BULLS NOTES
Every Bulls player and coach received a VCR from the team for Christmas. “Now there’s no excuse not to watch tapes at home,” said vice president of operations Jerry Krause. . . . Cleveland’s Phil Hubbard, bothered by a mysterious wrist injury, will not play tonight against the Bulls. The wrist is not broken, but Hubbard is unable to use it and will visit a specialist today. . . . The Bulls’ two overtime games this season were with Cleveland.

A HIGH-STICKING EPIDEMIC; SIMMER’S EYE INJURY BRINGS LEAGUE-WIDE PROBLEM INTO FOCUS
QUICK QUOTES – “Hartford will make the play-offs. They want it that badly. But I can’t tell you which Adams team won’t.” – Montreal coach Jean Perron . . . “It’s like a guy washing windows – take one step back to admire your work and you’re gone.” – New Jersey’s Doug Sulliman, looking ahead after the Devils ended an eight-game losing streak . . . “Do you have something in a Pierre Cardin?” – [Mike O'Connell] checking out the possible use of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar- style goggles . . . “There must have been some cosmic fallout affecting us. Halley’s Comet is the only explanation I have for this game.” – Edmonton coach Glen Sather after an 11-9 loss in Toronto last week. It was the highest-scoring game in the 53-year history of Maple Leaf Gardens. Edmonton defenseman Paul Coffey was on the ice for seven of Toronto’s 11 goals . . . “They made me look like a brain surgeon.” – [Brad Park] after some line changes he made turned into six goals and his first victory . . . “He definitely saved his family from a vacation in Siberia.” – Minnesota defenseman Gordie Roberts, talking about the Soviet referee after the North Stars’ overtime loss to the Central Red Army team. The referee gave Craig Hartsburg of Minnesota a game misconduct for shooting the puck at him . . . “I’m sorry I did it. It’s very embarrassing,” – Calgary’s DougRisebrough after shredding the jersey of Edmonton’s Marty McSorley’s with his skates in the penalty box after a fight. Risebrough soaked McSorley’s jersey in water to soften it and then ripped it on his skates. The jersey now hangs in the Edmonton dressing room. The clincher in Marcel Dionne’s decision to wear an eye shield was when his 10-year old daughter, Lisa, came home from school with a playmate and said, “That’s my dad, look at his scars.” . . . “There were three defensemen on the two Soviet teams who would win the Norris Trophy in our league – Fetisov and Kasatonov of the Central Army team and Bilyaletdinov of the Dynamo,” says [Harry Sinden] . . . Referee Bryan Lewis, who was prevented from working his 1,000th NHL game because of a serious wrist injury more than a month ago, will reach that plateau Wednesday in the Montreal Forum. That’s where he refereed his first NHL game.

Cubs, Sox set to spring into the 1986 season Frey vows to regain attitude of winners
What the Cubs lost were 60 starts by their injured five-man rotation and 242 man-games because of injuries to position players. What the Cubs lost were 84 games and three positions in the standings. For those who have forgotten the gruesome details, here is a rundown of the letdown: Rick Sutcliffe was on the DL three times, once in May and twice in July. His miseries included hamstring and groin muscle pulls and a shoulder so sore he couldn’t throw. Steve Trout was on the DL in July and August for an elbow nerve problem, which also made him ineffective for more than a month. Dennis Eckersley had shoulder tendinitis which put him on the DL in August and September and left him ineffective for nearly two months. Scott Sanderson finished the season on the DL because of a torn knee ligament. He also had back and elbow problems which kept him out of several starts. Dick Ruthven finished the season on the DL with a broken toe, suffered from a line drive. Dave Gumpert, called up from the minor leagues to replace injured pitchers, was on the DL for a month with a groin muscle pull. Brian Dayett, a promising youngster, missed from June 20 on because of ankle surgery. Bobby Dernier missed a month with foot surgery. He had more surgery done following the season. Gary Matthews was on the DL twice, once for knee surgery, once for a hamstring pull. Gary Woods injured his shoulder and spent a stretch on the DL. Rookie Billy Hatcher was out more than two weeks with a wrist injury while trying to work his way into the injured outfield scene. Jody Davis never went on the disabled list but was out 12 games with a stomach disorder that sapped his strength.

New foe for Shawn called tough one
[Reggie Miller] suffered a wrist injury on the weekend and [Shawn O'Sullivan]‘s manager, Mike Trainer, said yesterday that [Diomedes Colome] will provide even stiffer competition for O’Sullivan. “One of Miller’s four defeats was to Colome,” Trainer said. “Colome has a record of 21 wins and three losses with 13 knockouts and this is clearly a major step for Shawn. He’ll have to be at his best to defeat Colome because Colome will be the most aggressive fighter Shawn has faced.” O’Sullivan, Trainer and O’Sullivan’s trainer, Peter Wylie, will arrive in Dartmouth Saturday to conclude preparations for the bout.

