Canseco Sparks A’s; Giants Win / Jose Has Homer, 3 RBIs As Oakland Tops Jays, 11-7

[Jose Canseco] turned Toronto’s gleaming, new ballpark into his personal stage last night, hitting a home run and a single, driving in three runs and stealing a base. Everything Canseco did on his return to the lineup was significant for the A’s, who held off the Blue Jays, 11-7, in the teams’ first game following the All-Star break. Canseco, who had missed the A’s first 88 games of the season because of a wrist injury, even managed to overshadow the equally anticipated return of reliever Dennis Eckersley, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his first appearance since May 27. Canseco’s third RBI of the game, coming on a ninth-inning single, increased the A’s lead to four runs and deprived Eckersley of a chance for a save. [Tony La Russa] was uncertain if Canseco would play tonight against Toronto right-hander Dave Stieb. “”I don’t know how sore he is going to be,” said La Russa, grateful to talk about something besides Canseco’s scrapes with the law. “”I suspect he is going to be pretty stiff tomorrow.”

Dodgers Run Out of Luck; Cardinals Win

In his shortest outing in 17 starts, [Mike Morgan] was gone before he had a chance to bat. In three innings, he allowed six runs on six hits, and the ERA shot up 42 points-an incredible amount this late in the season-to 2.21. Not surprisingly, his ERA is no longer leading the National League. And all because of one inning that, for an instant, seemed to contain one of the Dodgers’ slickest plays this season. With one out in the third, Cardinal starter Scott Terry, who improved his record to 7-7 and his ERA to 3.48, started things with a single. [Vince Coleman] followed with one of several frustrating Dodger plays in the inning, a grounder that second baseman Willie Randolph picked up next to second base. Randolph stepped on second and threw to first for what appeared to be an inning-ending double play. But the throw to Eddie Murray was high, and Coleman was safe. The Dodgers need to make room on their roster for Mariano Duncan, who is due back from the disabled list Sunday, and pitcher Ramon Martinez, who is due in from triple-A to face Chicago Monday. Judging by statistics, the leading candidates to be supplanted are relief pitcher Ricky Horton, who has allowed six runs in his last 3 1/3 innings, and little-used first baseman Franklin Stubbs, who is four for 22 as a pinch-hitter. But those roster decisions could be a precursor to a major move. Management reportedly hinted to Tim Leary, who was moved to the bullpen despite a 3.18 earned-run average in 17 starts, that a deal could return him to the rotation within a couple of weeks. The newest candidate on the Dodgers’ wish list is Kansas City outfielder Danny Tartabull, who has been made available by the Royals. The Dodgers are also closely watching St. Louis outfielder Willie McGee, who has a wrist injury but is due back in the lineup next week, and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Glenn Braggs.

`The Fan’ has earned his stars

This year the venom was aimed at the fans’ selection of Mike Schmidt as the NL’s starting third baseman and Jose Canseco as one of the AL’s starting outfielders. Schmidt, you see, had retired weeks before the balloting concluded. And Canseco, well, Jose was busy gathering traffic violations but, because of a wrist injury, hadn’t played a minute of major league baseball all season long. If we ink-stained wretches have any right to complain, it’s over the selection of the non-starters on the All-Star teams. After all, it was NL manager Tommy Lasorda who named second baseman [Willie Randolph] and catcher [Mike Scioscia] to his squad? Favoritism? Naw. You can’t blame Tommy. He is, after all, a fan of his own players and must live with them day in and day out. Where was NL president Bill White when Lasorda was naming four Dodgers — pitchers Orel Hershiser and Jay Howell were L.A.’s deserved members – - to the team? Tommy was just covering his rear end, keeping his players happy. It was White’s duty to step on Lasorda’s lasagna, and he didn’t.

Canseco’s woes // California police chief takes cuts at A’s slugger in letter to team

Pleasanton Police Chief Bill Eastman blasted [Jose Canseco] for not taking responsibility for his actions, including recent speeding tickets and an arrest for allegedly having a loaded handgun in his car. “I don’t know where (Eastman is) coming from,” Canseco said Saturday night in Toronto, where the A’s are playing a series with the Blue Jays. In April, Canseco was arrested for investigation of having a loaded gun in the Jaguar while parked at the Laurel Heights campus of the Univeristy of California at San Francisco. He was visiting a doctor there for treatment of a wrist injury that kept him out of the A’s lineup for the first half of the season and the All-Star Game.

