PRO FOOTBALL Eagles Get Boot From Vikings
When punter John Teltschik was shaken up momentarily, [Randall Cunningham] boomed a 54-yard punt out of his own end zone. Later, with the Eagles facing a second and 18 deep in their own territory, Cunningham lined up in the shotgun formation and got off a 58-yard quick kick. Viking quarterback Tommy Kramer, whose passing set up the winning kick, left the game at the end of the first half with a left wrist injury and because Coach Jerry Burns felt Kramer wasn’t moving the offense. Kramer led the Vikings on a drive that ended with Nelson’s 27-yard field goal. After the Eagles went ahead, 21-20, Kramer completed a 10-yard pass to Allen Rice on fourth and 6 and hit passes of 27 and 13 yards to Anthony Carter to set up the winning kick.

WRIST INJURY SIDELINES HORNET GUARD
- The Milwaukee Bucks have signed free-agent guard Jay Humphries to a four-year contract. The Bucks also have signed top draft pick Jeff Grayer to a three-year contract and reached a four-year deal with center Randy Breuer. The Bucks also signed four free agents to one-year contracts-Fred Cofield, Jim Les, Carlton Owens and Bill Braksick. . . . Forward Larry Krystkowiak was so anxious to get the cast off his foot that he did the quickest thing he could. He took it off himself. “I had a long drive of about 1,600 miles from Montana, and I didn’t want to deal with it the whole trip,” said Krystkowiak, who underwent minor surgery last month to have a small bone removed from the foot. The cast wasn’t supposed to come off until next week.

2 BU PLAYERS ARE SUSPENDED STRAUGHTER, ERHARD OUT FOR THE SEASON
[Brian Straughter] is a wide receiver from Stoughton. [Dan Erhard] is a quarterback from Pittsburgh, and his suspension leaves BU with two quarterbacks — including Jim Schuman, who suffered a wrist injury against Maine — for their game in London Sunday against Richmond. The other QB is freshman Walter Norton of Brookline. Straughter and Erhard, said [Chris Palmer], came to see him at 5 yesterday morning prior to the team’s 5:30 practice at Nickerson Field. “They apologized and they realized that I had to take the action,” he said. “It wasn’t my rule. It was a team rule, and I just carried out the punishment.”

Chargers Dust Out Corners Patterson Sent to the Bench; Seale to Start
Inside linebacker Chuck Faucette, the Chargers’ leading tackler, was declared out for the season Wednesday because of a cracked vertebrae in his neck. Faucette’s injury is not considered career-threatening. He was credited with 62 tackles, 5 more than free safety Vencie Glenn. Faucette’s expected replacement in the lineup is Jeff Jackson. After Faucette is placed on injured reserve, inside linebacker Cedric Figaro or defensive end George Hinkle will replace him on the roster. Figaro (back) and Hinkle (foot) are on injured reserve. . . . Running back Curtis Adams also will go on injured reserve, the result of a knee injury that will keep him out indefinitely. Barry Redden, who has been on injured reserve all season with a wrist injury, will be activated. . . . Coach [Al Saunders] said defensive end Leslie O’Neal definitely would not play in Seattle Sunday because of the danger of further injury on artificial turf. O’Neal has played in the past 2 games after being out since Nov. 30, 1986, with a knee injury. Said Saunders: “Leslie’s knee is a little swollen and a little painful. It’s nothing we didn’t expect. After 23 months of not playing, we have to be realistic. He won’t play at Cincinnati (Dec. 4), either. It’s not playing on the turf that’s dangerous; it’s the residual effect.” . . . Reserve guard James FitzPatrick missed Wednesday’s workout because of an ear infection, but is expected back today. . . . Lionel James, who was replaced by Darren Flutie as the Chargers’ punt-returner late in the Indianapolis game last Sunday, blamed himself for the demotion. He said, “I’ve been trying too hard to make big plays instead of just getting the job done. There’s a fine line between hero and goat, and bad things can happen when you struggle to make extra yardage. I would have made the decision, too.”