Mathis Senior Golf Tournament His Fast Start Surprises New Old-Timer Douglass
[Dale Douglass], who has averaged 67.7 strokes for his seven rounds, has led in each of the last six rounds. In his first round two weeks ago at Sun City, Ariz., Douglass shot a 67 that was good for second place. Most of the talk, though, is about Douglass. After earning only about $45,000 in his last six years as a part-time player on the regular PGA Tour, Douglass was hardly expected to take the Senior Tour by storm when he became eligible March 5. Even he is surprised. In the late 1960s and early ’70s, Douglass was competitive on the regular tour. In one 10-month span, he won his three tournaments, beginning with the Azalea Open in 1969. But painful neck and wrist injuries slowed him when he was at his peak.

LANG MAKES A BANG IN WESCO TENNIS
Were it not for recurring back and wrist injuries seven years ago, Jenna Lang may have been tumbling her way to college later this year instead of hoping her tennis skills can further her education. Lang, a senior at Meadowdale High, gave up the aches and pains associated with gymnastics to concentrate solely on her tennis game. With Western Conference league matches set to start next Wednesday, Lang is hoping to advance to the state AA tennis championships for the fourth straight year, and for her success to attract the attention of some collge coach with an athletic schoalrship to offer. Lang clearly would like to get an offer from a bigger university and is determined to earn that free ride by making her final year of high school her best. She finished seventh at the state AA tournament last year. Her first state appearance was in 1983 when she played doubles with her sister, Lucinda.

Padres’ McReynolds Still Shows Reluctance to Play Role of Leader
[Kevin McReynolds], the would-be San Diego superstar whose agent once compared him to Darryl Strawberry and Don Mattingly, wouldn’t do anything last year. Maybe it was Manager Dick Williams’ fault. Maybe it was McReynolds’ wrist injury from the previous season’s playoffs. Maybe he didn’t like baseball. No one on the team understood him, except rookie John Kruk, who had been McReynolds’ roommate in Class A. McReynolds doesn’t talk about himself, but Kruk said: “What’s he like? That’s a good question. What’s he like. Hmmmm.” Kruk went on to list some virtues, some flaws.

THE NEW 49ERS
LARRY ROBERTS, DE, Alabama, 6-2 5/8, 255. His 4.69 time for the 40 impressed the 49ers, who think he can be a successor to Fred Dean as a pass-rusher. Originally recruited to college as a tight end, he’s a good athlete who uses his quickness to get around offensive tackles, but needs more strength. Bill Walsh: “You’d like a defensive end to be a little taller, but he’s got everything else, and the explosive quickness is what we needed.” Eighth-rated DE by National combine, which scouts for 19 NFL teams, fourth-rated (but at DT) by Blesto combine, which scouts for seven teams. 2nd round, 39th player overall. STEVE WALLACE, OT, Auburn, 6-5 1/8, 267. Had knee and wrist injuries in college. Good athlete who plays hard and should get better because he’s young (turned 21 last December). Had a good Senior Bowl. Needs work on pass blocking and must improve upper body strength, but could come on. Walsh said the knee is fine but wrist injury could still be a problem. Walsh: “He had the best time of all the offensive linemen in the agility drills (during the workouts for draft-eligible players). He’s very nimble and very quick.” Rated ninth by National, eighth by Blesto among OTs. 4th round, 101st player. KEVIN FAGAN, DT, Miami-Fla., 6-3 5/8, 267. Excellent quickness before senior year was wrecked by injuries – hip cartilage injury and back problem, then major knee injury in Sugar Bowl. Dedicated weightlifter, strong and physical. Rehabilitation from knee surgery is on schedule, but the 49ers do not expect Fagan to be able to play this year, and that’s why they were able to get him late. Walsh: “He played like a first-round-type player in college. Super quick and explosive. He’s an excellent prospect – could be as good a pick as we had in this draft.” Rated sixth by Blesto, fifth by National, among DTs, 4th round, 102nd player.

DUNSTON MAKES ‘MIRACLE RECOVERY’
The wrist injury suffered by shortstop Shawon Dunston Monday night is not as serious as first feared. “Shawon is better; he had a miracle recovery,” said manager Jim Frey before Tuesday night’s game. “Last night it appeared that he had a serious problem; this afternoon it doesn’t seem quite as serious. He’ll probably be able to play in a day or so. He says he has a sore thumb and sore wrist.” — Third baseman Ron Cey should be available to play again in a day or two. He suffered a bruised right hand when he was hit by a pitch from Montreal’s Andy McGaffigan Sunday.