    Trade Canseco? A’s might

One reason seems obvious. The more [Jose Canseco] hits — and he is batting just .167 — the tougher the Oakland A’s are going to be in the AL West. Now that Canseco is back after missing the first half of the season with a wrist injury, the California Angels have to be feeling a little more pressure leading the division by only a percentage point. Jose and his manager simply don’t hit it off, as [Tony La Russa] intimated when recently asked if Canseco’s wrist is back to 100 percent: “If I say it’s hurting, Jose would say it’s fine. If I said he’s fine, Jose would say it hurts. That’s the way it’s always been with us.” The entire A’s organization, from owner Walter Haas down to a number of players, did not like the way Canseco reacted to being voted to an All-Star Game starting position despite not appearing in one first-half game. Canseco thought he should get everyone’s blessing to play, but La Russa quashed any possibility by keeping him on the disabled list. The consensus: More “me-first” mentality from Canseco.

Raiders Get Camp Going Without Holdout Wisniewski

When [Marcus Allen] passed up minicamp, there was some attempt to paint it as the result of last season’s wrist injury. Allen and Bill Lewis, who are in similar positions, tried to use the weight room during the session but Coach Mike Shanahan told them if they didn’t intend to practice, they’d have to leave. Shanahan saw Allen a few days ago at a black-tie fund-raising dinner for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but they only said hello and Shanahan didn’t ask about Allen’s plans. Raiders start two-a-day drills today. They’ll practice against the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday afternoon in Thousand Oaks and here Thursday afternoon (closed, as per Raider policy). . . . There are 55 players here, including free agents Bob Golic, Otis Wilson and Jimmie Giles, and an old favorite, Vince Evans, the strike quarterback who was in the running for the No. 1 job a year ago at this time.

Off-field of nightmares;`Negative stuff’ taints Canseco

[Jose Canseco Jr.]‘s off-field escapades have inspired “ludicrous” trade rumors, according to [Sandy Alderson]; one was Canseco to Seattle for rookie star Ken Griffey Jr. and Jeffrey Leonard. “We let Jose be Jose as long as it doesn’t destroy our club,” says ace pitcher Dave Stewart. “I think Jose cares; it’s just that there’s something about him that makes him come off … I prefer to say, relaxed. Sometimes what you project is misunderstood.” Source: USA TODAY research CUTLINE:BACK IN FULL SWING: Jose Canseco, who returned to action earlier this month after a wrist injury, says he is misunderstood. `Jose’s really a shy guy,’ says teammate [Walt Weiss].

Ex-Husker Battles Injury, Helps ‘Carry’ Red Barons

“I’m just trying to make it through the year,” said [Steve] Stanicek after he drove in the winning runs in Scranton’s 4-3 win over Omaha on Monday night. “At the start of the season, I didn’t even know if I could play anymore. Stanicek’s once promising career became clouded after he suffered a knee injury before the start of the 1988 season. The injury cost him an opportunity to make the Milwaukee Brewers’ team in the spring. It limited him to 27 games at Denver last summer. It forces him to now spend 20 minutes after each game, icing his knees in order to have a chance to play the next day. [Bill] Dancy said Stanicek, despite missing seven weeks early in the season with a wrist injury, has been an important performer for his team. The 28-year-old Stanicek leads the Red Barons with a .300 average and has driven in 36 runs in 64 games. Keith Miller’s 39 RBIs lead Scranton but he has played in 101 games.’He Can Swing the Bat’

Orioles lose 7th in row, to Twins

Bill Spiers opened the eighth with a single off [Edwin Nunez] and moved to second when Nunez (1-2) was called for a balk with Mike Felder at the plate. Nunez walked Felder, and Jim Gantner sacrificed to put the runners at second and third. Paul Molitor was issued an intentional walk to load the bases before [Robin Yount] walked to force in Spiers. Jerry Browne started the Cleveland eighth with a single to center off Lee Guetterman (2-5). Guetterman then threw wildly to first on Felix Fermin’s bunt, putting runners at second and third with none out. After pinch-hitter Luis Aguayo popped out to first, Joe Carter was walked intentionally to load the bases. [Pete O'Brien] then greeted Greg Cadaret with a two-run, ground-rule double off the glove of [Luis Polonia] in left. Briefly — Bo Jackson, troubled since last month by a thigh injury, was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Royals. Jackson’s spot on the roster was taken by outfielder [Gary Thurman], who had been on the disabled list since June 10 with a wrist injury. Jackson, the most valuable player in the All-Star Game, has 22 homers and 64 runs batted in and was hitting .269 … Cleveland placed All-Star pitcher Greg Swindell, at 13-3 their top pitcher this season, on the 15-day disabled list with a tender left elbow. Swindell’s place on the roster was filled by calling up right- handed pitcher Steve Olin from Class AAA Colorado Springs … Detroit activated pitcher Jeff Robinson (Christian High, El Cajon), who had been bothered by a pulled muscle in his left side.

