Albus’s 138 Leads Golf
Gene Borek of Metropolis, who won the tournament in 1970, 1973 and 1977, had the best round of the day, a 70, and was at 146. Morris, idle for the year until six weeks ago because of back and wrist injuries and a hernia operation, said: ”I feel confident, even though [Jim Albus] is playing well. I’m hitting a lot of greens.

QUOTATION OF THE DAY
Utah played without Adrian Dantley, the National Basketball Association’s leading scorer, who sat out with a wrist injury. Philadelphia went on a 19-4 burst in the second quarter and built a 68-42 lead on a layup by Andrew Toney with 3:03 left in the period. The 76ers led, 72-56, at halftime, paced by Toney’s 19 points. It was the third straight loss for Utah. Toney had 30 points and Julius Erving 21 for Philadelphia. [Darrell Griffith] had a season-high 37 points, Rickey Green had 26 and Jeff Wilkins 24 for Utah. DENVER (AP) – Alex English had 39 points for Denver, which handed San Diego its 21st straight road defeat. English, the N.B.A.’s fourth leading scorer, has averaged 35.8 points in his last eight games. The Clippers (3-12) have not won on the road since Feb. 20. San Diego pulled to within 7 points at 110-103 with eight minutes to play before English and Kiki Vandeweghe each scored 4 points in a 14-2 surge by Denver that put the Nuggets comfortably ahead, 125-105. WRIST INJURY SIDELINES LINDBERGH
Canada’s most unsung hero – There were a lot of candidates – those who were playing in pain, such as Dave Taylor, who had wrist injuries; those who made personal sacrifices, such as Marcel Dionne, whose wife had a baby the day before he left almost a month ago; and those who joined the airlift but never played, such as goaltender John Garrett. But the winner is goaltender Mike Veisor, who was with the team from the beginning, never played and was never anything less than cheerful.

BASEBALL PETER GAMMONS; CLEAR’S PROBLEM NOT EXACTLY CLEAR
After a meeting that lasted until 3 a.m. Thursday, Cubs general manager Dallas Green gave manager Lee Elia at least two weeks to keep his job amidst rumors that Charlie Fox is about to replace him. “It’s not mismanagement; the players just aren’t doing the job,” said Green, as Bill Buckner had four RBIs and Ron Cey eight RBIs and nine errors going into the weekend . . . Oakland manager Steve Boros says “(Tigers shortstop) Alan Trammell has the best fielding mechanics of any infielder I’ve seen in 20 years. Where Ozzie Smith – as great as he is – set back infielding 20 years, Trammell is trying to bring them back.” . . . When Red Sox slugging prospect Sam Horn found out he’d be sidelined five weeks with a wrist injury, he asked Winston-Salem manager Bill Slack if the club had any community involvement program. “That’s the first time in 20 years I’ve ever heard that question,” says Slack, who made a couple of calls and arranged it so that while the club is on the road, the 19- year-old Horn can do volunteer work for hospitals, schools and shut-ins. “He’s the most awesome talent I’ve seen in all my years in this organization,” says Slack, “but I wasn’t prepared for the type of individual he is.”. . . Jim Eisenreich is playing twice a week for a softball team in his hometown of St. Cloud, Minn. . . . Britt Burns returns to the White Sox rotation tomorrow night against Toronto, finishing his work in the Sarasota extended program league with a no- hitter. His teenage teammates prepared him for his Chicago teammates by making four errors in a 3-1 win. Burns told Rob Gallas of the Arlington (Ill.) Herald that he thinks he’s figured out why he got the arm trouble: sleeping in the nude with the air conditioner on. So he’s now into long johns . . . The White Sox now have Jerry Dybzinski and Alonzo Gray on the left side of the infield to welcome Burns back . . . Indians manager Mike Ferraro convinced that club to grab Pat Tabler when the White Sox decided he wasn’t the answer at third base. With Toby Harrah hurt, Tabler has been a godsend, and when Harrah returns, Ferraro intends to move Tabler to the outfield and eventually sees him as the Cleveland center fielder . . . Toronto’s Dave Stieb is the majors’ winningest pitcher 25 or younger with 52 wins, while Detroit’s Dan Petry (44) is the leading winner 24 or younger.-

LEIGH MONTVILLE; SHEET TIME’ IS THE DANGER FOR THE ATHLETES OF THE MIND
He is 52 years old, [Bob Harkey], and he is an Indy driver. Or was. The message “This interview was taped prior to Bob Harkey’s accident” rolled in constant sequence across the bottom of the screen yesterday morning. Sheet time. Harkey’s injuries include two neck fractures, multiple rib fractures, a bruised lung and serious wrist injuries. His Spirit of Noblesville Coyote whacked the wall at the fourth turn in the first week of practice for today’s race and he will be doing some serious sheet time. He will not be alone. If athletics is supposed to involve a confrontation with fear, however, a stand against all furry things that go bump in the night, then these may be the ultimate athletes. The whines of a John McEnroe, the foot blisters of Alberto Salazar, even the troubles of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the pivot against Moses Malone look small- time compared to sheet time. These are athletes of the mind in these cars, not athletes of the body.

