Southern Regional makes usual strong showing Series: bowling notes

HUDSON – The new year had hardly begun before Suncoast bowlers and fans were treated to one all-star show, the PBA Southern Regional, and prospects of another coming up this weekend, the Cream of the Crop at Leisure Lanes. John Cofhlin, 24, topped a field of 134 southeastern pros to win the regional at Hudson Bowl Jan. 1, making it two in a row for New Orleans bowlers. Scott Monteleone won it last year. Tampa PBA pro Tom Crites was the show’s headliner. Holder of four PBA and seven regional titles, Crites is fighting through a nagging wrist injury. He was the third high qualifier and lost only three of 16 head-to-head matches. Crites finished fourth in the finals, losing to Pensacola’s Mike Christenson, then sandwiched his wrist in ice.

North Stars chalk up another tie as lead slips away with 1:20 left

“We’ve got to pick up every point when we have the opportunity. We can’t say, `We’ll get this point we didn’t get tonight tomorrow night.’ We don’t have another chance to get the point that we lost tonight.” North Stars notes/ Left wing Curt Fraser missed his second straight game because of a wrist injury. Goalie Jarmo Myllys also did not suit up. . . . Stars right wing [Brian Bellows] has scored 216 regular-season goals in his career – 40 have come against the Maple Leafs. Bellows has 40 goals and 32 assists in 51 games against Toronto, including four goals and five assists this season. The Toronto Globe and Mail newspaper suggests if Bellows could play all 80 games against the Leafs, he could challenge Mario Lemieux for the NHL scoring title. . . . Toronto newspapers reported that Leafs wing Wendel Clark might play Saturday night in Montreal, although the team denies it. Clark has missed 99 games since the start of last season because of a back injury and has not played this season. . . . The Stars have outscored opponents 46-39 in the first period but have been outscored 63-52 in the second, 66-50 in the third and 1-0 in overtime. . . . The Stars are four points ahead of last season’s pace. They were 13-24-8 (34 points) after 45 games last season. They are 14-22-10 (38) this season. [Mark Osborne] tied the game with 11:51 gone in the second, after [Basil McRae] had run defenseman [Borje Salming] smack into the Stars’ net as Salming and the Leafs rushed the puck down the ice. McRae received an automatic game misconduct for his major stick-foul penalty, and Salming left the game with charleyhorses in his leg. The Leafs took seven of their 24 shots on that power play but managed only Osborne’s goal.

Armed … and dangerous // Longhorns could have one of their all-time great staffs

Gustafson’s timetable undoubtedly will move up because he is counting on five or six established pitchers before the team begins conference play March 24 at Baylor. Besides a [Kirk Dressendorfer]-like year from Dressendorfer, the emergence of [Shane Reynolds] and [Mark Smith] is crucial to the Horns’ chances of returning to Omaha, although [Chris Gaskill] and [David Klvac] have been drawing rave reviews and should figure in prominently. o Chris Gaskill: Led Houston-area pitchers with an 0.50 ERA last spring before missing the last two months with a dislocated thumb. He allowed four earned runs over the season, struck out 128 and walked just 16 in a 9-2 season. He led Texas team in strikeouts in the fall with 9.31 per nine innings. “He has such dominating pitches,” Dressendorfer said. “As he develops, he’s going to be awesome.” Gaskill can hit 90 mph, and he has an exceptional slider and sometimes an exceptional curve. No dummy either, the 6-0, 185-pound right-hander ranked 16th in a graduating class of 450 with a 3.97650 grade-point average. o David Klvac: A 6-4, 210-pound left-hander, Klvac threw for St. Pius in Houston and was all-state as a junior and senior. He has to overcome a wrist injury in which he irritated a tendon when he fell jumping rope. Klvac has a good fastball and curve ball and good command of the strike zone. He held batters to a club-low .219 batting average in the fall.

Johnsburg stars hope to write happy ending to careers

When Sean Kegel and Mike Lewis end their wrestling careers at Johnsburg, no one will be sadder than Skyhawk coach Jim Briscoe. College coaches might come in a close second. Best buddies Kegel and Lewis have been wrestling together since the 6th grade and have set a standard that has elevated wrestling to a high level at Johnsburg. Kegel took second in Class AA at 98 pounds last year. Lewis was unbeaten at 112 (36-0) before being sidelined with a wrist injury. The Skyhawks advanced to Tuesday’s Dundee-Crown team regional with a third-place finish in the Woodstock individual regional. Kegel and Lewis head a Johnsburg senior class that also includes 20-match winners Shane Sperry (130), Matt Hennegan (135), Tim Rorig (145) and Dennis Linn (189). Kegel and Lewis are the examples they have followed.

