Oohs and O’s 9th-Grader Christy Alves Is Armed and Dangerous as a Varsity Pitcher
Alves uses five pitches: the rise, the drop, the curve, the straight and the changeup. She has 83 strikeouts in her last six games-42 innings. Alves has pitched in each of Burroughs’ 12 games, allowing 24 hits and 6 earned runs in 77 innings. She also has 132 strikeouts this year. While Alves played for the junior squad, [Dennis Ford] pitched on the senior team. Alves has looked up to Ford ever since. Alves and Ford went 0-for-2 against each other, both striking out once. Alves was the losing pitcher, one of three losses she’s had this year. Because of a wrist injury, Ford has not pitched since that game.

CROSBYS TAKE THEIR NAME AWAY FROM CLAMBAKE
“For 40 years, Bing resisted all attempts to commercialize his yearly gathering of friends,” [Kathyrn] Crosby said in a statement released by a family friend. “Now the wrong elements have seized control of what was Bing’s tournament, and they are determined to transform the Old Clambake into just another corporate sideshow for the PGA. Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros confirmed they will compete against Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson Saturday and Sunday in the $288,000 Australian Skins Game. Organizers had placed Bernhard Langer, winner of the Masters and the Sea Pines Heritage Classic the past two weekends, and Arnold Palmer on standby following reports that Norman was troubled by bronchial asthma and Ballesteros by a wrist injury. A federal judge in Birmingham, Ala., dismissed a $55 million lawsuit that Jan Stephenson filed against her former husband for trying to commit her for psychiatric treatment three years ago while she was in Alabama to play in an LPGA tournament. Attorneys for Stephenson, former husband Larry J. Kolb and another defendant signed court papers to end her defamation of character suit with no money changing hands.

PEOPLE
Golfers Greg Norman of Australia and Seve Ballesteros of Spain confirmed that they would compete against Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson on Saturday and Sunday in the $288,000 Australian Skins Game, an unusual format for a tournament. The organizers had placed Bernhard Langer, winner of the Masters and the Sea Pines Heritage Classic the last two weekends, and veteran Arnold Palmer on standby after reports that Norman still was troubled by bronchial asthma and that Ballesteros had a wrist injury. But Norman and Ballesteros confirmed their availability, with Langer in this week’s Houston Open. Nicklaus won $153,600 with one putt in the inaugural Skins Game in Arizona last year. The first six holes in the Australian event will be worth $12,800 apiece. The next six will be worth $16,000 each, and each of the final six will be worth $19,200. Nine holes will be played each day. If two players tie on a hole, the money will be carried over to the next hole. The money will continue to be carried over until one player wins a hole outright. Organizers say that if the entire $288,000 were to be at stake on the final hole, it would be the biggest single prize in golf history.

Gymnast gets life back on beam
In the past few years, he had been hit by back, knee, shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries. A broken left wrist two years ago left him with tendinitis. An operation earlier this year to remove bone chips has solved that problem. “I feel that I have more of a goal now,” [Curtis Hibbert] said. “I really want to make the world championships. Last year, because of my injuries, I knew I couldn’t make the Olympic team.

Candy wrappers hint hunger strikers didn’t starve
Bob Mandgie, assistant INS district director in San Diego, said the seven holdouts were being confined to an air-conditioned 50- bunk barracks, which has color TV. The seven — two from El Salvador, and one each from Cuba, China, Guyana, Honduras and Peru – - were the only detainees in that barracks, he said. Mandgie said from El Centro that the INS officially declared a hunger strike in progress as of 6 a.m. Thursday, around the time when Border Patrol agents and INS officers removed the 56 men then remaining in the demonstration from a recreation area they had been occupying. In Thursday’s operation to clear the recreation area, Mandgie said, 25 Border Patrol officers and INS agents in riot gear removed the strikers after they refused two requests that they leave. He said three of the detainees resisted. One suffered minor bruises and abrasions in the scuffle, another complained afterward of a wrist injury and a third said his back had been injured.

