Henderson may not give A’s the relief they need
The A’s are hoping Henderson’s presence will take some of the pressure off [Jose Canseco] to produce immediately. Canseco, who has been out for the better part of four months with a wrist injury, begins his minor-league rehabiliation assignment today. o o o Some memories never die, which might explain why Milwaukee left-hander Dan Plesac turned and looked beyond the left-field fence when he faced Cubs outfielder/first baseman Lloyd McClendon during spring training. Now that they have [Eric Plunk], the Yankees might attempt to trade former San Diego reliever Lance McCullers, who has been a disappointment this season … When the Cardinals traded for Pedro Guerrero last year, they were concerned about the number of injuries he had with the Dodgers. However, this season Guerrero is the only Cardinal to start every game. o o o Through yesterday, the injury- plagued Reds had lost nine of 13, and there was concern over whether they were being affected by baseball’s investigation into alleged gambling violations by Manager Pete Rose. Two years ago, before a night game in Los Angeles, Rose spent almost an entire afternoon autographing photos of himself so that a go-between could sell them … If Rose is suspended or banned, the Reds might replace him with Sparky Anderson or Chuck Tanner. o o o The Braves tried out a new pitching machine the other night, with results that were less than favorable. A wild pitch struck coach Bobby Wine on the hand, breaking two fingers … Last year the Braves forgave infielder Ron Gant’s 26 errors because the rookie hit 19 homers and drove in 60 runs. Switched from second to third this year, Gant had 16 errors and a .161 average when he was demoted to Class A Sumter, S.C., to try to become an outfielder …

Reagan will do color at All-Star Game
The former president will do one inning of color commentary during NBC’s telecast of the All-Star Game on July 11, the network said Monday. [Ronald Reagan] will join regular announcers Vin Scully and Tom Seaver in the broadcast booth at Anaheim Stadium. Reagan, known at the time as “Dutch,” broadcast Iowa football in 1932 for WOC radio in Davenport, Iowa. One year later he shifted to WHO, an NBC affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa, and for five seasons did recreations of Chicago Cubs games based on written descriptions provided over Western Union wires. Kansas City outfielder Bo Jackson continues to lead all AL players with 868,759 votes. Kirby Puckett of Minnesota, with 728,434, and Oakland’s Jose Canseco, with 507,139, are the other outfield leaders, although Canseco has not played a game because of a wrist injury.

Where Team Spirit Is No Game
Even those few U.S. players with Asian habits don’t seem to find it easy in Japan. Former Dodger captain Willie Davis was a practicing Buddhist who chanted his mantra all day, driving Japanese teammates crazy. “”They thought they were at a Buddhist funeral,” [Robert Whiting] says, and it threw their wa all out of whack. When Davis was sidelined with a wrist injury, the team went on a winning streak “”because their wa had been restored.” It looks like Robert Whiting has done it again. The author of the 1977 classic “”The Chrysanthemum and the Bat,” rated the best sports book of the year by Time magazine, has outdone himself. “”You Gotta Have Wa” contains a breezy and readable history of baseball in Japan. It’s packed with entertaining anecdotes about U.S. players and their tortured adjustments to the Japanese culture, and it uses the noble sport as a metaphor for Japanese-American relations in general. It’s hard to imagine a better book on the subject.

Santiago, Gwynn starry-eyed over this selection
[Benito Santiago] was the fifth-leading NL vote-getter and one of only six players to gather more than one million votes. With 1,307,358 votes, Santiago outdistanced St. Louis Cardinals catcher Tony Pena by a whopping 565,662 margin. [Tony Gwynn], who did not play in last year’s game after an injury-ridden first half, placed third among NL outfielders, edging the Cincinnati Reds’ Eric Davis 977,574 to 810,744. Gwynn has not been productive in four All-Star appearances. His only hit in eight at-bats — a single — came at Candlestick Park in 1984. In 1985, he was limited to one inning and a lone plate appearance because of a wrist injury. In 1987, Gwynn pinch hit and grounded out. Perhaps it’s about time. Gwynn has won three batting titles in five years, including the last two in a row. He has averaged 211 hits a year during that time. From 1984 through last night’s play, Gwynn has outhit [Wade Boggs] 1,174 to 1,161.

