TEMPLE’S BOWLES A SURPRISE FOR REDSKINS
Following a pre-game fight between Cliff Johnson and Damaso Garcia, the Blue Jays turned in a sloppy effort Tuesday night in losing to the Kansas City Royals. Johnson, the club’s veteran designated hitter who is currently on the disabled list with a wrist injury, told Garcia that if he wanted him to leave the cage, he’d have to come and get him. The feisty Dominican took up the challenge and a brief scuffle ensued. Other Blue Jays standing around the cage quickly intervened and Garcia was taken into the team’s clubhouse by shortstop Tony Fernandez.

Oil Can Returns but Bosox Lose Again; Orioles Win / AMERICAN LEAGUE
Carlton Fisk hit a two-run homer and Richard Dotson flirted with a no-hitter for five innings last night, helping the Chicago White Sox spoil the return of Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd with a 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park. The pregame skirmish was touched off when [Damaso Garcia] told [Cliff Johnson] he should not be taking batting practice with the regulars. Johnson, the club’s veteran designated hitter who is currently on the disabled list with a wrist injury, told Garcia that if he wanted him to leave the cage, he’d have to come and get him. Garcia took up the challenge and a brief scuffle ensued. Other Blue Jays quickly intervened and Garcia was taken into the team’s clubhouse.

Swim team hit by stomach disorders World aquatic championships kick off in Madrid
As the opening ceremonies took place in the Plaza de Toros de Madrid, such key swimmers as Sudbury’s Alex Baumann and Calgary’s Mark Tewksbury were suffering from stomach disorders – and it may get worse before it gets better. The only element missing from his remarkable career is that Baumann has never had the opportunity to swim against Eastern Bloc athletes in a major international competition. His gimpy shoulder prevented him from competing in the 1982 world championships and boycotts kept him out of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and the Iron Curtain swimmers from the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Ottawa’s John Nash, 24, will not compete in the 10-metre tower event because of a wrist injury, but will be active on the three- metre board. His place on the tower will be taken by David Bedard, 20, of Pointe Claire, Que. Nash and Bedard won silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in the three-metre and 10-metre events, respectively.

GIANTS DOWN ON ‘AILING’ BROWN
One hour before a game between the New York Mets and the Giants at Shea Stadium, Brown–at .321, the team’s leading hitter–pulled himself out of the starting lineup. Then, in a meeting with manager Roger Craig, trainer Mark Letendre and assistant general manager Ralph Nelson, Brown announced he wanted an arthrogram on his sore left shoulder, knowing such a medical procedure would finish him for the season. Brown’s decision is said to have been influenced by Giant teammate Jeffrey Leonard. Since a wrist injury knocked him out for the season, Leonard has said his injury could have been avoided had the Giants’ front office insisted on off-season surgery last winter. — Outfielder Andre Dawson, frequently rumored to be headed to the White Sox, says he has turned down a three-year, $2 million contract offer from the Montreal Expos. “It was a drastic reduction,” Dawson told the Montreal Gazette. Dawson is in the final year of a $3 million, three-year deal. Expos general manager Murray Cook denied any formal offer was made. The Expos have been trying to trade Dawson, who now says he doesn’t expect to be dealt to another team. “If that was going to happen, it would have happened by now,” he said. Dawson reaches a milestone Thursday when he becomes a “5-and-10 man”–10 years in the majors, five with one team–giving him the power to veto a trade.

1. Mother McAuley–Was there a doubt? With Traci Broadway, Janet Moylan, Marybeth Sutliffe, Jennifer Rees, Colleen Boyle and power-hitting Tricia Tadin returning from last year’s state champion, the Illinois High School Association would have to cancel the state tournament to keep the Mighty Macs from their seventh title in eight years. 3. St. Charles–Replacing graduated All-Stater Lisa Vitali from last year’s state runner-up won’t be easy, but with senior hitter Sue Soderberg recovered from the wrist injury that kept her out of the state tournament, the Saints still have plenty of firepower. Middle hitter Julie Viernow heads a holdover cast that also includes setter Julie Ruebush and hitters Kim Stage and Lisa Fink. Keep an eye on sophomore Stephanie Zollicoffer. 4. Sandburg–Last year the Eagles, with nine juniors on the roster, suffered the growing pains of inexperience. This year those juniors have grown up and should be ready to inflict pain on opponents. The Eagles include 1985 starters Jennifer Fisler, Amy Thoss, Karen Collins, Renee Maheras and Dawn Lynch.

“Weather Key Factor’ River City Roundup Finale Attracts Some Big Crowds
An estimated 13,750 persons participated in the final day’s events of the fifth annual River City Roundup, but they didn’t see one of the more unusual happenings Sunday. A hot-air balloon pilot suffered a wrist injury in a rough landing near Crescent, Iowa, about 45 minutes after lifting off from Ak-Sar-Ben Field in Omaha. While lamenting that injury and an injury suffered by a volunteer worker at Ak-Sar-Ben, Roundup Executive Director Fred Colanino said, overall, he was delighted with the five-day event.

