Browner doesn’t report; Lee suffers wrist injury

The Vikings’ defensive secondary was without three of four starters Monday after strong safety Joey Browner did not report for the start of training camp and cornerback Carl Lee suffered a dislocated wrist that required surgery. Browner was unavailable for comment and Vikings general manager Mike Lynn declined to discuss Browner’s situation other than to say he will be fined because his absence was unexcused. Browner, [Chris Martin] and middle linebacker Walker Lee Ashley, also absent yesterday, will be fined $1,000 a day until they report. Ashley’s absence also is believed to be contract related.

    Hrbek’s hot streak continues

While in Florida this week, Twins president Jerry Bell and [Andy MacPhail] checked possible spring training sites in Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and a site nine miles from Orlando on Interstate Hwy. 4. Bell said Melbourne is trying to persuade the Baltimore Orioles to move from Miami. Baltimore also would be interested in Orlando if the Twins move. Orlando’s second largest employer after the Disney complex is the Martin-Marietta Co., which is based in Baltimore. That’s why the Orioles always have had some interest in the Orlando area. First, though, they want to find out how John Harris, Steve Freeman and Neal Guggemos do in training camp and in the early exhibition games. Guggemos has the talent and will get a good opportunity to show what he can do. Freeman, a 13-year veteran acquired from Buffalo, was slowed in the early minicamp by a wrist injury. But the wrist hasn’t given him any trouble this week. Harris performed well last year when he was healthy. Stars sign six choices The North Stars signed six draft picks yesterday. Mitch Messier, an All-America with Michigan State, and first-round draft choice Dave Archibald of the Portland Winterhawks have the best chance of making Herb Brooks’ club this season, according to general manager Lou Nanne. Gophers pitcher Darrin Knight is 5-2 with a 2.20 ERA for Chatham in the Cape Cod League. Gophers shortstop Jay Anderson is hitting .250 for Chatham after a poor start. . . . Owatonna outfielder Keith Krenke, who was drafted in the 16th round by Milwaukee and signed with the Gophers, told Anderson he plans to attend college.

Former Expo farmhand took things sitting down

“It was pretty hard breaking into that team because they had Tim Raines, Andre Dawson and Warren Cromartie. Then they had Terry Francona, who played outfield and first,” said [Roy Johnson] in a boisterous Tigers’ dressing room after the PCL Northern Division first-half pennant winners took their third straight win off the C’s. Johnson was dropped from the Expos’ roster in 1985 and picked up by the White Sox and then Oakland in 1986. He has been plagued by ankle and wrist injuries this season.

Briefly — Pat Cash, defending champion Boris Becker (7-5, 6-4 over San Diegan Kelly Jones), Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl coasted through second-round matches in the $375,000 Player’s International at Montreal, but No. 7 Tim Mayotte lost to New Zealand’s Kelly Evernden … Paul McNamee reached the quarterfinals of the $117,000 men’s Grand Prix tournament at Saint Vincent, Italy, 0-6, 6-3, 4-3 when No. 4 seed Horst Skoff retired with a wrist injury. Last-out rally snaps Senators’ streak

In his last 41 games, [Marty Barrett] is hitting at a .315 clip (53 for 168) and has raised his average from .237 to .270. A wrist injury slowed Barrett earlier in the season, but since it has healed, he has vowed to hit .300 the rest of the way and reestablish his credentials as one of Boston’s most dependable hitters. On Tuesday night, Wade Boggs struck out three times for only the third time in his career. Previously, only Phil Niekro and Jack Morris had fanned Boggs three times, the last on Opening Day of the 1986 season. Boggs has a sore left thumb but refuses to use it as an alibi . . . Sox general manager Lou Gorman yesterday talked with the California Angels and confirmed they have now cooled on trading for Don Baylor. Gorman said the deal had been put on hold two days ago by the Angels, and he found out why Tuesday when former Sox outfielder Tony Armas was called up from California’s Edmonton farm club. “They obviously wanted somebody who they felt could play in the outfield and replace Brian Downing, who is hurt,” said Gorman. “Armas was the player they had in mind.”

