NAME GAME AT TCC
Jack Nicklaus, the Olden Goldie who missed the cut (146) by a stroke, was among the more notable players missing from the third round of the 88th US Open yesterday, as was Greg Norman, who withdrew because of a wrist injury suffered during Friday’s second round. The absence of Nicklaus and Norman didn’t deter the autograph hunters who milled about near the locker room. “I’m here with Donny Nehlen (West Virginia coach), John Cooper (the new Ohio State coach) and my wife, Sondra,” said [Dick MacPherson]. “I don’t think that not having those guys like Nicklaus and Norman around will hurt, because it’s easy to see why these guys here are still around. It’s exciting to think that we might get the chance to see a new star being born, but this event is bigger than any one person . . . this is the US Open.”

Martin’s ouster could be bad news for Henderson
Billy Martin’s firing was good news for just about every player on the Yankees except outfielder Rickey Henderson. Henderson and new _ or is it old? _ manager Lou Piniella feuded last season and Henderson’s term as a Yankee was probably saved when Martin was re-re-re-re-hired. With Piniella seemingly gaining more control than ever, something might happen. INJUSTICE: Though third-baseman Paul Molitor leads the AL balloting at second base, the player who should be on top _ Seattle’s Harold Reynolds _ isn’t even among the top half-dozen vote-getters. Amid what is turning into another lost season in Seattle, Reynolds’ .313 average is 24 points higher than his closest second-base competitor. TOUGH DECISION: Perennial All-Star second baseman Willie Randolph faces a pivotal decision on a wrist injury that has landed him on the disabled list. Randolph’s injury _ a substantial ligament tear _ is complicated by the fact that Randolph, 33, is in the final year of his contract.

His hero, Greg Norman, wasn’t at the Western Open in Oak Brook, Ill. But 17-year-old Jamie Hutton had a fine time anyway, including an unwanted appearance on national television. Hutton is the Monona, Wis., youth suffering from leukemia befriended by Norman at the Heritage Classic golf tournament in Hilton Head, S.C., in April. The PGA star from Australia, who said he was inspired by Hutton, won the tournament. In the last two days of the event, television cameras focused on Hutton as he followed Norman around the course and then appeared with him after his rounds. Hutton had a bone transplant June 3 from his older brother Mike, 21, and beat the predictions of doctors by making it to the Western Open on Sunday for the final round. Norman was unable to play because of a wrist injury.

Wrist injury puts jane on sidelines
Oakville tennis star Jane Yates is experiencing her toughest Canadian national championship, because this time she’s being forced to stay on the sidelines. Yates, a 17-year-old with tremendous potential, is not participating in this week’s Sun Life Nationals at the Ontario Racquet Club in Mississauga because of a nagging bout of tendonitis in her right arm and wrist. Yates left for a tour of Europe in April, with what she thought was a healthy arm. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long to realize the seriousness of the situation.

Despite Serious Wrist Injury, Vanbiesbrouck Stays Upbeat
”We don’t know how the rehabilitation will go,” said the 25-year-old [John Vanbiesbrouck], who was 27-22-7 with two shutouts last season. ”My personal feeling is that I could be back early. But my doctors and therapist have tried hard to prepare me for it taking longer. If I was on my own, without them, without the baby, I probably would have blown it out of proportion. But they’ve shown me what it takes.” ”If it had to happen to one hand, it’s good it was the left,” said Vanbiesbrouck. ”And people tell me all the time that it could have been worse. I guess that’s so, but I can’t help but think that it also might not have happened at all.” ”With many injuries, you know in three or four weeks how it’s likely to end up,” said Dr. [Susan Craig], who has helped devise a rehabilitation program for Vanbiesbrouck. ”With this one, you don’t. It’s entirely possible he may not be able to come back. But, remarkably, he’s already begun to show some nerve regeneration. I’m optimistic, but we’ll know better in two or three months.”

FERNANDO VALENZUELA | This one is at home on a horse and has no fastball whatsoever
“I’m a fan of his; I’d like to meet him sometime,” [Fernando Valenzuela] the rider said of Fernando the pitcher. “Maybe we could get together for a picture sometime and get some promotion going.” The Dodgers’ Fernando has been a major-leaguer for eight years, but the professional career of the racetrack’s Fernando started last November at Agua Caliente in Tijuana. Valenzuela has apprentice standing, meaning horses he rides receive a 5-pound weight allowance. In certain instances, that can be an enticement for trainers. Valenzuela will receive credit for time lost because of the wrist injury and will maintain his “bug” rider status through May.