SPORTSPEOPLE BRIEFS
Philadelphia 76er forward Charles Barkley was admitted to Temple University Hospital Wednesday with bleeding in his stomach area and will be out for at least a week. Barkley, who had 34 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists in the 76ers’ 125-121 loss to the Indiana Pacers Tuesday, fell with two minutes left in the second overtime. Dr. Michael Clancy, the team doctor, said the internal bleeding could have been the result of damage to the liver or spleen. . . . The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed forward Phil Hubbard and placed him on injured reserve. He has a wrist injury. — California football coach Joe Kapp, whose team has won only 19 games in five years, has been told by university officials he will not be asked to return after the season. Karl Has Reunion With Cavs – And Those Bad Memories / NBA NOTEBOOK
He was coaching out the last year on his contract, two of his key players signed late, a wrist injury ended sixth man Phil Hubbard’s season after only 23 games, there was constant friction between [George Karl] and young centers Mel Turpin and Keith Lee, and Karl was constantly second-guessed by general manager Harry Weltman. Karl became a strong candidate for the University of Pittsburgh coaching job, which angered Weltman even more. Weltman finally fired Karl with a 25-42 record. Soon, Weltman had been fired, too. Weltman often disagreed with Karl’s personnel decisions, but Karl says Weltman vaguely expressed his own ideas. “I never understood what Harry wanted from me,” Karl said. “Maybe I should have asked.”

Mets acquire more power, make deal for Padres’ McReynolds
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (UPI) – The New York Mets capped the winter meetings in championship style Thursday, acquiring young slugger Kevin McReynolds in an eight-player deal with the San Diego Padres. McReynolds, after marathon talks and several proposed versions of the trade, came to the Mets with left-handed reliever Gene Walter and minor-league infielder Adam Ging. The Mets view McReynolds as their new centre fielder, replacing Len Dykstra. McReynolds helped the Padres win the 1984 National League pennant, but his wrist injury weakened them for the World Series and they lost in five games.

PRO BOWL CAPS LONG ROAD BACK FOR WARNER
Curt Warner’s return to the Pro Bowl is a reflection of how far the Seattle running back has come from his knee surgery of two years ago. Warner was selected along with four teammates – wide receiver Steve Largent, defensive end Jacob Green, linebacker Fredd Young and kick-returner Bobby Joe Edmonds. Warner and Largent were named as starters, Young and Green as backups. It was the sixth selection for Largent, who missed the 1979 game because of a wrist injury. Largent holds the Pro Bowl record with 15 receptions, including a game-record eight last February.

Normally quiet Santos finds himself just a bit bowled over
Santos would play that game with some extra incentive, and sometimes that causes players to overplay. But of all things, Santos would play almost three quarters of that game with a broken bone in his wrist. He suffered a chipped bone and strained ligaments in his right, throwing wrist in the second quarter when an opponent’s helmet struck his down-turned wrist after he released the ball. The Aztecs won 38-34, but they lost their quarterback. The wrist injury kept Santos out of one non-conference game — a 17-10 loss to Stanford. Thanks to an off week in the schedule and extra work done by SDSU trainer Don Kaverman and the team’s doctors, Santos was back in the lineup for the Aztecs next conference game, a 15-10 win over Texas-El Paso. Santos, a 6-2, 200-pound junior, and [Jim Sweeney] worked out together when the two met at Fresno over the summer. Santos is from Selma, a small town near Fresno. So Santos knows a little bit about what Sweeney went through on his way to breaking [Doug Flutie]‘s record.

Problems? Stars have plenty // Start with penalty killing, goalies, injuries, lack of goals
The most damaging of all the North Stars’ injuries was [Neal Broten]‘s dislocated shoulder, which kept him out for 20 games. [Brian Bellows] and [Scott Bjugstad] were most ineffective early in the season before Bellows (seven goals) left the lineup with a wrist injury and Bjugstad (three goals) was sent to the minors just after Christmas. “Bellows, Bjugstad and [Steve Payne] (no goals) all have track records of scoring goals and they aren’t scoring,” [Lou Nanne] said. “You can’t replace guys like those.” Special teams/ The penalty killing has been terrible. [Lorne Henning] and Nanne point to injuries to Broten, Bellows and Bjugstad’s ineffectiveness as the reason for the Stars’ drop from seventh in the league (79.3 percent) at the end of last season to 17th this year. The Stars are giving up an average of 1.13 power-play goals a game. The power play has dropped from the start of the season. For a brief time, the Stars were over 30 percent; now they are down to 24.8. The most effective unit recently has been Graham-Acton-MacLellan. Longest goal-scoring streak/[Dino Ciccarelli], six games (Start of season, Oct. 11 to Oct. 22nd, NHL’s second-longest streak behind Mario Lemieux’s seven). Ciccarelli scored 10 goals in those first six games. Longest assist streak/[Craig Hartsburg], nine games, 14 assists (Nov. 22 to Dec. 11).
