How Rick keeps going through the bitter cold
The wheels of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion odyssey have been turning for almost 22 months. By the time night fell Jan. 13, Rick Hansen had tallied 35,404 kilometres (22,000 miles) so far in his Man in Motion world tour. Today, teacher Dave Martin tells Starting Point readers about some of the special equipment Hansen needs during his trek through the cold Canadian winter. When the tour reached the halfway point in Melbourne, Australia, in February, 1986, a variety of shoulder and wrist injuries, along with tendonitis, forced Hansen to reduce his daily wheeling schedule. Demands on his time from local groups along the route had also been much greater than expected. Rick realized he needed more time to explain the project’s goals. For increased traction, Hansen’s new chair is equipped with BMX-style bicycle tires. A series of bicycle chains connect the back and front wheels to give the chair four-wheel drive. Chains may be added if the road is especially slippery. Because Hansen has to wear extra clothing during the winter months, the new chair is also wider than the one he used during the summer.

Ex-official admits theft of $11,000
Prosecutor Mark Burtner said witnesses told of [Marcelino Reyes] weaving from lane to lane and not hitting his brakes before his 1979 Cadillac smashed into a Chevrolet halted at a stop sign on FM 2920 in northwest Harris County. Burtner said an insurance company paid the [Duane Smothers] $25,000 for their injuries, and $18,000 of it went immediately for medical bills. The rest has been used for therapy for Mrs. Smother’s leg and wrist injuries. In two tape-recorded confessions, Ortiz, a former secretary-clerk in the Galveston County district attorney’s office, admitted repeatedly urging [Wayne Raymond Messinger] to kill her ex-husband. She told investigators she promised to marry Messinger if he eliminated Ortiz, with whom she still lived despite a divorce.

NORFOLK’S RESERVES KEY IN BATTLE WITH KY. WESLEYAN
In any discussion about the Spartans (28-2), potential All-American and NBA draft pick Ralph Tally usually comes up. Tally, [Barry Mitchell] and center [Matt Henson] are seniors. Each was part of last year’s NCAA effort that was stopped in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Sacred Heart. That was as far as the Spartans had advanced in the NCAA tournament. [Antonio Stith], who sports a gold tooth and grew up a 10-minute drive from the Spartan campus, came to Norfolk State from perennial Group AAA contender Booker T. Washington. Stith’s nickname, “Red,” was given to him at birth by his father. He appears placid on the court and off it. Unlike most freshmen who handle the ball a lot, Stith doesn’t cough it up frequently. He has committed 24 turnovers while playing 480 minutes. Stith is shooting 71 percent from the line despite a wrist injury suffered late in the season.

Leonard’s New Look / But Giants’ Outfielder Retains His Sense of Style
Team President Al Rosen and Manager Roger Craig have always regarded [Jeffrey Leonard] as a leader, but his is a subtle leadership. Leonard doesn’t deal in Mickey Rooney-type, “Hey, gang, let’s put on a show,” stuff, because it wouldn’t sell. He woofs and tweets in the clubhouse, holding court from his locker, directing the traffic about him. When Craig came, however, Leonard knew right away that this was someone worth playing for. Craig got him to turn his hat around, bill to the front, and Leonard did so without a squawk. The attitude commonly known as “Humm-Babe” fit Leonard perfectly, although, true to form, he has rejected the slogan itself on general principle. “Bleep Humm-Baby,” he said, “we’re the Shoot-Fire Rocks.” Uhh, sure. That’s good enough for Craig, whose admiration for Leonard is evidenced by the fact that the manager cites his wrist injury as a significant reason why the Giants didn’t stay in the race. Craig isn’t fond of alibis, but Leonard’s injury is too good to let lie.