Padres Send Reds Packing
[Tim Birtsas] failed to survive the first inning, in which the Padres scored three runs, and reliever Randy St. Claire gave up three more runs in the second. The Reds nicked winner Dennis Rasmussen for three runs in the fourth, two of them on a home run by Lloyd McClendon. But the Padres got single runs off Rob Dibble in the fourth and sixth to give Rasmussen a big enough cushion to ride out a two-run rally that Lance McCullers put down in the seventh. In any case, the Reds looked to be anything but pennant contenders in losing two out of three here, and the Padres continued to look as if they are a team on the move. The Padres have a 32-27 record since Jack McKeon replaced Larry Bowa as manager May 28. More importantly, they have a much brighter outlook on life. Padre catcher Benito Santiago sat out his second consecutive game Sunday because of a sore finger, the result of a slide into home plate Friday night. He probably will be back tonight when the Padres open a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves. . . . Third baseman Chris Brown remains day-to-day after missing his fourth game because of a wrist injury, suffered when he was hit by a pitched ball Wednesday night. . . . [Randy Ready], filling in for Brown, had three singles and a walk Sunday, scored two runs, drove in one and stole a base. . . . The Padres had their second consecutive winning month, finishing July with a 14-12 record. Tony Gwynn hit .406 for the month. . . . [Keith Moreland]‘s game-winning RBI Sunday was his eighth, topping his 1987 total with the Chicago Cubs. He has driven in the game-winner in four of the Padres’ past seven victories.

Norman Returns Just in Time for PGA Championship
Greg Norman, who has been sidelined since the U.S. Open with a wrist injury, returns to action this week at the 70th PGA National Championship, the last of the year’s Big Four events. The return of Norman, who has not competed since withdrawing June 17 from the Open, and the presence of British Open champion Seve Ballesteros, offsets the absense of Masters champion Sandy Lyle in the 150-man field that begins play Thursday at the 7,015 yard, par 71 Oak Tree Golf Club. [Tom Watson], 38, needs only this one title to join golf’s most exclusive company, the four men who have scored career sweeps of the U.S. and British Opens, the Masters and PGA. Only Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus have done it.

Entries of Mudd, McNulty add luster to International field
Jodie Mudd’s victory in the St. Jude Classic put another first-time winner in the field for the International, which opens next week at the Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock. Mark McNulty, No. 1 on the European PGA Tour’s Order of Merit, last week became the 36th foreign player to enter the tournament. SHARK HUNT: Greg Norman is still questionable for the International, according to tournament officials. Norman is playing this week in the PGA Championship after taking time off to nurse a wrist injury he suffered at the U.S. Open. If Norman plays without pain this week, he could join the field when the International starts Wednesday.

Is Norman the exception that may break Tour’s rule?
Because of the wrist injury Greg Norman suffered at the U.S. Open, which caused the Great White Shark to miss two tournaments he was scheduled to play in, Norman says he will only be able to play 14 tour events this year. Yet when Norman met with PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman on Tuesday, the subject was skirted around. Beman reportedly told Norman not to concern himself with the 15-tournament restriction. Carpal Curve: All in the Wrist?
Wrist injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), have become widespread in many industries. In the mid-1980s, some 20,000-25,000 cases of CTS were reported each year, with projected costs running between $15,000 and $20,000 for each case if the person returned to work. Redesigning the job to reduce wrist movement and change wrist position is frequently the focus for dealing with CTS, which is caused by putting too much pressure on the median nerve, which runs through the wrist. Employers are using ergonomic designs to control CTS by reducing the amount of wrist bending, the number of hand repetitions, and the force of the grasp. Injury reduction design also should consider the movements and positions of the upper arm, shoulders, and back. Analysis is essential to assessing wrist and hand injuries. Ergonomic solutions for wrist and hand injuries involve tailoring the job to the body size and physical capacities of the employee.