CANSECO, SCHMIDT ARE ALL-STARS IN ABSENTIA
In simpler times, a baseball player became an All-Star Game starter the old-fashioned way – by hitting, running, throwing, catching and ballot-box stuffing. [Jose] Canseco hasn’t played an inning for the Oakland Athletics this season because of a wrist injury. [Mike] Schmidt hasn’t played an inning for the Philadelphia Phillies since May 29, when he announced his retirement. But both were among the 16 names selected by a vote of the fans to start in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Anaheim Stadium. Canseco looks at the matter differently. Sure, he’s been out of the Oakland lineup since March. Sure, he has more arrests than at-bats this season.

Motor Racing Bob Nordskog Is 76-but Still Very Much in the Fast Lane
[Bob Nordskog] won overall in the first race, the Sweetheart, and won in his class in the second race, the Rum Run, but had mechanical failure in the Ventura Channel Dash in May. Nordskog built a new and faster boat, a 40-foot Fountain, for this season and raced it in the last two races. It won the nontunnel class in the Rum Run, a race around Catalina, in a heavy fog, but in the Ventura race it developed a problem in the drive train that has not been resolved to Nordskog’s satisfaction. Bob (Hurricane) Hannah, 32, a six-time American Motorcyclist Assn. national champion and winner of 63 national events, will make his final competitive appearance Sunday in the 250cc U.S. Grand Prix at Unadilla Valley in New Berlin, N.Y. Other U.S. entries include Rick Johnson, who started his comeback from a serious wrist injury by winning the Mammoth Mountain Invitational two weeks ago, Jeff Ward, Micky Dymond, Johnny O’Mara, Broc Glover and George Holland. World points leader is Jean-Michel Bayle of France, the 125cc world champion.

All-Star Voters Speak: It’s Canseco, Schmidt
[Jose Canseco] hasn’t played an inning for the Oakland Athletics this season because of a wrist injury. [Mike Schmidt] hasn’t played an inning for the Philadelphia Phillies since May 29 because of his retirement. But both were among the 16 players selected by a vote of the fans to start in Tuesday night’s All-Star game at Anaheim Stadium. In the American League, Jackson, [Kirby Puckett] and Canseco will be joined in the starting lineup by Oakland catcher Terry Steinbach, Oakland first baseman Mark McGwire, Texas second baseman Julio Franco, Boston third baseman Wade Boggs and Baltimore shortstop Cal Ripken. Canseco’s selection has proved a controversial one, even with his own manager, Tony La Russa, who is also the manager of the AL All-Star team. La Russa is reportedly not playing Canseco unless he appears in at least one game for the A’s before the All-Star break.

BOGGS NAMED AN AL STARTER
[Wade Boggs] finished 288,231 votes ahead of runner-up Carney Lansford of Oakland in the balloting. There is a certain irony in this, inasmuch as it was an injury to Lansford that opened the door for Boggs to enter the Red Sox lineup in 1982. [Jose Canseco] has missed the entire season with a wrist injury, but that didn’t deter the fans from voting him into the lineup. However, All-Star/Oakland manager Tony LaRussa says Canseco won’t be in the game unless he’s been activated prior to the All-Star Game and has played in at least one game. Boggs and Canseco were joined in the AL lineup by Oakland first baseman Mark McGwire, Texas second baseman Julio Franco, Baltimore shortstop Cal Ripken, Minnesota outfielder [Kirby Puckett], Kansas City outfielder [Bo Jackson] and Oakland catcher Terry Steinbach.

Willie Randolph and Steve Sax, second baseman who exchanged uniforms, were selected as All-Star reserves. The AL said Thursday that Jose Canseco of the Athletics will not play in the All-Star game because of a season-long wrist injury. He was voted to the starting team by the fans despite not playing this year. Canseco originally said he wanted to play but later agreed with [Tony LaRussa] that he would sit out the game. The AL starters are catcher Terry Steinbach of Oakland, first baseman Mark McGwire of Oakland, second baseman Julio Franco of Texas, shortstop Cal Ripken of Baltimore, third baseman Wade Boggs of Boston and outfielders Bo Jackson of Kansas City and Kirby Puckett of Minnesota.

