GOOD NIGHT IN NET LEMELIN ENDS SKID WITH 30-SAVE GAME

In the end, [Reggie Lemelin] finished with 30 saves and was spared the one moonshot by [Dave Mackey]. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Lemelin back in net tomorrow afternoon (1:35) when the Bruins face the Red Wings at the Garden. He was in net for an overtime win in Detroit Nov. 21. Lyndon Byers (hand injury) and Allen Pedersen (sore back/ hip) remained out of the Boston lineup. Rob Cimetta (flu) joined the list of the nightly disabled, making way for Greg Johnston to get back into the lineup . . . The Bruins will work out at the Garden this morning . . . Per agreement with the Players’ Association, there are no practices Dec. 24 or 25. The Bruins resume play Tuesday night at the Garden against the Maple Leafs.

HANLON TAKES REVENGE DETROIT GOALIE DECKS BURRIDGE

[Paul Devorski], a stand-by ref last season, put his whistle away for the most part. He did make a rare call in the second, however, when he caught [Glen Hanlon] for intentionally knocking the goal off its posts — a delay-of-game penalty . . . The Bruins again were without Allen Pedersen (sore back/hip) and Lyndon Byers (hand injury) . . . Head coach Mike Milbury, on pulling Andy Moog in favor of Reggie Lemelin in net to start the second period: “Andy was standing back a little in net, he was fighting it. And we wanted to win, to get a boost going into the holiday. Reggie beat them last time in Detroit, played well Thursday . . . I might have second-guessed myself before the game and gone with Reggie.” . . . The Bruins’ four-goal burst in the final period included three goals on three shots in 2:38 and the four goals came on four shots, across 4:49 . . .

    Loyola Is Healthy for Niagara

“The Bank” is open for business and, for a change, Loyola Marymount basketball Coach Paul Westhead will have a full deck to work with when the Lions play host to Niagara on Saturday, then head east for a three-game road trip in the winter wonderlands of Ohio and Pennsylvania. On New Year’s Day the Lions will forgo the football bowl orgy to fly to Cincinnati to start their most ambitious road trip of the season. Loyola will face once-beaten Xavier on Tuesday, then continues on to Philadelphia for games at St. Joseph’s on Jan. 4 and a televised game against unbeaten and 20th-ranked LaSalle on Jan. 6. COPILOT FLEW PLANE, CRASH REPORT SAYS

The autopsy report issued Friday by Dennis DeFelice, Franklin County coroner and prosecutor, also indicated both pilots of United Express Flight 2415 were healthy before the crash. In the crash, copilot Douglas K. McInroe, 25, of Kennewick, suffered ankle and hand injuries in a manner “characteristic of someone handling the controls of the plane,” DeFelice’s report said. He said the injuries “suggest that he had been flying the plane.”

INJURIES: A MATTER OF BODY . . .; ; FOR CARL YASTRZEMSKI, NOT TO BE WORKING FULL TILT IN SPRING TRAINING; IS UNUSUAL. HIS MACHINE OF A BODY DOESN’T SHOW WEAR UNTIL AUGUST. SOMETHING’S; DIFFERENT THIS YEAR, HOWEVER.

This may be a case of sounding the alarm and finding Yaz at Fenway Park on April 14, going 4 for 4, and maybe even stealing a base. If you look only at the physique of [Yaz], who spent a great deal of time this winter on the Nautilus body building equipment in Boca Raton, Fla., it would seem he is in simply marvelous condition. It is a time of year when the last thing you expect to be worried about is Yaz’ physical condition. It gives rise to honest consideration of the notion that even if the end is not around the corner, it won’t be the same for the Red Sox or Yaz this year. Dr. [William Southmayd] said the tenderness in Yaz’ heel could easily be attributed to the breaking of adhesions. Southmayd added that nothing goes away quickly when you get older, and that is one of the major problems facing Yaz. He is a man who in the last three years has been bothered twice by his achilles tendons, back and wrist injuries and hyperextensions of his feet. None of these problems hindered him in spring training as does the current one. It is a situation that bears watching, because the Red Sox are still expecting him to play in the outfield and at first base.

HOT STREAK AWAITS WOMEN’S OPEN GOLF

”Some people aren’t going to make it around in the heat,” Miss Alcott said. ”People who smoke or drink or are overweight are not going to cut the mustard.” ”I personally prefer warm weather to cold but this is even too much for me,” Miss Little said after her practice round today. ”It’s going to be interesting to see who finishes. The ones in better shape are going to be the ones in contention.” ”[Beth Daniel] is about to break out the way we all expect her to,” she said, ”and [Hollis Stacy] is always tough in the Open.” Then Miss Alcott said, ”But look out if I get a good start tomorrow.” Old injuries have taken their toll on the starting field. Judy Rankin, second on the L.P.G.A. career money-list, dropped out this afternoon because of back troubles. Debbie Massey, who finished in a second-place tie with Sandra Palmer in the 1979 Women’s Open, excused herself because of a yearold wrist injury that was acting up. Miss Massey twisted her wrist on the final fairway of the Open a year ago, and it has bothered her off and on ever since.