Diaz homer keeps Reds just 5 behind

Expos 7, Giants 3 — Herm Winningham drove in four runs, three on a homer, to lead visiting Montreal. Winningham’s fourth homer came in the seventh and gave Montreal a 4-3 lead. He had a run-scoring double in the ninth. Candy Maldonado drove in all of San Francisco’s runs, with his 17th homer and a sacrifice fly. After Maldonado (3-for-3) singled in the ninth, the umpires granted Montreal manager Bob Rodgers’ request to confiscate Maldonado’s bat. Briefly — Giants reliever Scott Garrelts will be out about two weeks with a fractured middle finger on his right hand … Mike Marshall (disabled with shin and wrist injuries) and Phil Garner scuffled in the dugout runway at Dodger Stadium yesterday. Garner admitted instigating the brawl, saying, “Sometimes when years are frustrating, tempers flare. Mine flared.” Garner was angered when Marshall sat in the dugout during a workout … Reds batting coach Billy DeMars, miffed that first-base coach Tony Perez was asked to help instruct hitters by General Manager Bill Bergesch, will quit after the season.

North Stars to look at prospects today

[Herb Brooks] said he expects to keep 25 to 30 of the players for the first few weeks of training camp. Many will be reassigned to the Stars’ new Kalamazoo farm team or other minor league teams in the American, International or Atlantic Coast leagues or Canadian junior teams. [Glen Sonmor] said he expects a handful of the players to challenge for spots on the NHL roster. Included are Babe, Messier, [Mike Berger] and 6-6 defenseman Dean Kolstad from Prince Albert in the Canadian Western Hockey League. Among those who will be on hand and ready today are: left wing Warren Babe, the Stars’ first pick a year ago who will tried at center at the request of his junior team; former Boston College center Ken Hodge, who is forgoing his final year of collegiate eligibility; former Gophers Pat Micheletti, who spent last season in Springfield, and Gary Shopek, a free agent; former Michigan State wing Mitch Messier; wing Jim Archibald, whose career has been seriously sidetracked by elbow and wrist injuries, and forward Stephane Roy, a 1985 draft choice who has been impressive in two Stars camps but who has not played up to expectations with his Granby, Quebec, junior team.

Tired Twins seek fresh start tonight

[Kirby Puckett]‘s arm gets tired, his legs sometimes ache. Gary Gaetti’s feet are sore. Tom Brunansky spent two weeks fighting off a wrist injury. Greg Gagne ices his shoulder after every game and once a day Hrbek can be found face down on the training table. Dan Gladden’s hamstring still is tight, but he volunteered to catch when [Sal Butera] went down. [Tom Kelly] has been particularly adept at seeing the otherwise hidden elements of mental strain. He kept Gaetti, Puckett and Hrbek out of the starting lineup Wednesday and sat Brunansky Sunday. First baseman Kent Hrbek has missed four of five games with a severe abdominal strain, and his backup, rookie Gene Larkin, is hobbled with a pulled groin muscle. Butera could miss a week with a dislocated finger while Steve Lombardozzi and Hrbek have been fighting illnesses. Of the group, Hrbek is clearly the most important – and the least healthy.

The Working Environment of the Working Poor: An Analysis Based on Workers’ Compensation Claims, Census Data and Known Risk Factors

Analysis of 1980 U.S. Census data reveals that a sizeable percentage of adult females employed full-time (working more than 2080 hours in 1979) worked in female-dominated service, sales and factory occupations and had family incomes which placed them in poverty or impoverishment status. Workers’ compensation data on women in these occupations, drawn from the 27-state Supplemental Data System, show that they filed approximately 250,000 claims for compensation in 1980. Analysis of the claims by nature of injury and body part affected is consistent with the published medical literature. Injury to the back is the leading complaint filed and large numbers of hand and wrist injuries are also reported. Compensation data, however, are usually reflective of acute conditions, especially traumatic injury, not of chronic illnesses and injuries. Additional data are therefore drawn from the medical and scientific literature. This review shows the presence of cancer-causing agents, infectious agents, reproductive toxins, safety hazards and social stressors in these occupations. Recommendations for future programs and needs are presented. For a complete reprint of this article contact Haworth Press by telephone (1-800-HAWORTH) OR EMail (getinfo@haworthpressinc.com). Cards rip Giants, 6-0, for title | Oquendo’s HR, Cox’s 8-hitter do it