Wrist injury ends season for Curran

The Colonel, as [Brian Curran] is known, suffered a badly dislocated right wrist when he crashed into the end boards during the Leafs’ 4- 2 victory over the Minnesota North Stars Saturday night. The injury will sideline him for the balance of the season. “They had to do it right away because there was pressure on the wrist and if I didn’t have surgery last night I might have been in a bit of trouble,” explained Curran. “I’ll have it examined by (Leafs doctor) Dr. (Dave) Hastings when I get back to Toronto. It’ll be eight weeks before I get the pins out.” Blue-line banter: Defenceman Rick Lanz will have his sore shoulder, which has kept him out of 12 of the last 14 games, examined today. Even with Lanz and Brian Curran both sidelined, Leafs still have seven defencemen on tap, including rookie Daryl Shannon, who did not get to play during the road trip . . . Paul Lawless, obtained from Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, will join the team today . . . St. Louis Blues have lost six straight.

    Lemieux provides routine brilliance

[Mario Lemieux] entered tonight’s game against the Black Hawks at the Stadium leading the NHL with 92 points (66 goals, 106 assists) in 66 games. If Lemieux doesn’t miss any more games to injury, his 2.61-points-a-game pace is just short of an NHL record 217 points. His goal pace is just slightly behind [Wayne Gretzky]‘s 92 goals in 1981-82. All that won’t mean a hill of beans if Lemieux rips off another 41-point barrage like he did in the first 12 games of this season before missing a few games with a wrist injury. The irony is that Gretzky served as a teacher in Lemieux’s maturation process. Gretzky showed Lemieux the door to immortality, but Lemieux had to be the one to open it. If Gretzky showed Lemieux the way to win, The Great One also taught Le Magnifique how to open the bank vault. After Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall acquired Gretzky from Edmonton, McNall lavished an eight-year, $20-million contract on his star attraction. The Penguins had promised to renegotiate Lemieux’s $600,000-a-year salary. After the Gretzky deal, matters between the Penguins and Lemieux’s agent, Tom Reich, got sticky. If something wasn’t done in a hurry, Lemieux wasn’t going to negotiate again until his option expired in 1991. The sides finally agreed on a $1.6-million deal for Lemieux for this season and a renegotiated deal at a later date.

Ward’s top rival to miss Supercross

Sidelined with an injury at the beginning of the season, Jeff Ward has had to sit by and watch arch-rival Rick Johnson win five consecutive Camel Supercross races. As soon as Ward’s ankle healed in time for the Coors Extra Gold Super Challenge this Saturday in the Astrodome, Johnson was knocked out with a wrist injury. Ward figured to battle Johnson for the title this year. Now it seems neither of the sport’s top riders will wear the crown. Ward is out of contention with the accident that happened in Anaheim, Calif.

Ward puts win streak on line in Supercross

Team Honda comes into the event with three of its riders – Jeff Stanton, Rick Johnson and Guy Cooper – with the three top point totals in the Camel Supercross Series. Stanton, of Sherwood, Mich., comes into this event after snapping Johnson’s five-race winning streak at Daytona, Fla., last weekend. With Johnson sidelined with a wrist injury, Stanton and Cooper look to be the biggest challenges to [Jeff Ward]‘s reign.

Brunansky shows again why trade hurt Twins

Actually, [Shane Rawley] is what the Twins have to show for the [Tom Brunansky] trade. After last season, the Twins traded [Tommy Herr] to Philadelphia for the veteran lefthander. Twins farm director Jim Rantz said he is making a starter out of former Edina pitcher Rob Wassenaar, who pitched in relief for Stanford and then Quad Cities of the Midwest League last season. Wassenaar came to the Twins in the Bert Blyleven trade. . . . Former Jackson, Minn., prep star Wade Wacker, who had back problems after being drafted in the third round in 1987, is healthy and looked good at the Twins’ minor league camp in Melbourne. . . . Pitcher Willie Banks, the Twins’ No. 1 draft choice in 1987 who was 10-10 with a 3.72 ERA last year for Class A Kenosha, will pitch for Class A Visalia this season. Banks might be three years away from the majors. . . . Twins rookie catcher Derek Parks, who has batted only once this spring, will play at Class AA Orlando again this season. . . . Former Gophers center fielder J.T. Bruett, who was signed by the Twins last year, will have to take it easy in camp because of a shoulder separation suffered when he fell during the offseason. . . . Former Twins catcher Dave Engle, who was released by Montreal last season, is one of the hitting stars in Milwaukee’s camp. . . . Former Gopher Kelvin Smith, who transferred to Houston, sat out the basketball season because of a knee injury. . . . North Stars coach Pierre Page said that Dirk Graham, traded to Chicago last year for Curt Fraser, is the Blackhawks’ best player. Fraser has been sidelined this season because of a wrist injury. . . . The word is that former Redskins safety Travis Curtis is the best of the eight free agents signed by the Vikings. One reason the Twins traded Brunansky was that they didn’t want to pay his $1.5 million salary next year. But the way salaries are going up, he would have been a bargain. “If they thought money was an issue, I’m sure if Tommy Herr had worked out for them, they would have had to pay him as much as I was getting,” Brunansky said. “I don’t think money was an issue. Had they got a pitcher for me, the trade wouldn’t have received as much attention as it did.” High on Brunansky “[Bruno] gets his 80 RBI and 20-plus home runs every year and he knows how to play the game,” Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog said. “He is a great guy in the clubhouse and off the field.”

