Bellows’ wrist injury not serious
North Stars left wing Brian Bellows suffered an injured wrist in Saturday’s 7-2 loss at Quebec, but X-rays proved negative, coach Pierre Page said Monday. Bellows is expected to be in the lineup for Wednesday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres at Met Center.

PREP SPORTS PERSPECTIVE
GIRLS TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Lisa Alipaz, Canyon, who won three singles sets and three doubles sets in leading the Comanches to two Century League victories. MATCH OF THE WEEK: Edison, which has been ranked in the county top 10 all season, gets its stiffest test this week as the Chargers, No. 4 in the county, fight for the Sunset League title. Today, they play Fountain Valley, just behind them at No. 5, and Thursday take on Marina, which was ranked in the Top 10 in preseason and features Tracy Crisell. … Sea View League powers clash this week when University takes a shot at knocking off the league’s No. 1 and county’s No. 2 team, Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings, with Keri Phebus and Courtney Strauss, travel to University today to take on Jeannette Fylpaa and the Trojans. AT A GLANCE: Fullerton welcomed Loraine Lau back to its lineup two weeks ago, but was never more glad to see her than in the Indians’ match against Sonora. Lau won all three sets at love to help Fullerton win, 10-8. Lau, who was league champion a year ago, has been out since late last season with a wrist injury. … Crisell showed her versatility by winning two singles sets and a doubles set with Tricia Dillenbeck as Marina tied Los Alamitos, 9-9, but won on games, 89-87. Crisell is 43-5 in singles this year. … Dina Birch won all three sets, including a 6-2 victory over Fylpaa, but it was the Eagles’ doubles teams that truly earned the victory over University, winning eight of nine possible points. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Margot Neville, Edison, had 40 assists and 28 digs in two matches, including 30 assists and 23 digs, to go along with five kills against Huntington Beach. GAME OF THE WEEK: Slightly more than two weeks after they met for the first time, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar come together for the their second and final regular-season Sea View League meeting Thursday at Corona del Mar. The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in the county, defeated the Sailors, ranked No. 3, in their first meeting at Newport. In that match, the Sea Kings got 26 kills from Danielle Everett and 13 from Tracy Schriber. Senior setter Marilee Pfister had 43 assists. The first match went four games, with Corona del Mar winning the final three. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. AT A GLANCE: Canyon pulled off a big upset and put itself in solid position to win the Century League when the Comanches beat El Modena in five games. Canyon, ranked No. 5 in 3-A, got 14 kills and 11 blocks from Dawn Austin and 37 assists from setter Kori Dalbey in beating the Vanguards, ranked No. 4. … Capistrano Valley also helped itself quite a bit, winning a showdown with South Coast League rival El Toro. The Cougars, No. 4 in the county, rode 15 kills from Christina Grady and 11 from Tanya Mitchell in beating the visiting Chargers, ranked No. 6

Palatine, H-F seeking playoff redemption
Palatine’s Joe Petricca and Homewood-Flossmoor’s John Wrenn do, however, and both coaches are hoping to make past playoff heartbreaks a vanishing memory as they guide their ranked teams into the 1989 state playoffs. This year’s Pirates won their first four games and were ranked No. 4 in The Tribune poll before a wrist injury to quarterback Randy Hecklinski forced Petricca to go with Hecklinski’s younger brother, Jeff, a freshman, in a key conference game with Buffalo Grove. Palatine lost 24-13. Even with the elder Hecklinski back the following week, the Pirates were trounced by Fremd. With Randy Hecklinski (more than 1,600 yards, 12 TDs in 8 starts) back at full strength, Palatine rebounded to win their final four games, and head into Winnetka Wednesday to face New Trier (6-3) in its Class 6A opener. Can the Pirates put the last two playoff letdowns completely behind them?

Hurricanes dominate Panthers Miami defense devours hapless Pittsburgh, 24-3
The Hurricanes, with quarterback Craig Erickson making his first start since his wrist injury (he played some last week in a replacement role), were not at their sharpest, but scarcely had to be. They could play it buttoned-up on offense, given the Hurricanes’ defensive smothering of the Panthers. Try this for a fit on domination: 383 yards in total offense for Miami, 182 for Pitt. The Panthers’ quarterback redshirt, Alex Van Pelt, passed for 154 yards and all it got him was a notation that he had thrown for more yardage than did Dan Marino as a sophomore. Big deal.

