chuck Daly said of Thomas’ punishment. “They say Cartwright did not land a punch. In that case, why was he ejected? Is this a case where Isiah is punished extra because he is a Piston? It doesn’t seem fair.”

Sox dealt bad hand, lose Fisk Ease sting with victory on Lyons’ homer in 9th

“It’s going to be tough on the young pitchers,” [Jeff Torborg] said. “They need guidance and [Carlton Fisk] is a natural for them. [Matt Merullo] and [Karko] will have to keep notebooks on the players.” Torborg, like Jim Fregosi before him, had come to appreciate the 41-year-old Fisk. In fact, Torborg had just given a dissertation on Fisk two days before. Torborg let Fisk set his own pace. Fisk responded with two home runs in his first six games, despite the hand injury. He caught every inning of those games, except the final one Monday.

Mandlikova pulls out of Eckerd Open

LARGO – Big names are falling at the Eckerd Open women’s tennis tournament and play hasn’t even started. Hana Mandlikova, a former top-five player in the world, withdrew from the tournament over the weekend because a flu bug wouldn’t allow her enough practice time to get ready for today’s opening round, Eckerd officials said. Mandlikova becomes the third marquee player to pull out of the Eckerd Open in the last week. Kathy Rinaldi, a 1985 Wimbledon semifinalist from Amelia Island, and former top-10 player Andrea Temesvari also withdrew from a field that tournament officials had described as one of their best ever. Rinaldi aggravated a hand injury during last week’s Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island. Temesvari withdrew from an Eckerd qualifying tournament before her opening match on Saturday because of the flu.

See You in the Morning’: Tintypes of the ’80s

Something is wrong and, soon, the family is in pieces and Daddy is about to marry someone new and start all over again. Ostensibly a comedy of modern manners, “See You in the Morning” is about the chaotic, partner-switching family life of the ’80s and, watching it, you feel as if you are being “Donahued” to death. The film has a sort of waxy buildup of warmth and sentiment-it practically has LET’S HUG! stamped on every frame. Written and directed by Alan Pakula, it chronicles the troubled histories of two families, the Livingstons and the Goodwins, each in its own way insufferably accomplished. The second clan is headed by Peter (David Dukes), a world-acclaimed pianist who, early on, kills himself because of his failure to recover from a paralyzing hand injury, leaving behind his dedicated wife Beth (Alice Krige) and their two children Cathy and Peter (Drew Barrymore and Lukas Haas). Still reeling from his divorce, [Larry Livingston] is introduced to Beth by their mutual friend, Sidney (Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Linda Lavin), who describes her as a saint, “the only kind of woman who’d have anything to do with you.” But the last thing Larry appears to be is a handful. Larry is more the homey, good-husband type-faithful, attentive, safe. And when Beth overhears him giving out his home number to one of his patients, she melts. Men are men, but a good bedside manner is hard to find.

    Soviets dump Team Canada

[Valeri Kamenski] gave the Soviets a 4-2 lead at 2:28 of the final period, 41 seconds into Glenn Anderson’s interference penalty _ Canada’s sixth minor of the game. At the 13:37 mark of the period, Finnish referee Seppo Makela called the Soviets’ Sergei Nemchinov for interference and then handed the Canadians a golden opportunity by slapping veteran Sergei Makarov an unsportsmanlike minor-misconduct. Also scoring for the Soviets were Andrei Khomutov, Vladimir Krutov and Makarov. Soviet assistant coach Igor Dimitriev said star centre Igor Larionov did not dress because of a hand injury but would play Monday against Sweden.

