Spotlight: QB’s bluegrass roots took nicely to R.I. soil Rothmann flourishing at Rogers
“He’s outstanding,” coach John Toppa said, “and he has outstanding character. [Troy Rothmann]‘s added immensely to [Rogers] football just by being here.” Now he had moved to Newport and Rogers High and, despite being hampered by hand injuries, Rothmann, with help from backup QB Frankie Newsome, paced the Vikings to their third straight undefeated season in Class A-1. Rothmann is, Toppa flatly stated, among the best he has been blessed with over his 32 years years at Rogers.

SNAKE EYES:
Whitesnake is back-with a new guitarist! He’s none other than Steve Vai (late of David Lee Roth’s band), who handled the guitar chores on White-snake’s new album, “Slip of the Tongue,” when regular axeman (and co-songwriter) Adrian Vandenberg was felled by a hand injury.

McKyer Returns / Montana Won’t Face Jets
Meanwhile, cornerback Tim McKyer returned to the team, as expected, a week before his four-game suspension was scheduled to end. [George Seifert] and McKyer met privately, then both addressed the players in a meeting, and Seifert said he was satisfied with McKyer’s “”commitment to this club.” The rundown: — 1984: Because of a bruised sternum, Montana missed a game at Philadelphia on September 23. [Matt Cavanaugh] threw three touchdown passes as the 49ers won, 21-9. — 1985: A bruised sternum suffered against the Rams kept Montana out of another game against the Eagles. Cavanaugh replaced him again as the 49ers won, 24-13, at Candlestick Park on November 3. — 1986: Montana missed eight games because of a degenerative disk problem in his back that required surgery. [Jeff Kemp] started the first six of those games before he was injured, and [Mike Moroski] played the last two. The 49ers had a 4-3-1 record in the eight games. — 1987: Montana did not start, due to a hand injury, against New Orleans on November 15. [Steve Young] started but suffered a concussion. Montana took over in the second quarter and completed 16 of 29 passes for 144 yards as the Saints won, 26-24. Later in the season, Montana pulled a hamstring early in a December 14 game against Chicago. Young took over, throwing four TD passes, as the 49ers rolled to 41-0 victory, and played all the way in a 35-7 victory over Atlanta on December 20. Young played the first half and Montana the second half in a 48-0 victory over the Rams on December 27. — 1988: Montana suffered a bruised elbow in the season opener against New Orleans and Young started against the New York Giants on September 11. However, Montana played the second half, passing for the winning touchdown in the final minute as the 49ers won, 20-17.

Bills Coaches Mix It Up, Paper Says One Assistant in Reported Fight Has Face, Hand Injuries
Buffalo Bills assistant coaches Nick Nicolau and Tom Bresnahan got into a fight while reviewing videotape from Sunday’s victory over the New York Jets, leaving Bresnahan with face and head injuries, according to a published report. The Buffalo News reported today that Nicolau, the wide receivers’ coach, apparently knocked Bresnahan to the floor Monday with an uppercut to the chin in a meeting room of the Bills administrative building at Rich Stadium. [Marv Levy] described Nicolau and Bresnahan as “close friends. Their wives are close friends. They (the coaches) lived together for four or five months in the off-season.”

Thousand Oaks, formerly the top-ranked 4-A team, lost Tuesday in three games to Marmonte League rival Royal. Second-ranked Louisville, meanwhile, cemented its chances by defeating the 4-A Division’s third-ranked team in the Marlborough tournament last weekend. Louisville defeated Notre Dame Academy, 15-7, in the tournament final. Playing behind running backs such as Sean Burwell last year and senior Pat Bryant this season, [Vince Johnson] didn’t see the ball much. With Bryant out because of a hand injury, however, Johnson rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 71 yards and another score as Cleveland beat Kennedy, 35-21, last week.

Lawyer threatens to sue Cowboys owner for deceptive trade: losing
CARTHAGE (AP) – Dallas Cowboys’ Coach Jimmy Johnson and owner Jerry Jones aren’t having a good year. The team is 0-7; Herschel Walker’s defected; star quarterback Troy Aikman has suffered a hand injury. [Robert Goodwin] says a part of the state’s heritage has been tarnished by the Cowboys’ inglorious start. He asked Johnson and Jones to consider changing the team’s name “to avoid further embarrassment to a proud past.”

UM quarterback picture clearer after FSU game
TALLAHASSEE – Either way you look at it, Gino Torretta was destined to give the University of Miami’s Erickson duo something to think about Saturday night. The Hurricanes redshirt freshman quarterback made only his third collegiate career start in Miami’s 24-10 loss to Florida State, but in many ways it was a crossroads game for the Pinole, Calif., native. A third straight strong outing by Torretta, and first-year Hurricanes coach Dennis Erickson could count on having a pleasantly unexpected problem – choosing between the blossoming Torretta or former starter Craig Erickson, on the mend from a hand injury.