Somehow, it did. [Jose Oquendo]‘s stunning blow turned a 1-0 Cardinals lead to a 4-0 advantage, and winning pitcher Danny Cox strangled the Giants on six hits through the final seven innings. What cannot be said is that St. Louis does not deserve to be in the World Series. With [Clark], his 35 home runs and 106 RBI on the bench; with Cox out nearly a week due to a stiff neck; with [Willie McGee] nursing a wrist injury, Terry Pendleton hobbling around on a bad ankle, Jim Lindeman fighting back spasms, Greg Mathews clutching his right quadriceps — no, it cannot be said that the Cardinals shouldn’t be there. [Atlee Hammaker] struck out Lindeman to begin the fateful second inning, then permitted a single to Pendleton and a single to Tony Pena that advanced Pendleton to third. McGee’s first-pitch single to left scored the game’s first run and brought up Oquendo — with pitcher Cox on deck. Craig did not consider walking the No. 8 hitter.

Managers take a second look at ergonomics

The new-found respect for ergonomics hasn’t all come willingly, however. Many companies are rethinking their workplaces in response to prodding from the much-hated Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which in February added ergonomics to the list of issues its inspectors should look for in U.S. workplaces. OSHA’s inspectors are looking for patterns of injuries, said Alvah Conley, safety engineer in charge of ergonomic issues at OSHA’s Chicago office. Ford Motor Co. turned to ergonomics to solve wrist-injury problems at its Plymouth, Mich., heating and air-conditioning factory, said Charles Micallef, a member of the plant’s ergonomics committee.

North Stars hit rock bottom with loss

North Stars notes/ The Stars played without center Keith Acton, who missed practice Tuesday because of the flu. Steve Payne also did not play because his infant daughter was ill. Defenseman Ron Wilson watched from the press box as veteran Pat Price played his second straight game. . . . Right wing Dirk Graham returned to action last night after missing seven games because of a wrist injury, and Bob Brooke played at right wing for the first time since being moved to defense early in the season. . . . Yesterday, the Stars returned wing Warren Babe to his junior team in Kamloops, British Columbia. Babe had one assist in six games for the Stars, but had not played since he was slashed by Montreal goalie Patrick Roy and suffered a bruised knee in the Oct. 19 game. Babe now can be recalled this season only if there is an emergency situation. # Then, just when you figured the Stars might have a chance to gain a point, maybe even two, they threw everything away when Tony McKegney won a tussle with [Scott Bjugstad] and Brian Lawton for the puck along the right boards. McKegney charged toward the net and dropped the puck to [Rick Meagher], who was cruising behind him. Goalie Don Beaupre didn’t have a chance.

Tinley Park 74, Stagg 60: Guard Chris Dillard did not start because of a wrist injury, but it hardly mattered, as No. 15 Tinley Park went to 6-0. Jerome Carson, a 6-5 senior, picked up the slack with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Sandburg 81, Oak Forest 54: Todd Allen scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the first half to lead Sandburg (5-0). Allen scored 11 points in the first quarter, as Sandburg took a 27-7 lead to start the blowout. Oak Forest is 0-6.

    McMahon doubtful for Sunday

The Bears also learned center Jay Hilgenberg might require shoulder surgery and be lost for the season. Houston Oilers Cornerback Patrick Allen was fined $5,000 for hitting Indianapolis kicker Dean Biasucci with a forearm to the neck in a game three weeks ago, Allen said. “I did it and I accept the consequences, which is five big ones,” he said. Cleveland Browns Los Angeles Raiders tight end Trey Junkin, the brother of Mike Junkin, the Browns’ No. 1 choice in the 1987 draft, said a wrist injury that required surgery might end Mike Junkin’s career, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Mike Junkin injured his left wrist Nov. 1 at San Diego.

