Douglass vows to fight suspension for steroids

Defensive back Maurice Douglass told WLS-TV (Channel 7) Wednesday he will try to contest his 30-day suspension for taking anabolic steroids. “I want to fight this thing,” said Douglass, who said he unwittingly took an oil-based substance to help a wrist injury heal. Douglass said that if he had knowingly taken steroids, “I would have tried to mask it; I would have covered it up.” Asked if he was concerned about the Bears releasing him or trading him as they did fullback Calvin Thomas after he was suspended for drug abuse, Douglass replied:

    `Mind if I listen in?’

If Mary Kaufman gets the silent treatment from hubby for awhile, she knows why. She’s a juror in a malpractice trial in Detroit. Her husband, Charles, is the judge. The culprit behind this coincidence of seeming juris-imprudence is Wayne County’s computer list of licensed drivers, from which jurors are randomly chosen. When neither lawyer objected, Mrs. Kaufman joined the panel. “I didn’t really know what to do with her,” said lawyer Euel Kinsey, who represents a man suing over a wrist injury. “But as the judge handled the questioning, it developed that she could be fair and impartial. It was cute-him asking her questions he already knew the answers to.” Defense lawyer Kenneth Mattson agreed: “She seemed like a nice and conscientious lady.” And the judge’s legal opinion? “She’ll be wonderful. She’s very fair,” he said. Dad’s crying rag? A diaper They’re talking ’bout the Jones boys in New York: Singer Tom Jones apparently is running up the white diaper in that nasty paternity suit. His lawyer has negotiated a “certain sum” in child support for a 14-month-old boy fathered by Jones with weekend girlfriend Katherine Berkery in 1987. Until recently, Jones insisted that he was the victim of a prostitute’s wiles. Berkery, 27, who reportedly sought $3,800 monthly, said she is “very happy” with the tentative settlement figure. As for Jones, she said, “I think he’s a disgusting human being.” And where is Bert Parks?

    Bears’ Douglass reinstated

Bears defensive back Maurice Douglass was one of 11 NFL players reinstated Tuesday after serving 30-day suspensions as a result of failing steroids tests. Douglass can be the Bears’ 48th player on a 47-man roster. The team has until next Tuesday to activate him or get rid of him. He can start practicing today, but Douglass can’t play Monday night against Philadelphia unless the Bears place him on the 47-man roster. Douglass and other suspended players failed their first steroids tests but had to pass their second tests, taken last week, to be reinstated. Douglass had said he unknowlingly took a steroid in January to help heal a wrist injury.

HE PLAYS LIKE A VIRTUOSO ON THE FIELD — AND ACTS LIKE A ROCK STAR OFF IT. HE’S . . .JOSE

Voice: “Press one on your touch-tone phone to hear Jose talk about yesterday’s game, and about his personal life. To hear Jose discuss the topics of steroids, his ownership of guns or about speeding, press 2. If you’d like to leave a message or a question for Jose Canseco, which may be answered right here on the hotline at a later date, press 7. If you don’t have a touch-tone phone, stay on the line and you will hear a specially prepared program, just for you. Make your selection now.” According to A’s general manager Sandy Alderson, the team has talked to Canseco “two or three times” about “common sense, trying to put it in perspective.” In the same breath, however, Alderson acknowledges the difficulty of taking this tack. After Canseco was arrested earlier this year at the University of California-San Francisco for carrying an unregistered .9mm semi-automatic handgun in his notorious red Jaguar, he was besieged for autographs by FBI agents after they took his mug shot. His trial was a widely publicized joke, replete with autograph-hounding security guards and unfunny quips from the bench. By July, Canseco still had not played because of a wrist injury. But he received 932,329 votes to start in the All-Star Game and had no qualms about doing so until the cooler head of A’s manager Tony LaRussa prevailed. Canseco’s background is relatively modest. His family was allowed to emigrate from Cuba in 1965, when Canseco was a year old. His father, Jose Sr., had worked for Standard Oil until Fidel Castro ascended to power in 1959. After asking to leave the country, Jose Canseco Sr. lost any kind of sanctioned job, so he supported his family by teaching English to neighbors out of his home for $15 a month until he was finally allowed to leave the country.