LESLEY VISSER; LET’S FIND CURE FOR AMERICAN STARS’ ALLERGY TO CLAY
- Such as the state of men’s tennis, summer style. When the US Open wentfrom clay and the West Side Tennis Club to Decoturf and the National Tennis Center in 1978, the separation of serve and volley occurred. Now, the big names – John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors – play one, maybe two clay tournaments a year (usually just the French Open), and as a result the whole game has suffered. In Washington last week, the D.C. National Bank Tournament went ahead without (1) its defending champion, Lendl, who was in South Africa winning $300,000 in losing to Jimmy Connors, (2) Wimbledon finalist Chris Lewis, who claimed a neck injury and withdrew, and (3) top-seeded Gene Mayer, who pulled out at the last minute with a wrist injury. Not to mention Yannick Noah, who has been suspended and couldn’t play. – Add these to your college football all-name team: Octavian Sharp of Memphis State, Jitter Fields of Texas, Bushara Bushara of Baylor and Opie Bandy of Arkansas.

Motion-Related Wrist Disorders Traced to Industries, Occupational Groups
Jobs involving repetitive motions of the hand contribute a disproportionate share of occupational diseases and injuries. The 1979 annual survey of the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates 21,900 cases associated with work activities involving repeated motions, vibrations, or pressure. Analysis of workers’ compensation claims reveals that workers in manufacturing, construction, and agriculture are the most at risk. Research performed in a variety of industrial settings supports a positive association between repetitive hand motions and the incidence of various wrist disorders, an association reinforced by workers’ compensation statistics. Some of the findings uncovered include: 1. The number of non-impact wrist injury compensation claims across 26 states reveals that manufacturing produced the greatest number of claims, with meatcutters and butchers heading the list of groups at risk. 2. For non-impact wrist disorders, the percentages of claims submitted by men and by women were very similar. 3. Manufacturing industries produced 23.8 claims per 100,000 workers, while agricultural industries produced a ratio of 9.6 claims per 100,000.

SPORTS HEALTH; BREAKING DOWN THE MYTHS
The injury rate increases as the level of competition increases. About 10 percent of children under 12 suffer sports injuries. Thirty percent of high school competitors miss games because of sports injuries. Seventy-five percent of college athletes suffer injuries, but virtually 100 percent of pro players miss some competition because of their physical ailments. Are women more prone to injury than men? In a study of female cadets at West Point, a similar conclusion was reached. Because the women had been less active physically in high school, their initial rate of stress fracture was 10 percent; in men it was 1 percent. When the physical training program was gradually increased, the female stress fracture rate fell to 3.3 percent. The study also found that the type of sports the female cadets had played did not promote muscular development of their upper extremities. Thus, 92 percent of the women failed the men’s performance scale on upper body strength testing. Once they were given the appropriate training, their upper body performance improved greatly. There are three bones in the body that are notorious nonhealers – theulna in the forearm, the carpal navicular in the wrist, and the tibia, one of the two lower leg bones. They all have a poor blood supply. In 1973, Elmore Smith of the old Buffalo Braves fractured his wrist. Like many wrist injuries, an extensive series of X-rays were required. After all the tests were in, a splint was made, and Elmore, a defensive player by trade, was able to play effectively. But it took eight weeks before the wrist had healed completely. Smith was lucky: About one-third of the time, the fractured ends do not unite.

TONIGHT Leafs v Jets
Leaf update – The Leafs had only 16 healthy skaters Saturday night and they may have trouble matching that total tonight. Centre Bill Derlago, who had a concussion, should be back and forward/defenceman Gary Leeman probably will suit up again despite a wrist injury that prevents him from playing. Winger John Anderson, who has aggravated a groin injury by playing, probably will test it again.

NBA season produces its bouquets, brickbats
Runners-up: [Magic Johnson] (ranks with [Larry Bird] as best players in league); Bernard King (his scoring carried the Knicks all season); Mark Aguirre (second in league in scoring, second to Bird among forwards in assists at 4.6, averages respectable 6.1 rebounds as a small forward); Adrian Dantley (came back from wrist injury to lead league in scoring and lead Jazz into playoffs); and Julius Erving (excellent all-around season). ALL-LEAGUE FIRST TEAM — Forwards: Larry Bird and Julius Erving. Bird because he’s Bird, and Erving — barely ahead of Aguirre — because he may be playing the best all-around basketball of his career. Guards: Magic and Isiah Thomas. Magic led the league in assists (13.1), was fifth in steals, and led his team in rebounding. One could go on forever about his worth. Thomas, who would have been a rookie this season had he not passed up his final two years of college, barely edges out Sidney Moncrief. Thomas tied Clipper Norm Nixon with 11.1 assists per game, was second in steals, is an explosive scorer, and remains the key to the Pistons’ success. True, he commits a lot of turnovers, but most creative guards do.

Prison Officials Win Appeal; Business Schools Nearer Giving Degrees
A federal appeals court reversed Friday a decision that found two Iowa prison officials guilty of depriving an inmate of medication he requested for a wrist injury. Thomas Hahn, an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary, injured his right wrist playing football on the prison grounds in August 1979. Medication was prescribed, but Hahn said he was denied the medication by prison officials. However, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed O’Brien’s ruling, saying, “”The evidence shows that medication was given out by an unnamed third party,” the court said. “”While it may be true that this individual improperly denied Hahn his medication, no evidence exists to show that [Maurice] McLey and [Arnold] Dischler were aware of this denial.”

Wilander was injured a month ago in Sweden while practicing for Wimbledon. He played at Wimbledon, but was eliminated early. Stefan Simonsson will replace Wilander on the team, but is not likely to see action in the second-round World Group match, with the opening singles tomorrow. With Wilander unable to play, Anders Jarryd is expected to share singles duties with Henrik Sundstrom on the home team. Jarryd, ranked 11th in the world in singles, will also play the doubles with rising star Stefan Edberg.