INJUSTICES NOTHING NEW IN ALL-STAR VOTING — FANS STRUCK OUT AGAIN IN 1989
You elect Philadelphia third baseman Mike Schmidt to start in Tuesday’s Classic in Anaheim, six weeks after he retired with a .203 average. Only the sane ruling of NL President Bill White will keep Schmidt ceremonially on the bench rather than fossilized in the lineup. You elect Oakland outfielder Jose Canseco, though a wrist injury has kept him from taking a single major-league swing all season. Only the sane decision by the A’s kept Canseco from hurrying his return for an All-Star stage. You make bad voting decisions every year, but most, like a couple of others this year, at least are arguable. Never until Schmidt – not once since voting was returned to fans in 1970 – had you elected a retired player. Never until Canseco had you elected a player with a .000 average, 0 homers and 0 RBI.

GIAMATTI NOT ABOUT TO VOID FANS’ VOTES
Stubbornly voting for Mike Schmidt and Jose Canseco, one in retirement and the other on rehab from a season-long wrist injury, it’s a good thing the fans didn’t want to see Jimmy Hoffa start at shortstop for the National League. Schmidt had the graciousness to limit his appearance to a bow. Canseco, who bleats that the press exaggerates his off-field soap opera existence, tried to be true to his ego. With initial approval from Oakland Manager Tony La Russa, Canseco said he would make his 1989 debut at the All-Star Game. Mike Littwin of the Baltimore Sun pointed out that two good seasons usually are enough to make a baseball hero, so it was surprising the fans didn’t vote for actor Kevin Costner after he made back-to-back hits in “Bull Durham” and “Field of Dreams.”

Canseco doubtful about return from wrist injury
Jose Canseco sounded a pessimistic note about his return to the Oakland Athletics’ lineup after going hitless in a game the Huntsville Stars won Saturday night, 7-4, over the Memphis Chicks. Canseco, last year’s American League MVP, is still bothered by soreness in his left wrist, but will return to Oakland today.

The California Angels, Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos – baseball’s division leaders at the All-Star break – have history on their side. In Anaheim, Oakland outfielder Jose Canseco, who missed the first half of the season with a wrist injury, will join the American League team for All-Star workouts today. He will take batting practice today and Tuesday but will not play in the game, Athletics manager Tony La Russa says.

Fans call the shots for All-Star Game
At All-Star time, you can for one day forget about Wade vs. Margo, ignore Pete Rose’s betting habits and not worry about Dallas Green’s hold on the New York Yankees managerial buttons. * In the American League, Jose Canseco, who has yet to play in a major league game this season because of a wrist injury, was elected a starting outfielder. He placed third, behind Bo Jackson and Kirby Puckett, and ahead of the Boston Red Sox’s Mike Greenwell, who was added to the squad as a reserve. Canseco said he was told Thursday by Athletics’ manager Tony La Russa that he would not play. Canseco initially said he planned to play, but Oakland management said he would have to come off the disabled list first. [Mike Schmidt] will make a pre-game appearance, but will not play.

THERE’S TROUBLE AT THE TOP ORIOLES MANAGER ROBINSON UPSET WITH TREATMENT BY UMPIRES
[Tony LaRussa] says there’s only a 50-50 chance that [Jose Canseco], who is still recovering from a wrist injury, will be back by this weekend. Canseco skipped yesterday’s workout and may not appear tonight, either . . . Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski failed to appear at a morning news conference. Gary Carter of the Mets did, and accepted the Roberto Clemente Award for outstanding community service. Kansas City’s [Bo Jackson] and Will Clark of San Francisco were honored as the top vote-getters in their respective leagues . . . Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda lamented the fact that several fine players were left off the roster, a decision that in some cases cost the player thousands of dollars. “I’m thinking about writing a letter to some of those deserving players who didn’t make it,” said Lasorda . . . Dave Stewart (13-4) said his starting assignment tonight helps make up for losing the Cy Young Award balloting the last two years to Roger Clemens of Boston and Frank Viola of Minnesota. “I can say now that in both cases, the awards they got were deserving,” said Stewart. “Starting here is a reward for the hard work I’ve done. Sure, the recognition is nice. But I put up numbers to earn it.” According to one source, [Frank Robinson] became upset after a weekend series in Milwaukee during which he believed he was not treated properly by the umpiring crew, which included John Shulock, Ken Kaiser, Larry Young and Jim McKean. Robinson claimed the umps treated him coldly, walked away during arguments and are generally less tolerant with him than other managers.