Riders’ doctor believes rash of injuries just bad fortune
“It’s just an unusual year,” said [Mark Aubry]. “I don’t know how you explain seven upper body injuries (including six hand injuries). Damon Allen was hurt taking a snap, Troy Wilson fell on his shoulder, (Charles) Merritt falls on his wrist and dislocates it. These are freakish injuries.” Aubry points to the injuries of lineman Barry Moton (hamstring) and quarterbacks Willie Gillus (foot) and Tony Kimbrough (ankle and hamstring). None received much playing time early in the season; all were hurt when they were pressed into action because starters were out. GOOD CITIZEN: Before the game, Citizen advertising director Bob Littlemore will be presenting the Good Citizenship Award to the Rider player who made the greatest community contribution this season… and Loyd Lewis receives from [Jim Durrell] the Bill Smyth memorial trophy as the Riders’ outstanding lineman. Smyth was an assistant coach in Ottawa during the Frank Clair era.

Lidster a rejuvenated man
[Doug Lidster] not only has been one of the Vancouver Canucks’ most effective players as the one-quarter mark of the NHL season approaches but he’s also experiencing an offensive rejuvenation. With nine points (2-7) in his last 11 games, Lidster is on pace for his best year since 1986-87, when he set a club scoring mark for defencemen of 63 points (12 goals, 51 assists). He slumped to five goals and 17 assists in 63 games in ’88-89, career lows in a season interrupted by a hand injury and a fractured cheekbone. The fact Lidster now is being used on the power play, in addition to killing penalties and taking a regular shift, is contributing to his improved stats. Still, he’s only coach Bob McCammon’s third choice to work as [Paul Reinhart]‘s partner on the power play. When they’re available, [Robert Nordmark] and Barry Pederson (also injured) normally would play ahead of Lidster, who, strangely enough, doesn’t consider himself an offensive defenceman.

Hernando, coach got bad breaks vs. Pirates Series: North Suncoast Notes
BROOKSVILLE – If the cast on Mike Imhoff’s hand doesn’t reflect the lingering remnants of the Hernando High football team’s 41-8 loss to Crystal River, then the Leopards’ game jerseys do. Despite his hand injury, Imhoff washed his club’s dirty laundry in preparation for the Leopards’ season-ending showdown with cross-county rival Springstead on Friday. The excitable former Michigan State defensive back reluctantly admitted breaking a bone in his right hand after slamming it against a door during halftime of the loss to Crystal River. He broke bones in the same hand twice during his college playing days, Imhoff said, and once last year. Springstead swimmer loses in close shave

Fish Plant Scrutinized After Safety Complaints
Rather than canceling “The Tolliver Show,” as he did after the Seattle game, Charger Coach Dan Henning stuck with his rookie for a second consecutive week. The result may have put “The McMahon Show,” which is certainly no longer cost effective, in permanent reruns. [Billy Joe Tolliver] completed 24 of 39 for 350 yards and two touchdowns Sunday. Remember, too, Tolliver didn’t roll over and go to sleep when the Chargers traded for [Jim McMahon]. He said right from the beginning that he planned to make a run at the starting job. But what were the Chargers going to do? Make one of the biggest trades in their history and then start the 51st pick in the draft? Uh-uh. Charger tackle Joel Patten, who missed part of Sunday’s game with a hand injury, will be X-rayed for a possible fracture. Coach Dan Henning said it hasn’t yet been determined whether he will be available for Sunday’s game with Kansas City. Other Charger injuries include cornerback Sam Seale (hamstring), outside linebacker David Brandon (hamstring) and defensive tackle George Hinkle (hamstring). All three will likely play Sunday.

SPORTS Girls’ basketball North Attleboro once again has some lofty goals in mind
Debbie Dalton has begun her third year as North Attleboro coach after guiding the team to a combined 34-9 mark over the last two years. The Rocketeers qualified for the Eastern Mass. Division II Tournament each year, but a talented Westwood squad eliminated North Attleboro each time – once in the second round and then in the first round. Jennifer Smith, a junior, began the season in the starting lineup, but was sidelined with a hand injury during the team’s initial game of the season, against Bishop Feehan. [Sue Holt] will fill in for her during the injury. Senior captain Barbara Fellmann joins [Deidre Robichaud] in the backcourt. The goals for this club are numerous. In its 10 defeats over the last three years since Dalton has began coaching the team, they have all come against either Bishop Feehan (four losses), Foxboro (4) or Westwood (2).