CONCERT REVIEW Cray has a winning formula

Unfortunately, guitarist Tim Kaihatsu was recovering from a hand injury – he wore a cast Saturday – and could barely play, sitting out the last portion of [Robert Cray]‘s performance. But the Memphis Horns, Andrew Love on tenor sax and Wayne Jackson on trumpet, broadened the Cray sound and accentuated his soul leanings on songs like Change of Heart, Change of Mind, Playin’ in the Dirt or Nothin’ But a Woman. While Cray has undoubtedly adopted pop elements in his sound, people who think he’s not a bluesman should have heard him work out on a slow, breaking-up number like The Last Time. With Peter Boe’s organ chords rumbling underneath, and the horns slowly swelling up in the background, Cray gradually built the song into a cry of anguish. Cray’s rich dark tone and penchant for using minor keys nicely accent his themes of betrayal, infidelity and guilt.

Prevention And Treatment Of Hand Injuries

Hand injuries account for a large proportion of work-related injuries and are also costly in terms of medical care and lost work time. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) often affects workers who repeatedly flex and extend their wrists during the course of a day. The Tinel’s test, the Phalen’s test, and electrodiagnostic tests can be used to diagnose CTS. The syndrome can be prevented by early diagnosis, job reassignment, and redesign of tools. Proper hand surgery, together with proper hand therapy, can help get a worker back on the job as soon as possible. An initial work readiness assessment and an on-site job visit give insurance companies documentation of a patient’s status and help the physician return reluctant employees back to work.

    Hospital services

The editorial, ”Hospital Services:’ Restraint’ can also be bad” (April 21, was somewhat odd, given the letter April 16 from a gentleman who had suffered a serious hand injury and who received excellent care at Queensway-Carleton Hospital. The writer said that he felt that this was the norm in Ottawa-Carleton. I am sure others would agree.

Dr. Carmelo to Canseco: Jose, you will play soon

As they did with [Carmelo Martinez] four years ago, doctors have predicted [Jose Canseco] will be sidelined for as long as eight weeks. But Canseco should take heart. In 1985, Martinez returned much sooner. The genesis of Martinez’s 1985 hand injury was much the same as the problem experienced this spring by Canseco — although it certainly did not take as much time to analyze the injury. In 1985, Martinez came to camp with a pain in his hand and soreness in his wrist. X-rays were taken, but club physicians could not find the source of the pain. Martinez can’t seem to make any more sense of what has happened to him so far this season, either. Save for one four-game stretch (April 24-27) when Martinez accumulated six hits, two homers and five RBIs, his bat has been non-existent. Last night against the left-handed [Joe Magrane], Martinez struck out looking with Jack Clark on second and nobody out in the second, grounded out meekly to short in the fifth and finally drove in Tony Gwynn from second with a one- out double down the left-field line to tie the score 1-1 in the seventh.

Doctor Loses Practice After Hand Injury Jury OKs $816,500-Award to Compton Dentist

[Theodore Shirley], now 43, testified that his right index finger was sprained when [Tom Reza] shoved him against a wall in his office after he refused to speak to a mortgage company manager on the telephone. The sprain never healed properly, Shirley argued, and a permanent, involuntary twitch of the injured finger has made it impossible for him to work as a dentist. In addition to Shirley, two dental patients testified that they saw Reza push or hit the dentist, [Fred Harding] said. One witness said Reza grabbed Shirley by the lapels and threw him into a wall, while the second said he saw Reza strike the dentist with his fist, Harding said. Reza testified that he never pushed or bumped Shirley. The jury, although rejecting a battery charge, perhaps “thought there was an unintentional brushing up of the two parties against each other . . . and that was negligence on behalf of Mr. Reza,” Harding said. “But Mr. Reza denies even that.”

Spectators injured after bleachers collapse during graduation in Fowler

The injured were transported by ambulance to Parkview and St. Mary Corwin hospitals in Pueblo. Names of the victims were not available. One woman was to be admitted at Parkview while a 20-year-old man and a 42-year old woman were expected to be admitted at St. Mary Corwin with back, leg and hand injuries, hospital spokesmen said. [Roger Lundy] said rescuers had to lift the bleachers off some of the victims. He said some of the injured were adults and some children who had come to watch about 30 seniors graduate.