Ergonomics
Ergonomics deals with the relationship between people and machines, fitting the person to the job, and the job to the person for optimal productivity. For example, movement should be incorporated into a task whenever possible to prevent discomfort. A padded mat will reduce circulation problems and fatigue when prolonged standing is required. For those who must sit, a well-designed operator chair is a necessary part of the workstation. Lifting tasks should be designed to reduce back injuries. Reducing exposure of the hand to repetitive motion can reduce hand and wrist injuries. The control of certain environmental conditions can affect employees’ performance positively, including: 1. the reduction of direct or reflected noise, 2. the careful positioning of light sources, and 3. the use of prescription glasses for specific jobs. As the use of video display terminals (VDT) increases, efforts should be made to assure that: 1. operators are not too isolated, 2. there is enough ventilation, and 3. the keyboard height is comfortable. Wright gets chance to win outfield job
NEW YORK – George Wright started in centre field last night, and Herman Winningham sat out. Since arriving last week, Wright has now had two starts in centre and three in left. Tim Raines’s wrist injury made it a little easier for manager Buck Rodgers to give Wright a good look. Winningham, no dope, knows what that means. Wright opened some eyes Monday by tripling in his first-ever at-bat against Dwight Gooden, and by making a strong throw from the left-field corner to cut down Gary Carter, who thought he had doubled. But Wright also fanned with the bases loaded, and conceded that Gooden had “made me chase some bad pitches.” . . .

Gwynn to be starter in the All-Star Game
The announcement came on a day when [Tony Gwynn] hit his ninth home run of the season. Not necessarily for his power, however, did Gwynn earn 987,943 votes and a spot in the National League outfield with Darryl Strawberry of the New York Mets and Dale Murphy of the Atlanta Braves. Because of a wrist injury, Gwynn got only one at-bat and grounded out against Jack Morris. In his first All-Star appearance in 1984, Gwynn went 1-for-3. “I always voted for him,” Gwynn said. “The one year he wasn’t on the ballot, we all punched out the hole that said `Write-in’ and wrote [Steve Garvey]‘s name there. That was the year (1974) he became the first write-in ever to start the All-Star Game (Garvey’s first). Not only that, but he was the MVP that year.”

A look at the 1986 bucs // How the Bucs fare in each position
Outlook: [Steve] Young will start camp as the No. 1 quarterback, but Bennett hasn’t dismissed the possibility of [Steve] DeBerg being No. 1 when camp ends. Young will start the first preseason game, DeBerg the second. The battle pits Young’s youth and mobility – he runs a 4.6 40 – against DeBerg’s nine years of experience with three teams, including the past two leading the Bucs offense. Running back Outlook: Bennett is hoping he’ll find the fast receiver he wants in the group of free agents in camp. For now, the starters, [Kevin] House and [Gerald] Carter, will do fine; both are steady and experienced. [Phil] Freeman, a productive kick returner as a rookie and now recovered from a wrist injury, will help in the speed department. Ex-Oiler Walls, a 4.3 speedster, impressed the staff in the June passing camp; [Jesse] Bendross, caught in a numbers game in San Diego, came in an off-season trade. Tight end Outlook: Definitely a team strength, although one starter will lose his job because of the new offense. Bell was the second tight end, or U-back, last season, but his excellent year (43 catches before a late-season knee injury) puts him in position to challenge the veteran [Jimmie] Giles for the starting tight end spot. Giles, entering his 10th year, also caught 43 balls last season, eight for touchdowns. [Calvin] Magee made it as a free agent last year and filled in well at both tight end spots. Witte is valuable on special teams. Offensive tackle

Parents keep silent when abused by kids
In typical cases parents are spat at, kicked, punched, bitten, attacked with knives and razor blades, resulting in black eyes, broken noses and wrist injuries. Usually the attacker is an adolescent, according to three specialists who analyzed 35 cases at the Herold hospital in Paris. Most of the 33 boys and two girls were only children or the eldest of the family and had begun to show signs of aggressive behavior and to tyrannize their parents from the age of 11. Specialists divide childen who batter their parents into three distinct categories. Firstly, those with a psychiatric disorder, which may show itself, for example, in the child demanding a parent to observe strange rituals – like 13-year old Nicholas, who forces his mother to count out loud for hours at a time.

Downing’s anxiety pays off for Angels
[Jeffrey Leonard] LEAVES — Jeffrey Leonard, the San Francisco Giants outfielder hampered by a wrist injury since early in the season, was placed on the team’s 21-day disabled list. Leonard will undergo surgery next week to repair tendon damage and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, said Giants president Al Rosen. “It’s a tremendous blow to lose a player of Jeffrey’s caliber. He’s been the heart and soul of this team,” Rosen said. The Giants recalled outfielder-first baseman [Mike Aldrete] to take Leonard’s place on the roster. Leonard batted .279 with six homers and 42 RBI through 89 games.