Wrist injury takes sting out of Richer’s shot

Well, in the case of Canadiens Stephane Richer, it only hurts when he shoots. Richer had his wrist wrapped in ice following yesterday’s practice at the Verdun Auditorium. He jammed the wrist Saturday night against the Buffalo Sabres when Ed Hospodar banged him into the boards and then pretended he was a trampoline. Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Sabres snapped the Canadiens’ unbeaten streak at home at 14 games and was only their fourth loss in their last 26 games. Even so, the Canadiens have several teams breathing down their necks as far as the overall lead in the NHL is concerned. The Canadiens are first with 48 points but the Calgary Flames are only four points back and the Bruins five back.

Early Hull goals leave Draveurs coach frustrated

Trois-Rivieres lost captain Francis Breault in the first period because of a wrist injury. Breault returned to the Draveurs recently after playing out a 25-game contract with Maine of the American Hockey League. The Olympiques led 1-0 at the end of the first period on [Herbie Hohenberger]‘s goal. Then [Marc Saumier] and Benoit Brunet gave [Hull] a 3-0 lead in the second period. Marco Pietroniro and Terry MacLean struck in a 2:19 span later in the frame to put the Draveurs back in the game. [John Paris] had praise for 20-year-old Marc Saumier’s rugged kid brother [Raymond Saumiers] (22-39-61), 18, of the Draveurs.

    Favored Kennedy expects a challenge

BOLSA GRANDE (7-3) Coach: [Ron Inman], first year 1986-87 Finish: first, 9-1 (16-7 overall) Top Returnees: Joe Small (6-2, Sr., G). Top Newcomers: Harry Torikian (6-5, Sr., C); Mark Pincombe (6-2, Sr. F); Connie Epperson (6-0, Sr., G); Tim Ingalls (6-1, Sr., F); Jimmy Usey (5-10, Sr., G); Damon Fisher (5-10, Sr., G). Outlook: The defending league champions should be one of the top three teams in the league. Depth was to be a Matadors’ strength, but with two starters ineligible and a wrist injury to point guard Fisher (he has yet to played), the Matadors lineup has been depleted. Fisher figures to be ready to play Wednesday. Small, who is averaging 23 points per game, missed two games and played 40 seconds in another because of an ankle injury. RANCHO ALAMITOS (1-6) Coach: Terry Munson, second year 1986-87 Finish: fourth, 5-5 (12-11 overall) Top Returnees: Sean Cheatham (5-11, Sr., F); Brian Moore (6-5, Sr., C). Top Newcomers: Mike Willey (6-0, Sr., F); Kevin Webster (6-0, Sr., F); Gary Lira (5-6, Jr., G); Eddie Rivera (5-4, Sr., G); Tim Pavelec (6-1, Jr., F). Outlook: The Vaqueros, who missed the playoffs by one game last season, must find replacements for Randy Morales and Craig Paquette. Morales was second in the county in scoring last season (24.7 points per game) and Paquette was eighth (22.0). Munson said his team has struggled so far, but played hard. . The newcomers will have to develop quickly if the Vaqueros expect to contend for a first-division finish. Moore, who is averaging six points per game, is the only starter taller than 6-0. SANTIAGO (1-6) Coach: Paul Anderson, first year 1986-87 Finish: sixth, 0-10 (3-18 overall) Top Returnees: Ben Velazquez (6-1, Sr., G). Top Newcomers: Richard Takaoka (5-10, Sr., G), Leroy Fellows (5-9, Sr., G). Outlook: Anderson, the team’s third coach in three seasons, and the Cavaliers face a rebuilding season. The six losses have been by an average of 20 points. During the first month of the season, Anderson relied on Fellows. Fellows, who has a season-high of 31 points, is averaging 17 points per game.