    RESULTS

Rowing Oxford Defeats Cambridge: Oxford claimed its 13th victory in the last 14 years by overcoming an early clash of oars to defeat a heavier Cambridge crew by two lengths in yesterday’s 135th edition of the annual University Boat Race, the first race in which both coxswains were women. Oxford finished the four and a half miles along the Thames River in 18 minutes 28 seconds, almost 2 minutes slower than the record of 16:45 it set in 1984. Cambridge had a time of 18:35 in calm water and clear weather. Since 1976, the Dark Blues of Oxford have lost only in 1986. The Light Blues of Cambridge still hold an overall 69-65-1 lead in the race that began in 1829. The winning coxswain was Alison Norrish of England, while a Harvard University graduate, Leigh Weiss, a former member of the United States national lightweight crew, was the coxswain for Cambridge. Oxford opened a six-second lead halfway through the race and never was seriously challenged.(AP) Golf Norman Gains Lead on Third 68 in Row: Greg Norman, fully recovered from a wrist injury that hampered him last year, shot his third straight 68 yesterday to take the lead after three rounds of the USF&G Classic in New Orleans. His 54-hole score of 12-under-par 204 put him one shot ahead of Tim Simpson, who entered the day tied for the lead with Dan Forsman and shot a 70. Forsman had a 71 and was tied with Hal Sutton at 206. Sutton shot a 67. Tom Kite, seeking a third straight tournament victory, shot a 74 and was at 213. Norman had six birdies and two bogeys. He two-putted from 10 feet on No. 5 for a bogey and two-putted from 12 feet on No. 18.

    Canseco’s Injury Not Devastating

Now, with [Jose Canseco]‘s wrist injury more serious than was thought at the time, [Felix Jose] will be starting the season in right field, not in Tacoma. In the short term, the A’s certainly will miss Canseco, the league’s MVP last season. But in the long run, they’ll benefit from the chance to play Felix. MOST OF all, [Tony La Russa] is prepared. Another team would have been devastated by having a player like Canseco unavailable, but La Russa was ready to plug Jose in there. There’s only one problem: For those following the team the last three years, Jose has automatically meant Canseco. From now on, we’ll have to ask: Canseco or Felix?

Will ’89 be the season when Jays finally soar?

It took Boston just 89 games to win the division title last year, when Toronto suffered a hangover from its tempestous spring. The Blue Jays have been brought to court by pitcher Mike Flanagan _ kangaroo court, that is _ and say their attitudes are rejuvenated. The Dodgers jammed [Jose Canseco], gave [Dave Parker] an unending series of sucker breaking balls and fed [Mark McGwire] a mixed diet of high-and-tight fastballs and low-and-away breakers. No doubt American League pitchers watching the fascinating Series on television were taking notes. It’s tough enough to repeat as division champions; now Canseco’s out from three to five weeks with a wrist injury. That might let the other serious players _ Minnesota and Kansas City _ get an early jump and nobody can tell about the new-look Texas Rangers.

Top contenders for Masters? Round up the usual suspects

Like Ballesteros and [Lyle], Norman of Australia has a game ideally suited to Augusta’s hills, wide-open fairways and hard greens. A two-time Masters runner-up, Norman insists he is fully recovered from the wrist injury that hampered him much of last season and the devastation from Larry Mize’s playoff pitch-in that beat him in the 1987 Masters. “It put me in limbo. I went into a two-year trough,” Norman said. “I didn’t get out of it until early this year. Now I’m ready to get on with it, get back to where I was, where I want to be.” “(Greg) Norman, Seve (Ballesteros), (Curtis) Strange, (Sandy) Lyle, (Mark) Calcavecchia, (Tom) Kite, (Ben) Crenshaw,” said [Jack Nicklaus], the only six-time winner of the green jacket given to Masters champions. there is nothing to indicate they should not be the major contenders this time. But, just as they failed to win in three of the last six Masters, there are no assurances in this tourney that begins Thursday. “There always seems to be drama in the Masters,” Nicklaus said. “The golf course lends itself to drama. So many things can happen on the back nine and everybody knows about 18.”

    A Renewal Is Upon Us

The issues in the A’s story are whether the team can repeat; whether Jose Canseco will damage his image by becoming a spoiled superstar for a year or two; perhaps most important, whether Canseco’s wrist injury is a minor obstacle or will develop into something that could mar the career of this wonderful athlete, just as a bad wrist has plagued Jeffrey Leonard. We must see whether there’s enough magic in Roger Craig’s bag of tricks to bring his undertalented team to the top of the National League West, whether Kevin Mitchell can play left field, whether there’s anyone formidable enough in the batting order to prevent opposing pitchers from walking Will Clark every time a man gets on base, whether Candy Maldonado is a true starter or merely a glorified substitute.