THE BEST
– OUTLOOK: The Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV have lost three big presences, at least temporarily, but they’re still awe-inspiring. David Butler and Moses Scurry are sidelined with grade problems, George Ackles with a wrist injury. But fabulous forwards Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon, combined with gunner guards Greg Anthony and Anderson Hunt, are enough to make UNLV the terror of the West and one of the most potent teams in the country. UCLA, quietly laying the foundation for a dynasty of the 1990s, could ambush Arizona for the Pac-10 title. — OUTLOOK: The Michigan Wolverines retain Rumeal Robinson and the rest of the national championship team, with the notable exception of Glen Rice (24.8 ppg). Minnesota, the surprise of the Sweet Sixteen, is loaded with experience but must overcome an aversion to winning on the road. Illinois’ chances dipped when it lost useful Larry Smith to academic problems, along with veteran frontcourt graduates Nick Anderson, Kenny Battle and Lowell Hamilton. In the Big Eight, at least three teams have the potential to go far in postseason play – Missouri, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Skins’ woes could let Bears air theirs out
The last time they hooked up, Davis caught a 52-yard touchdown pass, longest of his pro career. It was the last of three sudden strikes by Tomczak in nearly rescuing the Bears from a 32-31 loss to Tampa Bay last Sunday. Was it a fluke? Or are Tomczak, Davis, Ron Morris, Dennis Gentry and Dennis McKinnon actually such game-breaking threats? Three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darrell Green is out with a wrist injury, and replacement Barry Wilburn is on the non-football injury list for using cocaine. That leaves rookie A.J. Johnson and first-year free agent Martin Mayhew at the corners. The Skins’ pass rush suffered a blow when leading sacker Dexter Manley was suspended for using cocaine, and his replacement, Marcus Koch, was sidelined by a knee injury.

Wrist injury may end season for De Paul swingman Price
De Paul sophomore swingman Curtis Price’s season seemed near an end Monday because of his recurring wrist injury. Coach Joey Meyer said Price and the school were “leaning” toward a decision to redshirt Price for the rest of the season so he can have a second operation on his wrist. Price, a 6-foot-6-inch defensive star from St. Rita High School, underwent wrist surgery in mid-October, started the season, reinjured the wrist in the victory over North Carolina State and has been playing in pain since.

Designers Seeking a Safe Computer Keyboard Ergonomics: Ideas kicking around are for a computer that will transcribe written or spoken words. Innovations, however, are meeting resistance.
His design, which he calls the Tony, took a standard Apple keyboard and added several adjustable features, enabling a user to split the keyboard down the middle and tilt each half upward. The “A” shape – which looks like someone broke the keyboard over his knee-can be adjusted to varying heights, which [Anthony Hodges] says helps eliminate hand and wrist injuries suffered by many workers who spend long hours in front of computer terminals. Hodges is one of a handful of iconoclasts promoting radical alternatives to today’s conventional keyboard designs. Their devices-which so far have been roundly rejected by the big U.S. keyboard makers-range from variations on Hodges’ split keyboard to keys that are moved much like a computer mouse. Since the subject of workers with RSI came up, Hodges said, he has gotten responses from company officials such as, “Let them take aspirin-it’s cheaper.” Still, Hodges said he has been approached by a Japanese company (he refuses to go offshore) and several U.S. telecommunications companies recently have expressed interest in trying his keyboard.

De Paul to gang up on La Salle’s Simmons
Lionel Simmons, La Salle’s wondrous 6-foot-6-inch All-American, will hold a committee meeting Saturday afternoon at the Rosemont Horizon. Because Curtis Price, De Paul’s slick, 6-6 sophomore defender, has been sidelined for the season with a wrist injury, coach Joey Meyer will try to play defense by committee against Simmons. Kevin Holland, Deryl Cunningham, Bill Heppner and Stephen Howard-all in the 6-6, 6-9 range-are likely to take turns banging on Simmons, an inside-outside scorer who averaged 28.4 points and 11.4 rebounds a game last year.

Paxson weathered stormy time; now puts wind in Celtics’ sails
[Jim Paxson], a 6-6 guard who can also play some small forward, has started and performed admirably in Boston’s last five games. His finest moment in two-plus seasons as a Celtic occurred in the first half against the New York Knicks last Wednesday when everything he threw up went through the hoop. He buried all seven shots from the floor and two from free throws. The virtue the Celtics value most is hard work. That’s why [Jimmy Rodgers] and general manager Jan Volk have remained supportive of Paxson during his stretches of cold shooting and his bouts with back, groin and wrist injuries. “He’s a worker,” Rodgers said without hesitiating. “And he’s totally team oriented. Whatever role we have asked him to take on, he has done it. He has come off the bench and he has moved down the bench a couple of spots. When he was struggling early, it was on offense. His defense has always been very strong. He has always been a tenacious player and done things that don’t show up on the stat sheet. Jim has had some rough spots and some physical problems, but right now he is playing well.”