Canseco cited again for speeding
[Jose Canseco], who has not played this season because of a wrist injury, was cited for speeding in the same area earlier this year. In February, he was ticketed in Florida for driving 125 mph in his $75,000 red Jaguar. In March, he was ticketed for speeding in the same car in Arizona. Guidry retires — Former Cy Young Award winner Ron Guidry, 38, the final link to the Yankees’ powerhouse 1977-78 world championship teams, announced his retirement in New York. Umpire sues — Attorneys for former major-league umpire Satch Davidson filed suit against the New York Daily News and reporter Dave Kaplan, seeking more than $5 million in damages for a story alleging Davidson conspired to fix major-league games. The suit denied that Davidson had ever gambled, fixed games or had been involved in or part of any gambling by umpires.

Second Half Won’t Be Easy for A’s, Giants / Return of Canseco, Eck Doesn’t Assure Repeat
[Dennis Eckersley]‘s return will be welcome. Of the 10 A’s players who’ve gone on the disabled list this season, he undoubtedly was missed most. The A’s 0-8 record in extra innings is only one symptom of Eckersley’s absence. It went beyond not having his right arm – what also hurt was the role-shifting that followed his departure. With Eckersley back to finish games, [Todd Burns] and Rick Honeycutt will go back to being setup men, although they did an excellent job in Eckersley’s absence. With Gene Nelson and one of the Youngs in the middle, the A’s bullpen should return to its 1988 status as the game’s best. The A’s are aware that wrist injuries, such as [Jose Canseco]‘s, can be tricky for a power hitter. Jeffrey Leonard took two years to get over his. So even when Canseco gets himself into playing shape, it would be unrealistic to expect the type of production he delivered last season. Nevertheless, the A’s have only one home run from a right fielder in 86 games. A one-handed Canseco can do better than that.

Canseco Returns With Bang
Jose Canseco hit a home run in his 1989 debut last night, highlighting the Oakland Athletics’ 11-7 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the SkyDome. Mark McGwire and Dave Parker each stroked a three-run homer for the A’s. Canseco, last season’s AL MVP, missed the first 86 games with a wrist injury. Recently Canseco had been playing for AA Huntsville (Ala.) in the Southern League. The A’s used left fielder George Bell’s error to score four unearned runs in the fifth for a 9-4 bulge. Canseco hit his sacrifice fly and Parker chased [Jimmy Key] with his 13th homer.

After missing first 86 games because of a wrist injury,
[Jose Canseco] turned Toronto’s gleaming, new ballpark into his personal stage last night, hitting a home run and a single, driving in three runs and stealing a base. Everything Canseco did on his return to the lineup was significant for the A’s, who held off the Blue Jays, 11-7, in the teams’ first game following the All-Star break. Canseco, who had missed the A’s first 88 games of the season because of a wrist injury, even managed to overshadow the equally anticipated return of reliever Dennis Eckersley, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his first appearance since May 27. Canseco’s third RBI of the game, coming on a ninth-inning single, increased the A’s lead to four runs and deprived Eckersley of a chance for a save. [Tony La Russa] was uncertain if Canseco would play tonight against Toronto right-hander Dave Stieb. “”I don’t know how sore he is going to be,” said La Russa, grateful to talk about something besides Canseco’s scrapes with the law. “”I suspect he is going to be pretty stiff tomorrow.”