Kings Find the Range at Home, 7-2 Weary Whalers No Match as L.A. Picks Up 10th Victory
In the end, the Kings’ Glenn Healy faced only 30 shots to the 42 faced by Whaler goalie Mike Liut, as the Kings’ record rose to 10-6 and the Whalers’ dropped to 6-9-1. [Bernie Nicholls], Rob Carpenter and [Steve Duchesne] scored for the Kings in the second period. Then [Luc Robitaille] took over in the third period, scoring his 2 goals, the first on a pass from [Wayne Gretzky] and the second on a rebound of a shot by Dave Taylor. Saturday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins is a sellout. It is the Kings’ fourth sellout of the season and the first advance sellout. Pittsburgh’s [Mario Lemieux], the league’s leading scorer, had been out with a wrist injury, but he played Thursday night in the Penguins’ 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs and is expected to play Saturday night. . . . King defenseman Tom Laidlaw, who missed the recent trip because of a pulled hamstring, played Thursday night. . . . Wayne Gretzky picked up his first penalty minutes of the season Thursday night, 2 minutes for slashing at 14:25 of the first period. Gretzky’s scoring streak of 16 straight games is the fifth-longest in Kings history. . . . The Kings’ consecutive-games scoring streak went to 187.

Edina, loaded Lake Blue are tops
Among the good players on this season’s team are goalie Bertram, the MVP in last year’s state tournament. He had a goals-against average of 2.5 last season. [Noel] Rahn, a speedy senior center, has started for two years. Junior wing [Tom] Nevers was leading the Hornets in scoring with 10 goals and 14 assists in 14 games before suffering a season-ending wrist injury. 2. Hill-Murray (22-6) – The Pioneers have 10 players back – one goalie, three defensemen and six forwards – from the team that lost 5-3 to Edina in last season’s state final. “We should have three lines we can put on the ice that will skate with anybody,” coach Jeff Whisler said. “And we will have some good overall size.” Returning forwards Greg Hagen (6-0, 185) and Craig Johnson (6-1, 175) were among the team’s top scorers last season. Seniors Pat Schafhauser (6-1, 195) and Joe Schwartz (6-1, 200) are the top defensemen. Senior goalie Joe Grundfeldt played in four varsity games last season. Help also should come from a junior varsity that was 16-4 last season. 4. Wayzata (16-7-1) – The Trojans have 17 players with varsity experience. “We’ll have more depth, particularly at defense and goalie, than we have ever had before,” coach Steve Root said. Among the returnees are four of the top six scorers from last season: senior wing Brad Podiak (6-1, 185), junior center Brett Lievers (6-0, 170), senior center Dave Pilarski (5-10, 165) and junior defenseman Mike Muller (6-2, 205). Podiak had 14 goals, 17 assists as a junior and made all-conference. Newcomers include senior wing Dave Hansen (5-10, 165) and senior defenseman Todd Smasal (6-1, 185), who played for Eden Prairie as juniors. Hansen had 13 regular-season goals.

Fregosi airs his opinions on the Sox Says the team must reach beyond its farm system
From his home in Sarasota, Fla., [Jim Fregosi] said, “Maybe Jim Fregosi is not willing to accept losing. My wife (Joni) and I spent a lot of time saying, `Where did we go wrong? What happened?’ But I can now honestly say, I did it my way. WHO’S ON SECOND? Unlikely to land [Scott Fletcher] for second base, the Sox have strong interest in another free agent, former Yankee Willie Randolph. The 34-year-old veteran became expendable this week when the Yanks signed the Dodgers’ Steve Sax. Having been granted free agency by an arbitrator in the second collusion case, Randolph would not cost the Sox a draft choice. Hampered by rib and wrist injuries last season, Randolph played in 110 games, hitting a career-low .230 with 34 RBI. Still, the Sox see him as an improvement over Donnie Hill and Fred Manrique. New manager Jeff Torborg, a Yankee coach the last 10 seasons, has recommended him to [Larry Himes].

A stylish homecoming for Reid/Former Rocket returns to an ovation, but fouls critical
[Robert Reid] pumped in 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds and made two steals, and had he not picked up his sixth foul with 5:28 remaining in the game, Reid might have been able to prevent his Charlotte Hornets from falling to the Rockets 108-104. Houston traded Reid to the Hornets in the summer for Bernard Thompson, who is on the injured reserve with a wrist injury. Saturday marked the first time Reid had played in The Summit in anything but a Rockets’ uniform. Reid started his professional career in Houston in 1977. Prior to Saturday’s game, Reid was averaging 16.1 points and 5.1 rebounds for the Hornets. He is the second-leading scorer on the team. In his final 31 games with the Rockets, Reid averaged 9.8 points and 2.8 rebounds.

