Recruiters Take Heed of Greer’s Career
Sidelined much of the time because of a broken right wrist, [Damon Greer] watched and waited. While the stock of others on the Cleveland team rose, it didn’t look as rosy for Greer. Wrist injuries often take months to heal, and the clock was running on Greer’s career. It turns out the injury has not decreased Greer’s salability a bit. At the Chaminade tournament last month, Michigan State Coach Jud Heathcote showed up to watch Greer wheel and deal during Cleveland’s third-round win over St. Patrick. A Greer year: Greer might not attract as much attention as some other guards because [Bob Braswell] substitutes liberally. Cleveland has several players capable of starting and, as a result, the statistics of many aren’t particularly eye-popping.

SPECIAL REPORT / PERSONAL COMPUTERS/ Time, Money Saver / PCs Revolutionized Business
Consultants have measured productivity gains of 55 percent or higher on certain tasks performed by workers using PCs. The accounting firm of Peat Marwick Main & Co. found that productivity and creativity increased 18 percent, 26 percent and 32 percent among three groups studied. Even if productivity increases only a little, corporate investment in personal computers can make sense. Several surveys and studies of people who use PCs and video display terminals (VDTs) indicate a connection between computer use and increased rates of eye strain, back and neck pain, wrist injury, stress and angina or chest pain. Computer manufacturers, armed with their own scientific information, defend their machines. They say PCs and terminals are no more harmful than the pencils and typewriters they replace.

Gee-Gees victors in hockey war
[Graydon Almstedt] will miss today’s game because of an automatic one-game suspension after he was ejected along with former 67′s defenceman Bill Dowd of [Brock] for fighting at the end of the first period. Ottawa took 18 of 33 minors and 51 of 96 penalty minutes called in the contest. Luc Frechette, Yves Plourde and Simon Massie gave Ottawa a 3-0 first period lead. Then Moe Gould, Steve Simoni and Plourde struck in a 30-second span to put the Gee-Gees ahead 6-1 after two periods. Kent Trolley and Massie completed U of O’s scoring in the third period. Mark Quinn, Darren Banks and Dave Bell replied for the Badgers, who were without top scorer Paul Ritchie because of a wrist injury. Almstedt was the Central Junior Hockey League’s top draft pick overall in 1983 by the Brockville Braves. An Ottawa West Golden Knights midget, he preferred to stay close to home and was traded to Gloucester.

Moses Malone Out 5-7 Days;All-Star’s Wrist Injury Puts Bol at Center of Attention
The latest diagnosis came yesterday afternoon after the Bullets originally announced that [Moses Malone]‘s injury was a sprain that would put his availability on a day-to-day basis. Later in the day, Coach Wes Unseld talked to team physician Steve Haas who told the coach Malone’s injury was more serious than originally thought. Malone’s injury put a damper on what was, for the most part, an enjoyable weekend. Their status as all-star teammates did little to quell the verbal gamesmanship of Malone and Philadelphia’s Charles Barkley. After the East team practice last Saturday, the two engaged in some good-natured ribbing, initiated by the Bullets’ center. That isn’t going to happen, especially now that Unseld, for so many years a part of the Bullets organization, is the current job holder. Unseld won’t be fired but he may throw his hands up in the air and walk away in disgust if the team is unable to overcome the foibles that have led to its current three-game losing streak.

Armstrong Expected Back For Iowa Game With OSU
Guard B.J. Armstrong’s wrist injury isn’t serious and he should be able to play in Wednesday night’s game with Ohio State, Iowa basketball coach Tom Davis said Monday. Davis said forward Al Lorenzen will miss his third straight game because of back spasms that flared up last week. Lorenzen was scheduled for more tests Monday. Lorenzen’s absence has forced Davis to go to a quicker, smaller lineup, with 6-3 Jeff Moe at off guard and the 6-7 [Bill] Jones moving from guard to power forward. Iowa’s other front-line players are 6-6 Roy Marble and 6-8 Ed Horton.

Mavs Still Confident Despite Bad Breaks
UNO takes a five-game losing string and only one of its top three scorers into this weekend’s home games against two of the top basketball teams in the North Central Conference. The Mavs, 10-11 overall and 3-8 in the NCC, play at 8:05 tonight in the UNO Field House against 18-3 St. Cloud State, the No. 8 team in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. UNO plays host to 15-5 Mankato State at 8:05 p.m. Saturday. The Mavs’ No. 2 scorer, Tom Thompson, suffered a hyperextended left knee Wednesday in his second practice since missing seven games with a wrist injury. He probably won’t play this weekend, UNO trainer Mark Kwikkel said. And the team’s No. 3 scorer, Kevin Avery, quit the team this week.