Elly chases dream around world
Like most young tennis players, Doug Elly has long dreamed of playing the pro tennis tour. The trouble for such dreamers is the odds of making it are closer to an illusion than reality. But few young tennis players have traveled to greater lengths in search of their dream than Elly, who just turned 22. He’s literally been making his way around the globe. After his senior year in 1981, when he went 63-1 at San Dieguito High, Elly spent the summer in Brazil learning the nuances of the clay court game. And four years later — during which he played two injury-plagued seasons at Grossmont College — Elly is leaving next week for Switzerland, where he has a berth reserved to play in the Swiss Satellite pro circuit. Conveniently, Elly is able to live abroad because his father, Ed, works for the United States Diplomatic Corps. Four years ago he was in Brasilia and now he’s in Geneva. The only place better would be Wimbledon. Elly says a wrist injury suffered in the spring will probably keep him from competing in the first Swiss event July 21 at Lion, Switzerland. He was hoping to win a qualifying match at Lion or a week later at Geneva, which would make him eligible for the final three events. But whether or not he claims his Lion and Geneva entries or just winds up as another American summer tourist, Elly did go to the trouble of writing letters and getting coaching references to secure his entry. And don’t forget all the travel expenses. That alone gives his dream a bit more color than most. “I won’t give up until I fall over and die,” Elly said. “I’ll give it two or three more years. I’m starting now for the spring of ’86.” By that time, Elly will be competing for Southwest Missouri State.

How could Darryl Strawberry be in, and Tommy Herr out? Strawberry missed most of the season’s first half with a wrist injury and Herr is among National League leaders in seven of 12 offensive categories. A funny thing happened when all the ballots were tallied. [Eddie Murray] was starting. So were [Rickey Henderson] and Herr. SOMEHOW I PREFER the attitude of Steve Garvey, who, admittedly, may be biased. Being elected an All-Star starter for 10 consecutive seasons — once as a write-in — no doubt colors your thinking.

3 Young Angel Pitchers Learn Some Tough Lessons in 8-3 Loss to Blue Jays
As they say, this one was just bad enough. [Jeff Burroughs] weak looper to left fell in between the Angel trio of shortstop Dick Schofield, left fielder Brian Downing and center fielder Ruppert Jones, kicking up on the Exhibition Stadium artificial surface and dribbling past Jones to the warning track. Center fielder Gary Pettis, sidelined with a wrist injury since June 30, is expected to take batting practice for the first time in a month today. “I’ve played pepper and worked a weight program with it,” Pettis said. “But I still haven’t seen how it will react in a game situation.” . . . Pettis admitted a touch of anxiety as he watched Jeff Burroughs’ game-breaking triple drop in left-center field between Brian Downing and Ruppert Jones. “I wish I could’ve been in there-not only because of that ball, but because I want to contribute again.” Pettis said. “Downing and Jones did the best they could. You never know; I could’ve been playing him (Burroughs) in a different position. It was just a very well-placed ball.” . . . Burroughs, listed generously at 6-1, 200 pounds, is not exactly built for three-base speed. In his 13-year career, Burroughs has hit more than two triples in a season only once.

49ers’ Shell Gets His First Start Sunday
The 49ers cut Dan Bunz, the incumbent strongside linebacker, and Shell is on the spot. The 49ers hope Milt McColl will be ready to step in if Shell has any problems, but McColl has a groin pull now, so there’s no quick help available. Yet, the 49ers are so confident he’ll stay healthy that they cut Bunz in favor of keeping Ron Ferrari, a special-teams player and a backup linebacker in the nickel defense. THE NEON CASTS COLD SHADOWS
[Dave Parker], at 34, has come back to be one of the best players in the game. He is leading the National League in RBIs and doubles, is third in slugging and hits and in the top ten in hitting. On the recent six-game road trip, he had 14 hits – including four homers and four doubles – and 13 RBIs. “I hit .300 five straight years in Pittsburgh, won two batting titles, I had a serious knee operation, was unable to swing the bat right for almost two years because of wrist injuries and, in the end, had to get out of the city,” Parker says. “You couldn’t believe some of the abuse I took. But I guess that’s what came with being baseball’s first million-dollar player.” To see Parker carry the Reds in the shadow of [Pete Rose] – while concerned with such revelations in Pittsburgh that he gave cocaine to Enos Cabell – is a sad reminder that Dave Parker could someday have been dabbling with record books in middle age. Oh, it might have been hard to play in Pittsburgh. Maybe the public asked too much from him. And he was hurt. Parker, Keith Hernandez and many of the other players being pulled into this trial by a hanger-on named Curt the Chef are emblematic of what happened with the whirl of free agency. They were young, good-looking and rich, and they were lured into a lifestyle of young high-living, wealthy, attractive and mobile people (what sickens one here is that their agents, who accepted huge fees off their skills, did so little to prevent all this). By 1983 and 1984, when cocaine ceased being a social high and was clearly a legal means to an end to the ride, players began backing off. No one doubts that Parker andHernandez have quit their habits; their play speaks for them. But now their pasts have come account due.