A’s have a lot more than just big bats

Pitching is rather a good place to start the balancing act and the A’s staff is stacked. Starters [Dave Stewart], Storm Davis (19-7), Mike Moore (19-11) and Bob Welch (17-8), spot-man Curt Young, setup guys Todd Burns and Matt Young and closers Dennis Eckersley (33 saves) and Rick Honeycutt (64 games, 12 saves) simply cover all the exits. The pitching staff had such depth that the A’s could sacrifice two good young arms (Greg Cadaret, Eric Plunk) in a deal for outfielder Rickey Henderson, a price that many A’s rivals said was too high. When [Jose Canseco] missed the first half of the season with a wrist injury and was joined for two weeks early by [Mark McGwire], there were predictions that the A’s would descend minus the Bash Brothers. But the club was 9-4 without the two clouters.

    HOW JAYS, A’S MATCH UP

Injuries slowed Tony Steinbach. But he remains a top defensive catcher and his .273 stick is more than respectable. Left-handed hitter Ron Hassey will catch only Bob Welch. With the A’s starting rotation entirely right-handed, there will really be no use for Pat Borders. Ernie Whitt will handle most of the Jays’ catching. The nod has to go to the A’s since Steinbach will neutralize the Jays’ speed. Since Mookie Wilson’s arrival, the Jays are 37-20. But his value can’t be measured just in wins and losses. A key point is that Wilson is a .346 hitter right-handed with the Jays and only .275 left-handed. A’s starters will keep him on the left side. For the A’s, [Dave Henderson] is underrated and is a big-game player. His 15 homers were fourth on the A’s and his 80 RBI were third behind [Mark McGwire] and [Dave Parker]. The position is a toss-up only because of Wilson’s intangibles. Right field might be the Jays’ most glaring weakness while the A’s have one of the best in [Jose Canseco]. Despite playing only 65 games because of a wrist injury, Canseco still managed 17 homers. Project that over an entire season he would have been right around the 40 home run mark. But the one thing Canseco hasn’t done since returning is run. Here, the Jays have Junior Felix, who some day will be a plus offensively. Lloyd Moseby may also see action in right field, and gives the Jays more speed and some power. But regardless of who’s in right for the Jays, in a landslide the edge goes to the A’s with Canseco.

NOTEBOOK Reuschel Shuts Up as He Is Preparing to Shut Down A’s

“[Rick Reuschel] is busy,” said [Norm Sherry], who was then asked how the introvert Reuschel handles the postseason pressure. Sherry is referring to Reuschel’s off-speed pitches, which induce hitters into hitting grounders and looking silly. Sherry recently detected a flaw in Reuschel’s delivery that caused those pitches to hang, which happened when he was battered for five runs in one-third of an inning in Game 2 of the playoffs against the Chicago Cubs. Enlightened [Jose Canseco] then discusses, in great detail, the intrasquad workout the A’s had Friday and how the A’s were “rusty” against the Dodgers last year and how “this year, we’re going to go all the way. An indication is how we did against the Giants in spring training. We beat them eight out of nine times-and Rickey Henderson wasn’t around at the time and I had my (wrist) injury at the time.

Jerue Plans to Culminate Comeback Against Saints

Last February, Dr. Clarence Shields opened [Mark Jerue]‘s left knee for the third time in two years, and what he did inside with his scalpel was meant to get Jerue walking again, not playing again. “I keep attendance records in the off-seasons, and Mark is always right there,” [Garrett Giemont] said. “As a matter of fact, if I had to break it down, Mark Jerue in the past five years has had the greatest attendance in the off-season, of just work, period.” To make room for Mark Jerue on the roster, the team placed rookie cornerback Alfred Jackson on injured reserve with a groin injury. The Rams also exercised their option on rookie linebacker Brian Smith, who has been on injured reserve with a wrist injury. Under new rules, Smith had to be either activated, waived or returned to practice this week. Smith, the second-round pick from Auburn, will remain on IR and resume practicing, forcing the team to cut one member of its developmental squad. . . . Flipper Anderson is averaging 32.8 yards per reception, 10 more yards per catch than league runner-up Mervyn Fernandez of the Raiders. How remarkable is the statistic? “Thirty-two yards per catch?” Coach [John Robinson] said. “That’s further than our net punting is.” He’s right. Punter Dale Hatcher is averaging 31.4 net yards per punt. In fact, Anderson’s average is better than 10 net punting averages around the league. . . . As of Wednesday evening, about 5,000 tickets remained for Sunday’s game against New Orleans at Anaheim Stadium. In order for the local television blackout to be lifted, the game must sell out by 1 p.m. today. . . . More on Jerue: He’s had three operations on the left knee, two during the 1987 season. He started the first 12 games at inside linebacker last season before the pain finally forced him out of the lineup. . . . Further X-rays of [Fred Strickland]‘s left ankle showed no break, though he was walking on crutches Wednesday.