Workers Report More Hand, Wrist Injuries
As more and more workers report injuries from repetitive motions on the job, federal agencies are stepping up efforts to assess the prevalence of these injuries, to suggest ways to prevent them and to fine industries that do not protect workers. The injuries involve tendons that become inflamed from stresses and strains applied repeatedly to the wrists or arms. The injuries can occur simply from excessive repetition of the same movements, but are more likely if strain is involved.

[Darren Matsubara], who is averaging 13.3 points and 6.1 assists, has been playing with knee pain all season. The wrist injury was sustained near the end of last Friday’s game at Cal State Hayward when he landed awkwardly trying to break his fall after taking a charge. [Jim Kerman], however, did. He leaped up, sprinted to the scorer’s table and screamed, “Start the clock! Hey, ref, this guy’s cheating us on the clock!” “Relax, coach,” he said. “Just relax.” That left Kerman fuming. And even though Occidental won, 79-75, Kerman was still upset.

Lemieux Dominates With 8-Point Game
[Mario Lemieux] set a team record for goals in a game, tied his team record for points and raised his season point total to 104, tops in the league. His climb to the 100-point level is the third-fastest in NHL history, trailing only Wayne Gretzky’s performances in 1983-84 and 1984-85. Lemieux, who missed two games with a wrist injury, did it in his 36th game. The eight-point game matched the club record Lemieux set in a 9-2 victory over St. Louis on Oct. 15. Lemieux and Gretzky are the only players ever to record two eight-point games in the same season. PHOTO-MUG CAPTION:Mario Lemieux’s record five goals lift Penguins past Devils.

LEMIEUX ON A ROLL: FIVE GOALS, 3 ASSISTS
He scored on a penalty shot, shorthanded; on a power play, at even strength, and into an empty net while totaling eight points yesterday as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New Jersey Devils 8-6. Brilliance Routine for Mario Lemieux
After being limited to one assist in a 2-2 tie in New Jersey on Friday, [Mario Lemieux] entered Monday night’s game against the Whalers at the Hartford Civic Center leading the NHL with 92 points (36 goals, 56 assists) in 33 games. If Lemieux doesn’t miss any more games to injury, his 2.79-points-a-game pace would give him an NHL record 217 points. His goal pace is headed for 85, which would be second only to [Wayne Gretzky]‘s 92 goals in 1981-82. All those projections won’t mean a hill of beans if Lemieux rips off another 41-point barrage like he did in the first 12 games of this season before missing a few games with a wrist injury. “I want to win the scoring title, with Gretzky (82 points), Bernie Nicholls (83) and myself there’s a challenge,” Lemieux said. “I want to be the best I can. But after a while all the Lemieux vs. Gretzky (comparisons) can get a little old. I’m sure Wayne feels the same way. I really admire him. But I want to be recognized as Mario Lemieux and judged on what I can do.” The irony is that Gretzky served as a teacher in Lemieux’s maturation process. Gretzky showed Lemieux the door to immortality, but Lemieux had to be the one to open it.

[Rob Brown] plays on the same line as [Mario Lemieux] with the Pittsburgh Penguins so he might be biased, but it was hard to argue with him after Lemieux just about handled the New Jersey Devils by himself, scoring five goals and adding three assists in an 8-6 National Hockey League victory Saturday. His climb to the 100-point level is the third-fastest in NHL history, trailing only Wayne Gretzky’s performances in 1983-84 and 1984-85. Hudson all-star show goes to another New Orleans bowler Series: Bowling notes
John Cofhlin, 24, beat a field of 134 southeastern pros to win the regional at Hudson Bowl on Sunday, making it two in a row for New Orleans bowlers. Scott Monteleone won the event last year. Tampa PBA pro Tom Crites was the show’s headliner. Holder of four PBA and seven regional titles, Crites is fighting through a nagging wrist injury. Crites was the third high qualifier Sunday, behind Ocala’s Roger Bowker and Cofhlin, and he lost only three of 16 head-to-head matches. Crites finished fourth in the finals, losing to Pensacola’s Mike Christenson, then sandwiched his wrist in ice. Countryside and Southland lanes each have staged regionals and Sunrise Lanes in St. Petersburg is a regular tour stop. Southland owner Rocco Sarley is working out May dates with the regional folks. AMF Kenneth City Bowl’s (formerly Major League Lanes) manager, former pro Bill Zuben, is considering a bid.