POWER SURVIVES A SCARE BC QUARTERBACK COMES BACK AFTER SPRING WRIST INJURY
For this budding Cinderella story, the clock struck midnight in a hurry. [Mike Power] got up slowly after a run and hobbled off the field with a broken metatarsal bone in his left foot. His replacement and competitor for the No. 1 slot this year, Mark Kamphaus, tore a ligament in his left thumb the following week against Penn State, paving the way for the much-maligned Shawn Halloran to resurrect himself and lead the Eagles to a 9-3 record and a Hall of Fame Bowl victory over Georgia. According to athletic director Bill Flynn, a switch in structural engineering contractors, coupled with bad winter weather, caused the delay. Originally, Geiger Associates had the contract, but the collapse of the Pontiac Silverdome roof resulted in Geiger’s loss of insurance. Weidlinger Associates took over the BC assignment, and the subsequent redesign of the blueprints set the project back. BC recruiting director Barry Gallup said the Eagles may be close to landing former SMU receiver Mitchell Glieber, son of Frank Glieber, the late CBS sportscaster. Glieber, a redshirt freshman with three years of eligibility left, played against BC in last year’s 31-29 Mustang win over BC and was projected as a starter this year before the recruiting scandal canceled SMU’s season. Glieber, who visited BC last weekend and is reputed to have excellent hands and quickness, also is considering Texas. GIULIO; 04/02 NIGRO ;04/03,14:49 BC03

Red Sox Journal Gorman seeks relief for overloaded roster
The Bosox could be in need of three roster spots if OIL CAN BOYD and MARTY BARRETT are ready to come off the disabled list and, as expected, they sign catcher RICH GEDMAN a week from tomorrow. Boyd is slated to throw a simulated game, totalling about 60 pitches, today in what presumably will be his final test before he comes off the disabled list. Barrett, sidelined by a wrist injury, already is ready to come off the DL, but will only be eligible to do so on Sunday. There was one possibly telltale hint last night in that reserve outfielder MIKE GREENWELL is down to catch Boyd’s simulated game today – indicating that the Sox might buy some time by cutting down to two catchers by trading or sending out either DAVE SAX or DANNY SHEAFFER.

WRIST INJURY JOLTS VCU’S PETTWAY
Pins were inserted into the joint Sunday morning in a procedure performed at the Medical College of Virginia. George Borden, VCU’s director of sports medicine, said the recovery period will be lengthy. Borden said [Bruce Pettway] will probably spend 12 weeks with his wrist in a cast, and another six in rehabilitative therapy. Ram Coach Mike Pollio said Pettway might not be available until November. [Tim Barker], a freshman from Salisbury, Md., knocked in all three VCU runs in a 3-2 conquest of Virginia Tech in Friday’s regular-season finale. He produced the game-winner with a two-out single in the 12th inning. Five days earlier, Barker launched a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth as the Rams rallied from a 9-4 deficit to score a 10-9 victory over Sun Belt Conference archrival Old Dominion. MISCELLANY: A ruling is imminent on the eligibility appeal filed by VCU on behalf of senior forward Pete Strayhorn. VCU insiders hold little hope that

THE TEAM BEHIND MAN IN MOTION
Don Alder, 30 – Alder was the boyhood friend who was travelling back from a fishing trip with [Rick Hansen] when the pickup truck they were riding in flipped, leaving Hansen a paraplegic. Alder was also one of the original team that set out from Vancouver in March, 1985, on the Man in Motion world tour. A musician turned wheelchair mechanic for the tour, Alder put out a 14-song demo with a partner before leaving on the tour and did television and radio jingles. He hopes to return to the music industry. Amanda Reid, 27 – As Rick Hansen’s fiancee, Reid is perhaps the best known of the road crew. She is the daughter of former Expo commissioner-general Patrick Reid. A physiotherapist, Reid left her job at G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre to join the tour in Oregon when Hansen was first plagued by a wrist injury. Reid expects to be busy this summer planning and preparing for the couple’s Oct. 10 wedding. She has also written articles on her work for some physiotherapy journals and hopes to expand her writing into a book or text for other physiotherapists.

Hernando’s Woods heads North Suncoast squad // Ridgewood places three players on the first-team Series: Baseball
Hernando leadoff batter Tony Carter, known for his blazing speed, stole just eight bases but scored over 30 runs. Carter didn’t need to take chances on the bases with the area’s leading home run hitter and RBI man batting a couple spots behind him. Those players who bat ahead of Tyrone [Woods] in the order also score with amazing frequency. Though the Leopard junior was limited to just 19 games because of a wrist injury early in the year, he still drove in 38 runs, hit 11 homers and batted .468. More than half of his hits went for extra bases and, on the rare occasions he was on first base, [Tyrone] Woods was a perfect 8-for-8 in steal attempts. “In my opinion, he’s the best natural hitter around. He can hit for power, hit for average and drive in runs,“ said [Ernie] Chatman, who recently resigned as baseball coach. “He’s got good hands, with an above average arm. He can steal bases and play a number of positions. He’s got some of the best tools that I’ve seen in a while.“