[Reggie] Perkins, the Huskies’ point guard and All-America candidate, scored 12 of his 21 points down the stretch to shoot down the University of Nebraska at Omaha 79-74 before an estimated 1,000 at the UNO Field House. “”I was really pumped,” said the 6-foot-1 Perkins, who also grabbed 11 rebounds and passed for nine assists. “”I just took it upon myself that I was going to carry our team through.” [Tom] Thompson, out the past seven games with a wrist injury and questionable Friday because of a hyperextended knee, played only 10 minutes. But he made them count. He hit 3 of 5 shots, scored seven points and made three assists.

Bullets Rally From 30 Back To Lose by 4
Where does one begin to assess the Washington Bullets’ 114-110 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks yesterday afternoon at Capital Centre? The first-quarter ejection of the Bullets’ Moses Malone? The frustration of seeing the Bucks’ Jack Sikma hit jumper after jumper, while the home team mustered just two field goals from beyond 10 feet in the opening three quarters? A jumper by Johnson made the score 99-97 with 4:23 left. However, with the Bucks ahead, 102-99, [Sidney Moncrief] blocked a layup by [Tyrone Bogues], and that play seemed to provide the Bucks some semblance of stability. They got layups from Moncrief and Paul Pressey and three free throws to take a 109-99 lead with 1:21 to go. The Bucks start with a towering lineup of 7-foot-3 Randy Breuer at center; 7-foot Sikma and 6-9 Terry Cummings at forwards, 6-5 Pressey and 6-4 Moncrief at guard. Early on, the guard duo negated the use of Bogues, the 5-3 rookie. Yesterday, it was Sikma-who scored a team-high 27 points-who gave the Bullets fits. Sikma, the league leader in free throws, hit his first nine shots from the floor. That took away [Manute Bol]‘s inside shot blocking. And that, in turn, might have compounded a problem begun when Moses Malone, who returned to action at center after missing three games because of a wrist injury, was ejected after barely getting his feet wet.

He returned for the district tournament, which the Indians won with a 55-50 victory over No. 1 Omaha Creighton Prep. “”He’s our catalyst,” Millard South Coach Larry Ribble said. “”He’s a great ball-handler, a great penetrator and a good scorer. Sprained thumb sidelines Brooks
Hubie Brooks, plagued by assorted hand and wrist injuries for the past couple of seasons, was scratched from the Expos’ lineup last night with a sprained left thumb. David Palmer, the former Expo who’s now pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies, said yesterday he was encouraged by reports on Ron Darling and Bob Ojeda of the New York Mets, who tossed back-to-back shutouts at the Expos Tuesday and Thursday. “Bear (Expos pitching coach Larry Bearnarth) told me that Darling didn’t throw a pitch over 85 miles an hour and Ojeda wasn’t over 84 miles an hour,” said Palmer.

Rockets Finally Beat the Lakers / THE NBA
Boston, which had trailed by 11 points at the start of the fourth period, rallied to take the lead on a Jim Paxson jumper with 2:39 remaining. John Williams scored for the Bullets, then Paxson hit another jumper to put the Celtics in front, 92-91. The seldom-used [Darrell Walker], who replaced Steve Colter after he suffered a wrist injury in the first half, finished with 13 points. Boston’s Dennis Johnson missed his second consecutive game with a sore right shoulder. Paxson filled in and scored 10 points, but without having him available as a reserve, the Celtic bench totaled only 11 points. Sacramento trailed, 32-17, after one quarter, but pulled within four, 60-56, at the half and finally caught the Blazers early in the third quarter. However, Portland went on a 14-5 run in the last 5:08 of the period, with [Clyde Drexler] getting six points and Maurice Lucas scoring all of his six. That gave Portland an 86-79 lead entering the fourth quarter and the Kings never got closer than six.

Women’s tennis champion Graf enjoys simple things
[Steffi Graf] is currently relaxing and recovering from a wrist injury she suffered while fishing in Florida this month. And the adage about home being where the heart is holds true for Graf, who admitted to being homesick after 11 weeks of play in the United States. Graf owned [Gabriela Sabatini] last year and ran up a string of 10 straight wins until the two losses this year. She isn’t sure why Sabatini has had the upper hand recently. Graf fully expects to see more of the fifth-ranked Sabatini this year. But she said [Martina Navratilova] and [Chris Evert], ranked second and third respectively, are still very much in the picture.
