Writers often experience problems with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) due to the nature of their work. CTS is a type of repetitive stress injury caused by, among other things, typing and writing regularly for extended periods of time.

There are some small changes you can make in your daily routine to help avoid this particular type of injury.

Simply changing how you type is going to make the difference between healthy hands and painful ones. For starters, be sure to sit up as straight as possible when at your desk, facing your computer with your feet on the floor. Get up every few minutes and stretch your shoulders, arms, elbows and hands. Keep your wrists neutral and not contorted as you type. Ideally, your hands should be 'floting' just above the keyboard so that your fingers do not have to 'reach' so far as they search out different keys. Also, practicing simple Carpal Tunnel Exercises, such as the basic stretches described ablove, will ease the pain caused by the stresses of overusing the hand.

Keeping good habits in mind from a young age will save the typist trouble later in life!