On the major league trade scoreboard, it’s Mets 1, Padres 0
Nobody is joking now. Since his arrival at spring training, [Jefferson] has suffered a wrist injury, a sprained ankle and a bad shoulder. He had one confrontation with [Larry Bowa] just before the season that ended with a long conversation in Bowa’s hotel room. Another ended several weeks ago with Jefferson being carried out of a Pittsburgh clubhouse. The net result is that the Padres have been forced to play the first third of the season without [Kevin Mitchell], without Jefferson and, of course, without [Kevin McReynolds]. “It’s been a tough transition period for Jefferson and Mitchell,” [Jack McKeon] said. “Some guys take longer to get acclimated than others.”

Yes for Eli, Rock and Hubie, No to the Heater
CINCINNATI – Expo players were glad to learn yesterday that three of their teammates had been named to the 1987 all-star squad. But there was also some outrage over the omission of Neal Heaton and Andres Galarraga. Heaton was the first National League pitcher to reach the 10-victory plateau this year, doing it the same day as Chicago’s Rick Sutcliffe. His ERA before last night’s game was 4.30, well above than the 3.45 mark posted by Met lefty Sid Fernandez (9-5) who was chosen. Met manager Davey Johnson, because his team went to the World Series last year, is the NL skipper for the All-Star Game. [Hubie Brooks], a former Met, said he hadn’t expected to be named. “I’m surprised I’m on, since I haven’t played that much (due to an April wrist injury). And I’m surprised Neal’s not on.

[Tony Bernazard], 30, set career highs with a .301 batting average, 17 home runs, 73 RBIs, 28 doubles, 169 hits and 562 at bats last season. A wrist injury has slowed him this season, and he went into the All-Star break hitting .234 with 30 RBIs and 11 home runs. The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer and The (Akron) Beacon Journal both reported this week that Bernazard is the subject of trade talks. Indians’ Vice President Joe Klein has not commented on the reports.

Don Mattingly on the sidelines with wrist injury
If the New York Yankees’ first baseman isn’t setting home run records, he’s setting records for extra-base hits. If it’s not extra- base hits, it’s putouts, as it was Monday night when [Don Mattingly] tied a major-league record with 22 putouts in a nine-inning game. “I told Lou (Piniella, the Yankee manager) I didn’t think I could help offensively,” Mattingly said. “I did make a few plays defensively. It didn’t hurt to hit in batting practice, but it hurts to have to make a quick decision at the plate.” On Monday night, as Tommy John’s sinker was inducing Twin after Twin to hit ground balls, Mattingly was doing no more than what a first baseman is supposed to do – trot over to the bag and catch balls thrown to him by whoever has scooped up the grounder.

WRIST INJURY SLOWS MATTINGLY
[Ross] Jones’ promotion was the fifth of an Omaha player by Kansas City since July 14. Kansas City also has recalled outfielder Lonnie Smith, catcher Mike Macfarlane, pitcher John Davis and infielder Bill Pecota. The move left Omaha Manager John Wathan in a quandary. Wathan was down to nine healthy position players in Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Louisville at Rosenblatt Stadium as infielder Ron Wotus missed the game when he aggravated a wrist injury. Wathan received news about midnight Thursday that Jones, a 27-year-old shortstop acquired from the Seattle Mariners organization in an early June deal, was headed to the major leagues. Wathan said he was uncertain what Kansas City planned to do to open a spot on the roster for Jones, hitting .315 with two home runs and 23 RBIs in 52 games for Omaha.

Buck Rodgers: At the helm of a winner
Still, it’s no wonder [Buck Rodgers] is being touted for the honor. At spring training, the Expos looked like a team in total disarray. They had pitchers on the roster whose careers were only a memory, whose best fastballs were better measured with an hourglass than a radar gun. Yet ask Rodgers the reason why the Expos have managed to remain in the hunt for the NL East pennant and you’ll get a quick reply. “The pitching.” [Herman Winningham] and Law aren’t the only Expos enjoying fine seasons. Tim Wallach is having his best year. Andres Galarraga is enjoying a great sophomore season that has seen him in the top five in batting since the start of the season. [Tim Raines] is a contender for the batting crown again. Hubie Brooks is flirting with .300 despite a wrist injury that sidelined him for more than a month. The Expos are busy being, as the advertisment says, the best that they can be and that pleases Rodgers more than anything else.