Three share World Series lead
Briefly — Australian Greg Norman was granted an exemption from the PGA’s 15-tournament rule because a wrist injury prevented him from playing much this summer … In Frankfurt, Gordon Brand Jr. took the $470,000 German Open lead as he and Briton Richard Boxall shot course-record-tying 9-under 62s. Brand is at 15-under 198 after three rounds, one shot better than Boxall … In Chattanooga, Tenn., a bogey-5 on the 18th hole dropped Phil Blackmar (1-under 69) into a four-way tie with Payne Stewart (67), Jim Dent (67) and Bill Britton (66) after three rounds of the $450,000 Provident Classic. All are at 11-under 199 … In Cranston, R.I., Fresno’s Joan Pitcock matched the year’s lowest LPGA score, a 9-under 63, to take a two-stroke lead in the $150,000 Ocean State Open. At 21 the youngest tour player, Pitcock is at 6-under 138.

Wilburn, Branch Sidelined; On Injured Reserve; Other Wounds Salved
The roster replacements are likely to be announced today, but General Manager Bobby Beathard was keeping hush-hush about it, because at this time of year teams around the league fight for the best remaining fringe players. Beathard did say he had four players in mind, but definitely would not be signing an extra cornerback. [Barry Wilburn]‘s substitute in the starting lineup will be Brian Davis, who is considered by coaches to be Wilburn’s equal, and the new nickel backs are Johnny Thomas and Steve Gage. Linebacker Monte Coleman’s bruised left heel, safety Todd Bowles’ sprained right index finger, tackle Joe Jacoby’s sprained left ankle, wide receiver Art Monk’s bruised right knee, wide receiver Ricky Sanders’ bruised left knee, linebacker Wilber Marshall’s sprained left knee, center Jeff Bostic’s sprained left wrist and cornerback Darrell Green’s slightly sprained right knee all are in workable shape. “I’m sure {Eagles Coach} Buddy Ryan will come up with his Ryan {defensive} system, and we’ll have to deal with it,” Williams said. More specifically, the Redskins’ offensive line must deal with it, which lends to the speculation that newly acquired tackle Jim Lachey will find his way into the starting lineup. When Bostic went down with his wrist injury, it seemed a certainty at first, especially when Bostic came running back on the field near the end of the first half with his wrist wrapped and was sent back to the sideline. At the time, the front five had Lachey at right tackle, Mark May at right guard, Raleigh McKenzie at center, R.C. Thielemann at left guard and Jacoby at left tackle, and [Joe Gibbs] said yesterday the group worked well together.

AFC;Johnson might miss next game
Good omen for the CLEVELAND BROWNS: They have beaten Sunday’s opponent, Cincinnati, three consecutive times, outscoring the Bengals 106-27. Said coach Marty Schottenheimer: “This is an important game for us because it gives us the opportunity to get back in first place in our division. Playing on the road after a Monday night game makes it a little harder, but we’ve done it before.” TE Ozzie Newsome extended his consecutive game streak for pass receptions to 130 Monday and moved into eighth place in all-time NFL career catches with 583. … LCB Dwayne Woodruff, who has missed four games with a hamstring injury, will return to the PITTSBURGH STEELERS’ lineup Sunday against Buffalo. Rod Woodson, Woodruff’s replacement, will shift to right corner to replace Delton Hall, who is questionable with groin and wrist injuries. … Even Spider Man isn’t indestructible. HOUSTON OILERS TE Jamie Williams, who recently signed an agreement with NFL Properties and Marvel Comics to market a Jamie Williams/Spiderman T-shirt, might see his string of 63 consecutive starts end Sunday. He has a sprained ankle. Chris Verhulst would replace him. The penalties keep piling up for the Oilers, but coach Jerry Glanville doesn’t want his team to be any less aggressive: “The only thing that upsets me is if we hit somebody after the play is over.

Everett’s Five TD Passes Lift Rams Over Mistake-Prone Giants / THE NFC
Jim Everett threw a career-best five touchdown passes and the Los Angeles Rams turned three New York miscues into easy scores, defeating the Giants, 45-31, in East Rutherford, N.J., yesterday to remain the only unbeaten team in the NFC. The game wasn’t secured by the Cowboys until the last play, when backup quarterback Steve Dils, facing fourth-and-one on the Dallas 10, was sacked by Jim Jeffcoat and Michael Downs. Bill Bates recovered Dils’ fumble after the double hit. Minnesota quarterback Tommy Kramer, whose clutch passing set up the winning kick, appeared to have left the game at the end of the first half with a left wrist injury. However, Minnesota Coach Jerry Burns actually took him out because “we weren’t moving the football,” Kramer said.
