There’ll be a hot time for us all for the 4th

Minnesota starts a long July 4th weekend today with the prospect of several days of temperatures in the 90s and high humidity, thanks to a huge high-pressure system parked across the middle of the continent. Conviction carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $3,000 fine. That law did not take effect until last Aug. 1, so the July 4th holiday will be the first time it applies to the traditional day of fireworks displays. Brace said the misdemeanor penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a $700 fine continues to apply to convictions involving less than 35 pounds of fireworks. Forty injuries resulted from fireworks use in Minnesota last year, Brace said. They included 19 burn injuries, seven hand injuries, four eye injuries, three loss-of-hearing cases and two partial amputations. Staff writers Jim Dawson, Conrad deFiebre, Sheri Milner and Kenneth Harris contributed to this report.

Explosions trigger fire in Atlanta offices, killing 4 and injuring dozens

A fire touched off by a series of explosions sent choking smoke through a 10-story office building Friday, killing four people and injuring dozens. Terrified workers smashed windows with chairs, and a woman jumped from the sixth floor. One woman who jumped from a sixth-floor window was critically injured, [Sandra Walker] said. The woman, one of 38 people taken to hospitals, was not identified immediately, but Piedmont Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Kelley said she suffered two broken legs, a fractured ankle and hand injuries. 4 Die, Dozens Hurt in Fire, Blasts in Atlanta Building

“When you have people jumping out of windows, you’ve got a panic situation,” said Tom Perrin, Atlanta’s acting fire chief. Perrin said the building was built in 1962, before a requirement that public buildings have sprinklers. “Three of the fire victims could have been saved if there had been a sprinkler system in this building,” he said. One woman who jumped from a sixth-floor window was critically injured, [Sandra Walker] said. The woman, one of 38 people taken to hospitals, suffered two broken legs, a fractured ankle and hand injuries. Some of the others injured were treated for burns, smoke inhalation and cardiac arrest. Five of the injured were firefighters, four of whom suffered smoke inhalation and one who burned his hands, Walker said.

Official say sprinklers might have saved lives of Atlanta fire victims

They were rescued by firefighters using ladders, but one woman, 20-year-old Cassandra Hayward, leaped from a sixth-floor window to escape the fire. She suffered broken legs, a broken ankle and hand injuries and was in critical but stable condition yesterday at Piedmont Hospital. Seven others remained hospitalized yesterday, one in critical condition. Sgt. Steve Martin with the Fulton County medical examiner’s office identified two of the dead as Clifton C. Chandler, 29, of Decatur, a graphic artist with an office in the building; and Victor Tinubu, 36, of Atlanta. Martin said Tinubu’s reason for being in the building was not immediately known.

Twins vs. Mariners At the Kingdome

[Jeffrey Leonard] has been one of the season’s best free-agent finds. He split 1988 with San Francisco and Milwaukee, and a hand injury limited him to 10 homers and 64 RBI. But since signing with the Mariners in December, he has been relatively healthy. A chronic arch problem has kept him out of the outfield for the last two months, but it hasn’t stopped the Hac-Man from hitting as well as he did when he tried to slug the Giants into the 1987 World Series with a playoff record-tying four home runs in the first five games of the NL Championships against St. Louis. This season he is among the AL leaders in home runs (15) and RBI (55) and is on his way to exceeding his personal bests of 21 homers and 87 RBI.

The Hardest Hardball in the World YOU GOTTA HAVE WA by Robert Whiting (Macmillan: $17.95; 224 pp.)

There are the American anti-heroes, the gaijin (foreigners) who came to Japan to play for crowd appeal, huge salaries and, many felt, for the purpose of providing the Japanese press and fans with easy whipping boys: -Davey Johnson, a power hitter now managing the New York Mets, who enjoyed great success in Japan before suffering a hand injury that limited his hitting. In Japan, players play through injuries; they merely practice harder until the aches and pains depart. When Johnson wouldn’t and couldn’t, he was deemed to have disrupted team wa and eventually was released, even though he was among the best players on his team. -Reggie Smith, the volatile former Dodger whose temper once took him into the stands after some fans at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Smith was afforded little or no privacy, and his flamboyant personality flew right in the face of the Japanese way. The Japanese have a saying: “The nail that sticks up shall be hammered down.” Eventually, Smith was, and left Japan in anger. -Randy Bass, arguably the most successful gaijin ever to play Japanese baseball, who got to within one home run of the fabled Sadaharu Oh. But then, in the final game of the season, his last chance to tie the record of 55 homers in a 130-game season, was thrown nothing buthorrible, unhittable pitches by Japanese pitchers. The manager of the team playing against Bass that night, who allegedly instructed his pitchers as to how to pitch to Bass, was, of course, Oh himself.

Austin baseball team: It ain’t over ’til it’s over

Guebara says exceptional pitching depth has helped [Manchaca] stage its tournament comebacks. Three right-handers, fastballing Eric French and curveballers Andrew Morales and Joe Torres, plus left-hander Pete Morales, have glittered on the mound. Other standouts include shortstop Winfield Wilson, catcher John David Gutierrez, third baseman Guajardo Segura second baseman Paul Guebara, and outfielders Maxie Fuentes and Joseph Rios. When not pitching, French and Torres are outfielders and Martinez plays first base. Anthony Hippolito and Charlie Ferraro provide infield support and Mario Fuentes was a solid third baseman until he was sidelined with a hand injury during the district tournament.

A Blue-Tinged Life for the Silver Screen Story of Rock Survivor Carl Perkins Could Be a Sobering, Uplifting Movie

Those blues and country influences, speeded up and delivered with a distinctive guitar stutter, would fuse together into rockabilly, the music that Perkins and [Elvis Presley] pioneered. Perkins’ music was a family affair, with his brothers, [Jay Perkins], a rhythm guitarist, and Clayton, a bassist, providing backup. They tried at first to connect with the big, New York-based record labels. But after hearing Presley’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky” on the radio, Perkins gravitated to Sun. Perkins watched them by the light of a Wurlitzer jukebox, the only stage lighting he had. When the music stopped, Perkins heard the youth, a college boy, reproaching his dance partner: “Uh, uh-don’t step on my suedes.” “She was so pretty,” Perkins said. “It hurt her feelings. She said, `I’m sorry.’ “I thought, `You must be a fool to think about a pair of shoes with a girl that pretty.’ ” “My wife would always tell my children, `You’ve got a good daddy, don’t be mad at him. He’ll sober up someday.’ “I’ve been fortunate I had this woman who was so strong for me. [Jerry Lee Lewis] didn’t have that. I’ve watched all these guys from Elvis down. They lost their wives and families. If that had happened to me, I would never have been able to conquer my alcohol problems.” The long, dark middle section of our imaginary film stretches into the late 1960s. Perkins, recovered from his hand injury, has been touring since 1965 as part of [Johnny Cash]‘s road show. One night, he walks onto the stage of the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and sees only a blur. He is in the middle of a three-day drinking jag. On an off day in Southern California, the Cash entourage spends a day at the beach. Perkins, unable to function, stays on the parked tour bus.