CHANGES EARN KEYDETS’ APPROVAL
The most interesting changes may occur on defense, where [Eddie Williamson] has installed an eight-man front alignment. Last year’s two leading tacklers, linebackers Glen Ralston (144 stops) and Jimmy Walker (127) are locked into battles for their spots. Ralston is being pushed by sophomore Mike Wood, a Collegiate graduate, for one of the inside spots. Louis Rucker, who was injured most of last year, holds the other inside spot. Walker, who skipped spring practice, is fighting for an outside spot with senior Stu Heishman (1 tackle in ’84). Junior David Redman (7 tackles last year) is the other outside linebacker. A wrist injury suffered by Heishman has helped keep Walker ahead. No one did Williamson any favors with the schedule. After the Virginia game, the Keydets entertain Richmond then travel to North Carolina. That’s two Division I-A teams and a nationally-ranked I-AA club, all before October.

WARNING SIGN – SPEED KILLS; DODGERS WARY OF CARDINALS
One has to wonder how the Dodgers can survive under the pressure created by the likes of [Vince Coleman], who stole 110 bases in 135 attempts, [Willie McGee] (56-82), [Andy Van Slyke] (34-40), Tommy Herr (31- 34) and Ozzie Smith (31-39). As a team, the Cardinals stole third 43 of 53 times. Coleman stole third 26 of 31 times, and twice stole home. Earlier in the year, St. Louis had a string of 33 straight stolen bases. Twice this year the Cardinals stole eight bases in a single game. [Pedro Guerrero] has been bothered by a wrist injury, which sidelined him for 17 games, during which the Dodgers were only 9-8. Guerrero’s 33 home runs tied Steve Garvey for tops on the Dodgers since they moved to Los Angeles. However, Guerrero hit only one home run in the last month.

After 9-0 Loss, a 4-4 Tie Looks Good to Kings L.A. and Black Hawks Repeat Last Sunday’s Outcome, This Time at Forum
Owner Jerry Buss said that Coach [Pat Quinn] and General Manager Rogie Vachon are not in danger of being fired because of the Kings’ slow start this season. “We’ve got a great coach and a great general manager,” Buss said Friday night. “I have a lot of confidence that they’ll get it straightened out by the end of the year, and that’s when it counts.” . . . Vachon denied a report out of Minnesota that he’s about to make a deal with the Minnesota North Stars. The North Stars were said to be ready to trade three players for a King defenseman, either Mark Hardy, who has not played this season because of a wrist injury, or [Jay Wells]. . . . The Kings close out the home stand Tuesday night against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers at the Forum. The Kings played the Oilers to a 4-4 overtime tie in their last game on Nov. 6 at the Forum. In that game, Oiler star Wayne Gretzky was knocked to the ice by Dave Taylor.

‘HONOLULU CONNECTION’ ICES CITY
“That’s kind of a euphemism,” said National Weather Service forecaster Don Finch. It means the balmy breezes that ordinarily stay over the islands have decided to hang out over Anchorage, instead. Finch said the phenomenon is caused by “a ridge of high pressure over the eastern Pacific from California all the way up to British Columbia.” The pressure forces the warm air north, where it collapses what little snow has fallen on Anchorage this year into granite-hard layers of ice and causes major headaches for Zeke Thornton. “Historically, the ice has always affected people … there are lots of falls, lots of ankle injuries, lots of wrist injuries and fractures where people reach out” to try to avoid falling and hurt themselves in the process.