Pressing for New Ways to Type

SEVEN YEARS AGO, Anthony Hodges added another vocation to an eclectic collection of careers that included stints as an environmentalist, fighter pilot and unsuccessful political candidate. Hodges, the son of a Linotype operator, became the inventor of an unconventional computer keyboard. His design, which he calls the Tony, took a standard Apple keyboard and added several adjustable features, enabling a user to split the keyboard down the middle and tilt each half upward. The “A” shape — which looks like someone broke the keyboard over their knee — can be adjusted to varying heights, which Hodges says helps eliminate hand and wrist injuries suffered by many workers who spend long hours in front of computer terminals. Hand, wrist injuries a growing job hazard

Carpal tunnel syndrome, one of several ailments known as repetitive strain injuries, occurs when constant bending of the hands, wrists and arms inflames tendons that squeeze the main nerve that runs through the arm. It’s called “carpal tunnel” because the carpal tunnel houses that main nerve. None of the district’s 200 employees had developed carpal tunnel syndrome, but many did repetitive tasks such as data entry, book sorting and book code scanning at check-out counters. [Bill Brough], who was hired to help the store, says that as workers moved products across the scanner, their wrists would twist. Eventually, they got sharp pains in the wrist and elbow, and their fingers would be too weak to grip things.

    Redskins pass Testaverde test

WASHINGTON (AP) — Three quarters of outstanding defence proved to be just enough for the Washington Redskins, who survived a fourth-quarter passing show by Vinny Testaverde Sunday and escaped with a victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A third-quarter wrist injury to the Darrell Green, the Redskins’ best cornerback, seemed to pave the way for the Tampa Bay comeback. After Green went out, Testaverde went wild. Washington, 4-3, established control with a 17-0 third quarter. First, Mark Rypien capped a 73-yard drive with a 10-yard TD pass to Clark. After a Tampa Bay punt, the Redskins moved from their own 48 to the Buc 25 before [Chip Lohmiller] kicked a 42-yard field goal.

    PERSPECTIVE

Milestones Eric Dickerson’s 17th 100-yard game for the Colts surpassed Lydell Mitchell’s club record. Christian Okoye’s 33 carries set a Chiefs record. [Roger Craig] broke the 49ers’ record for career rushing touchdowns. He got No. 62 Sunday, beating Ken Willard’s mark. A crowd of 59,091, a football record for the expanded Astrodome, saw the Oilers get their first shutout since 1980. Key injuries The 49ers lost safety Jeff Fuller to a serious neck injury, linebacker Jim Fahnhorst with a possible stress fracture of the right foot, fullback Harry Sydney with a fractured left forearm, and quarterback Joe Montana with a sprained left knee. Montana appears to be the only one who might play next week. The Cardinals, who have lost 12 starters to injuries this season, lost rookie defensive tackle Jim Wahler with a sprained left knee and cornerback Carl Carter with a pulled right hamstring. Coach Gene Stallings said Wahler, from UCLA, probably won’t need surgery but might be out three to four weeks. The Dolphins lost both starting running backs. Marc Logan suffered a strained left knee in the third period, and Troy Stradford went out in the fourth quarter with an injured right knee. Logan feared he would miss at least three weeks. Stradford might have ligament damage and could be out much longer. Redskins cornerback Darrell Green went out in the third quarter with a wrist injury. The Buccaneers lost their two starting guards — Mike Simmonds (dislocated kneecap) and John Bruhin (torn knee cartilage) — in the first half. Both are out indefinitely.

    Redskins Outlast Attack by Testaverde

Entering the final period, the Bucs had managed just two first downs on their opening drive and two more in the last minute of the third period, and none in between. A third-quarter wrist injury to the Darrell Green, the Redskins’ best cornerback, seemed to help Tampa Bay. After Green went out, [Vinny Testaverde] went wild. Rick Karlis kicked a pair of 40-yard field goals, then Chris Doleman recovered a fumble by Detroit’s Barry Sanders at the Lions’ 17, and six plays later Herschel Walker dove over from the 1 for his first Minnesota touchdown. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Bobby Hebert struck like lightning with touchdown passes of 54 yards to Floyd Turner and 37 yards to Eric Martin on consecutive plays early in the third quarter, and New Orleans (3-4) blew past Los Angeles (5-2). Dalton Hilliard scored three touchdowns, including a 20-yard pass from Hebert on the Saints’ second play of the game. Cardinals 34, Falcons 20