METS TALK TRADE FOR TWINS’ VIOLA

    – NEW YORK – The New York Mets want Minnesota left-hander Frank Viola and are talking trade with the Twins, The Associated Press has learned. The Mets, trying to fill the void left by Dwight Gooden’s injury, would like to lure the New York-born Viola home for three pitchers – Rick Aguilera, David West and Kevin Tapani. The Twins, however, may want more for last year’s Cy Young winner. — KANSAS CITY – Bo Jackson, troubled since last month by a thigh injury, was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, by the Kansas City Royals. Jackson’s spot on the roster was taken by outfielder Gary Thurman, who had been on the disabled list since June 10 with a wrist injury.

INJURY COUNT: VALLE, CANSECO PROBABLY OK

Mariner catcher Dave Valle was hit on his right shoulder by a foul tip in the first inning last night. He was removed in the second inning and taken to Providence Hospital. — A’s outfielder Jose Canseco strained his right quadriceps muscle sliding into second base after a double in the sixth inning. Canseco, who spent the first half of the season sidelined by a wrist injury, reached third, then beckoned the trainer. He left the game at that point. — With the promotion of pitcher Clint Zavaras from Calgary, the Mariners returned third baseman Edgar Martinez to the Cannons. Martinez, 26, was hitting .235 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 54 games. This is his second trip to Calgary.

U S West talks hit late snag

Union representatives said that under the tentative accord, U S West had agreed to not increase the hours of operators who work “short tours,” evening shifts of fewer than eight hours. Employees who work short tours are paid as if they work full 40-hour shifts, said Mark Belkin, a spokesman for CWA Local 7777 in Denver. Carpel tunnel syndrome is a wrist injury that afflicts some workers who perform repetitive tasks. Increasingly, carpel tunnel and other repetitive motion ailments are being recognized as a workplace hazard.

KELLY PRODUCTIVE IN NO. 9 SLOT

NEW YORK – While his numbers are near the top, Roberto Kelly remains on the bottom of the New York Yankees batting order. His average has hovered around .340 this season, and the only thing that has kept him out of the league leaders is a wrist injury that put him on the disabled list May 26. The injury has kept him from getting enough at-bats to qualify for the American League batting race. Former Manager Lou Piniella, now a Yankee broadcaster, recently criticized Manager Dallas Green’s use of Kelly in the ninth spot. But the manager and players feel comfortable with the batting order.

QUESTION OF POLICE BRUTALITY APD STILL REVIEWING 10MONTHOLD CASE

A patrolman went to the home of David Matlock on October 6 to investigate a report that Matlock had driven recklessly through his east Anchorage neighborhood. The encounter quickly turned violent. Before it was over, some 10 officers were at the scene, Matlock’s dog was shot and he and his roommate were under arrest for disorderly conduct. [Bobby Smith] and Matlock were not available for comment last week. Smith is out of state and Matlock is working on the North Slope. He said he has been awaiting a copy of the internal investigation before he files a lawsuit against the department and the individual officers on Matlock’s behalf. Matlock still suffers back and wrist injuries as a result of the incident and is seeing a psychologist, and veterinary bills for the dog continue to mount, [Richard Collins] said.

    ACCIDENT TAKES TOLL ON BOWLER

TX: It was heavy understatement because [Ron Mohr]‘s success came despite a broken right collarbone, a stress fracture to his right elbow and two broken bones in his right wrist, all suffered in one of those manmeetsanimal stories that are so very Alaskan. And, yes, he bowls with his right arm. Mohr’s story began as he was pedaling his bicycle down the Coastal Trail, trying to keep fit before the Festival in Oklahoma City. The little computer on his handlebars said he was averaging a personalrecord 20 miles per hour. A doctor diagnosed Mohr’s broken collarbone. Mohr thought the pain in his elbow and wrist would subside, but two weeks later, during a visit to another doctor, he learned the extent of his elbow and wrist injuries.

    Suspension shocks, surprises Douglass

Whether it was naivete or errant trust, Bears defensive back Maurice Douglass has been suspended for 30 days for violation of the National Football League’s anabolic steroid guidelines. Douglass met with Tobin, Bears President Mike McCaskey and trainer Fred Caito Tuesday morning, admitting that he unwittingly took the banned substance on the advice of an outside source to expedite the healing of a wrist injury suffered late last season. “I’ve never, to my knowledge, taken an anabolic steroid. In January, I had taken something that I thought wasn’t a steroid anabolic,” Douglass told WBBM-TV.