    [ SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Mother Nature plunked 54 Patrio... ]

Willie Wood took over as Toronto coach this year, cut [Ian Sunter], and the Patriots signed him July 4. Sunter The Punter says he knows little about New England, less about the Patriots and virtually nothing about the punting history of the team. Coach Ron Erhardt is sporting the John McKay look this year – sunglasses and a yellow golf hat (Cohasset GC) with brim turned down. But the look, he says, is more practical than fashionable; the hat is to ward off the sun and the sunglasses “so I won’t be squinting all the time.”. . . Free agents Jon Konecny and John Marzo flunked the physical yesterday morning and were waived while linebacker Barry Burgett, a ninth-round draft choice from Oklahoma, also failed his physical with a wrist injury but will remain with the team for rehabilitation. Tight end Mike House (6-3, 240) from the University of the Pacific was signed to a series of one-year contracts. The eighth-round pick was the last of the 12 Patriot draft choices to come to terms . . . Tops in the 40-yard dash over a slow track were wide receivers John Kimbrough and Preston Brown with 4.62 seconds and 4.67 respectively while among the slowest were rookie defensive lineman Doug McDougald (5.5) and linebacker Bob Golic (5.6) . . . Quick early impression is that rookie QB Jimmy Jordan of Florida State can throw and DE Mike St. Clair (obtained from the Browns) is quick and ready . . . Erhardt showed he means business by keeping the squad on field for almost three hours. The first session also had some contact.

U.S. team wins spot in playoffs

U.S. coach Bob Johnson said, “We were both coming off very tough games, we played the Russians and the Czechs played Canada. “But the difference was that our game against the Russians was not a physical game. The Czech had a very physical match against Canada.” For that reason, the Czechoslovaks were without two of their top players, a swift winger named Pavel Richter and defenceman Radislav Svoboda. Richter missed the match with a shoulder injury, Svoboda with a wrist injury.

    SONIC BOOM MUTES CELTICS, 118-106

This All-Star duo destroyed the Celtics, period. [Lonnie Shelton], who was so corpulent on the Fourth of July that walking from his car to a gymnasium was a marathon jaunt, poured in a season-high 37 points on spectacular 17-for-23 shooting. [Gus Williams], who sat out the entire ’81- 82 season in a contract dispute with owner Sam Schulman (a jubilant press-table spectator), had 36 on his usual asortment of unstoppable jumpers and sneakaway layups. Shelton’s playing time had been restricted last season by a wrist injury. Seattle was always in control, faltering in the second half for a brief spell of five minutes in the third quarter, during which time a nine-point lead (76-67) was turned into a one-point deficit at 81- 80. But they maintained their composure, hitting the Celtics with six quick points (the aforementioned Shelton jumper, a sensational in-your-face fast break flip by Williams and another Shelton jumper), and the game would never be the same again.

CELTICS NOTEBOOK; ARCHIBALD SITS WITH WRIST INJURY

The Trail Blazers, who defeated the Celtics, 123-119, on Super Sunday, were pleased to announce that Calvin Natt would play after missing a game with a sprained ankle . . . Eric Fernsten has not played on this trip, giving him a chance for what Hank Finkel and Steve Kuberski would have labeled a “trippa- zippa;” i.e., a complete trip of DNPs . . . Kevin McHale, who hadn’t been getting the ball in his scoring areas too frequently for a few games, bounced back with a 15-point, 3-block performance against the Warriors . . . The Celtics are 16-9 in the road, fourth best in the NBA . . .

ON BASEBALL PETER GAMMONS; THAT’S EARL, BROTHER

Not that all the questions have been answered. Shortstop, with only rookie Bobby Bonner and Lenn Sakata around, could be a problem. How [Earl Weaver] will position Disco Danny Ford, Al Bumbry and Gary Roenicke in the outfield might be another. So is the bullpen, where Tim Stoddard is experiencing shoulder trouble. But in this era, there are no perfect teams, anyway, Baltimore has what Weaver has blended for six divisional titles and four pennants: pitching and home runs. “This could be as good a starting staff as I’ve had in my five years here,” says pitching coach Ray Miller. [Jim Palmer], who faced the minimum 21 batters in needlepointing the Yankees during his one- hit, seven-inning stint Sunday, remains the nominal first starter at the age of 36, even if physical problems left him with the first losing record (7-8) of his career. The real Big Three consists of Flanagan, recovered from an early knee strain and two years of varied injuries, Scott McGregor and Dennis Martinez. With [Steve Stone] sidelined by an elbow injury, Weaver is talking positively about getting [Stewart] and his immense talent into the rotation by June. “Mr. Everything has done everything down here,” says Weaver. “He’s started and won, pitched long relief and won and saved a game. He’s so damn valuable to us doing that, but if I were to bet, I’d bet he’ll end up a starter.” Weaver thinks his beloved “Dr. Longball” is back. Murray is Murray, one of the great offensive forces in the game. [Ken Singleton] is healthy again after struggling through a .209 second half. Ford is expected to hit his 20-25 homers. Roenicke, who hit 25 homers in 1979 but since then has undergone an elbow operation and endured a wrist injury, says he feels right for the first time since ’79 and has had a big spring. Sakata has surprising power. And, finally, there is [Cal Ripken Jr.]. “He’s unbelievable,” says Weaver of the 21-year- old prodigy. “He’s as good as [Eddie Murray] was as a rookie, and I didn’t think I’d ever say that. He has no holes; he hits the ball down, up, in and out, covers the plate and rips the ball inside, and he’s too intelligent to get fooled more than once. He may make a few mistakes at third base, but he’s good there too. He’s just one of the rare great players with great instincts that comes along once in a managerial career. I’m lucky. I got two, Murray and Ripken.”
